Good to be back, Rob! [:)]

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

The amount of enemy units at Moulmein was 35. These troops have now retreated towards Tavoy. I have ordered some of my armour and infantry units to follow these enemy units.

Next turn will also see various bases targeted in Burma. Mainly Tavoy but Victoria Point will be bombed too.

More fresh units are making their way from Rangoon towards Tavoy. It will take some time though before these troops arrive.

Game date is 14th of September 1944

India & Burma

RAF bombing campaign in Burma has continued.

Day Air attack on Victoria Point , at 25,39

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft
Thunderbolt II x 5
B-24J Liberator x 44

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 4 destroyed

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 22

The idea behind this target is to supress the airfield here. Thus making it impossible to supply Tavoy further up in north.

Main target was Tavoy and remains until further notice.

Day Air attack on Tavoy , at 28,37

Allied aircraft
Thunderbolt II x 20
Mosquito FB.VI x 13
B-29 Superfortress x 358

Allied aircraft losses
B-29 Superfortress: 5 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
101 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

Airbase hits 31
Airbase supply hits 15
Runway hits 580

That pretty much flattened the airfield there and burned a lot of supplies. [;)] I intend to keep these bombings ongoing since those 34 units that retreated from Moulmein are heading towards Tavoy. I don't want them to have chance to get supplies and build up in strenght.

An smaller raid was launched againts Rahaeng. The idea with these is also keep burning up FDR's supplies.

Day Air attack on Rahaeng , at 31,35

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 2

Allied aircraft
Spitfire VIII x 28
Beaufighter VIF x 4
Beaufighter VIC x 7
Beaufighter Mk 21 x 56

No Japanese losses

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
3 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Runway hits 18

Royal Navy also joined up into action. The night bombardments at Tavoy created good results.

Naval bombardment of Tavoy, at 28,37

Allied Ships
CL Kenya
CL Ceylon
CL Dauntless
CL Enterprise
CA Exeter
CA Cumberland
BB Revenge
BB Howe

Japanese ground losses:
1356 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 29
Port hits 6
Port fuel hits 9
Port supply hits 10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval bombardment of Tavoy, at 28,37

Allied Ships
CL Danae
CL Emerald
CA Frobisher
CA Sussex
BC Renown
BB Ramilles
BB Royal Sovereign
BB Queen Elizabeth

Japanese ground losses:
1821 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 25
Port hits 3
Port fuel hits 1
Port supply hits 7

B25J's also bombed enemy troops that retreated from Moulmein.

As you can see Burma in the current major operational area but rest assure things are building up elsewhere too.

On an intel note: Remains of KB have left Saigon and seem to be heading towards Singapore. What is FDR up to?

China

[>:][>:][>:][>:][>:]

Central & North Pacific

Repairs continue in docks at Pearl Harbour. It was radioed that 4 more US CV's are making their way towards CenPac to link up with the rest of the fleet.

Australia, NZ & South Pacific

Troops are now resting and transferring to better jump off points.

I have ordered big air raid next turn againts Ponape. This small base would give me an frontbase close enough to Truk so I could isolate it with LBA's. Also it would squeeze up enemy breathing space at Guadacanal.

A lot of supplies are on it's way to Noumea. (I can't not express enough how important it is to have a lot of supplies/fuel near frontlines. Allied offensives will eat a lot of them)

The invasion force is heading towards Ponape base. Intel reports that there are just 4000 enemy troops stationed in this atoll. This operation should lead to swift capture of the base.

More supplies are heading towards Noumea. This is one of staging points when the push through Solomons will be launched.

India & Burma

A bulk of the Japanese infantry forces at Tavoy have abandoned that base. At least 25 units are making their way South towards Malaya Peninsula.

I do not know whether FDR has some huge rescue operation waiting in the wings. I'am tempted to land forces at Victoria Point and thus cutting the retreat but I do not know whether I have adequate forces and ships available. I'am looking into this possibility.

Meanwhile RAF continued their efforts in Burma. One of the targets were Bangkok.

Day Air attack on Bangkok , at 29,40

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 47
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 5

Allied aircraft

Japanese ground losses:

Next turn a massive airstrike is ordered againts Bangkok. This operational airfield needs to be closed down.

Central & North Pacific

[>:][>:][>:][>:][>:]

China

A minor air to air fights over Ichang and Canton. This time around Japanese pilots faired very well againts Mosquitos and Thunderbolts.

Australia, NZ & South Pacific

The build up at Noumea continues. I think the first landing site will be Lunga. Some 6 enemy units present there.

Ponape was heavily bombed by the US Airforce.

Day Air attack on Ponope Base Force, at 71,79

Allied aircraft
PB4Y Liberator x 10
B-24J Liberator x 224

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:

Next turn some B25J's will join up the action. These planes will fly off from Kwaleijin which is finally operational.

The invasion itself is few days away. Some 40 000 allied troops are involved in this operation.

Kendari was also bombed. However the casualties were too high so I decieded to rest my pilots next turn.

Here is an summary of aircraft lost from last turn....

Japanese ground losses:

Airbase hits 40
Airbase supply hits 11
Runway hits 221

Meanwhile Tavoy was heavily bombed. Next turn a large sweep is also ordered againts Hanoi. This operation involved Chinese and British airforces.

Central & North Pacific

FDR spotted my CV fleet near Wake Island. Well, that is the target since he has large amount planes stationed there. So, next turn we will see large raid unless FDR deciedes to pull back his fighters/bombers, which I doubt.

I have also gathered quite an number of LBA bombers to Midway. These planes will strike againts Wake once the CV fleet has softened up the resistance. (It will be a mess for the Japanese and that is the way I like it.)

China

[>:][>:][>:][>:]

Australia, NZ & South Pacific

The invasion of Ponape will begin next turn. Allied invasion fleet is just 120 miles away currently.

Lunga will be hit too next turn by the allied airforce. I have now proper fighter escort cover for these bombings.

Otherwise preparations are ongoing for further advances in this region.

Allied troops continue their march towards Tavoy.

Allied assault odds: 42 to 1

Japanese ground losses:

It is now clear that Japanese troops are retreating in all sectors here in Burma.

Rahaeng was also captured by the Chinese SEAC forces. This base was abandoned by the enemy.

Next turn an airstrike is ordered again and it will be joined by the Allied CV pilots. The Wake Island should be shutdown for good.

These battles have become very costly for the Japanese pilot pools.

Australia, NZ & South Pacific

Ponape base surrendered easily as expected.

Ground combat at Ponape

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 18512 troops, 108 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 526

A lot of supplies are brought into this area. This needs to be done in order to maintain the offensive.

Allied invasion fleet will soon start loading at Noumea.

Also supporting troops are moving into Ponape. This base will soon be fully operational and thus supress Truk and surrounding enemy bases.

This basically means that FDR needs another evacuation point for his battered Burma army. [;)]

This operation has consumed massive amount of supplies and fuel. There is constant supply convoys moving in and out of Rangoon.

China

[>:][>:][>:][>:][>:]

Central & North Pacific

The LBA hammering of Wake Island has continued.

Day Air attack on Wake Island , at 82,63

Airbase hits 4
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 133

FDR's aircraft both in Wake and Marcus Island has now been neutralized.

Australia, NZ & South Pacific

The invasion of Eniwetok and Lunga are about to begin. Some 60 000 men will hit shores at Lunga and hopefully can conquer the base. Intel reports 26 000 Japanese garrisoning the base.

In meantime Lunga was yet again heavily bombed.

Day Air attack on Lunga , at 67,97

Allied aircraft
P-38J Lightning x 50
PB4Y Liberator x 91

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:

FDR should be running low on supplies at Lunga. I doubt he has been able resupply that base for longtime.

Allied CV armada is heading back Pearl Harbour.

Quite a few of allied BB's are repairing and upgrading at Pearl as we speak.

Australia, NZ & South Pacific

Allied invasion fleet has left Noumea and are making good progress.

An first airstrike is scheduled againts Truk next turn. Intresting to an estimate what kind of troop strenghts FDR has garrisoning there.

It is now confirmed that Japanese navy is present at Kendari. At least BB Fuso was confirmed to on the docks. What is FDR up to? My guess would be an navalstrike targeting Timor.

It seems that this TF was heading towards Aleutians. Was on an mission or what... that I do not know.

Australia, NZ & South Pacific

There was not any Japanese resistance at Truk

Japanese ground losses:

The bad news is that intel indicates 55 000 Japanese troops present. It is not impossible to conquer the base but is it worth it??? I need to think this through.

Invasion fleet is nearing Lunga so keep the fingers crossed.

At Kendari there seems to be 5 Japanese BB's and at least CV Shinano present. What is their objective I do not know. Unfortunately I don't adequate airforce power available to make FDR pay for this.

On a sidenote we have already agreed on an rematch once this is over. We will be using FDR's mod! [:)] ...but this PBEM has still some way to go before the end curtain falls.

Yeah, finally into Tavoy... and the lossess have been horrible for both sides. (I will post a screenshot from Burma ín a next update)

Btw, how is the new home? ...and everything else ok Rob ? [:)]

Thanks... I don't even remember when this one started but it was definately in 2005. (Pretty much the first ever game I played with Witp... I didn't bother too much with the AI)

Hmpf... 11 months to go? I thought the game will end in 1946? [&:]

won;t end with an allied victory after aug 45 iirc. best you get is a draw , unless you nuke Japan too heavily [:D]

House is finally sorted out, taken weeks to get phone/internet/TV and sort out the old bills and not pay the unpaid bills from my predessor (found out he died in bed last july in my bedroom .. eek .. just as well i don't believe in ghosts [;)]).. PS Its a new bed [;)]

Funnily enough my longest game vs Joe was my 1st too, been an uphill struggle from mid 42 once the CV's died horribly so I can sympathise with you ..

That is good to hear that things are looking up! [:)] ...as for the predecessor... no comments! [:D]

Things are good hear too. The 2nd baby will "arrive" in late May/early June. The only bad news is that we have to give our dog away. [:(] "He" just is not getting along with the little one who nowdays runs and yet has no brains for anykind of dangers! [8|]

I doubt I'am even close enough to target Home Islands with nukes yet but I will do my best ofcourse.

Yeah, I actually have thought that had this game ended I propably would have lost intrest in Witp alltogether. [:)]

Here is the next turn...

RAF has continued to bomb Bangkok. The idea is to consume as much of enemy supply levels as possible.

I'am moving transport shipping to Burma. The current Idea is to open 2nd beach head at Victoria point. That should give FDR something more to think.

Central & North Pacific

It seems that CV Zuikaku was on its way towards Aleutians since part of the IJN CV "fleet" turned up near Dutch Harbour.

I don't have adequate amount of troops in this region nor modern aircraft. So, FDR might have an field day here but the good thing is that there is not much to bomb around Aleutians.

Some fresh squadrons are now moved into frontline action. Intresting to see whether FDR will keep pushing me here.

Eniwetok was captured as expected. Now I'am moving some supporting troops there in order to build up the base.

On an general note my Submarines have been active around Japan. So, I'am pleased with their results but also casualty rate is big due to FDR's excellents ASW efforts.

Now I'am just moving the British submarines into their designated areas.
