and the third one, the smalles Lightning squadron... now this squadron meets the most fighters as usual but also gets a near endless dive, taking out most of the enemy resistance... due to the numerical superiority of the enemy the dive ended at some point though which immedietely changed the situation, seeing one Lightning downed, another damaged (crashing with a third one on the way home)... with the dive, the Lightnings take out 7 or 8 enemy fighters for no loss, without the dive, they lose 2 of their own for no enemy shot down... dive? anyone?

ORIGINAL: castor troy

this is the freighter convoy that is going back and forth bringing supplies and fuel to Adak... low value freighters so if something bad would happen, it wouldn´t be that bad... [:D]

Sucks to be on an AKL in my game, they get the most awful jobs of all. [:D]

They are actually good at it as well, as their tonnage is so low they can get into tiny forward ports, ditch the load and get out again asap.

18 fighters of the first squadron, then 2x5 of both squadrons, you can imagine that we´re going to see 18 fighters of the second squadron following... sorry, but this is just stupid turn after turn after turn... even if it would be ok to have things screwed up all the time then why is it always screwing it up the same? Both squadrons lost the same number of fighters on their way to target? Always the same... Yeah sure, what a ridicoulos design...

nice attack Rainer! this came by surprise, I accidently had all my fighters set to 30% LRCAP instead of Cap [X(] so this could have turned out costly if we would have seen more enemy aircraft... note that not one enemy fighter bomber was hit by dozens of flak guns coming in at 100ft... you sure can´t rely on flak at all in AE, seems like it´s even more pathetic than in WITP... where´s Nik?

7 Nicks did quite some damage, we had more than a dozen aircraft reported damaged on the ground, none were destroyed though and damage was repaired at the end of the turn... it was kind of a shocking effect though... Nadzab took over from PM being the most important airfield in the area, being a level 9 airfield, there´s no stacking limit here... Nadzab will support any attacks going further North or East...

we could only be happy about our troops taking down the enemy combat strenght because our adjusted av would have never been enough to take the base... now that the enemy combat strenght is more or less gone, we get at least 1:1 or 2:1 attacks... adjusted av still is a joke though... none of our attacks even got 50% of our base av, which is totally depressing as our troops were in perfect combat condition...

here comes the numero uno anti shipping weapon of the Allied arsenal, the PB4Y-1 Liberator of the USNAF... that´s what I´ve meant with "if Darwin´s airfield is closed it will become suicide to move a convoy there"... my guess would be that this is (was [;)]) a supply transport to the enemy divisions holding out at Darwin. There were no enemy fighters at the base and not even light rain could prevent our USN Liberators from obliberating the convoy. As mentioned a couple of times already, lownav is the way to go if you want to attack shipping with bombs, guess that´s quite realistic and definetely also a step forward from WITP with it´s standard attack alt of 6000ft. You got to do the lownav training though. These Liberators had crews with lownav skill of 65-70 and they really are a mighty weapon against enemy shipping. Long range (17 hexes normal range), they attack with full bomb load (not in this case as we´ve got the airfield overstacked - the only reason I can make out as I´ve seen them attacking with full load already, what makes me wonder are the B-17 attacking with full load [&:]) and what really is important, they are very tough and got an excellent defensive armament, making these babies a real threat to enemy carriers too.

This supports my thoughts about the enemy now being in real trouble having his divisions stuck in Darwin. 2000+ av worth of troops at Darwin being sieged by my Australian Army with the airfield under constant air attacks by heavy bombers and the dot bases to the South East being built up asap will make it a hard task to save these troops. With Corsairs, torp carrying Beauforts and Mitchell attack bombers in range of Darwin´s port, this will only further darken the Japanese situation in Northern Austalia. I guess the situation change here came as surprising to Rainer as to me and it now seems to mean that he was late to abandon the Darwin area. Every day that passes should make the situation worse for the enemy.

All but one bomb hit were achieved by the Liberators... 36 at the base, 29 flew the concentrated attack... the only enemy ship class that could withstand attacks of these Liberators would be enemy BBs, everything else is in trouble to be heavily hit by 500lb bombs...

follow on strike from Merauke (no strike from Horn Island), all my heavy bombers are set to naval attack in case they don´t have to fly a ground attack... either they launch a nav strike or are treated as having rested... I´ve first been amazed by all these bomb hits but the 4Es from 10000ft had to only hit burning wrecks... unfortunetely our bombers didn´t attack in the morning, otherwise none of the freighters would have escaped... it still was a massacre, guess 9 or 10 out of the dozen freighters were sunk... if the enemy keeps the remaining one or two freighters at Darwin, the ship(s) will be sunk tomorrow I guess... if this was a supply convoy, then not much supplies will reach Darwin...

Rabaul has to be closed as long as we´re unloading at Shortlands... Rabaul is a level 6 airfield and I don´t want to suddenly see 100 enemy bombers supported by another 200 fighters there to attack our shipping at Shortlands... needless to say, I also don´t want to see KB show up... Munda received 150 fighters to support my fleet... defeating some small to medium sized strikes should be possible, an all out attack with another single 500+ aircraft strike would mean that the USN would stop existing...

also Hollandia´s level 3 airfield gets visited... other than Rabaul, there are no airfields in the area that are a real threat, none of them was built up by the enemy so the enemy´s possibilities to fly land based attacks are quite limited... this IMO clearly shows the need of a couple of airfields of appropriate size supporting each other to enable you to strike at the enemy...

the two 100 ship invasion convoy´s are far from unloading... [:(] glad I´m getting more and more APA/AKA, AP/AK and LCT now... if you aren´t in a hurry, you can use xAP and xAK for an invasion, but if you´re threated by enemy air or naval attacks then you really need to unload from dedicated transports...

Ground combat at Shortlands (109,131)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 14365 troops, 136 guns, 42 vehicles, Assault Value = 543

Defending units:

25th Infantry Div /2
2nd RNZAF Base Force /1
177th USAAF Base Force /2

as you can see, our units are still listed as fragments but what really was kind of shocking was to see the next enemy division... where does the enemy get so many divisions from? Two divs have already been completely destroyed during the assaults on the bases on New Guinea, now the next div is sitting in the Solomons. 2-2500 av are sitting at Darwin and another 7000+ at the border between Thailand and Burma... and I guess that´s not all yet... it already looks like Shortlands will be a tougher target than expected, recon reported 25000 troops on the island but there are 10000 less troops but obviously much better units than I expected...

7 enemy divisions plus a lot of other strong units are holding the jungle hex North of Moulmein... more than 2000 av are sitting at Chiang Mai and another 19 units are reported at Moulmein... again the question, where are all these units coming from? No chance to break through here, I´ve immediately ordered more of my units into the hex, hoping not to see a shock attack by the enemy tomorrow... if a shock attack drives me out of the hex, then the enemy could mount a massive counterattack and Burma would be threated again... [X(] a realy dangerous situation because my units are kind of out of position as I´ve moved them over the river moving East instead of South East to shock attack into this enemy position. Therefore the enemy would throw us out of the hex into the hex East of Pegu and he could move into Pegu! Now that would be a scenario...

unloading a second day was a must, not being able to unload all troops today I can only hope the enemy won´t intervene with the fleet here... I´ve decided to keep unloading until most or all of our troops are disembarked... three of my freighters ran aground during unloading already, they aren´t sunk yet but I doubt they got a chance to survive...

since I have deleted all search archs in my patrol squadrons, they are spotting ships like wild, while we hardly spotted anything with search archs before... this and the fact that the Liberators attack with great success means that we obliberate another convoy, this time one that was heading to Biak... only a handful of Rufes defending the ships, Rainer has to ramp up his fighter protection if he moves in convoys IMO... don´t know how the situation regarding air support is at Biak, it´s a level 3 airfield... guess at least 50-60 Tojos would be needed to be a threat against the incoming bombers... the bombers wouldn´t be stopped but perhaps at least some would be downed and the hit rate could be lower...

another one of these nuissance raids with Nick fighter bombers... Rainer is doing good recon over my bases so he´s aware where I´ve got fighters and where not... Lae only has two dozen bombers and some patrols so the base seemed to be a nice target for such a raid, but there was a single Aussie Spitfire from Nadzab (level 9 airfield complex) showing up over Lae, taking down two of the fighter bombers... [:D] no damage done to any Allied aircraft... flak fire was non existent...

the Liberators succesfully attack the next freighter... the bombers also take down a Zero and drive off the rest... I wouldn´t want to move Japanese carriers into range of these bombers... we´re soon going to have another dozen of them more with trained crews... and within the next two weeks we´re going to have another squadron, bringing the strenght up to 60 IIRC... not enough 70 skill crews available yet but that should change soon... placing 60 of these bombers somewhere will make moving any shipping in range a very dangerous task... 60 of these bombers launching against KB is surely not something Rainer wants to see I guess...

that was surprising, the follow on sweep of the Corsairs got NO ongoing dive, it was over after two or three passes... being more dynamic is what I would like to see, just like in this engagement... here you could say, the enemy was bounced and after one or two fighters were shot down the dogfighting began...

visiting Dobo (base 500 miles NE of Darwin) as this seems to be the staging base for recons and Nells on nav search... haven´t got enough heavy bombers nor bases to put them in in that area to suppress every airfield in the area, especially when we´ve got to fly a hell a lot of sorties to keep Darwin more or less in damaged state...

100% prepped, everything´s looking good, as usual neither a positive nor a negative multiplier but also as usual an adjusted av that is nothing but a joke... the fact that the enemy gets a better adjusted than base av is ok with me, forts and jungle should give them an advantage, bombing them is once again completely useless it seems... but why on Earth are we always getting adjusted av that are nothing but a joke... now this wasn´t a real problem in the past because (as mentioned by the officials quite often) it´s not all about av and you should look at the damage done... in the past, we got horrible adjusted av but we dished out some damage and suffered "ok" losses but today, I´ve completely shredded one of my divisions... the unit is now down to 80/100 but has more than 25% of the combat squads disabled... we on the other side did no damage to the defender... this more looks like a Japanese banzai charge than an Allied deliberate attack of 100% prepped troops... [8|]

the invasion FAILED... without bringing serious reinforcements I won´t be able to do anything here... bombing LCUs means nothing, bombing and having isolated the base for months obviously also has meant nothing... am going to land two more divisions (prepping for another target) at the dot base North of Shortlands and will march them down to Shortlands... estimated time to march through the jungle hex is 12-14 days... first a para unit will seize the dot base (something I planned to do anyway because I didn´t want to see the enem retreating to that dot after being kicked out of Shortlands) and then a USN base force will disembark to provide nav support for the two INF divs following... 140 combat squads destroyed/disabled in the first attack is just horrible...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at Munda (111,134)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 20577 troops, 433 guns, 426 vehicles, Assault Value = 737

Defending force 29 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1

Allied adjusted assault: 184

Japanese adjusted defense: 1

Allied assault odds: 184 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(-), disruption(-), fatigue(-)
supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
13 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
13th Canadian Brigade
II Aus Corps Engineer Battalion
14th NZ Brigade
18th British Division
178th USAAF Base Force
222nd USN Base Force
USN AirCenPac

Defending units:
23rd Air Flotilla /1

and then I´ve thought Munda would have been a tough target but at least I could take this base with my horrible 50% adjusted av at best... no idea why the adjusted av look that bad with 100% prepped troops and the game is not giving any info, neither positive nor negative multipliers... so perhaps then you could expect an adjusted av = base av? no, obviously not...

same here... 1/1/43 saw a hit ratio reduction on enemy escorts by feeled 75%... from 94% total hits (months of statistics) to something like 35% on escorts with 90% duds if we hit... and then you would think it´s good to get into 1/43 to see a reduction of duds to 50%...

that damned air HQ fragment still refuses to die... as it´s a fragment now, I´m sure Rainer pulled out enough squads to have the parent elsewhere to rebuild... pretty sure I´m going to meet all units again that I´ve "destroyed" so far...

Scattershooting on Shortlands invasion:

Your USarmy lcus are probably close to 50xp. Think that means a 50% cut in your adjusted av right off the top. Then you have to adjust for fatigue/disruption effects.

Kinda suprised that they still have supply considering all the effort expended in isolating it.

I usually try to match whatever the targets lcus are by 3-1.

Your backup plan is a good one.

Not that there is much difference between '42 and '43 USinf squads stats, were the 24th and 25th upgraded to '43 yet?

The '43 USMC upgrade rules.

but shouldn´t I get an "experience (-)" for it. I guess 50 exp wouldn´t mean attacking with halve of their av though as this would mean that only 99 exp units would attack with their full, well 99%, av and all other would get an "experience (-)" but I see this only with very low exp units. While my adjusted av at Munda and now at Shortlands both times got totally shredded, I didn´t get any negative multipliers. The two divs should be both around 60 exp IIRC, none of them has upgraded to 43 squads already, there aren´t yet enough squads in the pool to do so, only base force and rgts have changed over to 43 squads.

So far having two divs vs one div plus support or only nav guard units and stuff like that worked very well, took out two enemy divs and several smaller units with such force on New Guinea already. All my contested invasions so far consisted of two inf divs (or one div plus rgts equivalent to another div) plus a naval base force and an airforce base force and it only started to get a bit slow during the recent Munda invasion, but Shortland´s defenders stopped me cold after the first attack. Landing two US Inf divs plus the two base forces and supplies takes two 100 ship invasion TFs so if I would have to bring another div in the invasion it would take me at least another 50 transports. And then it would again take me at least three days to unload all troops.

Now that it´s 4/43 I´ve also got AK/AP, AKA/APA and LST available but for sure not enough to carry three divs, two base forces and supplies, so landing such a force would again require hundreds of xAP or xAK as backup.

Especially when I think about all the air attacks over months I would think that 2:1 of major LCUs (with more firepower than the enemy) would be sufficient. Thought wrong about it as the airattacks just seem to mean nothing (something I´ve been thinking about lots of times already). The stalled Shortlands invasion is no biggy, moving in the other two divs and marching them into the base won´t take that long and I´m in no hurry anyway and the reinforcment divs are prepping for a target that I´m not going to attack within the next three months anyway.

here´s the combat report showing the first attack at Lae for example:

Ground combat at Lae (99,126)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 21397 troops, 404 guns, 574 vehicles, Assault Value = 756

Defending force 19804 troops, 186 guns, 48 vehicles, Assault Value = 588

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 3

Allied adjusted assault: 782

Japanese adjusted defense: 1999

Allied assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 3)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
343 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 53 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 47 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
843 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 67 disabled
Non Combat: 6 destroyed, 79 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Vehicles lost 41 (2 destroyed, 39 disabled)

Assaulting units:
Americal Infantry Division
40th Infantry Division
I US Amphib Corps

Defending units:
19th Naval Guard Unit
12th Division
89th Naval Guard Unit
2nd Naval Construction Battalion
38th Field AA Battalion
26th Air Flotilla
3rd Naval Construction Battalion
38th JNAF AF Unit

that was a couple of months ago, as you can see, even if our attack failed, the divs had an adjusted av of more or less their base av. These units didn´t have any better exp than those assaulting Shortlands at the moment. Also here, no positive or negative multipliers at all. AND one important side note here, these units weren´t 100% prepped for the target either, I guess they´ve been at something like 60%, while the Shortlands and Munda invaders all were/are at 100% prepped. I don´t get it... [&:]

Can see your point. Can't recall the corps command bonus atm that may be significant tho. Might compare 24/25 ID commanders w/ your Amercial/40 ID commanders to see if there is a difference as well.

Like you said it's not a big deal, the reinforcing divisions will just take a little time to get into position.

I´ve changed (if needed) all commanders of my frontline divs long ago and usually take a look at them when I load the divs up on the invasion transports, all of them should be ok and all of them usually got more or less the same stats. I´ve gone through all known possibilities so far but couldn´t figure out what the problem is to get an adjusted av being equal to the base av at least. I don´t have a HQ in the invasion because there are only very few HQs I can prep and use for my invasions and Shortlands surely wasn´t a that important target to have a HQ prep for it.

Shortlands isn´t a broken leg, but imagine I´m going for a more important target, let´s say Rabaul. I´ve got lots of units (including a HQ) prepping for Rabaul, the enemy got 32!!! units there. Now if I´m going to land five divs there and my adjusted av stays what it was at Munda and what it is at Shortlands now then I´m probably screwed because if I only get 1000 adjusted av at best with 100% prepped troops then forget about taking Rabaul with F I V E divisions.

yup, follow on stranglers meet more fighters... could this be fixed at some point? No, probably not, it´s stupid but it´s working as designed... fighter squadrons in WWII always lost two or three fighters on the way to target and always squadrons flew their missions on their own... always... working as designed and stupid...

another freighter hit today but also not showing heavy damage... guess most of the freighters that are hit by a torp sink, no matter if they show up as heavily damaged or not... especially if they aren´t disbanded into a big port within one or two turns at the latest... Rainer just lately told me that he´s got so many freighters that he doesn´t really care about the losses to my subs... and it´s a bigger pity to lose the fuel on the tankers than the hulls... [X(] am not sure about the AKs but I guess the statement about tankers was pure propaganda... at least I hope so...
