Turn 117

Overall
We finally breach the river south of Moscow, and even our infantry seems to grasp the importance of this, and is able to move west on Moscow. A plan has been devised in the basement of Führer HQ, and has been sent to the commanders to be implemented next turn. Not too many attacks this turn since Brad is now behind major rivers in alot of places, but enough still to keep the momentum. 57 attacks results in 6 helds, 46 retreats, 5 routs and 1 surrender.
The only thing that is subpar this turn is the number of trapped USSR units, but we are certain this will pick up again soon.

USSR units in pockets at start of turn
1.

USSR units in pockets at end of turn
6 + 2 that will walk.

Losses
USSR : 110.000 troops, 1.745 guns, 81 AFVs, 482 AC.
Axis : 35.000 troops, 346 guns, 88 AFVs, 80 AC.

Total Losses
USSR : 13.048.000 troops, 246.149 guns, 35.110 AFVs, 38.539 AC.
Axis : 3.137.000 troops, 40.328 guns, 9.677 AFVs, 7.983 AC.

USSR units lost
1 Rifle Division.

German units disbanded
None.

Partisans hunted down
8.

German pools
Manpower : 210.274
Vehicles : 248.280
Armaments : 556.166
Hiwi : 114.780
Manpower and Armaments drop slightly each turn now due to more and more troops being switched from static mode, which leads to increased "non combat" losses.

Victory Points
219.

Remember some closeups for pics of this turn. Also several turns ago we had a look at 2 panzer divisions can we see them again to note the changes in their status and TO&E? Thanks! May the dice roll in your favor!

Fantastic progress... Who'd have thought that Moscow would still be in reach for you only 20 turns ago? Now it looks like there is very little between you and Moscow that is of serious concern?

What are the fort levels you are encountering? I'd expect your opponent spent the past year building fort belt behind fort belt around Moscow, with at least two of the belts having expanded to >= level 3 structures at this point? Or was your opponent overly self-confident of his victory after not having been wiped out at the Barbarossa stage and skipped setting up serious defensive measures?

Terje

Keep in mind that one part of poor Russian C&C is that a lot of this OOB consists of logistic, airbases and command infrastructure since a much greater fraction of HQ and staff are needed to achieve even the poor control it can exert in 1942 -- not even speaking about achieving the same as the Wehrmacht can with its slimmer structure. Depending on how Terje's opponent managed that part, I'd guess that at best 4M to 4.3M men belong to fighting formations. If one assumes that the average morale/experience of these guys fared as badly as their overall number, we have the first AAR that shows that Wehrmacht can completely turn the coin even in 1942...

Terje, if the pools run too dry, I'd disband all the fort zones. AP loss or not. In this situation a major autovictory is in reach, if not almost sure. I'd put all on that card, it will never look any better. And even if you stall short of it, your opponent will take a year to recover, in which he will be slow or mostly unable to advance. That would give you plenty of time to restart building fortifications.

Will see what I can do once we get rolling again (Brad have to do a complete reinstall of his PC before anything else happens).
Not sure if both Pz's are available anymore, but I will look for them, sure.

1. Hehe, not me. when I did this turn, I looked at Poltova and how far behind the front it is now. That city was one of my goals for -42!!

2. So far, lvl 0-2 (2s in only a few locations), and the units in/around Moscow have only been present for a few turns so far. I do not think Brad have had the units to dig in the rear tbh.

3. Yup, but there is no immediate concern, as the drop rate is still rather low.

4. I agree, BUT it requires two things I think, a) the capture of Moscow, and b) that I manage to roll up the corps formations Brad has to the south.

5. True, but for now I will keep the lines I have. There is not likely to be many more built for now though.

Not really fair to compare I think, as my game as the USSR was the first pbem game I played (and only the 2nd in total), however I always like playing the underdog (Axis/CSA etc) (with the exception of witp where the economy scares me).

The USSR feels more like patching stuff up long enough for the Axis to wear themself out, while the Axis needs to look for oppertunities all throughout the game. In that aspect too, the Axis are far more fun.

And let us all face it, swearing at a pool of Tigers is far more fun than swearing at a pool of IS's [:D]

Turn 118

Overall
The push resumes after Virtual Stalin has his errr maps and phonelines working again [:)]
The main effort is around Moscow, and we push closer to the city. However, the disbandment of the 2nd Pz Army could not come at a worse time, so some of our Pzs are "white". Speed is also not what I would like, but that is what you get from fighting with tired troops far from railheads I suppose.
82 attacks results in 8 helds, 63 retreats, 5 routs, 1 shatter and 5 surrenders this turn

USSR units in pockets at start of turn
6.

USSR units in pockets at end of turn
3 + 1 that will walk.

Losses
USSR : 160.000 troops, 2.866 guns, 54 AFVs, 531 AC.
Axis : 39.000 troops, 463 guns, 111 AFVs, 162 AC.

USSR units lost
7 Rifle Divisions.

German units disbanded
None.

Partisans hunted down
11.

German pools
Manpower : 195.795
Vehicles : 252.025
Armaments : 557.211
Hiwi : 130.806

Victory Points
220.

What level activity is there from the Red Air Force? That's the one area where Oloren has vastly superior numbers, and his foot sloggers could use help.

Just a suggestion: you might want to attach a few SUs to your high morale PzG divisions to give them more 'bite' as their TOE is a bit low. Pioneers and Flak as they do not use much fuel themselves? Concentrating force will be important to take Moscow...

Pretty much all of my Pz Divs are of high morale, and most of them have 3 su's, not sure why these do not.
Oh, and btw are you saying that 47 tanks in a Pz Div is not alot? [:D]
Hehe nah I am short on tanks in all regards...save Tigers....

Sounds like a lot of Sturmoviks sitting around slowly rusting away instead of helping their comrades on the ground. [&:]
