Issues that unbalance the game are simple.
1. Japan must not ever be allowed to move units between restricted HQ without paying PP. Such movement is not intended and has been stated as such since before games release.
2. Japan must not be permitted to use turn 1 movement for anything other then PH strike and movement between Japanese bases. (just use the 4 hex rule and be happy)
3. Japanese pilots should be trained using the "training" mission. (The exploits are well known. while quite clever they should be avoided by any player who wants WITP work as intended. )
4. To be most accurate RD factories should be set to size 0. Players can then alter them as desired. Otherwise be happy for the free production on set dates and leave them alone.

Of course the above are guides for players trying to recreate the circumstances and realities of 1941-1946 using the intended design of WITP.

1. Agreed - and majority of players have HR to cover that issue.

2. Agreed. I recall when i read your post "4 hexes away rule" i accept it and i'm using this rule (somewhat modified)

3. A issue for debate. While i agree that combat training (attack on ground units and empty bases - i never use the latter) is overefficient this issue must not be changed/fixed without considering other aspects of A2A combat model in general.

I won't repeat myself, i posted earlier in other thread what should be done IMHO to achive balance (especially when no one reply to you - i found this habit very funny). Just in short - limiting max exp gain in ground combat training, limiting bombers training with supply missions to 59 etc...

4. don't see that as a problem. Tonys are moved one months? Who cares? I look at r&d as a spice in the game. Same with ground combat model where is obvious that dice rolls took a great role (i'm not talking about massive battles like Sneer have in Chungking, that is different matter)...

I'm playing Mogami in PBEM. Game is in August 1943. Neighter side uses "combat training". As far as I can tell, Japan still has enough pilots to defend itself. Allies have air superiority, but I cannot "crush" Japan (as I don't use combat training, there're not many Allied fighter squadrons with XP of 60+). The game is still somewhat balanced. I assume that Mogami trains his pilots by disbanding trained chutais into depleted daitais and uses them to train new pilots up afterwards (by using the training mission). And he simply does not commit his full airforce in his outer perimeter. I never understood why many (Japanese) players insist, that using "combat training" is necessary for their survival (late-war Allied planes are better - so what? - it's a game about history and not "Space Battles"!).

K

greetings,

Honestly, i do not know - perhaps you don't use 4E bombers overstacking and attacking with 100, 200, 300 heavies?

I suspect that you playing historical style with reasonable numbers of planes assigned on one target?

I think my biggest 4E bomber raid included 144 Liberators escorted by 72 Lightnings (another one accidentally included 96 Liberators escorted by 144 Lightnings). And I don't overstack for offensive missions (overstacking happens mostly when I rest airgroups before relocating them to airfields behind the frontline when they need to recover their morale but still have too much fatigue - I don't like unneccessary ops losses).

to same post
1.agreed
2.agreed with slight minor modifications
3.with this model in A2A and without any chance to influence training program - which is not corellated with economy shape and priorities I disagree - best tactics for allied with this rule banned is to go for atrition war.
4.i can agree however i find retooling factories too expensive - with cost lower i agree

Well that's the answer. I have faced raids of comparable size as early as February or March 1942 and expect to face raids triple and quadruple the size by year's end. So, as with everything else, the issues that "unbalance" the game do so only if the Allied player follows a certain, historic, behaviour.

If the Allied player deviates from this behaviour then the Japanese need to adapt and change their own behaviour. One cannot chastise the Japanese for training methods etc in the absence of the CONTEXT in which these methods are used. A Japanese player who maximised his training methods etc whilst facing an Allied player who never massed more than 1 bomber group for any given raid would definitely unbalance the game. OTOH most Japanese players are facing a few hundred four-engined bombers on any given rai and within this context their training maximisation is more reasonable.

Well, that's that settled then.

Mog,

Agree on 1,2 and 4 but point three is just [8|] to me. I had two PBEMs (as Allied) where my opponents used none training at all. Result: The game wasn´t fun, it was ridicoulos. That way I can play against AI too as there is nothing anyone can do against me from mid 43 on. Both games ended with the surrender of the Japanese. I might call myself experienced after all those turns I´ve done now (and I still learn new things) but without the Jap training every more or less experienced player should be able to crush the Japs until the end of 43 or middle of 44. In mid 44 there wouldn´t be a single Jap plane piloted by a even less trained pilot left and you just have to take 500 ships with 15CVs and 40 CVEs and sail to Japan!

So if you ban pilot training (or use the training mission - which is the same as a ban) you won´t have a:

Perhpaps I´ve chosen the wrong word with crush. As you´re now in mid 43 try to get more agressive. I have a stacking rule of AF size x 50 in every PBEM I have. It´s still enough. You have so many medium and heavy bombers and more than enough fighters that can reach out 5 hexes. If you haven´t lost all your carriers there should be around enough to support your operations in destroying the Japanese air arm. If Mog takes on the fight then you will lose far more planes in the first two months than he will. After that there aren´t trained pilots left (more or less [;)]).

If he doesn´t take on the fight then you will have enough targets in range of your bombers AND escorts that can be taken out by your already more than enough ground troops. Just imagine, if he abandons every base in a range of 5 of a size 4 airbase of you! Then you just have to take ONE base in New Guinea and New Guinea would be lost to him - which wouldn´t take a year. From New Guinea to the Philipines and so on... So at a given time he (or every other Japanese player) has to take on the fight and then he is screwed without pilot training (he will even be screwed with the pilot training - only a bit later).

Mog stated that WITP is designed to mirror the real time frame. I say that no one in a PBEM would stand against an experienced player until 8/45 if the Japanese doesn´t use the different training methods (disbanding daitais or not...).

I would bet my house, my car and my Ducati against every Japanese player that he can´t hold out the historical time frame in a PBEM against me if he doesn´t use pilot training. [:D] Even with pilot training it´s hard enough.

If WITP is intended to mirror the historical time frame then it´s damn bad designed - sorry. Don´t understand me wrong, I really love this game. But even pilots in the 70s in a Tojo, Tony or Jack have serious problems with the planes the Allied side can put into the air in late 43, early 44. Pilots in the 40s-50s in Tojos, Zekes or whatever is the same as if you would kill the on the ground.

Well, in that case you'll be glad to know that this one got resurrected. Just got the first turn of the "restart" from April 1st back yesterday...

We have negotiated all the house rules. It is still a very free game but the number of grey areas are very limited. Its either allowed or clearly disallowed ( in this game much more is allowed than disallowed but at least now it is very clear)...

On a sidenote... Saw Andrew Brown's extended map for the first time yesterday... Really wish I'd been using that all along. It looks like it would have cured this entire issue.

Yep![:D] AB rocks! But one still has to use the 1st turn move bonus with a bit of restraint for any game to even approximate reality.[;)]

Ron,

We're playing RHS which, in many ways is closer to reality than stock BUT gives the player the freedom to verge away from the way things historically happened. We have house rules precluding invasions outside of LBA range ( defined as 21 hexes from a Level 4 airfield and 11 hexes from a sub-Level 4 Airfield ( betty and Zero range respectively) or outside of carrier-based air range ( defined as 5 hexes)and I will stick by them. It is entirely possible to invade Port Moresby on Turn 1 under these House Rules and to mount very distant invasions, just not on turn 1.

I'm simply not interested in playing "recreate almost exactly what the Japanese did". We are playing a what if scenario and if I have accepted the right of the Soviets to attack me on 1st January 1943 no matter what then you'd best be assured that in order to offset that that I'm going to try to pacify the other theatres by that time. My world view is large enough to encompass your views differing from mine on this. I hope yours can encompass views different from yours on this issue.

And with that said onto the recommencement of the AAR...

The house rules are pretty much as described above in the discussion with AndyMac... Karachi is inviolable. No offensive actions can originate in or be aimed toward karachi and any British or African troops, air units and ships which arrive in karachi can be shipped elsewhere in the game. In addition two Indian Divisions can also be shipped out. To free other Indian Divisions etc Karachi must be recaptured, defined as holding an unbroken ( no hexes fully controlled by the Japanese... contested is not sufficient to break this line of communication) line of rail and paved road hexes from a Level 4 port somewhere in India to Karachi itself. British forces moving out of Karachi will have safe passage to a horizontal line level with Bali. Once there all bets are off.

Obviously with the boost these house rules will give any defence of Australia ( something on the order of 4 to 5 Division equivalents at the present time) it will prove necessary to either take Australia quickly, neutralise the ability to transfer these forces except at great expense or simply restrict its offensive potential. While I'm still deciding which of these options to pursue I will have to do everything I can to put the Allies on the back foot in other theatres. As a result the rather conservative tactics I was employing in the Pacific will be scrapped in favour of much more aggressive moves.

I have two Independent Brigades making for Amchitka. Instead they will move forward and head for the islands to the east of Amchitka. In addition the Regiment tasked for Johnson Island will detour and make for the atoll the Allies have just begun basing troops out of.

Well, well, certainly more aggressive. What looks like the full TBD complement of 5 US CVs strikes Johnston Island. Unfortunately for the Allies my Pacific CV fleet is prowling, unspotted, just 8 hexes north-eastward. Tomorrow these CVs will sprint southward into position to ambush the Allied CVs as they make their way home. If the Allies sprint more than 8 hexes next turn they will get fully away but I expect them not to sprint that much since I've been careful to stand all my Vals and Kates down ( well, actually, all my Vals and just a single Daitai of Kates... the rest of my Kates are doing duty with the Indian Invasion covering force.) and so the Allies shouldn't have any idea that my carriers are in the area. If a carrier battle comes to pass I doubt I'll be able to do any significant damage ( since, IMO, the only thing which can be relied upon to sink a ship of CA and larger size are large holese below the waterline ( the larger the better) so with a very limited torpedo-strike capability the Allied CVs should handle the Val attacks quite well. Of course, surviving is one thing, surviving without any damage and thus not being in repair yards for the next 2 months is another entirely.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/02/42

Well the main news today was that there was a rather furious carrier battle north-east of Johnston Island.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval bombardment of Palmyra, at 106,85

Allied Ships
CL Phoenix
CL St. Louis
CL Concord
CA San Francisco
CA Minneapolis
CA Astoria
CA New Orleans
CA Salt Lake City
CA Louisville
CA Chester
CA Northampton
CA Portland

Japanese ground losses:
16 casualties reported

Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 34
Port hits 12
Port fuel hits 5
Port supply hits 6

Given the results of the carrier battle this cruiser group becomes a viable target. I think I'll finish off the damaged carriers and then sprint south-east and split up into search groups ( on the assumption that rather than taking the best straight-line route to Pearl Harbour this cruiser group will be moving far east and then north once level with the easternmost Hawaiian Islands. If they sprint all the way and leave the low on fuel DDs to their fate then they will escape me. I am willing to bet, however, that the Allies won't, yet, realise the necessity to save what he can no matter the cost whenever I have a slight operational advantage.

After this I think I may mount an operation against Pearl Harbour itself with a view to catching the damaged carriers in port and lessening the Allied four-engined bomber threat to Johnston Island.

Only 3,000 mines and yet a solid 7 mine hits occurred. This is very encouraging for the future when I will be trying to put 15,000 to 20,000 strong minefields in place at the decisive points.

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 44

Allied aircraft
F4F-4 Wildcat x 89

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 24 destroyed
D3A Val: 12 destroyed, 17 damaged
B5N Kate: 5 destroyed, 15 damaged

The Wildcats downed, fully, 24 Zeroes, 9 Vals and a Kate. The other 3 Vals and 4 Kates were destroyed during their attack runs.

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-4 Wildcat: 31 destroyed, 10 damaged

Allied Ships
CV Saratoga, Bomb hits 1
CV Enterprise, Bomb hits 4, Torpedo hits 2
DD Clark, Bomb hits 2, on fire
CV Yorktown, Bomb hits 3
CV Lexington, Bomb hits 2, on fire
CV Hornet, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Most of the bomb hits were on the armour belts or only did very minor damage even if they did penetrate the flight deck. All in all every Allied carrier took some damage but the only one which might have been incapable of further flight operations was Enterprise and, even in that case, it might have been able to continue flight ops.

Only 1 SBD got through and it, again, missed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 105,72

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 31
D3A Val x 40
B5N Kate x 6

Allied aircraft
F4F-4 Wildcat x 36

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 6 destroyed, 1 damaged
D3A Val: 7 destroyed, 15 damaged
B5N Kate: 3 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-4 Wildcat: 17 destroyed, 2 damaged

Allied Ships
CV Enterprise, Torpedo hits 1
CV Yorktown, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
CV Lexington, on fire
CV Saratoga, Bomb hits 6, on fire

I counted up the serious hits ( as opposed to those which hit armour belts or destroyed weapons but did no further damage) and came up with the following:
Saratoga: 5 x seriously damaging flight deck penetrations.
Enterprise: 3 x Torpedoes.
Lexington: 2 x serious flight deck penetrations.
Hornet: 1 x torpedo.
Yorktown: 3 x serious flight deck penetrations.

So, overall, it looks like Saratoga and Enterprise are probably sufficiently damaged to prevent flight operations ( and curb their escape) while the other 3 are probably still capable of flight ops and speedy ( more than 20 knot) escape. The question now becomes exactly how much LBA am I willing to risk in order to finish off Saratago and Enterprise?

Allied forces CAPTURE Palmyra base !!!

Very, very aggressive. It looks like the Allies are attacking anywhere and everywhere they have even the slightest possibility of success. So be it. I've shored up most of these areas well enough to withstand such counter-attacks.

After thinking it over I think I will close on Pearl in order to try to kill the carriers. I will also fly a couple of Betty Daitai into Johnston in order to bolster my torpedo-attack capability. Initially I will to 8 hexes from Pearl ( outside of even twin-engined bomber range). If that is insufficient then I will move to 5 hexes from Pearl ( outside of SBD and Wildcat range). The Allies have suffered an unfortunate setback but will recover their material losses quickly. Aggressively moving in on Pearl and threatening even greater loss will, IMO, create an important and long-lasting mental impression.

Against the Japanese CAP the elite American Nay pilots score 4 Zeros shot down against a loss of 38 F4F's and 128 SBD's? (granted flak losses are mixed up in there...but still)

This is the reason that I will never play a stock scenario again.[8|]

Oh, and to avoid being called a fanboy, the kamikaze test that someone did a while back that resulted in 3000 Japanese losses for negligable damage is just as bad.

While I agree that uebercap is a problem I also feel constrained to point out that if you look at the only properly escorted Dauntless strike launched ( the 28 Wildcats escorting 65 Dauntlesses) a total of 28 Dauntless got through, representing 41% of the SBDs...

I would suggest that there is a very clear distinction between properly escorted strike packages and unescorted strike packages. Properly escorted packages can get through in very good order while improperly escorted or unescorted strikes get annihilated. This is as it should be and skews the results. If you look at what happens to properly escorted strikes the results, while still questionable, are much more reasonable than the overall numbers would suggest.

The problem in the late war lies in the fact that it is almost impossible for the Japanese to escort any strike with a suitable number and quality of fighters ( and fighter pilots) given the number and quality of American CAP fighters/pilots. If, at any stage of the war, a strike can be escorted by fighters of equal quality and, at least, half of the numbers of the opposing CAP then that strike should normally get through in relatively good order. This is as true in 1941 as it is in 1945.

E.g. I reject that it is impossible for the Allied CV fleet to stand up to the Japanese CV fleet in December 1941 with proper tactical and operational handling and appropriate shaping of the battlefield at the strategic level. In the same way I don't accept that a 1944 matchup between KB and Allied CVs is as impossible as most seem to believe. One needs to exercise a bit of strategic shaping and a good deal of operational art instead of just relying on sheer mass and overmatching of the enemy but it can be done. Of course applying the appropriate strategic shaping and operational art is difficult.

Your opponent really made a huge mistake by committing his US CV Fleet. It is way too early to go into offensive mode unless the situation demands it!

YAY ,, happy to have this carry on there Nemo ..

BUT all US CV's in one TF ??? no wonder the attacks were uncoordinated, i'm sort of suprised any launched at all to be honest .. way way way over stacked .. and paid the price too.

At least your opponent was honest enough not to go back and re-read the end march stuff in your AAR else he'd be no-where near there with the US CV's [;)]
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

Well, to be fair, I think it is never too early to take offensive action if the proper strategic and operational "shaping" can occur. As to the over-stacking, he didn't do too badly. He has about 450 planes on the 5 carriers. About 90 are Devastators so that leaves 360 to fly and fight. Of those he lost about 230 in the fighting with another 50 or so being committed but surviving. So, at maximum, only 80 planes which had the potential to be committed failed to fly and some of that 80 were probably still repairing damage or missing as a result of operations at Palmyra and Johnston Island.

Still, I don't think that Johnston was the proper place to pick this fight.

It looks like there was an attempt to sneak some Allied troops out of Dacca. It also looks like this attempt failed in the face of the 9 Nells I had left behind at Trimcomalee.

So, in the end Saratoga and Yorktown have been sunk at no cost, except in planes and pilots and I have sufficient reserves in these areas to pay the toll for this victory. So these ships should come back at the end of August 1943, just in time for any really serious Allied offensive.
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.

Can you believe that when I stated there was a uber CAP issue since UV when WITP was still in Beta I was told I was imagining things?[8|][:D]
