Christmas eve brings a surprise to the Allied sitting in Northern Australia! I´ve moved IJA bombers to Koepang to attack Derby´s airfield at max range. And my bombers do so with good results, I was surprised in two ways. First, flak was far from what I´ve expected it to be and second, we only destroyed "few" Mitchells as I´ve expected there to be at least 200+ of them.

and here comes the follow on strike from further North, parts of the strike failed to locate the target though. In the end we took fewer losses than expected as flak at Derby is far from what we´re used to but we´ve also failed to achieve our goal which was to destroy at least a hundred Mitchells or if we would be lucky, to kill a dozen 4Es on the ground. But Miller mostly had obsolete British bombers at Derby and his 4Es are either sitting at Darwin or Wyndham. But in the end I guess it was a nice surprise. Miller has yet to really cap his bases, I thought after my port attacks many weeks ago he would realize that his bases in Northern Australia aren´t safe but he still hasn´t strong fighter units present. I hope that he will bring more fighter squadrons as this would result in fewer bombers.
My bomber losses in this attack were extremly low...
Happy x-mas!

spotted a TF at Tongatapu yesterday so we took the risk to set our bombers on naval attack. Risk because I´m not aware where the US CVs are and they could pop up right next to my base and we would have to watch 100+ ac going down for nothing again... only the IJA bombers took off, not a single IJN bomber flew this attack, but the Helens were enough to sink the single ship TF. Gillis probably only was there to operate a Catalina squadron... during the initial landings, there were only parts of a USMC para btn and a seabee unit... the first bombers missed but after the first bomb hit the AVD was a sitting duck and bomb after bomb struck the doomed ship...

thought this screenshot would be interesting, showing the total air losses. Not surprisingly, a couple of Japanese aircraft show up within the top ten of aircraft lost as we have pretty much focussed on only a couple of aircraft types and use them excessively, which would be the Zero, the Helen and the Tojo, the Oscar and Sally are nearly not used anymore. But also the B-25C losses are quite high and I was surprised that they are that high already. IIRC there are coming 75 out of the factory every month beginning in 1/42 so with 900 produced so far, nearly 800 were destroyed. Of course there are also the reinforcements with a couple of squadrons arriving. But all in all, I guess Miller doesn´t have as many Mitchells as he would like to have and pools are surely low. There are also 30 B-26 each month and I have seen Marauder strikes of 250+ bombers already. With only 30 Wellingtons each month, this ac type should also be in low supply for the Allied at the moment. Not to forget are the 30 LibIII that will come out of the factory in a week. There are also surely not enough Warhawks for all the USAAF squadrons and the B-17s should also be low in the pools if there are any with 10/month. Those total losses look encouraging first hand but on the other side, when I see 600+ bombers launching out of Northern Australia in one turn then there are enough Allied bombers around I guess...
After streamlining production of my aircrafts I´m in good supply of all aircraft needed. Of course I can lose over a hundred Tojos in one day when the Allied bomber armada shows up (unescorted) over Koepang. Don´t want to think about an escorted strike when 100 Warhawks and two dozen Lightnings would show up before or with the bombers. But for the moment, aircraft supply, no matter if bombers or fighters, looks pretty good.

Dili has turned into a level 2 airfield a couple of turns ago and I can use it for offensive missions now also. Based two Zero daitais here and swept Darwin today to clear the path for a bomber strike that I´ve ordered out of Northern New Guinea. Our sweep had to suffer from the Allied bounce and we only get a 2:1 in air losses and when the Zeroes headed home there were still a lot of Allied fighters in the air...

and here comes the bomber strike, well escorted and the whole strike managed to locate the target. The escorts made short process with the remaining Allied fighters and again to my surprise the flak fire over this important base is really light. Recon told me about two units moving out of this base (probably to bolster the defenses of the bases West of Darwin) and as it looks now the defense of Darwin is far from being strong.
Unfortunately though, we again didn´t achieve what I wanted to achieve: kill big numbers of either Mitchells or 4Es. Even though we destroyed over 100 enemy ac today, our losses aren´t really worth this result. Only ac destroyed that are valuable are the Wellingtons and the Tomahawks that could fly "long range" escort.
Miller has increased the numbers of fighters at every Northern Australian base. We now see more and more fighters in the air, guess he had to move them in by rail and the squadrons are now being repaired and only parts have been flying Cap so far. Many bombers will probably be at Perth, the rest at the East coast bases...

RE: it goes on...

after having a victory ratio of around 6:1 a couple of months ago, it dropped considerably again after the loss of Noumea. But we´re still having a nice point ratio, considering the fact that we have NOT seized Manila, which is worth 1300 points for the Allied. Would we have seized this base (wouldn´t be a problem at all) like it is normally done, then our victory ratio would be far over 5:1 with the point loss for the base and 30.000 Allied troops surrendering. But I won´t complain, autovictory never has been a goal for me and while it tells you to a small extend if you´re doing well or bad, IMO it doesn´t tell you if you win or lose. Couple of good moves by Paul and I can still lose in 43 already, not to talk about 44 or even 45. For the moment, I´m doing better (far better [;)]) then the Japs done in real life but that´s of course also because I am able to do things in the game that were just not possible in real life.
The game of course goes on, we will soon getting into a phase that will be purely frustrating for me I guess as the Corsair, Lightning, Thunderbolt and Liberator will make my life hell.

I guess there are around 150 British/Australian fighter bombers dispersed at the remaining bases in China, with the majority at Chungking, but none of them is flying Cap. I´m not sure I would try to attack the base if he would have 80-100 (or even more) Hurricanes on Cap as I guess the losses wouldn´t worth killing two or three dozen fighter bombers. The good thing is that there is probably no base in China left that has enough supplies to enable the enemy to draw replacements so as soon as most of the ac are destroyed it means game over for the Allied airforce in China. Long range bombers can still fly out to Akyab - Ceylon - Karachi. As mentioned earlier, China is knocked out of the war anyway, we will need some 5000 assault points to keep the frontline where it is now and for garrisson duties. The only base I´m going to attack will be Chengtu (North of Chungking) and then the enemy will be blocked at Chungking and Kweiyang to more or less starve away...
I don´t expect the Chinese to be able to launch any offensive anymore...

flak over Lautern is intense but the airfield stays 100% damaged after this attack. Congratulations for the Allies' submission. Those honorless westerners (uh, easterners, from Japan's POV ?) barely deserve to be crushed by your mighty boots.[&o]
Good continuation, you've got the moral victory, now let's just hope you hold longer than IRL.

Found this attack pretty amazing as I had nearly 200 fighters on Cap the last days (out of nearly 290) so Miller is quite bold to send his bombers once again unescorted against Timor. Of course when the bombers show up, we don´t even get 50% of our fighters in the air and while the Wellingtons suffered quite hard today, the 4Es once again came away without that many losses even though we destroyed 3 weeks of replacements. But that´s not that much considering the fact that as soon as my opponent can launch escorted strikes this kill rate will go down to nearly no losses within the 4Es... [:(] When I see 8 B-17s being shot down immediately during the replay and only O N E out of 79 damaged crashes on the way home then I can only scream... it´s ridicoulos. They were beasts, but they weren´t Battlestar Galacticas... [8|] at least 7 more B-24s crashed on their way home. FOW in WITP means the ground losses are DOUBLED, as always. We lose 42 undamaged fighters on the ground.
During my order phase I´ve seen that 200+ aircraft were moved to Lautern (which must be damaged between 85 and 100%) but no strike was launched - pretty sure reason for that was the damage as weather was good. Aircraft were identified as mostly bobmers. I bet Miller will move them out next turn and the airfield will be empty again, but only he can see my aircraft transferes immediately...

after being shot up yesterday, the 4Es already launch again against Timor, meeting 46 out of 72 Tojos I´ve sent to Dili. It was great to see that my fighters were bouncing the Lightnings on escort and it soon turned out that the superior Allied fighter had no chance against the bouncing Tojos. Really love to see Miller using his Lightnings in those small numbers instead of waiting for three or four months to employ them for the first time. This way at least the Lightnings won´t be a real problem because there are only 30 coming out of the factory each month (until the J version with 75 or so). 13 bombers lost too so it was worth sending my fighters here. [:)] Will be interesting what Miller will be doing with his foothold on Timor. At some point he has to either withdraw or send massive reinforcements to make progress out of Timor.
IMO he lost the initiative again. Would he have used his troops, CVs and massive bomber strikes to further attack after the loss of Lautern he could have gained the upper hand. As it is now, I had enough time to at least bog him down and prepare to further build up the defenses around Timor. But it will take at least 3-5 months more until I will have a deeper defensive net of supporting bases, not to talk about the problem of not enough ground units to heavily garrisson everything in the area. It won´t be before mid 43 when massive IJA ground reinforcements will show up and that´s normally the timeline I would like to keep the enemy out of vital areas.

damn it! Why, oh just why did I order this attack, when I´ve stated a couple of turns ago that it isn´t worth the losses as soon as Miller puts up some Cap again...
36 Oscars for escort duty are far too few, especially if they get bounced for the whole engagement. I should have sent two Tojo sentais and another Oscar sentai to China. The Tojos to fly a sweep and 72 Oscars to fly escort... I haven´t so I´ve got what I deserved...

god damn Allied Nikmod flak... this day was a disaster for the IJA... taking that many losses for more or less nothing in return is not good if you want to keep your airforce in a state that is dangerous to your enemy. Attacking at 16.000ft didn´t help us, damage done is minimal and we suffer heavily. Going further up will only result in even less damage to the airfield. Soon Lautern will be operational again and this means trouble, major trouble...
