Very good news in Ceylon:
- 25 unescorted G3M3 Nells attempted to strike the amphibious TFs at Jaffna.. while 32 Mohawks and 25 P-400s were waiting fully alerted [X(] 25 bombers shot down!

- BB Valiant, CL Caradoc, DDs Tjerk Hiddes, Fortune, APDs Fox and Parrot bombed Colombo.
Valiant was first torpedoed by midget submarine Ha-23, which was then destroyed by DC attack.
Mission proceeded and in the end it was well worth it, as the increase in disruption likely helped the succesful land attack

- Colombo captured in the 1st try
Even with fort level at 3! As BBFanboy mentioned earlier, "clear" is a bad choice for a last stand defense.
Of the 6 original IJA LCUs at Colombo, 2 are already destroyed and the rest will follow soon... I think it is too late now for an evacuation.
I will hold on until the Paras at Koggala reach hex "SE" of Colombo.. then I would had closed all escape routes

By the way:
- BB Valiant damage is 18 system, 18 float, withdraw date = 184 days ... its new home base is Colombo where I expect it to fully repair

- Colombo is at 100 port, 100 airfield service, 83 runway damage.
Manpower 1(1), resources 11(29), light industry 6(34), repair shipyard 6(34)
Priority repair will be the shipyard, although I will also repair light industry... I know it won't payoff until day #1000 but still I want to make Ceylon as independent as possible

I am back and we have run a couple turns; so main highlights:

- Submarines:
SS-23 lost near Toyohara.
IJN midget submarines Ha-21 and Ha-25 sunk at Colombo. There is one more midget spotted, should die next turn; and even if not, it doesn't have the range to reach Calcutta

- Chengchow fell, with all the starving garrison surrendering.. lots and lots of troops... they will come back at 1/3 strenght in the next few days

- Colombo assaulted, all support LCUs destroyed, 53th division should follow soon

This means that as soon as the assaulting divisions are back in the continent, I will start operations to liberate East India.

With Ceylon taken, what are your thoughts on naval and air balance of power in the Bay of Bengal? Can you operate there at all safely? Maybe neutralize some of his air, for example at Port Blair, or is that much farther in the future?

Very impressive campaign!!! In about 2 weeks, you not only liberated Ceylon and destroyed the IJA garrison, but wrecked the Mini-Mini KB and perhaps most importantly, seized the initiative in the India-Burma Theater!!!

Truthfully, I surprised it went so smoothly....Where the heck is the KB while you're wrecking his Indian Ocean defenses??? I kept thinking the Mini-Mini KB was only bait to draw you out for the KB to come in like a hammer, but it never happened.

it went better than even my most optimist scenario.

I agree I need to keep the pressure, but this time there won't be any surprise, he is expecting an Allied offensive in India. I can see recon planes flying daily over all my advance bases, he will certainly be ready by the time I start.

I will be posting some maps tonight. But the air and naval balance of power is in a direct relation to where the big bases are; I rule anywhere close to Ceylon, Madras and Hyderabad (last two are level 9). He rules anywhere near Rangoon, Calcutta and Pt Blair. Rangoon is a level 7 airbase, while both Calcutta and Pt Blair are at level 5.
As long as I am close to the coast of Ceylon, I have the full advantage of LBAs and Catalinas. I will be happy to fight under this circumstances against anything except maybe the full KB. As soon as I start going south, the scenario flips, and then he will have the full advantage of Mavis and Betty/ Nell. Which of course means I won't do any foray near Pt Blair in the near future. It would simply be a massacre.


Where was the KB?
- Early on it was far away from the Indian Ocean, likely finishing the July refit.. By the way, CVL Ryujo was also most likely also on refit or coming back from refit. Steve mentioned that had this happened a couple days later, he would had been in a much better position... I will ask him in a month or two.
So early on, it was not available, what he sent on day #2: Zuiho, Taijo, Unryo, Hosho + BBs, cruisers, etc was all he had... And I still strongly believe that even after losing the carriers, he had a window of opportunity to destroy the invasion fleet, had he unleashed his significantly bigger surface forces (I had only one cruiser and some destroyers as cover). I am very happy that 2 carriers scared him out [;)]

- Then it would had taken him at least 10 to 15 days to bring the full KB.. this was way too late for intercepting the invasion forces, and he probably guessed (correctly) that I would had hide at Madras, with more than a hundred fighters on CAP.

- Many turns ago, I thought he was going to try to evacuate his troops, but either the "eviction" was too quick or maybe he just didn't care to much about the lost troops. In any case, I need to watch out carefully because he knows I will be transporting the victorious troops to Madras.. perfect timing for attempting to intercept and destroy loaded TFs

This is the situation on India:


- I marked the airbase level, this to highlight the importance of air support for this operation. As you can see, he built Cuttack and Jamshedpur.. which means he will most likely defend them. His 1st line of defense will likely be from Cuttack to Ranchi. Most likely Patna, Coconada and Vizagapadnam will be either abandoned or lightly defended.

- There are few bases that can support offensive operation deep in Japanese occupied India.. Raipur and Benares to some degree, but not enough considering his unlimited airframe replacements.

- So far, I am thinking about attacking on 3 vectors:
1) Bezwada to Vizagapatnam, then Cuttack
2) Raipur to Sanbalpur, then Jamshedpur and Cuttack
3) Benares to Patna, then Ranchi

The first objective of each offensive should be reasonably easy to achieve. The second is where I expect Japan to stand and fight.

Ah, the cost of victory ... is Koggala a big enough port to do the job? I'd be worried about anything facing the Bay of Bengal. BTW thanks for the updated map of India. Between this and some other AARs I am following I didn't realize the Japanese had taken so much of India! That will indeed be a hard fight but I would think (optimistically maybe) you can build up air superiority over time, although admittedly it might be a long time.

Koggala is level 1 so it won't work

I am using Trincomalee which is at level 6 and almost fully repaired. It is close to a lot of airpower. And naval search is significant. If he tried something I will have at least a one day warning
It will unload at Madras (L8) which is very close (less than one day at full speed), and also well guarded

And the key to India, I think, is to use superior American firepower (both air and land) aggressively while the British/ Indian take a more conservative approach to conserve devices
We will see, I plan to overwhelm. biggest problem so far is my lack of proper recon squadrons.. I will have to improvise with Fulmars and short legged Lysanders

- 2 submarines: S-23 lost near Toyohara and KXI near Rangoon. in both cases depth charges seriously damaged the boat, and flooding got out of control a few days after
- AMc Cochin was hit by a midget submarine at Karachi; the midget was also lost.
- 12 cargo ships, 7 were sunk near Diego Garcia by mini KB and/ or submarines early July. 2 were part of Ceylon invasion, sunk by submarines. The rest were due to submarine attacks
- TK HM Storey, sunk near the west coast by submarines

Japan:
- CVE Taiyo confirmed [:D]
- CVL Zuiho likely; last time I saw it it was showing "heavy damage, heavy fires"
- CVE Unryo, not included in this tally, is another probable sinking too: fires, smoke obscuring it
- 1st rate cruiser CA Mikuma; this one is a big question mark. It is reported as sunk on early June. I haven't seen it afterwards.
- 2nd rate cruisers: Abukuma didn't sink, while CL Kashima, bombed on Truk by USN carriers, is now confirmed. KInu and Kiso remains
- Destroyers: nothing new
- Submarines: most are confirmed midget submarines. maybe one or two real ones sank
- Tankers [:)]: 2 big 10K TK Genyo Maru and AO Kenyo Maru. One small 1K, Mitu Maru and 2 YOs. All torpedoed by USN fleet boats
- 9 cargo and 3 transports: Most of these are actually very old losses that only recently got confirmed
- 2 PBs sunk by fleet boat

So overall a very good month for the Allies

In the last few weeks I lost control of the air over Chungking... which was followed by relentless never ending bombings and sweeps.
this plus the overstack situation (212K/160K) destroyed all the supply.. so game over. I disbanded the air force, and will really stop bothering

In brighter news...the liberation of India has started!

First objective: Cuttack!


Cuttack is a level 5 airfield. Intel says 17,520 troops, 139 guns, 31 AFVs... Unless he reinforces significantly I will crush him quick and easy (clear terrain sucks even with good forts)
and if he withdraws (as the map would suggest)... then I get a nice level 5 airfield for free!!

At least -- silver lining time -- the Japanese won't be able to withdraw a lot of ground troops from China for a long while as they need to clean up the last Chinese resistance. It's still preposterous that the Japanese could even come close to total victory in China. On the other hand, India is looking promising; good luck there!

On August 19th Coconada was liberated after a brief, river crossing, shock assault
You can see from the combat report that the Japanese tanks were not up to the Allies' standard. Not even with level 3 fort

50th Tank Brigade has around 50 Improvised heavy AFV + 38 General Lee + 33 Valentine III + 2 Humber + infantry, mortars, support
255th Armored brigade has 47 Stuarts, 34 Gen Lee + 2 Humbers + infantry, mortars, support

The defeated Japanese 2nd Tank regimet had most likely a combination of Type 95 light and Type 97 medium tanks

Improvised heavy AFV should be very weak field armored trucks armed with machine guns/ small AT. All other Allied tanks are superior to the Japanese. 68 tanks destroyed should be around 2/3 of the regiment's strengh

I also tried a para assault on Sambalpur. results were so-so.. should be captured in the next attempt.
