Back to the war, sorry for the lack of updates. Weeks are busy. It's going ahead regularly though, and the game is just as intense and fascinating as it's been all along.
After the sub contacts in the straits not much happening other than massive Soviet air strikes against troops in the 111,43 hex near Mutankiang. Over 300 2E and 4E hit the troops for minimal effect in the x3 rough forest, and when it came time for the ground forces to attack they found a well entrenched and experienced IJA defiant and strong. The attack came off at 1:2, and not close to even. Ouch.
Since we're overstacked here and he's reinforcing it's time to pull back and swing troops around to where they'll be more effective, again. Strangely supply has been plentiful even though we were at 85k in a 55k hex. Not much disruption either. The troops left to block will easily hold the hex and the quick moving tank brigades will aim for the Koutou pocket, hopefully arriving before the IJA can escape. Other forces may swing up to the NE to hit the positions around Sunwu.
This war is about mobility as much as anything. Hit em where they're not, all with the plan of quickly expanding the frontline forward while shortening the overall front distance and taking the forward IJA railheads. I want to be in a situation where once the better IJ airframes are online and the air war is untenable, the troops on the ground can hold and the AA will take precedence.

This is important. Having vacated the hex to go and take Padang, the Japanese left Benkolen open and the refugee units sitting one hex away just moved in to take it. This is timed to match the approach of some just a few days away. I'll fly in some air support, some supply, and have a few days to get ready to cover the invasion. At Palembang Lowpe has a level 5 field, lots of fighters and some bombers, but could fly in a lot more. Before all troops arrive I'll need to challenge the CAP there and whittle down the fighter cover. That requires Merak to get to level 2 airfields. It's nearly there, so all is on track.
This map shows the extended plans for landings and troop movements on Sumatra. If Sabang has attracted all of the attention it has, this may attract more. Palembang is vital to the Empire. We're going virtually all-in, and I think he will too. What that means I don't know yet, but it's certainly going to shake things up. Possibly the KB will reform and the fighters that have been landed will rejoin it. We have to be quick and we need the AA to land soon!!!

First, they are hitting Johore Baru to close the fields, put damage on the units about to move in and take some supply. [:)]
They will shift to hitting troops at Singers, but for the meantime, the 4Es are also here and bombing those troops to keep disruption and fatigue going and also take a few squads into disabled as others are repaired.

The Japanese invade Alexandrvsk!! This is slightly unexpected and definitely dangerous. I'd seen a lot of ships the past turn piling into the straits between Sakhalin and the mainland, but assumed they were either retreating from Toyohara still or getting a bombardment ready for one of the bases.
As it turns out the mini-KB is here with an invasion fleet and a few SCTFs. I'd placed a few Soviet DDs at Alexandrovsk to protect the base and removed the MIGs out of bombardment range, but LR CAPed.
As the IJN arrived the Soviets first engaged a 3 ship ASW TF of good Es, sinking to of them. These are gold in the early war, so this was a good starting action.
After that a CL led TF entered the area, and the Soviet DDs mauled the Tachikaze and put a few hits on two other DDs before retiring. The 130mm CD guns then got into the action, hitting BB Ise and a big xAK.
The Soviet DDs then engaged the mini-KB in a knife fight at close range and put some decent damage onto CVL Hosho, but lost the old Voikov to a long lance. All in all a great first showing and that should put some fear into the IJN about bringing important CV Bfs into this narrow territory, at least while the Soviet Navy is intact. It'll be a while before the USN can get ships over to support, so these DDs are it for now. The Soviet subs have done nothing against the combat ships here. They're all quite slow, which probably means they're better suited to merchant raiding.

Subs dropped about 90 mines in a shallow open water hex next to Singers the 24th. The next day a big SCTF went right through with two BBs and a gaggle of DDs. The DD spontaneously cleaned up 13 of the mines. Grrrrrrrrr! [:@]

Subs dropped about 90 mines in a shallow open water hex next to Singers the 24th. The next day a big SCTF went right through with two BBs and a gaggle of DDs. The DD spontaneously cleaned up 13 of the mines. Grrrrrrrrr! [:@]

At Vladivostok Oscars wreak havoc on the old beat up Soviet biplanes and open cockpit fighters. Even a low CAP won't do the trick. The Oscar is almost as manoeuvrable as them anyway, so it probably will never work. I'll change things up.
Luckily no bombers follow. I'll set them higher and might bring the MiGs back, plus send more AA back here.

Looks like he didn't bring enough for Alexandrovsk. I'd been sending the Sakhalinskaya Rifle Bde from Okha for weeks since the main LCUs moved out to Shikuka, and just sent the para unit in too. I'd been feeling nervous about this kind of thing, but thought he'd try it on the mainland. Luckily for me this I can cover, and the division will be back in full force after a few more days. With forts 5 the place is definitely secure, and this looks like another Japanese infantry unit that might suffer.
Shikuka could be in trouble though. I have a distraction ready, but need some time to get US troops over. I finally got the command change to work (not sure why it took a few days, but maybe there is a threshold for unit size to do it?). Can send planes here too once the runway gets fixed. Nice spot for a few 4Es, eh? [8D]
That makes me think he'll go all out to wreck it and counter invade.

This is what P-38E pilots look like after two months in combat in late 41-42. These guys were switched out of the AVG and almost all kills were made int eh 21st PS in the P-38s. Boyington is the first to crack 90 EXP, but G.S. Welch leads all with 14 kills. A few very good 10+ kill pilots have been KIA, but not too many. Pilot safety is high in these planes flying mostly over our territory or nearby.
There are only 17 P-38s left to keep us going until May when they go into a limited production. I'll save them right now for the Palembang operation. They'll be sweeping with Hurri IIb from Singers while both P-39D, P-40E and some other Dutch planes will be escorting and LR CAPing from Benkolen and Merak.
If we lose them suddenly Singapore becomes vulnerable. The Hurris and USAAF groups can keep up a decent defence, but the Lightnings are the reason this game changed to first force the IJN to bombard the base with BBs, thus putting a good 3-4 in the yards for a month or two from mines, killed off 5-10 DDs, and then also kept the forts going up since there was never any sustained bombing of the base. If they can get to level 5 it's going to be good for the defence. Just at 4.53 now.

He doesn't seem to have the fighters available to keep an extended CAP up here int he face of AVG and RAF sweeps. The B-26 is very effective, and the 4E are now adding in as our sweeps weaken from the newly level 5 Calcutta. So hopefully we can really put the hurt on here and bring Magwe oil right offline.
The IJA is sitting in Lashio with two divisions healing up disabled squads while we air transport some small Chinese units and the Burma division in from Myitkyina. Lashio is great terrain, and if the next attack holds decisively, then this could be a long battle.

The tanks destroyers of the desert get jumped by the Tainan group today for about 10 lost RAF bombers. Aha! They're in range now that The IJA took Yenan. Didn't consider that when the milk runs were left going. I'll have to stop and let these tanks finally escape, gutting and demoralised. [:)]

Singers seems likely to live or die primarily on supplies. How much do you have there, and what are your prospects for getting in more? How are the replacements for the reinforcing LCUs in that base?
This is true. I've been flexible about use so far, but of course when troops move in the HI shuts down so less is available. It's around 18k now. It's going down more quickly though with combat in the hex, so I do have hopes of getting more in. I've never managed to do this, but I have a few new tools.
One, the CM Abdiel, does 38 knots and holds 550 cargo. So that could be every other turn from a nearby base, but I have to switch the ship around to the Java area to start. Unless it connects with anything in the night he might never actually know it's making those runs from Batavia.
Secondly, I have about 30 xAK filled and steaming off of Sumatra waiting to see if the IJN will bugger off or if any more arrive from the South China Sea. If there is a moment of calm, I'll try to sail some near Sumatra and through. This of course would work much better if Palembang airfields are suppressed, so that will be the primary goal in the near future.
