the FIRE levels would have caused the majority of the damage but even non pen hits can do some minor SYS, its just not the guaranteed 1% per hit that it was in PacWar

Yep. But it's those little plinks (resulting in little fires), that can skew the model. I can -ALSO- see where if you took away the "miniscule" fire damage of small weapons, it would bork something else. Neither can I offer a solution.

I'm just saying that it's -very- not correct to dismiss the smaller weapons. You can plink a ship to death, no matter how large (again that was just ONE combat).

For those of you who think that this is complete BS....remember HMAS Sydney.

SIDNEY fell victim to a German Navy Armed Raider with 5.9" guns and a Naval crew. Not your average Merchant ship.....

As has been pointed out, the cause of this freaky action was most likely ML Ikitshushima, which is more like an unarmored, minelaying light cruiser when weaponry is concerned. 5.5 Inch guns should do considerable damage to even a heavy cruiser in point blank range

Well, Kormoran hat 6 ww1-Subcrusier 5,9" guns, with 3 or 4 they ripped Sydney in parts.
The torpedos were small air-torpedo-sized, so no real punch.
But to be fair, the Kormoran ambushed the cruiser - but no "Überraider" with Elitecrew... their guns were very old, the crew was trained, sure - but such thing could happen.

For the game - if the CA makes a mistake to close in and do not see the ML and if the ML can score two or three important hits (kill the bridge, destroy one turret (with internal explosions) and the engine room) it could be possible... but the chance this happen should be in the 2-3%, even with a stupid comander
Don't tickle yourself with some moralist crap thinking we have some sort of obligation to help these people. We're there for our self-interest, and anything we do to be 'nice' should be considered a courtesy dweebespit

Exactly, in a confused night action and close ranges such things should be possible. Anyway, this is a result I personally have never seen, neither myself nor in any AAR's before this. So I think the chance of this happening is even less than 1%.

That combat result was a fluke, but it's not like it couldn't have happened irl. Perhaps the ML was masked by a large cargo vessel and suddenly ambushed the CA? Perhaps the CA charged right INTO the convoy and had it's guns trained to the other side when the ML pounced? Who knows.. it's very unlikely but possible.

You wouldn't have...because in stock ML ML Ikitshushima's heavier 5.5's would have been as helpless as the 3in popguns on the transports at any range.

LOL [:)]

But really Ron this is not even stock you are criticising here. If you allow smaller weapons - and we are talking 5.5" here not pop guns - to damage ships previously immune you are going to get some unusual results.

I like the fact that some of the vessels are being made more vulnerable as I see this as a weakness in the stock campaign. While taking Feinder's example of Yamato being overwhelmed by 40mm bofors on board the real game examples I come across are all the other way. Too many ships can just ignore ordinance of certain kinds in the game. Remember the old gamey tactic of slipping a IJN Cruiser in to a transport TF so nearly all the allied level bombers attack that (which they cannot damage) and ignore the transports?
