RE: Checked at Noomfoor

Post by Andy Mac »

My TF's are inching forward I am making a big effort to pound Kavieng from Rabaul.

My principal goal is to get ashore at Wasile and start to make PZB nervous about end runs

Kai Island is also possible.

The rough timetable is

1. Land Wasile
2. Loop round north of NG to North Aus
3. Pick up ABDA Corps on transports
4. Take Kai and Namlea (possible Amboina as well as it looks lightly defended) with ABDA Corps
5. Make Kendari and other bases in area untennable
6. Withdraw LCI's LST's etc and most of forces earmarked for Thunderchild to Pearl or Kwaj for a few weeks of refit/R&R

OK doing a little prior planning

In the next 60 days the fleet will consist of

12 USN Fleet Carriers
1 RN Fleet Carrier
9 USN CVL's
27 Combat CVE's
6 Replenishment CVR's
8 Modern BB's
4 Old BB's
10 Modern CA's
6 Old CA's
16 Clevelend or Brooklyn class CL's
7 Other CL's
Numerous DD's

50 LCI
35 LCM
93 LCT
76 LCVP
149 LST
2 LSV
8 LSD

and about 50 AP's of varying capacity

I am going to need to work this out pretty carefully.

But the Fleet Attacking the Marianas will need the bulk of that force as I am planning on landing 2 full Corps on Tinian in the first phase.

1 Marine Div
6 x US Inf Divs
1 x Airborne RCT

I suspect I will leave the bulk of the Barges in SWPAC to keep up the pressure there with Wasp/ Saratoga and Formidable backed by some of the older CA's and CL's (Primarily the Australian and RN ships)

The 4 old BB's will be used in my assault Transports and I will use the 8 modern BB's in 4 fast bombardment TF's to support and guard the landing I am planning on providing quite a lot of detail on my Marianas attack as I need to keep it straight somewhere.

If I plan on using 135 LST's, 6 LSD's, 50 LCI's and the 2 LSV's plus say 35 AP's and 100 AK's thats c 7 Divs plus armour and support assault loaded (AK's for Armour and Support minimally loaded)

More to follow in the weeks and months to come as I finalise my TF organisation

Nasty, nasty.

For the big southern push (that ended with the capture of Noumea) in our PBEM I scraped together almost every warship and transport I could manage + almost 75% of the IJN/IJA airpower.

copied from my AAR on the paradox forums:

Area #6 - The Southern Area

Now this is the area where the fun is going to start. A massive fleet has been assembled and will attack in two waves. Yesterdays and todays recon flights over Efate and Luganville has reported little or no land units there so most of the ground units commited to first wave will probably not even land and will be transferred directly to support the second wave.

btw, the invasion fleet STILL hasn't been detected

1st Wave.

The targets for this invasion force will be Luganville and Efate islands. Luganville, being closer, will be invaded first and then Efate will be taken.

Ground units assigned to this force are -

Luganville:

16th Division
64th Naval Guards
67th Naval Guards
19th Engineering Rgt.
20th Engineering Rgt.
144th IJN Base Force
143th IJN Base Force
145th IJA Base Force

Efate:

35th Brigade
21st Mixed Brigade
Yokosuka 6th SNLF
Yokosuka 8th SNLF
43rd Naval Guards
Sasebo 5th SNLF
145th IJN Base Force
144th IJA Base Force
146th IJA Base Force
9th Base Force
31st Special Base Force
1st Aviation Regiment
34th Road Construction Batallion
15th Construction Batallion

They and their supplies are transported and escorted by -

7 Light cruisers
15 Destroyers
1 Minelayer
4 Gun Boats
2 Patrol Boats
8 Minesweepers
210 Troop Transports
15 Transports

2nd Wave.

This wave will target New Caledonia. It will land either at La Foa or Koumac which are north of Noumea and then will advance to Noumea. This wave will launch after Luganville and Efate are secured

Ground units assigned to this force are -

7th Division
38th Division
2nd Division
5th Division
65th Brigade
8th Heavy Field Arillery Rgt.
44th Naval Guards
2nd Army Corps HQ
143rd IJA Base Force
143rd IJNAF Base Force
144th IJNAF Base Force
145th IJNAF Base Force

They and their supplies are transported and escorted by -

4 Light Cruisers
19 Destroyers
4 Patrol Boats
14 Gunboats
19 Minesweepers
76 Troop Transports
20 Transports.

The smaller number of transport craft assigned reflects the assumption that the taskforces will land with no opposition as the beaches are to be taken by a paradrop from Lunga airfield and Guadalcanal

This will consist of -

1st Para Rgt.
2nd Para Rgt.
2nd Yokosuka SNLF

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

All those vunerable transports and escorts are being covered by the mighty combined fleet. There are three surface combat taskforces, with the purpose of defending the convoys and bombarding the beaches, which consist of

11 Battleships
10 Heavy Cruisers
15 Destroyers

Aircover and support will be provided by three carrier division which consist of

8 Fleet Carriers
3 Light Carriers
3 Escort Carriers
5 Heavy Cruisers
3 Scout Cruisers (float plane carriers)
2 Light Cruisers
14 Destroyers

They carry

300 A6M2 Zero fighters with an additional 15 in reserve
178 D3A Val dive bombers with an additional 13 in reserve
181 B5N Kate torpedo bombers with an addtional 15 in reserve
18 A6M2-N Rufe float fighters
and several dozen float search and recon planes

Also operating together with the invasion group is an ASW group of 6 destroyers and a replenishment taskforce of 2 fleet oilers and 2 destroyers.

edit: oh yeah, 32 submarines are screening the targets.

We also have about 150 Army level bombers and about 100-150 landbased fighters to base into newly captured bases. More can be brought in if nessecary.

And of all of it String the thing that bugs me the most.....

"btw, the invasion fleet STILL hasn't been detected"

Ever since that little fiasco my B17's help out the PBY's on LR Search.

It reduces my 4E bomber strength until I get PB4Y's but I aint ever gonna get caught like that one again !!!!!

Ayup. I think the first notification you got was when my bombardment fleets hit Luganville (or was it Efate?) The transports were only 120 miles away by then. [:-]

My recon sucks (I am, however, not blaming the game. I am not making proper use of assets.)
For what we are about to receive, may we be truly thankful.

Yup use all those early forts for bombing then dont complain if the IJN sneaks up on you.

Another quiet turn Wasile looks like its been reinforced I may be striking to deep but I need to go for it I need to force him to disperse his combat power or else I will have no chance

OK time to fall on my sword !!!

I screwed the pooch tried to send in a low risk invasion of Kai (figured it would be low priority)

And set the PT Boats on escort to retire so they didnt hang about and the Aoba BG did the rest.

OK I am picking up over 500 fighters at Morotoi and over 400 Aux thate some pretty hefty overstacking.

Welll I am going to try and make him pay for it.

I am concentrating P38J's at Sarmi and B24J's at Aitape and Sarmi very low key.

As soon as they are recovered and ready I will send in the heavies to teach him a lesson about overstacking (I hope!!!!)

I am delaying the armada approaching that area to a crawl to give my AF time to get the job done

I am curious how such long "training programme" affects your bases in China? How many supply do you have? What is status of your units there? Mostly disrupted or in quite good shape? It's of course low-priority request...

I will check it out tonight from recollection Chengtu has all the supplies as my AF is based there but due to the withdraw/free upgrade bug I am sitting the Chinese and remnant RAF out of the war.

If a US base getsw close enough I may transfer the RAF out

Aye but unless he does another massive reinforcement effort I actually expect to take the base I got 1 to 1 yesterday and I am sending in the convoy again tonight screeneed by PT Boats.

But yes I screwed up there not keeping my forces concentrated and keeping the PT Boat screen in place

OK I dont have the combat report for yesterday but it was a weird one. A 2 x CVE TF reacted towards my fleet with a BB in close escort. (I forget which one)

My CV's en masse then reacted towards them.

The CAP over them and a lone AP was formidable and I ended up losing 40 fighters shooting down over 100 plus (but a lot of Oscars)

I sank the two CVE's and damaged the BB

The Japanese have over 400+  fighters on CAP over Morotoi and lots of "aux" on the AF.

The only reason I can think of for him to have that many Georges and Jacks at Morotoi is a trap for my Carriers.

i.e. get me to react close enough to shred my fighters the hit my carriers with a massive Betty raid.

I am going to have to think through what I do next but I am tempted to go in en masse

Iowa BG on Bombardment to damage enemy aircraft
Tromp BG on Surface to knock off barges
LBA pound the AF and attrit the CAP
All my carriers follow up to hit the AF hard

Going to think about it I would have to delay Wasile for a day or so if I do it.

Why not hit it with your LBA and LBA fighter escort? Keep your carriers and the Iowa battlegroup away -- if he is looking to trap your carriers, then don't risk being wrong about your capabilities. Let the army air force do the dirty work and preserve the carriers.
PZB has over 800 aircraft on Morotoi and half of the remaining surface fleet of the IJN !!!!

The Iowa BG would run into some trouble if half the IJN is there, why risk a bunch of long lance hits so far from a useful repair base? Damaged vessels that far from home will become "Betty-meat" as they limp back.

Make him play to your strategy, otherwise you've surrendered the initiative to him and at this point you should be the one pushing him around.

Aye I think you are correct I will send in my Heavies with all the P38J's I can find to try and take the sting out of the place.

I have been preparing for this option but I am slightly loathe to try it as my escorts will be tired

Yeah, youdo run the risk of some LBA losses with that, although your aircraft generally outclass him. Better they take the losses than some mishap like your naval squadrons not taking off or hitting a stray AK witha superstrike and leaving the Iowa and your CVs exposed.

From the Allied side, I'm a big believer in softening up targets with LBA as much as possible before sending in more fragile assets. Actually I believe that should be the Japanese strategy by this point too as his naval assets can't go toe to toe with yours -- I assume that is why he's got his fleet under such a large air armada. Well, two can play that game and the Allies can play it better.
