The one good thing about getting hit by CVs is that you now wnow where they are.[8|] Can't say that it was not expected but I had little choice if I am to ensure that Lunga stays in my hands. BUt the damage to my fast Transport TF was not nearly as bad as I expected. And I still have the other two fast TFs[:)]
The eastern half on PNG is now firmly in my control, to have any success in taking it Luskan would have to mount an operation about the same size as that for the PI....and well within range of my LRB and MRB plus swarms of fighters. I am of the opinion that he will for go any large scale ops here. PNG is mine ![:D]

The build-up in the Solomans and the South Pacific goes well. Lunga now has three divisons on the beach with supporting units still being rushed in. To take this Luskan would need at least 6 divisions...possible but that is a LOT of shipping in one small area, I can only cross my fingers and hope that he will comitt.

China is the sleeping dragon, I have so many attack points stored up that i almost pity the poor sods who are going to be caught in the coming storm, but not yet, not just yet, maybe in six months. Unless of course Luskan comitts to a spoiling attack, but I don't think that he has the brains to pull off such a daring operation.

India, well things are static here, I have pulled all ofmy bombers out of Akyab for some R&R, and looking at the numbers that is going to take at least a few weeks to build them back up. Then it is simply a case of finding some new targets..........naval targets are on my list this time.

The North Pacific....well Luskan has taken a few Islands, more to piss me off than for any other logical reason. I'd like to take them back but the shipping required to do so just does not seem to be worth it. Maybe I'll just blockade the place.

He's right about the north pacific - nuisance raids here were all they were. You never know - a foolish allied commander occaisionally decides that those jap transports up in the north can't be escorted by CVs (mine were escorted by a tiny little CVE so close enough) ad might send his cvs off to get some real practise in. That was the feint to try and lure his cvs away from what I planned to do at Lunga.

Unfortunately, I realised where Raver's CVs were a few turns later. Nothing lost I suppose - but there is one spot on the map he can't afford me to CV-blockade, and it is pretty obvious when you look at the map. lots of allied air cover, lots of allied troops to supply etc.

I hate the fact that as the japs if I'd lost 11 ships from a fast transport cruise (almost sank more ships than I lost planes) it would sting. Raver on the other hand thinks "oh well, I've got 2 more. Good thing the troops weren't aboard".

I am unsure about my deployment of CVs. The 4.5 cv division thing looks pretty dated at the moment because refits are ruining it. Going to have to give it some thought.

Very quiet turn this turn - I have a total of 12(!) working planes at Rangoon now. Transferred them all out. I'm not gonig to beat Raver's self imposed hiatus on bombing. Unsure of what to do here still. Especially since we were neck and neck in points (I was 3X his score) but he just got 400 points worth of dead planes on the ground etc . . . drat.

I did sink the Sturgeon and the Guardfish (one off Rangoon, the other off Kagoshima).

In other news, the RN has to withdraw 1bb 1 cl and 2 dd by the end of the month. This is good news, although the RN hasn't put in much of an offensive showing lately, aside from that rather nasty swordfish attack of two weeks ago. I can't leave Rangoon without a defending surface force while there are planes on the ground.

Let this be a lesson to all you allied and jap players. Allies - be sure to get your troops out of singapore - and into burma. Japs - be sure to cull those troops before they hit burma, and when you get to burma and take rangoon and think "how long can my luck last?" don't sit on your ass, go and find out the hard way by pressing on.

Theatre by theatre you'd have to say I won the SRA in this game, but Raver has won China (the early game ensures he's going to win the late game) and he's won Burma. Solomons and PNG hangs in the balance . . .

I thought the bluff at Java soured the SRA a little for you Luskan you won it but were not able to exploit that win due to that bluff.

Yeah I have to agree that my bluff worked well in Java, it really slowed Luskan down, if he had of reconned by fire he would have seen that. Actualy Luskan's subs are giving me a hard time in the Coral Sea. I am going to have to step-up my ASW in this area.
IMHO China is far from won, I control everything west of the rail links but only because Luskan chooses not to venture that far west. The Chinese armies are a long way short of being ready to launch offensive operations. However, I have been boyed with the successes of the B-25 groups in Burma and am really thinking about deploying them to China to course some mayhem. I'm sure that idea will impress the bannanananana boy[:D] There are some really juicy targets in China that are begging to be bombed. But it is all a question of supply. These large 200+ air raids look impressive and course truck load of damage, but they eat up supplys at a alarming rate[:(].

The battle for PNG is all but won, well cetainly in the eastern half of the Island, it is just a question of getting more Eng units in to exploit the gains that I have made. (The allies are still deperately short of eng and support units, I have enough inf to fight the war but little in the way of base units to support a war on a wide front).

The Solomans is in the balance, but if my LRB from PM can keep Rabal's airfields shut down (or simply to dangerous to use) than I can win this one, even with Luskan still in full control of the seas. I was lucky and got the troops in first to Lugna.....but Luskan is carrying out a vey successful harrasment with the Tokyo express out of Rabal, the last one which had 3 BBs no less ! Until I get henderson field up and running I can't station and counter force there, so as in real life, the troops are somewhat pissed at the navy.

RE: Rangoon dies

Post by Luskan »

My confidence has risen with regard to China.

A few turns ago my elite zeros beat up 260 of Raver's b17s over rabaul and shot down ten. Not bad. Although a little underwhelming if you're the allied player.

Wharton sank. Finally.

Then last turn I get lucky by hitting a mine and having 2 points of fire damage and about 3 extra sys damage points tacked onto Kaga. That would have really stung if it had gone badly.

Then last turn and this turn I launched some carpet bombing of my own - against the heart of industrial china. You'll remember my not so briliant Sally pilots bruised the resource production at one of those chinese cities down from 250 to about 200? Months ago? It is still down 43 points - and I haven't bombed it since - and my bombers (on airfield attack) have put in some good moves to his supply dumps on the airbases 2 turns running. A bit of Raver's own medicine back at him. This leads me to 2 excellent conclusions.

1. Raver doesn't have the eng units to repair damage to his resource base. This is excellent news as it means I can take out his chinese industry and not have to worry about him rebuilding it.
2. Raver doesn't have the tens of thousands of surplus supply points required to be able to repair resources damage. This lack of surlus resources was always going to be there - China can't support that number of troops - and Raver's got a colossal number of them since he barely lost ANY.

So, my sallies, now trained up a fair bit, are going to work over his cities and strain Indian supply of China even further.

Surely Raver will just counter with a few Sqns of spits or hurricanes and use them to protect his resource base.

An opponent tried to do this to me and I just moved a marine corsair sqn to chungking and that quickly changed his attempts at that especially as we were doing three day turns and the Spits and Corsairs chewed em up before he could change the orders.

(On the other side I send every Wellington in India from Chandpur to bomb rangoon with fighter cover at Andaman and Akyab both fighter strips got clouded over and for three days my Wellingtons went in unsuported I lost 130 Wellington bombers in 3 days because of that little screw up)

God I hate 3 day turns...

Ooops got a little off topic

Well this turn Raver's CVs were sighter NORTH OF THE SOLOMONS AND RABAUL!!

Looks like they're on their way to Truk, looking to see if they can't find CV division 4. I'm a bit shaky on the exact numbers of CVs, but Raver is playing in death star mode, so I'm betting all of them. Allied surface combat units have appeared north of Gili Gili as well.

My CV divisions are still a little spread out. I may give the order to condense, although a battle in 1942 between his allied CVs and the legions of betties and zeros i've got at my island bases will only end one way.

There will have to be a CV battle, but I'm not going to commit 2.5 jap cvs to battle a foe that could be any size.

Well, Kirishima has had it - forgot to get her to return to Rabaul - and she's now mid ocean (what an idiot that captain is) with 99, 98, 15 two turns later. This is what I get for not paying attention (although if she'd been disbanded at Rabaul she'd be b17ed to death anyways).

Raver's CV op was smooth. He didn't know I had spotted him several turns in a row prior to it - and didn't take the bait and the careful trap i'd set for him. Instead, he withdrew his CVs south past Rabaul, did some nasty work on the way (biggest ship of mine he's sunk so far is 1 CA) to my precious DDs, of which I don't have many, and escaped south scott free, with a bit of experience under his belt.

Nagumo was PISSED about this.

Raver also bombarded Attu and caused a bit of damage up there. reinforcements are on the way (base force, CD unit, small inf units to continue aleutians campaign) but it really is just a side show. I can't afford to send 2 BBs up there like Raver can.

On a side note, saw that your afternoon raid against Rabaul went unescorted while all Wildcats escorted 11 SBD searching a sunk DD. This kind of mission can decimate your CV airmen and is completly stupid.

I agree that sometimes fighters may get lost, formations may lost cohesion but I strongly doubt it is the case here.

Fighters units (and part of it) should try to escort every raid and then each unit should have a chance to lose the formation. Right now, WITP often didn't escort the biggest raid to the biggest enemy port, where fighters are probably waiting for easy kills....

Great AAR! Do you fellas have a grand total figure of losses for each side?

1) Total aircraft, breakdown of fighters, bombers etc would be nice but just the total if not available

2) All major combat ships sunk, from DDs up...

thanks, keep up the good work!

I've seen this before and am not too worried about it......SBDs and TBDs will fly alone IF there is not any enemy fighters.

Disagree entirely. Outside the fact that there are no fighters either over the TF all your WIldcats decide to fly over, I just saw a PBEM turn (v1.4) where my Zeroes did the same while 150 Vals and Kates attacked a US TF off PH on 9th Dec 1941. Opposition was slight (2 P-36A, 2 P-26 and 8 P-40B) but I still lost 15 planes to CAP, including 9 shot down by the same P-36 pilot... Had any of my 6 Zero units escorted this raid (sent in two waves) rather than 12 Vals bombing some DMS S of PH, score would have been more even.

I have no problems with small raids (one or two units) losing their escort and being slaugthered by CAP but seeing ten or twelve Val and Kates units attacking without any fighter is a big problem... especially as these high morale units will never turn back.
