Action off Pine Island

Took a few days of donkey humping around New Caledonia but my mixed cruiser force finally intercepted the invasion convoy headed for Noumea. Would have happenned two nights earlier if Surface Combat TFs had an intercept capability like Sub TFs but what the heck. For Leander crippled, 5 of the 7escorts were sunk (including CL Katori) but the transports were unscathed. IJN escorts did an admirable job. No sign of a carrier covering force yet. Qite possibly, KB is covering the two TFs spotted yesterday approaching Canton Island. Guess Bill did not want to split KB allowing the USN CVs local parity. I wonder where Halsey and Fletcher are right now?[;)]

ASW action off Townsville.

Wow, did Mike Wood ever do an excellent rework of the surface ASW routine. This was great to watch...just the right amount of tactical in a strategic game with regard to sub combat. Really feels realistic.

Well, a second straight open sea interception! HMNZS Leander sank from the damage caused by two long lances (actually, tried to scuttle her eight times and all eight resulted in a CTD...MichaelM is getting the save) but splitting the remainder of the cruiser force did the trick and the invasion force was engaged again. Unfortunately what little IJN escort was left after the previous night's engagement managed to protect the transports again. USS Parrott manages to "be off doing something else" for the second consecutive engagement and fails to participate.

TF 7 encounters mine field at Canton Island (100,100) Initial reports also claimed that the Canton assault was reulsed, but clearly, this was not the case...helps when KB's Vals plaster the snot out of the defences first. Darn mine hit on an AP is false too. FOW. As I said before I'm beginning to enjoy the sync issue, as long as it remains fairly few and far between. The only concern I have is that the sync issue has a tendency to affect CV exchanges.

A little over two weeks has passed and I thought I'd update the situation in the DEI. Thing to remember, not a single point of supply has come from outside the DEI, so basically I'm buying P-40s, howitzers etc with coffee and other food stuffs. Sure, I've shipped resources out for manufacture but NO manufactured goods have been sent back. The point I'm driving at is that a large portion of the supply should be coming from outside sources where they actually MANUFACTURE the TOE devices and aircraft supply converts into. This is clearly not necessary even this early in the game and using the much more strict CHS to boot.

Palembang: S: 4,080 F: 36,122 O: 303,975 R: 14,950 (supply and fuel have gone down in two weeks from S: 10,292 and F: 20,075 due to efforts to ship these out. However, oil stocks have increased by 100,000 and resources by over 13,000)

Toboali: S:19,063 R: 39,983 (supply has increased by approx 3,000 and resources by 10,000 in two weeks, despite any "spoilage"...no effort was made to remove anything from here last two weeks)

Tarakan: S: 9,530 F: 1,627 O: 22,650 R: 22,815 (large amounts shipped out)

Balikpapan: S: 1,628 F: 5,268 O: 41,150 R: 11,780 (large amounts shipped out)

Kendari: S: 1,306+5,500 shipped by AI to Pomala dot F: 11,056 R: 2,555 (large amounts shipped out)

Miri: F: 4,912 O: 37,200 (nothing shipped out)

Brunei: F: 22,118 O: 111,440 (nothing shipped out)

Java bases (total): S: 106,014 F: 53,777 O: 3,779 R: 30,845 (large shipments of supply brought in from Palambang, Kendari, Balikpapan and Tarakan only...no supply from anywhere else...and large shipments of fuel, oil and resources shipped out. Despite this in two weeks the available supply on Java increased by 14,000 and resouces by 11,000)

Timor and Lesser Sunda Is: S: 39,188 F: 23,284..up 15,000 and 8,000 respectively in two weeks)

There is 80,550 oil and 36,275 resources at sea on the way to Oz.

In the last 2.5 months I have also shipped...

@ 100,000 supply and @20,000 resources to Singapore. Singapore has not received any supply from manufacturing centres, only DEI, as is the case for the Phillipines as well. Percival and MacArthur are using Mangos and boiled rice to great effect.[8D]
@ 100,000 oil and 120,000 resources to Oz.

Here are the previous posted totals from just two weeks ago...

I am not sure where the DBs went that are to op losses. I am not seeing that many fly. Maybe they are practicing Kamakazi drills already. [:D]

I would love to see the American carriers come out and play. It looks like Singapore will hold on for a little while longer.

Did the Canton landings take you by surprise? Maybe my next target will if that did not. [;)]

I wish I had the time to post as much as you do but have a full plate.[X(]

No worries Bill. I'm trying to highlight the supply issue mainly so if you could post once in awhile regarding your stats that would be great...especially from your operational jump off points etc. Manila the turn it falls and the one prior to would be good to show whether supply is destroyed when capturing a base (I've seen no reference to this in any version of the manual).

As for Canton surprising me...not really. After Johnson I was expecting something more given the fact that Johnston was not exactly a recon/harassment op seeing the number of troops there. USN CVs? They can only be at one place at a time. I hung around Pearl for about two months until a few weeks ago.

What surprised me was that Noumea attempt...a little risky. Too bad my CVs were a little too far away.[:(]

Pressed my luck trying to force a decisive result against the Japanese Noumea Invasion Force. (Of course this would have happenned a few days ago if the surface combat model had a patrol capability for SC TFs as I mentioned earlier, but perhaps a "pursue enemy" feature would have helped as well (it is in for armoured LCUs, why not for bloody combat TFs?). RE: Bill (IJ) vs Ron (Allies): An examination of Supply and Fuel using CHS 1.06

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Bill. Also, when you get a chance can you post your production costs/expenditures vs your Home Island and Mainland supply once in awhile? Supply itself is only used in the production system to pay for increasing factory size and repairing the damage resulting from this expansion. Also used to repair damaged resource and oil centres but basically, that's it. All the Japanese players I've talked to said that there is always ample supply produced at home to pay for whatever production upgrades they try and nearly ample supply available in the DEI to repair any damaged oil/resource centres. They don't ship supply to the Home Islands/Mainland and only ship a little supply abroad to help repairs. Basically what I'm hearing is that the supply and much of the oil and resources produced in the DEI are not really needed to fuel the Japanese economy.

I'm really convinced that seperating supply from resources (allowing the player to change the ratio produced) or having resources, when "refined", produce more supply points than the level currently produced (and not changing the current resource/supply ratio) is the answer to easily getting the model to work more as it should.

RE: Bill (IJ) vs Ron (Allies): An examination of Supply and Fuel using CHS 1.06

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Hi, Ron

Here is the economic report of the end of May 1942 (each first day of month in the game I posted here the economical situation)

Economic situation (stocks rounded to the thousand):
Supplies : 3 224 000 (bases) + around 500 000 (TFs) = around 3 724 000 (+ 159 000)
Fuel : 3 982 000 (bases) + around 383 000 (TFs) = around 4 365 000 (+ 56 000)
Ressource centers : 17 065 (+ 1 123)
Ressources : 1 229 000 (bases) + 70 000 (TFs) = 1 299 000 (- 35 000)
Oil centers : 2 486 (+ 202)
Oil: 1 340 000 (bases) + 127 000 (TFs) = 1 467 000 (+ 54 000)
Manpower centers : 808 (+ 4)
Manpower pool : 326 000 (+ 75 000)
Heavy industry: 13 497 (+ 0)
Heavy industry pool: 130 000 (+ 28 000)
Naval shipyard: 1278 (+ 0)
Merchant shipyard: 1000 (+ 0)
Repair shipyard: 863 (+ 62)
Armament industry: 600 (+ 0)
Armament stock: 62 000 (+ 12 000)
Vehicles industry: 113 (+ 0)
Vehicles stock: 7 400 (+ 2 000)
Aircraft engine factories: 1508 (+ 31)
Aircraft frames factories: 842 (+ 0)
Aircraft research: 175 (+ 38)

You will have to wait for some days to have the report of end June 1942. Ressources will be artificially boosted by the capture of Toboali this month. This month saw the first fall in armament pool (as more and more units have replacement turned on) and the first increase in HI in this game (as now the Japanese Empire is producing more ressources than what it is using), and also some increase of armament factories

And here is the changes from the start of the war:
Supplies : + 724 000
Fuel : - 135 000
Ressource centers : + 4945
Ressources : - 501 000
Oil centers : + 1736
Oil: - 333 000
Manpower centers : + 27
Manpower pool : + 226 000
Heavy industry: + 242 (all by conquest)
Heavy industry pool: + 130 000
Naval shipyard: + 104
Merchant shipyard: + 0
Repair shipyard: + 328 (125 by conquest)
Armament industry: + 99
Armament stock: + 42 000
Vehicles industry: + 23
Vehicles stock: + 7 400
Aircraft engine factories: + 143
Aircraft frames factories: + 158
Aircraft research: + 175

So a total of 104 (shipyards) + 203 (repair shipyard) + 99 (armament) + 23 (vehicles) + 143 (engines) + 158 (aircraft) + 175 (aircraft research) = 905 industry upgrades, for about a million supplies (with the cost of expanding, main cost being repairing) in 6 months

I have no supply shortages, except in places where shipping supplies is risky (like Timor). Between 50 000 and 100 000 supplies are sent from Japan each week to support operations (especially in Pacific and in Burma), build stocks in big bases (Singapore, Kwajalein, PH) and repair oilfields (this last part will be finished shortly). Having enough AK to ship supplies and ressources is not yet a problem but my AK losses are rather small (and AKs are scarcely used for invasions).

I think that starting from July, my supply production will allow me to send supplies to places like Mandalay or Amboina to repair oilfields that will be bombed as soon they will be repaired by Allied heavy bombers, but they will still produce some more oil points... I also expect to capture Lanchow oil sometimes in the summer and this extra oil will need extra ressources so I may repair ressource centers here and there.

This is from Amiral Laurent's AAR in response to a request I made. Any chance you could format your supply situation in a like manner Bill?

I can give you a screen shot of the economic screen if that would help.

By the way the invasion force that hit Noumea was a recon in force. [:D]

Had to scuttle S-40 today. She must have been hit during the endless sightings/attacks vs subs with this air asw model but because of the sync issues, I did not witness it. Oh well, guess I have to babysit yet another aspect of the game and check the all ships list every frigging turn.

Bill is still cruising about in the South Pacific with mini KB. My advice to Bill...don't press your luck too long like I did and loiter in the hot sun.(barely escaping disaster too, I did![;)])
