On This Day
23 June, 1966
After several days of fighting with protesting Buddhists, the South Vietnamese government regained full control of the city of Huế. The lesson learned in the Buddhist Uprising was that "the dominance of Generals Ky and Thieu could not be contested as long as they had the support of the United States." More than three years of internecine strife in South Vietnam between Buddhists and Catholics and between competing military factions effectively ended.

Re: Vietnam
On This Day
24 June, 1954
Following conclusion of the battle of Dien Bien Phu a month and a half earlier, the Battle of Mang Yang Pass (also known as the Battle of An Khê, or the Battle of Đắk Pơ), fought 24-29 June, 1954, was one of the last battles of the Viet Minh's war with the French,
In the latter battle, 3,000 French troops of Groupement Mobile No. 100 withdrawing from An Khê toward Pleiku were ambushed at Mang Yang Pass. The French suffered more than fifty percent casualties before finally extricating the survivors on July 17.
The ambush and destruction of GM 100 was considered the last significant battle of the First Indochina War. Three days after the ambush, a battlefield ceasefire was announced when the Geneva agreements were signed. On August 1 an armistice went into effect, signaling the end of the war and the partition of Vietnam along the 17th parallel. The last French troops left South Vietnam in April 1956, upon request from President Ngô Đình Diệm.

Ngô Đình Diệm arrived in Saigon after four years of exile in France and the United States to assume the post of Prime Minister of the State of Vietnam. Diệm was appointed to the post by Emperor and chief of state Bảo Đại, who lived in France most of the time. Diệm was a Catholic appointed to rule a country that was predominantly Buddhist.
In the words of one historian, "Diệm's attractiveness to his first American patrons derived from three qualities: he was a certified anti-communist nationalist, he was a Roman Catholic, and he understood English." English language ability was rare among Vietnamese at the time.

The Sơn Trà Massacre was a massacre of South Vietnamese civilians committed by the Viet Cong (VC) in Sơn Trà village, Bình Sơn District, Quảng Ngãi Province, South Vietnam on 28-29 June 1968.
Sơn Trà was a fishing village located approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) southeast of Chu Lai Base Area. The VC had threatened to burn the village down because the villagers were refusing to provide aid, food, and recruits. Their patience exhausted, the VC raided the village with grenades, satchel charges, mortars and machine guns.
73 civilians and 15 CORDS workers were killed in the attack and a further 103 civilians were wounded. 570 homes were destroyed with the resulting fires leaving almost 2,800 people homeless. The defenders claim to have killed 4 VC.
