For tomorrow, I decided to strike Truk, and I understand there will be risks involved. My assumptions are:

- KB is far away, and it won't be a factor next turn.
- He has rushed all bombers and Zeroes from Rabaul to Truk, Roi-Namur and maybe even Wake... they should be fatigued after the long trip
- There should not be HQ-a --> torpedoes at Truk.. any damage received will be from bombs
- There must be some interesting support/ auxiliary vessels on Truk, as it is the main port of the SE Area
- He should be in lock-down mode right now, so there won't be a lot of valuable targets in range


TF is going full speed to guarantee it is within 6 hexes of Truk by early morning, I have a setup of Naval Attack + Port: Truk. This means an afternoon strike and increases the chances of the sweep coming before the naval strike.

The Battleships and Heavy Cruisers will do a standard naval bombing run tomorrow, then leave to PH

The CVs are at DL = 2/2 ... so yes, he can see the TF, with minimal details, but enough to do the 1+1=2 and send carriers in that direction

I am sure last turn he was pants down, after all check how long it took them to get spotted, and there are 2 other massive TF near Wake that are not yet spotted.

Problem is, with the transfer range of 2E bombers and Zeroes, tomorrow it will be a different picture, still I think the game put some penalties to squadrons recently rebased; they might not even fly tomorrow other than CAP missions

And ADM King would have my balls if I just retreat now, so let it be!

Only one DB squadron attacked that xAKL so he might figure on only one CV and not pull everything to Truk in case the other 2 are going to other areas, like the Marshalls. He would have to keep some assets at other bases just in case you sent one CV on a raid-n-run decoy mission. At level 2 DL I doubt he has info on TF composition.

I won't have the turn until tomorrow [:(] [:(] as Steve is busy. But he sent the combat replay. He guessed correctly I was planning to bomb Truk as the CAP there was powerful

- Wake bombardment was soo fun to watch [:D]. Moreover, I know now that AV Kimikawa Maru is there... the carriers will pay a visit in the next few turns

- Truk strike ended been very similar to December 7th' Pearl Harbor, not the real PH but my PBEM's version; multiple BBs damaged, but nothing too serious, "Oscar" CAP was very strong and the dive bombers paid a heavy price. Casualties on the combat report are deceptively low. I will update the real figures once I get the turn
* "garbage class" cruiser Kashima will likely sink EDIT: Sinking Confirmed in August 6th
* BBs Nagato and Yamashiro will require some yard time


- Having a ASW TF following the carriers worked very well, as it pinned down a submarine that might have causes trouble

I count 24 hits from 149 DB - not a great result but given the 60 Oscars vs 36 F4Fs I am sure quite a few DB had a fighter on their tail during their attacks.
Dang that xAKL!

Kashima may be "garbage" because of its lack of armour (in RL it was a training cruiser) but it is useful to the Japanese as a Fast Transport ship. I forget how many troops/how much stuff it can haul.

I hope the AV is still at Wake on your way back with the CVs!

Yes the Oscars certainly hinder the accuracy; moreover, look how many released bombs at 4,000 or 3,000 feet... c'mon boys!! the Vals release at 1,000 feets easily.... you can do better [:D]

I think I will detach some DDs to remain in Wake just to be sure Kimikawa Maru doesn't escape
and yes, I won't mind sinking any cruiser, Kashima is a valuable ship

Certainly not bad results at Truk. And as jwolf succinctly stated, having the initiative is going to really make your opponent think!

Am surprised to by what you found at Truk - I expected more merchies/auxillaries in harbor. I also expected to see every Zero and Netty in range flown in to reach out for your CVs. Encountering only Oscars as CAP also surprises me.

So, I'd be curious - where is his land based naval air?? Is he THAT weak in SOPAC/SWPAC in IJN LBA?

I cannot complain at all.... It was a fully coordinated strike of almost 200 planes, arriving perfectly timed after the morning sweep. Other than the fact than both the Sweeping and escorting Wildcats performed well below average compared to the Oscars. That in part due to my decision to use less trained Marine squadron on the offensive and keep the best (Navy) fighters squadrons on CAP..
Under less fortunate circumstances, like escorts not linking or a piece meal attack it would had been much worst.

As per the # of merchants/ auxiliaries... I won't know what was there, problem is bombers focused on the battleships, so it is entirely possible the auxiliaries were there but simply ignored.
Another possibility is that he has moved most auxiliaries to Rabaul and Tulagi, he just recently invaded Ndeni and makes sense to push forward any support closer to the front


And there are units of the IJN in the SW Pacific, just a turn ago (before the surprise; combat reports attached) he did 2 night bombings on Luganville using Betties, likely based on Rabaul (L6) or Russel (L4). I was also expecting to see Zeroes today, but maybe he based them on Roi-Namur instead? Zeroes have a longer transfer range, so assuming Rabaul as the starting point, it might had made sense to transfer Oscars to the much closer base (Truk) and Zeroes to the farther away base (Roi).
And I didn't bomb the airfield, thus I don't know if he re-based bombers there... I will know tomorrow [;)]

I re-run the combat replay to count the losses (no turn back yet), and they are as follow:

- 10 Wildcats F4 in total, on both the Sweep and Escort missions

- 12 SB-3; ten due to air-to-air (pre and post strike), 1 due to ballons, 1 due to AA... notice how light the AA was

- 3 SB-2; all due to air-to-air

- Only 2 Oscars shot down [:(]


This of course will become bigger once the operational losses are added.

CL Kashima got three 1,000 pound penetration hits, so there is a good chance of sinking. If it ends sinking, then the Truk raid would had been more successful than our PBEM Pearl Harbor (zero ships sunk). We will see.

The carriers will withdraw trying to avoid Roi-Namur and Saipan but remaining within strike distance of Truk; I just don't believe there are torpedoes at Truk, while I strongly suspect there are in Roi and I have no clue on Saipan. So I am willing to risk a long range naval strike if it is coming from Truk.

The loss of 3 Jakes is interesting. Unless your CAP shot down Jake snoopers, they would have gone down on ships, and I don't know if Kashima could have carried three of them.

According to the combat report, the BBs TF destroyed 1 Jake and damaged 7 on the naval bombardment of Wake island.
So the natural explanation is that the 3 ground losses reported are coming from the bombing, with some inflated numbers due to FOW

That said, who knows; CL Kashima is capable of carrying 1 FP (2 considering reserves). It starts the scenario carrying 1 Alf; but we are already in June, so it is possible that he has replaced it with a Jake.

June 6th was a day of surprises:
- Diego Garcia was bombed by a battleship/ cruiser TF
- Airfield strike at Vizagapatnam was a complete success
- USN carriers were not spotted/ attacked last turn, their DL is zero again.


Lets start with the first surprise: Diego Garcia. The fact that there was going to be a bombing there was of course completely expected, however I was hoping to get some advanced notice before it happened; I had several Albacores and a few Seagulls on naval search; I bet he estimated the range of the search planes and rushed full speed in the last leg of the trip.

Results were bad of course, but not horrendously bad:
- CVL Hermes was hit twice, but somehow it was not damaged; if anything this turn it shows less damage than the turn ago.
- I had 2 DDs on ASW: old Vampire and Arunta (a nice Tribal [:(]) Both were sunk.[:@]
- 4 Fulmars, 1 Martlet, 1 Albacore destroyed
- Airfield runway damage: 47, service damage: 31, port: 6

Tomorrow there will be a second bombardment... then I expect to see a carrier TF coming to finish Hermes.
We will see how it goes, I have very little to throw to defend Diego Garcia: 2 submarines within range, 2 more nearby. I also created a SCTF with BB Revenge and 5 DDs; these are the "intact" survivors of the battle of Andaman Sea. They will move to Diego Garcia, problem is they are in Bombay, too far away.

Everything worked according to plan on Vizagapatnam:
- the first sweep done by P-40s of AVG destroyed 4 Oscars and returned home without losses [;)]
- second sweep found and damaged 1 Oscar
- then 4 bombing raids, only the 1st was challenged, unsuccessfully, by a lone Oscar
- all bombers drop their bombs unopposed, airfield damage ended at 56 points

The Battleships will do a second bombardment, while the heavy cruisers will patrol Wake to avoid the damaged AV to run away.

Interesting to see the base report at Truk; no bombers!!

In terms of detection levels, the carriers are at zero, the cruisers at 7/7 and the battleships at 2/4; this likely coming from the Jakes at Wake.
