India

A special update as we prepare for major operations against Karachi and Malir!
The Southern Area Army is composed of the 25th and 14th Armies.

One division is at sea:
4th Div at sea, heading for the Indian Ocean. 28 pp for Karachi

The rest are spread out between Ahmadabad and Rawalpindi:
2nd Div 32 pp for Karachi
5th Div 100 pp for Karachi
16th Div 34 pp for Malir
18th Div 100 pp for Karachi
21st Div 26 pp for Malir
33rd Div 33 pp for Malir
34th Div 34 pp for Karachi
38th Div 100 pp for Karachi
48th Div 28 pp for Malir
55th Div (is split up around Ahmadabad)
56th Div (is split up around Lahore, 100 pp for Karachi)
Imperial Guards Div 0 pp for Malir

There are 11 engineer regiments, 6 tank regiments, 8 arty units and 3 AA regiments attached to the Army Group.

A mighty fleet sailed from Singapore today. We already have 4 replenishment fleets well on their way to the Indian Ocean.
I might run a little low if the battle drags out, but there are fuel reserves in Panaji, Bombay and Trimcomallee.

The plan is to run 3 fast surface groups into Karachi first to destroy the RN and then let 2 battleship groups bombard.
I will try to move in as many Zeros as possible, and if air supremacy can be won without paying a too high price we will move in 150 Army bombers.

PzB, your reports really scare me ....how many fighters are you losing? But above all...how many experienced pilots are you losing? It seems to me that Japan cannot handle these aerial losses in 42 if he wants to be ready for the next years of massacres....well, i know that if you do not push forward now there won't be any auto victory, but again....i'm concerned

And what about Rabaul? How many planes are defending it? How do u plan to keep Rabaul alive and to save your southern perimeter from been transformed into dust by enemy LBbombers?

i honestly never understand why people are so worried to save pilots in 42 for "next years".

I mean, once the japanese offensives stops in '42, Japan has all the time to train the unexperienced crew in top. you just need some training in china or on empty bases.

I understand that in '43 when you will be constantly under pressure. But in '42?? in 3-4 months you can get your crews to good exp.

Don't worry guys - I got most of my Zero Daitais up and running! There are a quite a few ones on training in China - the rest are spread out between
DEI and India. A little meager in Rabaul for the time being but I got 4 supporting bases around it from which I can provide LRCAP if needed.
(One 17 ac 75 exp Daitai is on 80% CAP for the moment)

Going to send Tonys and Tojos to the Central Pacific in a few weeks. The upgraded and highly experienced Daitais are undergoing conversion training right now.

Not sure whether the Tony is such a good choice for operations in the pacific. It lacks range and range is what you need when you want to conduct escort or LRCAP missions. I am actually not even sure whether it can jump from Truk to Kwajlein (sp?) in a single jump. New Guinea/Rabaul yes, but not further east with the Tony, I would suggest.

You're right about that WhoCares! In Hoepners game they're using a mod, and the Tony got longer legs. In the original scen 15, it got a max range of 3 [:'(]
So Tojo's will be sent to the Marshalls and the Solomons together with Zeros while Tonys can be kept in the DEI and NG.

I'm not as worried about pilot losses as I was before. My training programs in China can train a Daitai from 30-50 exp in 14 days.
These semi-trained units will be sent into the most 'hostile' areas to take part in battle of attrition. The more highly trained units will be used to defend key
bases and bolster the defenses elsewhere.

Attrition makes it impossible to maintain only highly trained units, so a compromise is necessary.

are you quite sure of that? I don't recall using any mods and my tonies are range 6

Yes, I checked it yesterday! Normal range is 2 and max range is 3.
That's why I'm producing more Tojos than Tonys.

Situation Report

The Fleet is moving 4 hexes each day, it will take ca 15 days to get into position outside of Karachi.
This is the time available for the Army to make their final preparations and get into position. I will most likely
move 5 divisions into Malir and a lot of engineers and then start bombarding within 14 days or so.

Since we had a discussion about fighters losses earlier we can elaborate a bit:
Today a Zero Daitai that had been training in Burma for 14 days was decimated in heavy fighting in India.
It was a low exp formation with 26 ac and 26 pilots. After the battle it had only a few ac left but 10 60 exp pilots
remained. The unit moved to Dehli and 20 replacement Zeros were immediately flown in from Singapore. Over
the next 20 days the unit will be re-trained and sent back to India (see picture). This is the kinda of 'meat chopping'
operations I was referring to. Loosing them isn't nice, but hardly devastating.

Something has to be done, and from my point of view the most important objective is to save the troops.
So the convoy has been split into several groups, each transport got 2 escorts. There is also a tf with 4
small escort destroyers that will act as a surface combat group. All the ships will move at hight speed to
Koepang and is ordered to unload and disband.

That was damage control, secondly we have to turn the situation around and make it favorable!
70 Zeros have been placed on CAP over Koepang - the enemy will now have to pay to inflict further damage.
Several Betty groups have also been put on naval attack in Bali, Balikpapan, Koepang and Kendari. Most of the bases
also have Zero fighters.

If we're lucky we can hit back on the enemy, not too many operational Allied capital ships left [;)]

There is a lot of activity around, but there's not much I can do - and I don't think anything serious is about to happen.
If the US cv's are still off Timor, this is were I should be on my toes.
In the South Pacific we got well defended bases that can take care of themselves.

We're currently fighting a 3 front war: India, DEI and South Pacific. In 2 months there should only be 1 left, that's the plan anyway.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/18/42

Heavy air battles today as Allied mediums and heavies attack numerous targets all over the Pacific. Strangely the enemy carriers have retreated
and my convoy reaches Koepang and is currently unloading its cargo!

I'm in no doubt that David will bomb, bomb and bomb all and everything within range for 4 straight years to come now [8|]
Every single operational ac is sent to the attack. I will have to choose my own battleground and strike when the opportunity is favorable.

My Tojos and Tonys are getting ready so incredible slow. Only a couple of ac are made ready each day.
Mostly waiting for my feet to reach Karachi: it has just cleared the top of Sumatra now and is heading into the Indian Ocean.

Will consider sending a cve and some destroyers to Truk to show the flag and perhaps feint a few attacks.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/19/42

Well, the entire convoy unloaded at Koepang. A few ships have been hit, but none have been sunk. Now we're going home and the Zeros are going with the.
Some damaged ac are left on the ground for Davids bombers. I wouldn't have liked to have garrison duty on Timor, but at least the place is defended and that was a must.
B-17's at Timor could have caused a lot of problems for me.

Subs and a cve tf has been dispatched to Truk. Patrol and mining operations will be ordered.
In India I've ordered the Army to move towards Ahmadabad. In a week the final battle will commence. I want to be well in place by the time the fleet arrives.
David will have so many targets to bomb that it should be easier to base ac within range of the cursed heavy bombers. Lahore is almost a size 4 af now.

We're going to do it simple: Overwhelming force against Malir and then land troops in Karachi. If my amph. div isn't defeated, the Allied troops will not have
anywhere to retreat to and Karachi should fall quickly.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/20/42

More of the same, getting a little tired of rebuilding gutted Zero Daitais. It's such a pain that 1 damaged ac can hold 16 pilots back.
Makes my life much more miserable. Mostly trying to keep thing quiet - in China I'm preparing to upgrade another Nate unit into Tonys.
The so called 'Oscar II' unit that was supposed to arrive actually arrived as Nates [:@] Does anyone know if I'm going to be allowed to
upgrade my Army ac into whatever army model I wish when v1.5 is released?

The Combined Fleet is now 10 days out of Karachi - it has joined up with the amphibious landing group. This group will use an additional
10 days to get there. Should have been able to pacify the place by then...I hope! Score is now 31800 vs 8700 if I'm not mistaken.
In order to achieve an autovictory I will probably have to capture all of enemy divisions on Java before the end of the year. Will initiate this
operation as soon as India falls. Operation 'Mothball'.. After that it's Colombo and Mandalay before going onto the defensive.

Here's a 3 day update - not a lot of interesting stuff going on, so I'll just provide a quick resume!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/21/42

The usual bombing of bases in India, Timor and in the South Pacific.
A garrison unit was moved into Jaluit and Allied mediums from Tarawa hit the convoy.
The attack took place in the afternoon and 95% of the troops were already ashore.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Jaluit at 81,84

Allied aircraft
B-25C Mitchell x 30

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
PG Eiko Maru, Bomb hits 5, on fire, heavy damage
AP Tempei Maru, Bomb hits 12, on fire, heavy damage *sinks*
AG AG-358, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage *sinks*

Japanese ground losses:
59 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
All B-25C Mitchell bombing at 6000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Above Lahore we eliminate a large UK aviation unit and bags another 7000 enemy troops.
This concludes the mopping up operations in the area and all of the troops are now heading
towards Ahmadabad and Malir. The 'stragglers' out in the rought terrain will need a few weeks
to get there, but that's ok. I'm planning to throw them into the battle as fresh reserves.

Ground combat at 28,5

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 31809 troops, 297 guns, 152 vehicles

Defending force 5190 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 161 to 1

Allied ground losses:
6973 casualties reported
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/22/42

Not much to report at all - except from the usual air raids. I shoot down 7-8
enemy ac over Java and Bombay, Koepang, Buna and Shortland receives a pounding.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/23/42

David is a busy bee and moves a fast transport unit into Lautern (eastern Timor)
I don't want him to expand the size 2 af on this base, so countermeasures are being taken.

I've moved quite a few Betty units back to the South Pacific. A batch from Kwajalein took
of and hit enemy transports of Nauru. My naval bombers that were pretty badly mauled
when the enemy invaded Java have now been rested and trained and I got quite a few
good units available.

The first 36 ac Tojo Daitai has moved to the Phillippines and it will continue on to
Kwajalein in order to provide high altitiude CAP against possible B-17 attacks. Another
unit will be moved to Rabaul in a few days.

In response to enemy aggression around Timor, additional units are being moved to Ambonia
and other bases in the area. I'm planning to move in some new Tony fighters.

I ordered 2 divisions to attack the enemy blocking unit outside of Malir. This was just sufficient to
force a Chindit Bde to retreat. The road is now open and troops are streaming into the suburbs
of Karachi. The initial wave will consist of 8 divisions and many engineer units. The fleet is slowly
moving into position and will first intervene on an appropriate moment.

Another 6 construction units have been transferred from the Kwantung Aera Army and are
being shipped out to build more airfields and forts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1085 troops unloading over beach at Lautem, 33,78

Allied ground losses:
161 casualties reported
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Nauru Island at 79,91

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 13

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
AK Kaiping, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage *sinks*
MSW Rail

Aircraft Attacking:
All G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 22,5

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 66452 troops, 596 guns, 5 vehicles

Defending force 4488 troops, 27 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
246 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

Allied ground losses:
282 casualties reported
Guns lost 6

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you may have noticed there is a lot of enemy saber rassling. I seriously doubt that it is possible for the enemy
to launch strong assaults - especially since so many troops are in Java and so many ships are resting at the bottom
of the Java Sea [;)] I will do my best to provide a strong perimeter defense with mobile air reserves. Fast fleet units
will also be available together with new Army fighter units.

It's pretty clear that US strength is growing stronger for each day, and it is important to keep them in bay for as long as
possible. The only thing i can't do is to efficiently oppose the massed medium and heavy bomber attacks throughout the
Pacific. Shutting down the nasties in India will be a big bonus [:'(]

Hard contact in the Indian Ocean

Post by PzB74 »

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/24/42

Interesting turn! A well timed attack on Kendari mauled 2 transport Daitais that were in the process
of ferrying in some SNLF troops to Lautern. All and everything within range of heavy bombers
is in peri.

Only 100 men reached Lautern and my fast transport will first arrive tomorrow. Guess we're going
to have a little 'quarrel' over this place. There are 10 destroyers in the area that have now been employed.

Betties from Kwajalein sortied against tf's at Tarawa (the range to Nauru and Tarawa is exactly the same, so I
had hoped that the unsupported ships around the former would be targeted again). 10 bombers were lost to
flak and CAP and one transport was hit. It was the near misses on the brand new battleship North Carolina
that made it interesting though. David would not have liked to see her torpedoed!

The Combined Fleet ran into an Allied transport convoy in the Indian Ocean...RIP! I didn't like that the position
of my ships was revealed prematurely. David knows what he got coming now! Take a look at the mighty strike
that Nagumo managed to send of - not much penalty for packing 6 cv's and 2 cvl's into a single tf here.

My recon planes in India have spotted 4 tf's at Karachi, 3 with ca's and dd's and one with apd's and dd's.
Still unsure whether I should unleash the KB at them before sending in the ships. it would undoubtdely make
their job much easier. What do you all think?

The army will enter Malir tomorrow - will start bombarding the base for a few days before commencing the
assaults.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/25/42

Another eventful day...one of the wrecked enemy ships met up with one
of my assault groups [:'(] Annoying that contact with wrecked enemy ships are immediately
reported in detail to the enemy. This is were I miss a little fog of war. Even with a radio the
poor thing would never have known what hit it!

Unloaded a naval garrison unit at Lautern today as well, it will be followed suit by another one
in a day or two.

Air attacks in India continues, but no attacks on my combat troops yet. Kendari was hit again
and another batch of ac destroyed on the ground. It's really not usable as a forward base - as I
learned from the early attacks by Wobbly months ago. I've included all the air operations in
China, Burma and in the South Pacific today to let you see the true extent of it all.

We have now entered Malir and an immediate deliberate attack has been ordered to probe
enemy defenses. I got 130k men there already and my recon estimates ca 30k enemy troops.
There may be a lot more, but let's take a look and see. If we can reduce Malir quickly, it would
make the fleets job much easier. Allied ac would also be overstacked on the remaining fields in
Karachi - imagine the damage a heavy bombardment run would cause there....

Hard Contacth in the Timor Sea

Post by PzB74 »

Here comes a couple of very interesting reports!! [8D]

Firts a sweetener: I checked the sunk ship list today, and guess what I found!
The carrier Lexington was reported sunk in Tjilitjap - the score indicates that
she was scuttled What wonderful news, another one of the most capable
US carriers have been dispatched of.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/27/42

Surface Combat

A Tokyo Express moves into Lautern with another small NLF garrison unit....and encounters 2 enemy battleships and 2 destroyers!! [X(]
The enemy capital ships scores several 14" and 16" shell hits on 2 ships, and they sink. In return we hurt the Arunta badly and succeeds in torpedoing
the Idaho. I think David wanted to bombard the base, very few escorts - not surprisingly after the beating the Allied
fleet took of Java. I have some Betties on naval attack in the vicinity, but the enemy ships were not spotted as they retreated towards Perth!?
The area has been deemed unsuitable for my own capital ships, too many enemy bombers and even carriers in the area. Will continue to send in
small destroyer units with troops. (The 4 remaining ships will unload their cargo tomorrow, I had ordered them to stay put in order to intercept potential
enemies. I think David will send in another fast transport soon, perhaps already tomorrow. So will I [;)] )

Air Combat

David promised me surprises..and here they come! He has moved B-24's from Karachi to Mandalay
and Colombo!! Fortunately not much damage was caused and I'm preparing to retribute. A few crack Zero jockeys
over Trimcomalee really put a lot of dents into the enemy bombers. The first fighter-bomber attack against
troops in Malir also took place.

to their destinations, so hopefully we'll be able to muster a better air defense in a few weeks.

The capture of Malir came quickly, seems like David is pulling into Karachi. The Combined Fleet is
only 4 days out now, so we'll stay in Malir to avoid the big guns of the RN.
