Current playtesting a new 42A scenario with the 4.5(5.0) adjustments and further improvements. As Japan (to start at least) i'm playing in China....going after Yennen myself, the AI of course hasn't moved the northern units to reinforce yet. First attack was a delib and i reduced a fort at cost of 3000+ casualties. Tried a shock for attack two....no fort reduction and 7700 casualties later. ouch. [:D] Going to be a hard dirty fight...even with almost 10 divisions attacking and 300,000 men and 2000 guns

Yenen can be a real tough cookie. especially vs a human. also seems to be the main japanese target rather than homan which strikes me as odd.

Yes it can......fortunately there's an AI. [:D] Not knocking it. Actually its been playing pretty smart, but it appears Yennen caused a glitch....maybe there were sunspots in the air. After reducing another fort with a delib (at the cost of another 3500 casualties) the AI decided to shock attack......with 3 infantry corps (all that was defending the city thank god)
Well....suffice to say, a 0-1 result with 7000 casualties distributed among only 3 corps was devastating. I shock attacked the next turn and for 400 casualties, scored a 12:1 modified result, destroying 3 fort levels (not counted anyway since the AI had attacked previously)

so what was looking to be a bloody siege turned into a victory.

OK discussion and otherwise more useless info ..

US west coast saw hundreds of AK's and TK's loading up at sanfrancisco for huge 80+ship convoys to PH,noumea, and brisbane.

PH will get sentral pac additions

Noumea (tentatively) will get a 270 size av/base force and the SW Pac fighters and medium bombers

Brisbane .. large AV 51st aviation unit. along with tons of fuel and supply. also the 5th air HQ diverted from the north pacific will see command in australia.

South Pacific

elements of the 163rd RCT and the 3rd USMC CD batallion will arrive tomorrow at baker island . no idea if this is a good idea or not to be honest.

First elements of the US 27th division also unloaded at canton. the rest of the unit and more engineers are 2 days out. also conton made a size 3 port today ! .. hurrah can now disband units into here. pririoty will now go to fortifying the defences then lastly the runway as no medium bombers are heading down this way just yet.

Suva in Fiji and Tonga both recieving needed supplies and are slowly building forts as a priority.

the 14th NZ brigade at Aukland is now combat ready and set to prepare for noumea. AP's diverted from brisbane i'll pick up the unit in 4-5 days time. additional DMS escorts are also sent to cover the loaded convoy.

DEI

Makassar in sulawesi was evacuated right under the nose of baby KB :) .. fortunately she has retired to re arm i would guess and the BB fuso was last sighted east of borneo steaming NW .

A small base force is all thats left at kebdari. quite a lot of fuel and supply has been moved to timor and darwin. but without the CL raiders no semi-effective surface group remains here. force Z still inTimor but at least he now knows i'll pounce on any suspected 'unescorted' landing forces. may well slow the japanese advance.

Just noticed but the australian 13 brigade arrived at darwin and the large karachi-perth convoy which had been diverted here ariived simultaneously. with 20+ supply im hopeing the brigade can re-inforce before being caiied over the water to koepang. AP's idling at bali sent south for this purpose. .. also both Bali and Lombok evacuated for use in timor and North australia.

the Dutch minelayers have been grouped and sent in a roundabout way upto ceylon, soerbaja wont make a size 9 port anytime soon so priority will go on fortifications. Java is now organised. Batavia and sorbaja main defensive bases. Kragen garissoned to help prevent cutting the islnd in 2 and the west coast port of tilitjap is now the evacuation port for useless dutch a/c ( namely the FK51 recon units) all of which are now heading for karachi (2) Perth (2). much later worth upgrading to F5 recons. Heavy fleet units in batavia inc BB Revenge CA's corwall and Exeter. CVL hermes in Tjiljap for overland raiding of invasion groups.

Borneo has fallen for all intents and purposes .. only the western most bases still in dutch hands.

Sumatra .. well .. Palembang is chock full of everything i could scrape together. and the enginers set to recieve replcaments in an effort so cause maximum damage to the oil facilities when it falls. also a LOT of oil/fuel and supply has been moved out too. this will continue untill it becomes too expensive to do so. ( probably after singapore falls). Westeren sumatra has been stripped for troops for use in both the andaman is. and more for Timor.

Malaysia ..

Supply is very very good , also a 5k AK from karachi sneaked into singapore yesterday .. 43k in singers 24k in johore baru. wont run out anytime soon. bombers set to harass the japanese troops and all shipping has dried up of late. 70 more P40E's flown into Singapore via andaman/north sumatra. may provide a suprise, else heading to sumatra/java.

Burma/India

Pretty quiet. P40's and hurricanes patrol mandalay and Akyab forward airfields. the secondary line Jothat-imphal was initially evacuated so the base forces could reconstitute at anasol. now rebuilt they are marching back ( i would use air transport but all i have are some rubbish dutch units). Strategic decision will see dakotas used mainly in n.aus as a reinforce.evac option for Timor. china will have to run its own economy for now. but the burma road is open so not too bad and only limited flanking forces planned for Yenen. chinese a/f ( fighters only) will try for ground attack missions for recon as much as annoyance value.

well that concludes today round up, sorry its so long .. also screenie of PI included.

PHI situation seems to be more than Ok! [:D] ...You said you will counter assault with force here... You aiming to throw the Japanese out of the island completely [;)] ???

Good to hear that Singapore has a lot supplies... I will bet that it wohn't surrender too easily... How is the fortifications there??? [:)]

Btw any sign of KB? You did not mention this Japanese air "circus" in your report? I would assume he has replenished this TF already and it is ready for combat action.

No idea where KB is ?? but not a thing i can do if it turns up anyway except get out of the way :)

PI is a bit odd to be honest .. allied attacks in San marcelano and Clarke achieve 1-1 results. i have a feeling im spread too evenly . SM fort 3 and clarke fort 5 can can hold smaller defensive garissons. therefore .. 3 inf 1 tank and 1 arty moving from SM to bataan , then to clarke.

Japs have in SM 1 div, 1 bde 2 tank units
Clarke 2 divs 1 armour + ?? forget
Manilla 2 divs 1 SNLF

So hes all spread out too ! .. only real issue in the PI is supply .. no idea how to get more in .. might try a couple more single sneak ships.

IIRC singers is fort 7 and climbing .. johore baru is 6 and climbing .. and i gave up malaysia too easily ???? i think not [:D]

I Never reinforce Java ( well havent yet ) as its a POW camp waiting to happen imo ..

OHH yes .. set 80 odd P40's and some buffalos on LR cap over johore baru ... please please please .. ground attack with the Zeros again.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

humm 1 div and one bde .. not easy to stop in open ground. fortunately i have moved up several corps from homan area to K????? city west of homan down the road .. 3 moving out with hq to cover the road supply net. this is becoming nasty he has a definate flanking mindset which i havnt encoutered before , my other 2 games were head-head on the rails and roads with minimal flanking units. any advice ? He's doing the same in burma .. one jap div now over the river and 60miles west of mandalay. Ive ordered 3 brigades back from mandalay to the rail hex north . but im pretty sure they cant dislodge him if he moves in .. BUT if he does then i can try and flank him .. etc etc etc .. like playing diplomacy in slow motion in a vat of treacle[;)]

One noteworty event i forgot to mention in the last post was a night naval attack by catalinas ! all missed an APD unfortunately .. but i have never even seen it happen before ! .. it was a very good 80+ unit out of bataan .. though i'd give it a whirl .. humm may actually try this again with good units from time to time.

ok bye for now .. and advice comments on china appreciated .. sorry no screnie as i closed the turn before i took one DOH ..

will do one next post of china as its very unlike any game ive experienced so far.

Actually in lieu of a screenie .. have a nice AAH moment

Yes, the Japanese tended to bomb from 20-25k over PI. Two bombers lost doesn't seem bad though given the airframe type. Admitedly the AA changes work best against Allied armored bombers, dolling out just enough damage to keep them honest and eliminate the standard 6000 foot destroy-all-monsters effect at even large airbases. Japanese 1st generation planes tend to suffer a little more than they should as a result. True too....overall AA is made overeffective a tad bit on purpose in order to compensate for some game weaknesses in other areas. The overall goal is to encourage and in some cases force more historic play.

I have reduced AA a bit in the upcoming version. Testing it now. I may also edit some of the PI and Malayan units and reduce the AA present to better represent the historical lack of proper AA defenses and/or AA ammo that many a base suffered during the initial Japanese attacks. (the lack of which rewarded intially the China honed preference for low level strafing attacks by fighters)

Manila and Singapore, due to the retreat and overstacking of base units do become "flak cities" with an average (assuming repair/replacement of disabled guns) 70-90 barrels. A formidable barrier to unarmored Japanese bombers.

Been keeping Speedy honest. He's currently blasting Singapore with 150+ bomber attacks but not at the usual 6000 foot blitzkreig height [:D]

Pfft. I never bomb from 6000 feet anyhow. I have principles [:D]

More than keeping me honest. I'm hardly scratching the surface of the 2 fortresses. Gonna be months of seige work..........

Maybe in the case of PI due to the urban bonus. Doug will never forgive me for trashing the capital but i wanted to see what would happen. Your bombardments have been very costly though. Must be a good number of heavy weapons being used. [X(]
