Interesting read - didn't know the Allies used pack animals in WW2.... Thought it was just the Germans.

Those look no where near big enough for mules unless they were the wrong kind. The mules you want have as a mother a female horse and the dads are donkeys. The products of male horses and female donkeys are less useful and smaller. I believe those animals in the pic are in fact asses (donkeys) and would not be surprised at their use. Mules certainly were used by the US in Italy, Burma and the Pacific in WWII and France in WWI. Mules are wonderful animals and none better than American mules.

Anyways, I've seen lots of jackasses bigger than these. Imagine that soldier trying to ride that animal, it would collapse. There have been cavalry charges on the backs of mules.

So were the animals in post #746. Like jackasses, some are bigger than others. [:)]ORIGINAL: geofflambert

There's another point about that picture. Mules have to be trained. By the time they are they are huge. An ass could be that small while fully trained.

Two mules could pull a 75. If I was a mule breeder I'd be embarrassed to sell an animal that small and call it a mule.

Meh. They don't get appreciably taller during training, just more 'fit'. Like people-some is big (and had big parents), some ain't so big (and didn't have big parents). Others in between like.ORIGINAL: geofflambert

ETA: The picture of mules you had probably were parented by Belgian heavy draft horses. Very popular in the Eastern US Amish communities. The Belgian horses are quite enormous-their offspring are massive in terms of mule size as well.

Here is another donkey next to same Accord with its head in the window. Compare the size of that head with the pathetic human in the pic.
