A numer of options present themselves:

1) Retire the carriers and put 50 SBD's and 50 F4F's at Exmouth (range to PH is 7 hexes)

2) Bring up the TBF's and some P-38's or Beaufighters to Exmouth, but leave the carrier air complenments intact (SBD's, Albacores and F4F's), moving the carriers perhaps 1 hex E of Exmouth (6 hexes from PH). This might result in a huge coordinated raid with the TBF's and P-38's from Exmouth and myabe even the B-25's from Carnovan....well ...we can dream, right.

I believe JJ will know Exmouth went to level 2 but I am not sure about this.

Option 1 much safer. Option 2...more firepower..much greater risk.

Quite possibly, JJ will give up the "field". That seems to be be the prudent choice but they are into Port Hedland in a massive way and don't want to lose 3 1/2 good divisions.

I recommend using your newfound level 2 base as a "USAAF aircraft carrier" to support local carrier options. Crank up your CAP with available fighters at Exmouth, limiting their range to 1 and keep your carriers at sea within one hex. The CAP spillover effect should mitigate the additional risk from operating in proximity to your opponent's (depleted) carriers.

Of course, you will need an SCTF screen or two for the carriers too. Once it was obvious that you were so limiting your movement, I'd immediately send in a surface force to intercept your carriers.

ETA: I find it interesting that-in November 1942-your opponent is using B5N1s in his carrier groups. He must have experienced significant B5N2 losses to 'reach back' into his armamentarium for these inferior airframes.

Interesting point about the older Kates.

JJ could still get their transports in by moving East, out of potential range of SBD's from Exmouth and either use LRCAP or CAP bleedover to cover the transports going into PH. If we moved 1 hex E of PH to improve carrier strike cohesion and make better use of the Albacores we might find ourselves at the wrong end of a one-sided carrier exchange.

I am leaning toward option 1 and then attacking with the carriers the next day if we get lucky.

***********Bali Hai Dance Club, Perth, Nov. 14, 1942(c)*********

Hirsute Man: Hey, Milo, you crazy SOB, why did you put in so many "Slow Children" signs on the tollway?

Man in fine linen slacks: Gaddamn Toodyay HOA.

Hirsute Man: Do they have lots of slow children in Toodyay?

Man in fine linen slacks: Buckets full judging by the nimrods in charge.

Hirsute Man: Well, if you ask me this war would be over a whole lot faster if there weren't so many rules.

Man in fine linen slacks: Yossarian, you clever SOB, I believe you are evoking the memory of General Sherman.

Hirsute Man: The tank guy?

Man in fine linen slacks: Holy Mary and the Baby Jesus! Yossarian, did you EVER study in school?

Hirsute Man: "Ever" is an absolute.

Man in fine linen slacks: My question stands, Yossarian.

Hirsute Man: Well, you shouldn't ask questions as absolutes like that. All I need have done is study once to answer "Yes".

Man in fine linen slacks: Well? Did you?

Hirsute Man: I plead the sixth.

Man in fine linen slacks: It's the Fifth, Yossarian, you crazy SOB, the Fifth Ammendment.

Hirsute Man: No, I meant sixth grade. I studied in sixth grade.

Man in fine linen slacks: Hmmm. Sixth grade, eh? (takes a drink) I will thank you to not advocate for an early end to the war. M&M is doing very well. Besides, what are you going to do if the war ends?

Hirsute Man: Go home to Gilroy, I suppose, see my dad.

Man in fine linen slacks: You are DEAD, Yossarian! Don't you remember? He has a leter from Mr. Stimson and a Purple Heart medal. If you show up there you will kill him for sure.

Man in fine linen slacks: Maybe I could break it to him slowly..............

Dang...I can't beleive how active this AAR board is. I watch a couple football games and take my weekly shower and it's page 2 Purgatory.*

********Nov. 15, 1942********

It looks like JJ may have given up bringing more troops ashore at PH. There was a desultory naval bombardment druing the night but no air exchanges. Exmouth now has 25 SBD's, 6 Albacore and 18 Marine F4F's all attached to V Bomber Command which has a CO who eats peanut butter and glass sandwiches. There are also 50 USAAF/RAAF P-39's and two surface groups.

Does anyone know if Albacore can carry torps at 7 hexes?

* Some authors feel that "Purgatory" should not be capitalized unless it is the name of the ski resort in Colorado.

My underestimation of the scope of the game itself derailed any thoughts of an entertaining AAR very shortly into the game. For me it is a "retrospective record" for myself and Terry now. Man I hope hes not reading it as we are playing....The pace we are playing at far exceeds what my expectations were at the beginning. I might, may, if I quit smoking, quit drinking, quit ogling, live long enough to play another. In any case I have had more than a laugh or two in this thread and if you can't stay on page one, SHAME ON YOU!! I count on this when I get home from work after dealing with the handicapped (most people actually fall into this category) all day. Oh yeah, keep your eyes on the Ravens.

Sincerely,

Whine, whine whine. Hours of free entertainment and they want more! I'm thinking about putting in for a transfer to another herd.

As for the Gilberts, I did get a Christmas card from them. Michael got the new promotion but it seems they have to move to some backwater town in New Mexico of all places.

Melissa writes he is positively "glowing" with excitement but the poor Golden Retriever lost all his hair. Evidenty the stress of the move was hard on him.

Speaking of dogs (you knew I would grab that segue didn't you?), remember that accidentally over-sized picture I once posted that included a caption about the house with the wolf-dogs? One of them decided to off two of the owners cats. There is an electric fence around that yard for a reason. So she got rid of him. Found him a good home with a really nice guy who is semi-homeless. I haven't figured out that part yet - does it mean she found him a semi-good home?

Does anyone know if Albacore can carry torps at 7 hexes?

Yes, easily.

In fact it should be able to carry an underslung torpedo at extended range of 20 hexes (its historical maximum combat range was 820 nautical miles, it was designed to be a combination torpedo bomber/dive bomber/reconnaissance aircraft, it was in fact fully stressed to dive at 400km/h with four 500lb under-wing bombs).

Ah, splendid! Is that aerodynamic rating with or without the wings? When do we get the Albacore II with RATO pods and laser designators?

You know, it occurs to me that Admiral Lord Sprior and I have never really properly thanked the community for their sage advice and unwavering confidence in our plans. Lets leave it that way.[:'(]

Not sure but I once saw a sign that read "Help Wanted/ Part Time Female". I think they may be related somehow.
