15th - 29th July 1943

The British 10th Army take Corfu to set up an advanced base for the invasion of the heel of Italy. The unit in Athens is proving...tough.

5th - 12th August 1943

The Americans (2nd Army), sailing from Tripolitania, invade the heel of Italy, while the British WDF Army, sailing from Cyrenaica, invade Calabria to stop reinforcements coming back from Sicily.

The plan was not for the British to head through the Balkans but there appears to be little in Greece or Albania to stop them at present....

19th - 26th August 1943

Okay so one more turn with the Soviets not moving - we'll then restart.

Italians are really unimpressed with Il Duce given the landings in Southern Italy and the invasion of Albania.

I am really pleased I tried this out with the Western Allies - this is good experience of what not to do. I've had no real plan, my HQ's are all over the place - as are my units - its all a bit of a mess and I think I've been saved by the fact there were few units in Greece and initially in Italy.

As can be seen, with my attack on the mainland going nowhere, I've double-backed into Sicily....[8|]

One other point of course. This would have been impossible to done if the Italians still had their fleet in being. The liberties taken with the transports and amphibs sailing alone, could not have been taken.

When
Italy falls all italy becomes Allied territory, an error I think, and in my recent game Greece switched over, as It was Italian conquest, became Allied and created an army!1 nice,

2nd - 9th September 1943

Okay so the Soviets are now back in the game... and that's not good for the Germans...

Firstly, 7th and 8th Shock Armies take Konigsberg with the 3rd Light Tank Corps liberating Danzig.

3rd Army's resistance in Jelgava ends, and this allows 54th Army and the 18th Rifle Corps to move on Ventspils and set about ending 2nd Hungarian Army's resistance at the southwestern end of the Gulf of Riga.

Having the Advanced Tank 2 upgrade certainly helps as the 1st Hungarian Army, defending Grodno, starts to find out.

German pockets of resistance remain in Kaunas, Grodno, Pinsk and Gumbinnen, but these should soon be cleared and the Soviets will be able to completely clear East Prussia and be back in northwestern Poland....

With the last German resistance being ended in Kirovgrad and Nicolayev, the Red Army appears like one unstoppable brown mass descending upon southern Poland and Romania....

I think that, discounting a couple of units, that what you see is what they have.

in my game, I suddenly found quite a powerful German defense on the Oder. Not sure if this was generated by the AI or by event but it added a bit of spice to the final battles around Berlin.

I understand that Stalin ordered Tito to attack allied troops if they entered Yugoslavia. Whether Tito would have obeyed is anyone's guess.

As mentioned previously, I am all over the place with units and HQ, but too late to worry about that now. The Allies expand the beachhead - but as per real life, they are not exactly over endowed with replacement units.

Unlike the Eastern Front, the Axis seem to have a goodly number of troops in Northern France.

The poor Canadians near Taranto are looking to be on a decidedly sticky wicket. I make the decision to not throw good money after lost causes and concentrate instead on clearing Sicily and then pushing up through Calabria. Hopefully the 'heel' can be held by the Americans - and the two prongs can converge, together, on Axis units in the 'arch' of the foot.
