And the Japanese assumed that they were superior to all Westerners because when things got hopeless, the Westerners surrendered instead of dying like a true warrior.
Denegrating the "enemy" is as old as warfare itself, and de-humanizing them with racial epithets is quite common on every side. Americans were especially bad with the Japanese because they knew so little about them, what they did know came from the reports of atrocities in China, and the Pearl Harbor "sneak attack". But looking at the ways both sides treated POW's says more about thier charicters than what they said in their propaganda.
