"Shattered Sword" contains a very detailed description of damage control doctrine, systems, and techniques as they pertained to Japanese aircraft carriers as well as an analysis of the construction of each of the Japanese carriers lost at Midway with an eye to how that construction contributed to their demise. It also compares/contrasts many of the doctrines, systems, and techniques of the IJN, USN and RN as they pertain to carrier operations, damage control and survivability. Recommended reading.

Damage control in general was more developed in the USN vs the IJN however both sides still had lessons to learn, particularily in regards to carrier ops. Lexington's loss was one of those lessons that almost had to learned the hard way. The Loss of Lexington did help future damage control operations thus a bonus rule to DC would be partially dependant on game experience. (the wargame in question) Unfortunately this can be a hard thing to do code wise and different approaches have been tried. Off the top of my head, i recall that for the tactical wargame "Carrier Force" Gary accounted for the fact that the Coral Sea scenario being the first "CV vs CV" battle, all plane assets were accessed a -1 modifyer to their attack and defense rolls. Subsequent scenarios eliminated this penalty to reflect past battle experience.

In addition to Shattered Sword, Peattie's "Sunburst" also well covers Japanese carrier design and doctrinal focus. I recommend both.

Ok another funny thing me and Spruence restarted the game and i think there is some kind of Course over my head... for the secound time my Zeros from Saigon didn't fly escort with Nells to Singapore alrught they were set to do so...[:D]
