Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
Quiet. Scott sent some rather fearsome looking fighter sweeps over Port Moresby and Lunga, but with no bombers about I not CAP'ing my bases. I'm not particularly interested in attrition at this junction.
AK Libra sank at Tulagi, while TK Kyokuto Maru is reported sunk.

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
The SC TF hit two days ago is sighted well to the northeast of Lunga. A bombardment which thought better of it, I presume. Anyways, my carriers are returning to Noumea.
Scott's pushed another transport TF into harms way at Lae, giving me the opportunity to land yet another blow. Friendly forces lose 15 aircraft though, so in terms of VP he's actually gets the better of it - initially anyway.
Another huge sweep over Lunga. No thank you, sir.

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
Goddamnawful weather, everything grounded. Scott's busy around New Georgia if recon's to be believed. I for my part am about to lift the rest of the 14th Bgd. to Gili Gili, and we should start to counter-attack soon.
SWPAC received another B-17 sdq. and now has a reasonably respectable force of 75 heavy bombers available.

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
Without a hitch, the rest of the 14th Bgd. is now in place at Gili Gili. The airfield is now lvl. 2, and I've moved a sqd. of A-24's there to manifest an air presence. 4 DM's are enroute to add a minefield to the defences there.
A resupply TF is short of Port Moresby, and several IJN subs are sighted in the area. The supply situation at PM is fine, so I'll just hang bask a turn or two and let my B-26's flash their ASW skills (or lack thereof) before running the gauntlet.

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
Several attacks by no hits on subs at Port Moresby. Withdrawn from Gili Gili to Port Moresby after having supported the 14th Bgd. airlift, I forgot to get a couple of P-40 sdq's off CAP. Hence they tangled with a fighter sweep, loosing 4 of their numbers to one Zero downed. Resupply TF going in next turn, so there'll probably be more of that in store.
Rebound forces - dead beat - are scant miles short of Buna. Recon indicates the presence of 1 Rgt. + several support units. I'll have to rest my troops a bit before attacking. Meanwhile 5th AF will work over the defenders for a bit.
After 2 weeks at sea, the carriers put in at Noumea, and immediatly starts to receive replacement aircraft. Next time they put to sea, the CAG's should at full or near-full strength.

October arrives and so too the Rebound forces at Buna. Next turn we'll probe the perimeter to get a handle on what's there. B-26's will conduct what will be the first of many strikes until Buna is in Allied hands. Operations at Gili Gili will have to take a backseat for now.
B-24's will be bombing Rabaul harbour just to remind Scott to keep a CAP up over the place, while B-25's will be going after a few cripples at Lae.
The 7th ID has now been unloaded at Cookstown and is ready to be lifted to Wau for Operation Swipe.

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
Scott struck at my transport unloading at Port Moresby and I was lucky to only loose a subchaser. However I lost 28 fighters to 12 Zeros and 3 Betty's. All my P-39 & P-40 sqd's at PM are at half-strength and the cupboard is bare. I do, however, have 4 sqd's of P-39 and a newly arrived P-40 sqd. in reserve. But it underlines just how vulnerable I am to attrition when Scott can bring me to battle.
Still, Port Moresby now has four times its stated supply requirement and it should be a couple of weeks before I have to do this again.
Buna has been probed and the defences there are found to rest on a single rgt.

We'll have a quiet week or so until I'm mounting the next expedition to the Lunga area. Base expansions and raising the fort level there are rapidly eating through the supplies.
I've conducted a small mining operation at Gili Gili, dropping off 320 mines while sweeping the field at Basaliki.
At Buna, my troops are resting after the trek across the Stanleys. Meanwhile, 5th AF will bomb the garrison. Slow and steady does it (hopefully).

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
Send a few P-40's in to precede the strike on Buna, and for once they performed acceptably against the A6M2's, trading casualties. The strike, however, was scrubbed.
Irau AF made lvl. 4. I should feel reasonably confident about hanging on to Lunga. Scott's busy, however, expanding his bases in the central Solomons and should be able to put up a lot of fighters over Lunga before the end of the month.

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
Wet weather keeps my aircraft grounded all day. Transport TF sighted just south of Rabaul. If it's going to Buna it'll get a very hot welcome indeed - I've moved virtually everything that that flies plus the kitchen sink to PM.
VF-2, -6, -8, & -72 are now all at near complete strength. Much the same with the strike groups, except VB-6, butchered over Shortland. The CO of a recently arrived Marine DB sdq. (sans aircraft) has scrounged the last few remaining SBD's, it seems.

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
Enemy transports should move into range next turn, headed for Buna or Dobodura probably. 6 sqd's of fighterbombers and 8 bomber sdq's stand ready to attack. Heavy casualties amongst the 5 sqd's of escorting fighters are expected, hence B-25's and B-24's will strike Lae airfield, while B-17's out of Cooktown will hit Buna. A CA/CL SC TF is moving to a position near Gili Gili, to make a foray against Buna if necesary. I've rather incautiously forgotten to provide it a LRCAP...

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
B17's, B-24's and B-25's strike forward airfields to no noticable effect. The majority of the bombers then fail to even launch against the enemy transports at Buna. 18 escorting P-40's lost to 16 Zero's and Oscars. SWPAC fighter strength at all-time low. Tomorrow, P-39's are tasked with providing the bulk of the escort. Several new IJN aces will no doubt be made. Hell of a way to bring my air force to battle.
A SC TF (CAx1, CLx3, DDx5) will strike Buna this coming night also. Most of the surviving P-40 have been moved to Gili Gili to provide LR-CAP for the cruisers, which are ordered to return to Gili Gili. DD Mugford, part of this TF, is reported heavily damaged, cause unknown.
Another TF, covered by what appears to be KB, is sighted to sea east of Shortland...
Rossel Island springs to AF lvl.1. A counter-invasion is immediatly being organised. Carriers Saratoga, Enterprise, Hornet, and Wasp are alerted and will move to a position south of Rossel to launch a strike, then retire further south in order to not entirely jerpadize surprise. A cruiser force is detailed to a position south of Irau in response to the above sighting. If nothing develops, it will retire to join the carriers. 17th Bgd. is tasked with recapturing Rossel. It will be FT there (with supplies!) as soon a suitable force can be collected at Townsville. Rossel is defended by a CD Bn., which is causing some unease.
My very first casualty, AP American Legion, finally made it back to Noumea, and is duely dispatched to Pearl.

Note to self: Don't use P-39's a escorts. 26 aircraft lost, of which 16 are P-39's. However the combined efforts of Allied surface- and air forces have almost entirely annillated the enemy convoy, leaving only a single MSW afloat but damaged.
DD Gridley struck a mine at Basilaki while retiring and is moderately damaged. Gridley is the only casualty of the fight, although the retiring SC TF was very lucky indeed to remain hidden under clouds and avoid being mauled by KB, which had put into the Solomon Sea presumably for that very reason.
RO-34 is reported sunk and an B-26 hits the I-11 off Koumac as Allied ASW goes into overdrive. Hokkai Maru is also reported sunk, a bit odd given that my combat report last turn only showed it being strafed.

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
It would appear that the tranports sighted day before yesterday are headed for somewhere in the Solomons. My SBD's leaned the hard way that they're LRCAP'd, presumably out of Vila and/or Shortland.
I just happen to have substancial forces at hand to meet such an invasion - a SC TF and 450 land- and carrier-based aircraft. I'm not too worried about Lunga, which is well entrenched and shielded by mines and a large number of CD guns. Tulagi - strategically irrelevant though it is - is rather more vulnerable. It's defended by 70 assault points worth of troops behind a lvl 1 fort and a small minefield. If invaded by one rgt., airpower can suppress it long enough for reinforcements to arrive. Two rgt's and I'm toast.
Scott's remaining carriers are about and with any luck I'll be able to catch and overwhelm them with mine. I initially wanted to set my CV's on react, but the Saratoga has been building up sys damage, making one AC TF slower than the other. So even if both TF's react, they might not land in the same hex. Next turn offers thunderstorms, adding another X-factor to the equation. So (as usual) I'm playing it safe.
My cruisers are moving to a position east of Irau, out of range of KB (hopefully) but with striking distance of Lunga/Tulagi.

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
Pretty quiet. KB has entirely disappeared and the transports north of Tulagi appears to be retreating. I've got no idea what this is about. Maybe Scott thought better of it or it's a decoy or some other ploy, dunno. Not knowing the location of KB, I'm pulling my SC TF back about 300 miles. The CV's will procede in a northwesterly direction and look for trouble.
I'm pulling about a third of my aircraft out of Port Moresby. Enemy bomber strength at Rabaul is growing and I don't need 200 bomber to keep the Buna garrison busy, so I'll lower my target profile and have a reserve of rested bomber sdq's with good morale. These include my 2 sqd's of B-25 in the hope that it'll speed the conversion of a B-26 sqd. (too few replacemets) to B-25's (too many replacements).

KB reported out of harms way off Bougainville, which is just as well as I got the orders for my two AC TF's messed up and they got separated.
The 17th Bgd. is being loaded at Townville for Rossel Island. I don't have much experience making landings in the face of CD fire, so I'm not sure what to expect. I don't really want half-a-dozen banged-up DD's from this.
My C-47's got intercepted over Wau again, in spite of the RAAF providing CAP. 5 P-40's & 4 C-47's lost to none. However the 46th Eng. Rgt. is through and will march on Salamaua to contruct a landing strip there.

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
Operation Cufflink (as it is now officially known) is about to kick off. However I'd like to deliver a strike or two against Rossel before going in, and the weather's going be be pretty bad next turn, so there might be a delay. The 17th Bgd. will in all likelyhood become a permanent resident, so I guess I might as well make the best of it and built up the place - putting SWPAC's B-26's within range of Shortland.
At Buna I'm trying to desuade Scott from basing fighters there, without much luck it seems. The bombers didn't go in this turn, unfortunately, but tomorrow's another day.
Simultaniously, I've begun loading the transports for the Irau relief mission,. They'll gear up and move to a position of readiness for once the naval part of Cufflink is over.

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
The carrier strikes on Rossel produced nothing, and I've no reason to believe that anything short of a weeklong bombardment would cause appreciable degration of the defences there. So the 17th Bgd. will be going in tonight, precedeed by a naval bombardment. I'll probably cost me a bunch of banged-up destroyers, but it can't be helped.

The 17th Bgd. got dropped off at Rossel. It is unfortunately without supply, but it is hoped that even at 25% combat power, it will be able to overwhelm the local defending NG Bn with the aid for the USN carrier planes. Destroyers Dunlap, Perkins, Helm and O'Brien are all moderately damaged by coastal artillery as the troops are unloaded.
CL Nashville of the bombardment force was torpedoed by I-29 while withdrawing after dawn. She's not badly hurt, just enough to warrent her detachment and return to Noumea to maintain the speed of the TF. The I-29 had already been spotted right in the path of the invasion force, so it couldn't be helped without delaying the landing.

RE: Rematch by Proxy: Scn.7, Grunt6971 vs Timtom
3,000 screaming and quite probably drunk Ozzies charged out of their tiny bridgehead at Rossel and destroyed the Japanese garrison to a man. That concludes Operation Cufflink. Now I just have to figure about what to do with the place - it's well within the orbit of Scott's surface- and airpower from Rabaul to Munda. Personally I'd prefer to vacate the place, but that's obviously not an option.
The CV and SC TF's will withdrawn into the Coral Sea to rest their airgroups and bunker. Then they'll proceed to rendevous with the transports for the Tulagi relief (Operation Shoehorn!) off Koumac and proceed to Tulagi. Simultaniously, TF's will unload supplies at Port Moresby and Irau.
