The Finns move their entire army to Lapland and GRU never figures it out. I wouldn’t wanna be the peeps ‘splainin that one to Uncle Joe! But then he never would have guessed that Winston would be wanting to send him freighters full of goodies, either, so maybe Joe won’t dwell on that too much.

Looks like the Red Army held their tanks one Military District back from the front. Given the generous German loans to Italy and all the other moving parts in this particular Rubik’s Cube like game of WiF, I figured the Russians could have easily held the Pact in this game if they wished. Which reminds me that this game also illustrates the strength of a certain CW build on Turn 1 or Turn 2: their first AMPH. That makes Pact calculations very interesting indeed for the Germans.

I've seen that tactic, and also have used that tactic myself, several times. Not sure what a good strategy to use pre alignment of Finland and pre breaking of the pact to minimize that?

It was pretty obvious to me that Germany would easily break the pact Jul/Aug (playing with breaking pact optional rule). I was trying to time my withdraw from the border so that it'd be so late in the turn when I fell below the pact garrison that my opponent would wait until next turn. That didn't work. I personally find it a very hard balancing act between keeping the garrison necessary for the pact and not losing my army at the border. I'm also find it very hard to withdraw when the pact is still in force when all I can take are combines which gives me 5 land moves that are shared with the CCP.

Sounds intriguing ... obviously too late for me to do that this game. But maybe next as the allies?

“The Pact” is a mysterious part of the game for many. Few have the stones to challenge the Germans @ the border. And pre-Barbarossa adventures for a bored Russian player is this game’s Kryptonite. But if Germany spends big on SUBs and Italians, the Russians can often force a delay in Barbarossa. How many troops will they lose? How many troops are worth facing half as many Fine weather impulses in the Arctic zone in 1941? As long as they are careful not to stack many units, less than one might think.

But that is without the MWiF optional in use. And this game is highly unusual in which units would count on each side.

As for holding Murmansk or a connection to it, I’m not sure that is really possible vs. the a-historical Finns advancing so much. With cardboard, I simply do not play with the Scandinavia map extension. Then the key to holding Murmansk is to be sure to have 3 units in it. Even a decent GARR + 2 divisions can stop all but the luckiest attacks.

Building an AMPH on the first turn of the game is automatic for me as the CW.

I agree with brian brian that the game actually plays better in Finland with the original off-map hexes rule. The scale of units versus distance just doesn't really work in WiF in Finland. The Finns can't stop an invading Russia from entering the country, and the Russians can't stop the Finns from at the least cutting the Murmansk railroad.
I thought I knew how to play this game....
