guess those Buffs are doing training runs here, then will be transferred back to Karachi and moved out with an AK to Australia. There are so few aircraft at Karachi that I´m pretty sure that most were moved to Australia. Surely nearly all British bomber squadrons are operating out of Northern Australia as can be seen due to the high number of Wellingtons and Blenheims there...
at the moment there´s nothing I can do to interdict those convoys between Karachi and (probably) Perth though...

while I have seen Cap levels of 170 to even 200 Tojos, of course today, when Miller starts another big attack, we only see 45% of our fighters in the air... nevertheless this attack is shredded (but as always we are sure that there´s another strike). The Tojos work very well against 2E bombers and when I look at the Blenheims, they die like flies when thinking about Nikmod bomber endurance. It´s good to see those Blenheim flying as this means the British bomber squadrons can´t get enough Wellingtons to fill them up. But there will also be the Liberator III soon, which means the British squadrons will get 30 Wellingtons and 30 Liberator III each month and this means more trouble soon...
10 fighters are lost on the ground for around 100 2E bombers shot down in the end... that would be an excellent result...
one of those attacks can be fent off but...

... there´s always the second attack with the undestructable 4Es that NUKE your base... once again, all I can say is please look at the 4E losses... would be great if one of the Allied bases would be clouded in somtimes, or if the bombers couldn´t find the target... well, no luck and with the low Cap levels during the first attack, there´s not much in the air when those bombers show up and now my base is destroyed, with some 70 fighters destroyed on the ground. Only one B-17 and four B-24 are shot down. So once again it takes nearly 40 B-17s damaged to see one being downed and this by my "bomber killer" as I don´t have a comparable fighter in regards of firepower like the Tojo... hurrey...
needless to say the base is closed again...

As I´ve never seen the runway damage reaching 0% I guess the airbase is 100% damaged and this will make servicing his ac problematic. RE: it goes on...
Well, I've been away a few days, and it appears many things happened.
So, congrats for the Exeter first - being sunk by a submarine when a german battleship (ok, pocket battleship[8|]) failed, what a shame.[:D]
Congrats for Miyitkina too, as well as Sian and Kweiyang, where the fighting goes your way. Excellent, you'll finally bottle up the Chinese in Chungking, if it continues that way.[&o]
And finally, congrats too for the temporary success of your Tojos against the Allied bombers. At least, you don't lose the pilots when the planes are destroyed on the ground...
And if Suva finally fell, at least it delayed the Allied advances a lot. It took a month for the base to fall, did it not ? Stucking a few divisions there, that good.[:)]
However, I'm starting to fear future bad news. All those Wildcats training over Koumac will soon convert to Corsairs... and if Miller swapped them for Army fighters, it can only mean that either their XP level is high enough that more training runs can't help, or that he has Corsairs ready. I don't know whne they become available in Nikmod, but IIRC in stock it's January '43...[:(]
Anyway, good luck and may Ares and Athena favor you.

Exeter was heavily damaged though, surely no flt but a lot of sys damage when heading towards Perth so in fact it was a slooow and fat target for the sub. Still nice to kill ships with subs, that mostly hurts more than if something gets sunk by a couple of Betties. Even with the same result seeing Betties sink ships is something you´re more or less used to in WITP, losing capital ships due to sub attacks creats "different" feelings... [:D]
Sian will fall soon, no doubt, I´m not sure I will continue any offensive afterwards. Am planning to take Chengtu though but as it looks now, Miller moved out already 2 units from Chungking and I guess they will head North. When I see Kweiyang´s units starving then this definetely means they can´t do offensive actions out of this base and my blocking force is more than sufficient and so I´ve met my goals.
It was only a small success over Koepang, the base is closed now but I expect it to be operational again within the next 7 days and then everything starts again. [:D] Miller just has to knock out this base if he wants to continue the fight on Timor and out of it afterwards. And the very good news is the fact that he stopped his attacks at Dili, I guess he fears a counteroffensive against Lautern and has accepted that he can´t take Dili with his 5 (in words: five!! [:D]) divisions.
The five divisions on the Fidjis are pretty much worn down, four of them only have 150-170 av left due to the unprepped landings on New Caledonia and Fidji, not because the fights have worn them down. [:D]
The future really looks grim. The Corsair will roll out of the factory in 2/43, so I expect to see the first USMC squadrons showing up 3/43. As it is now there is no real place where he could mass deploy them - well Lautern would be but there is at least the chance to attack the airfield with CAs or even BBs. I guess the time between 3/43 and 7/43 will the a tough one as I won´t get the Tony earlier. 9/43 is the normal arrival date but I hope to move it two months forward with extensive R&D. But the Tony is no wonder weapon, it´s totally outclassed by the Corsair in every stat. But I guess it will do better than the Tojo.

Indeed. That's why I track the score of each submarine, and not the surface combattant's.[:D]ORIGINAL: castor troy

Sub attack at 28,72
Japanese Ships
AP Unkai Maru #3, Shell hits 5, on fire

SS O16
Japanese ground losses:
53 casualties reported
Guns lost 3
O16 missed with a torp salvo but then scored with the deck gun and 40mm AA gun... AP Unkai Maru carries a small part of an AA rgt...
This is North of Maumere, O21 is also operating South of Soerabaja and was hit twice by Jakes this turn. If not FOW then I guess 2x60 kg GP bombs will have done enough damage to force the sub home... Miller told me that his fleet subs are all in their homeports waiting for their 1/43 radar upgrades as I´ve asked him where all his subs have gone. So I guess our shipping lanes are flooded with subs starting in 2/42 again...

2/3 of a night fighter sentai started training, I will use the night fighter variant of the Nik to fly daylight Cap over bases that can only be reached by Allied bombers. The Nik has a gun value of 11 which is the highest of all Japanese fighters at the moment (the next one that comes close is the Tojo with 8!!!) but 2 of the cannons are mounted as "schräge Musik" so I don´t know if those cannons even shoot at the bombers during the daylight attacks. Anyway, they are sure enough to damage a couple of bombers which is the same as my Oscars can do...
one of the oversights I´ve encountered in Nikmod is the fact that while Nik has moved back several production dates of Japanese aircrafts, he didn´t change the reinforcements and so you get new sentais/daitais that come in with no aircraft for example, or with only very few as there is no production when the reinforcements arrive. This happened with a Tojo sentai that arrived with 8 ac that were in the pool but no production and also with this Nik nightfighter sentai that arrived when the production just had started. This is a problem as when you fill out the sentai slowly with aircraft, you have to use pilots from the pool all the time instead of the sentai arriving with trained pilots NOT coming from the pool... the enemy has no guns left but still inflicts a lot of casualties within our troops. This is a good example of how poor the WITP ground combat routine is. I´m more or less sure that the enemy is totally out of supply and without a single gun left, we suffer 80 guns disabled / lost today. Lol, a bajonette charge through my lines to take out mortars or howitzers behind my attack lines? [:o] And troops out of supply shouldn´t do any damage at all, or only very small damage... guess the worst thing for combat troops is to run out of ammunition, that´s a bigger problem than to run out of food, at least when it comes down to the ability to inflict losses within the enemy when he attacks your lines... you can be starved for weeks but as long as you have ammunition for your 8.8 you can still put a couple of T-34 out of action. As soon as you don´t have 8.8 ammunition but lots of canned beef it will get hard to knock out the tanks... in WITP´s ground routine it´s all about assault points with modifiers that also don´t work well when out of supply troops still fight at 25% combat strenght. This can end in 200% combat strenght or even more if you have 9 forts, urban hex or mountaineous hex with 100% preparation. That´s just wrong IMO.

And the defenses of Sian collapse! It was a hard fight but in the end I´ve known from the first attack on that the base won´t hold forever. It was surprising to see it surrendering today though, thought it would need another two or even three attacks. I now have more than 350.000 troops sitting at Sian and Homan waiting to get new orders. The troops at Sian need at least 6 weeks for r&r to come back to combat readiness... Nearly 110.000 Chinese prisoners account for 656 points of Allied ground losses that are now at 17.067! [8D] And I´m not yet done! [;)]
The Chinese aren´t worth a lot, when I think about Myitkina where we have seen 25.000 British troops surrender, they accounted for over 800 points of ground losses!

I´m not sure I will attack further inland in China. The front is now at Chungking and Kweiyang and the supply situation for all those Chinese soldiers is just grim. And it will get even worse when all those units reappear at Chungking with 1/3 strenght that surrendered at Sian yesterday. In fact, the Chinese have been knocked out of the war many months ago already. I now have to get enough supply North to repair the oil centers at Lanchow as this base could provide me with 125 x 6 oil points a day which would be something like 5% of my total oil need. So I guess it will be worth it to invest 60.000 supplies there to get it back to 125 as we won´t have to spend a lot of supplies for the ground war in China anymore anyway...

RE: it goes on...
Fine, Sian down, it's either Kweiyang next, or a lot of freed troops for use elsewhere (north ?[;)]). And the reduced supply consumption will be useful too. Well done.

in terms of combat, nothing interesting at all happening this turn. What is interesting though is the fact that 3 of the Allied units already left their positions sieging my base at Dili, now being on the trails West of Lautern. And I bet Miller will move out all his troops. I´ve stated in my last email that it´s obvious that he gave up on taking Dili and if he will be lucky then perhaps his units will be back at Lautern when my troops storm ashore... [;)]
Also interesting is the fact that three USMC para btns were moved to the Fidjis (seen them during their bombardment this turn). Three para btns? Looks like Miller is preparing to grab some bases in the South Pacific...

How is the isolation of Manila going? Any plans to take it anytime soon? From your combat reports, it looks like they are out of ammo; no hits on your 2000ft Oscars.
I suppose that unless you need the points for Auto Victory soon, what's the point of attacking even before 1944? They might all be gone by then.

Manila is sieged by about 100 Japanese assault points. [:D] With the urban bonus the remaining 25.000 Allied troops can´t do anything. I´ve been using Manila as a training target for the last 10 months and at the moment I´m not thinking about taking it at all. As it stands now, I will achieve autovictory in two weeks with a 4,5:1 ratio. Not as impressing as the nearly 6:1 I had two months ago but still. I can´t see how Miller will prevent me from scoring the autovictory in 1/43. But honestly, IMO it´s only nice but that´s it. Miller can (and probably) will win the game. Winning for me means to kill off the Japanese before mid 45 as the Allied. Winning as the Japanese for me is to do better than real life. In terms of conquered territory I did far better than real life but if Miller would be able to drive into the heart of the SRA within the next year then I´ve more or less lost earlier than the real life Japanese.
At the moment I guess I won´t take Manila before I really need to as Clark is a big airfield only one hex away from the target and therefore I´m minimizing my op losses to a max as my ac are just crap and the training strikes from 2 hexes range cause a lot of op losses. Miller can use his bombers to do training runs even against defended bases at max range and doesn´t suffer the op losses I have when attacking an undefended target at 2 hexes.
