Top Secret plans for the Riga area: ( if you're my soviet opponent and have seen this picture....well, you've already seen too much and must immediately forfet the game. HA. ) Just pretend you didn't see it.

The red crosshatched areas are those places that have hexes that belong to the Soviets so far and need to be converted to AXis control. This is because they may have Soviet units in them still, and because when the partisans appear on the map they will be invisible to the Axis player unless they appear in an Axis hex.

So I intend for the security forces ( green ovals ) to roam around up there and convert all those hexes to local control.

At least one division is going to become too tired to continue moving forward after the fighting at Riga, so I'm thinking of leaving IT, whichever one it is, behind at Riga to mop up any Soviet units the security guys find and need help destroying.

As for the capture of Riga: instead of just hey diddle diddle right up the middle, charging into the face of his arty etc. I thought I'd get some panzer divisions across the river, somehow, and attack Riga from all sides simultaneously, or maybe attack his arty first to subdue it and then try an all out assault.

I haven't decided where would be the best place to do an over the riverbank crossing yet but I'd rather come across somewhere where the Soviet dudes aren't in force. I'd rather attack them from solid soil as it were. Then fan out to the north and south to capture some of the crossing points so that the infantry can then cross and help out.

Then after Riga is subdued we can rush off toward Leningrad.

As for the area southeast of Riga: My Soviet opponent has obviously decided to defend "forward" and has moved multiple units up to the riverline to keep me on the western side. I need to cross the river somewhere where he doesn't have any units yet, that has good terrain ( no flooded marshes) to get my tanks and motorized units back on the road(s) quickly and instead of each river crossing having to fight it's way across I thought I'd take the time to have the first successful crossing help the other points. It'll take time to do this I know, but I'm thinking it'll save manpower and equipment in the long run.

So maybe three or four turns just to get most of my guys across the river. Is that way way too long ( as I've been told )? I've heard that time is of the essense for the Axis especially in these eary turns and that you gotta push push even if deep cherry red units are all you have to push with. I'm guessing that he who says that has no compassion for the men under his command. HA.

So, I guess it's a trade off....only one turn to get one division across and three or four turns to get maybe 5 divisions across. I know what I'd rather have to fight with in Leningrad.

I'm not experienced enough in FitE to estimate how long it'll take to get to Leningrad but I'm guessing perhaps turn 12 or so to the outskirts of the river to the west of Leningrad.

If I can get enough Infantry across the river somehow, I'd rather destroy all the Soviet defenders here at the river so I won't have to fight them all the way to Leningrad ( they retreating, us pursuing ) so I'm hoping to get on the east side of them, surround them and destroy them if possible.

The advance of the front lines will come to a screeching halt if the supply needed isn't there. And supplies move best by roads and rail ( mostly by rail ).

Here's a rough draft of the plans I have for the railroads to the various near term and long term objectives. I need to stop the rr engineers repairing the "nearest" broken rail and ship them to the places where they can repair the most important broken rails first. Even if that means shipping them by rail to the place they are needed.

There are approx. thirty rr engineers and four major routes to build and so that means about 7 or 8 of them to each route. That way I might be able to keep up with the advance of the frontline somewhat better than lately.

I found the Axis has plenty of bridging units and firepower to force river crossings in multiple places against relatively weak defences - in my PBEM game I held at Riga for quite some time, but couldn't hold off the force majeur crossings to the south and eventually abandoned Riga by sea once it was surrounded.

My plans for the Minsk area: I think I have enough troops that I can build a solid line of troops across the front in this area to sorta march across the countryside headed east and sweep up any Soviet units....outflank them and surround them and destroy them.

Especially in the case of Minsk. I want to see if I can go around Minsk until it's surrounded and THEN mop it up. But I see lots of smaller battles until the Minsk thing happens.

One time I was playing FitE against Karri, one of the better players, and I was the Axis and he and I got into a situation quite like that. I had Riga surrounded and it was obvious that Riga was going to be subdued....he abandoned Riga by shipping all the units out by sea as well. I guess it's too much to hope that Menschenfresser will do the same thing.

I was hoping to get across the river without having to fire a shot in anger. My fingers are crossed.

My plans for the Pripet Marshes: I'm hoping I don't have to go in there in force. It's been my experience in the past that supply isn't good in there. And the terrain is certainly restrictive and I guess I'm hoping that the Soviet dude has too few troops to send a lot of them in there. I'm kinda hoping that once the front lines have "past" the swamp on the north and south that I can sort of seal it off and never look back. I've sent some security forces in there ( green ovals ) to make a token presence and convert some hexes but I'm hoping it's not going to become a place to fight a major battle.

I have sent an engineer or two to rebuild the bridges but that's just to give the security forces a way to get across the river, not as a major reason to send a division in there.

My plans for the southern front: I'm hoping to get the Romanians across the river somehow and have then come up behind the Soviets. Meanwhile I kinda wanted to try to force my way around the Stalin Line from the North and swing around the line to get behind it and make it look like I'm about to envelop the entire line. Maybe I'll get lucky and he'll panic and start to pull the line back to the river south of Kiev and I can pursue and destroy as many as I can catch.

It's my experience (all of 27 moves as the Sov's PBEM, and 7 as the Axis vs Elmer! :)) that the Romanians lack the firepower and mobility to accomplish the southern half of such a bold pincer....unless the Sov's have withdrawn all their forces from in front of them - they can block the crossing points of the Dneister quite easily and Romanian advances depend more on German success to teh North than they contribute.

You're correct. They are made of regular rifle squads instead of heavy rifle squads. Then again, I wasn't going to use them as the hammer, just the anvil. They are the cannon fodder I need to keep the Soviets from escaping as I chase them with the Germans.

The hard part might be getting them across the river that they might have to cross. I have already begun a program of capturing all the crossing points they might need using the panzers and I've sent an engineer or two down "there" to help out with the blown bridge problemo.

Here's a shot of the southern end of the Stalin Line ( a picture a little southeast of the shot above ) and it shows the river that the Romanians will have to somehow get across and the bridges that may or may not be blown. There are more bridges further to the south which could be used as well.

I hope this plan works because it's going to take a turn or two to make it happen. Sure hope I haven't wasted a turn or two.

My opponent probably has thought all of this through and is making preparations to thwart it even as we speak.

I sent my turn to him early this am and haven't heard back yet. He's too busy reading about my plans probably.

Menschenfresser ( the Z man ) has control of the Soviet aircraft now and they may or may not be in the positions indicated but this is my last best guess where the Soviet aircraft were at the end of turn 3. It will be interesting to see if he has flown them to other places or what he has done with them.

Here's something I put together to help me keep track of where the Pioneers and railroad engineers are so I'll know where to move them. Also, I've detailed the rough draft of where the main trunk lines of the railroad are supposed to go, which is good and which needs to be fixed yet. It's kind of a major hassle having to do this every turn but I suppose once you get organized and have a handle on where they are anyway you won't need it. It's just that this is such a BIG scenario with thousands of units and hundreds of thousands of square kilometers of terrain that keeping track of stuff you need to know might make the difference in a game won and a game lost. Anyway, it didn't hurt me to put this together.

a better way to view the above picture would be to shrink it to a more managable size perhaps:

Here's something I found interesting. The supply levels changed from turn 2 to turn 3 in the Riga area. Some of them went up and some of them went down:

Here's the change in supply levels between turn 2 and turn 3 in the Wilno area. Again, some went up and some went down. I'd be interested in knowing why high areas went down. Anyone have a theory?

Never mind. I found the answer in the Situational briefing. The supply levels went down because of the weather or something. So the good news is that the supply levels tend to go up to the max on rails and roads the longer it's been in your possession. Good to know.

Here's something interesting. The change in supply levels between turn 1 and turn 3 for those Soviet hexes that get cut off from it's source tend to decrease. Here's a sample from the area just south of Riga. Some areas go up ( as the general supply level goes up I presume ) and some went way down. Especially those areas next to Axis hexes. So I tend to believe that those hexes that get cut off eventually will decrease to zero in supply. I'll keep you updated on this theory as I find evidence to support it.

Hehe, in my game versus Okimaw it looked like he was manning the Stalin line, too. He panicked when he found that i didn't advance up in front of it, but came up with a similar plan like you, only that my northern pincer was more advanced than yours on that time iirc.
It resulted into a route, thanks to my motorized formations i was able to create a huge Kessel, but the bulk of his armour escaped across the Dniepr. The pic shows how it turned out at the end of Axis turn 6. Let's see how the Z-Man does.

It is however very costly to take out the fortress units (with the MG symbol), even when they are surrounded. I did this systematically and carefully to avoid losses, but despite that it was too costly for my taste.

For the supply: It went down because the Axis shock went down after turn 2.
