So, since I haven't seen any real mentions about his style I thought I'd ask if anyone who had played him had any insights?
I've heard that he's one of the best and most aggressive WitP players around. AFAIK Kereguelen plays against him, and Przemcio made a short AAR until he lost Australia (including the East Coast) to Jagdfluger.

VSWG,
Aye, I've heard he's good, has taken Australia and crucified a fair few opponents ( jwxspoon, Mastruko etc) with extremely aggressive play early on - including massive counter-invasions which checked Japanese advances early on. That's why I want to play him. There's no point playing someone you can easily beat. The fun isn't in winning but in playing well and playing the best forces you to play your best. I'm doing my research on him today - forum searches etc -  and will post my conclusions here later.

Well we've gotten about a week under our belts so I think it is time to update this again.

Based on my research I think it is fair to say Jagdfluger has only rarely been beaten ( but importantly he HAS been beaten ) and that he is equally happy to play as either the Japanese or the Allies. He also seems to have a great attention for detail and is willing to play under almost any house rules - believing, I presume, that ability will win out. He is also an extremely aggressive player with several of his ex-opponents likening his aggressive style to my own.

The main question in playing him was always going to be whether this aggression was going to be directed at the point of the spear or at the shaft. After a week of playing him I can say definitively that when week he will attack the entire length of vulnerable SLOCs relying on such attacks to divert resources from other theatres. Leaving areas behind in the rear for mopping up later is far too dangerous. Unortunately in this game I pretty much left the DEI alone. So, my first priority in January is still India but my second priority has become the elimination of isolated bases ( particularly those with level 4 airfields) in my rear.

Good luck! This ought to be intresting.

It is intresting to see what kind of plans Jagdfluger has in his sleeves. This will be the first well documented AAR when someone is going againts him.

The first of the day's attacks on Amboina goes in. 7 Hudsons destroyed on the ground is a good start. Unfortunately none of the infinitely more dangerous Beauforts were destroyed. The second prong of my plan for dealing with this threat is loading up my troops from Macassar and using them to complete the capture of Timor followed shortly afterward by the capture of Amboina. Meanwhile a Brigade from the Phillipines has been redirected to take Jolo and the southern Borneo bases. By the end of the month this problem should be pretty much removed.

The Beauforts launch from Koepang on Timor today. It looks like Jagdfluger is going to use the fact that the Allies get to go after the Japanese to hop his planes around from base to base. The only solution to this is to close all his optional bases through either repeated attacks or capture and then attack the only base left. This will take till the end of the month unfortunately.

Unfortunately the Japanese forces at Trincomalee are out of supplies. Sheesh. [8|] There goes another two weeks as I arrange resupply, rest up and then re-attack.

TF 11 troops unloading over beach at Luganville [New Heb], 71,111

Japanese ground losses:
54 casualties reported

The landings at Efateville and Luganville are purely or testing purposes. I'm landing 30 or so AV at each in order to gauge the level of enemy response to an encroachment of his defensive perimeter. What do I hope to find out? Simple, everyone has a pattern and knowing whether Jagdfluger's is to counter-attack immediately with what is at hand or to wait a fortnight and attack with overwhelming force is information well worth the loss of an SNLF although, obviously, I'll save a cadre of the unit for rebuilding purposes. I must take losses to gain information but there's no need to make them permanent losses.

Personally I think that he will attack within 8 or 9 days which is the absolute minimum amount of time it will take to load an assault unit up from Noumea and then transport it to Luganville. He will sacrifice finesse and preparation for speed, just as I would.

And yet another example of Jagdfluger's quick footwork. He staged a load of DEI fighters into the Phillipines to intercept one of my daily raids on Manilla. I am sure that by the time I bomb them tomorrow the fighters will be gone. It is proving costly to get to know his moves but patterns are beginning to appear and that's the important thing.

The only real question is whether Jagdfluger is doing this to goad a reaction out of me or whether he actually thinks non-resource, non-HI raids actually are significant problems for me. I think he's too good to believe that raids on my airfields are important so I think we'll see him gradually transition to hitting oil, resources and HI. I particularly expect my northern oilfields to be annihilated. Again, it will be interesting to see how long it takes him to switch his targetting protocols.

Just continuing to keep Palembang closed. Now the question becomes whether Jagdfluger will keep basing his bombers in one of the two Level 4 airfields I am leaving open or whether he will be willing to base them at lower-level airfields, substituting bombs for torpedoes and lighter payloads for heavier payloads. I'm betting that he'll go for Singkawang - a level 3 airfield - and accept the lower payload etc in return for superior survivability.

Damn! The first serious loss of the year. The massing of all his available torpedo-bombers allows Jagdfluger to get an overwhelming raid in on the forces off Trincomalee. Five torpedoes fatally hole the Nemo-san and she slips underneath the waves. Still, she has shown the utility of the design and validated its inclusion in the mod - which are the main aims of this game - so all's well that ends well.

These ships, and many others, were waiting at Moppo in order to load elements of two infantry divisions I've bought out from the Kwantung Army. Damage is very minor and loading is accelerated so that the harbour will no longer be occupied in case of similar attacks in the future.

What is interesting here is that Jagdfluger has hopped his planes out of Manilla. He is adopting a very airmobile campaign. He flies bombers in after I issue my orders, lets them strike for a day and then flies them out before my retaliatory strikes can hit the base. Clever. One could argue about whether or not it would have been possible but it is well within the limit of our rules and, as such, it is entirely fair game.

33 bombers attack my fast fleet oilers. 17 are downed before they reach the target and 3 turn back. The remaining 13 make their bombing runs but a combination of the extreme range, heavy AAA and rampaging Zeroes throws their aim off letting the threatened shipping escape without damage. I'm particularly happy with the 5 destroyed Marauders as those planes are particularly dangerous threats.

Ouch! This TF ended the day 1 hex away from the protection offered by my carriers and paid the cost for its lack of speed. Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

A Chinese unit had crossed into Kaifeng. I believe this formation is acting as reconnaissance for the main push. I've been keeping Kaifeng's defences weak in order to draw the Chinese in but I have several divisions available to march in within a few days of the orders arriving. Now that Jagdfluger has pegged my defensive strength at about 500 AV I think it is time to triple it and play havoc with his planning.

Soon the 29th division will land on Midway. With any luck the Allies won't have reinforced it yet and I'll be able to take it. If they have reinforced it I'll just be forced to use Midway as a lure for continued USN resupply efforts and, consequently, losses before lowering the boom on it in late 1942.

I'm landing an SNLF at Lahaina. With a bit of luck it should be enough. If it isn't I have another SNLF ready to land but no shipping to transport it... 2 weeks from now a new resupply convoy should reach Hilo and I can use that to transport the necessary troops. It is all on a bit of a shoelace really which is fun.

Attacks on the Heavy Industry in Manchukuo simply can't be tolerated. I have enough oil, resources and supply but I do not have nearly enough HI. I will begin shifting the Mikes I have to provide aerial cover over Manchukuo. Now we'll see how good they are.

The Nates actually performed significantly better than I would have expected given that they are facing Spitfire V Bs, the premier Allied fighter plane. Chinese squadrons fight in India while British pilots fly against the Japanese in China. It really is a crazy old war [8D]

Well worth the effort. 3 Kates are destroyed in return for 12 torpedo bombers and 3 other enemy bombers.

Pretty soon we are going to exceed 3,000 Allied planes destroyed. By the end of the month we should be close to 3,500 Allied planes destroyed. Those are absolutely horrific and untenable losses no matter how you look at them.

I think this was a fairly good exchange. 6 of my bombers went down in return for 11 enemy planes destroyed in the air or on the ground, including 3 of the ever-deadly B-26s.

And my first Me-264 mission. I am throwing massive resources into my strategic bomber programme. Current production rates are tiny, 15 per month but I am hoping to have that up to 90 per month by the end of the month with engine production to match.

When one realises that a single Me-264 can carry 6 times the payload of a Ki-21 II Sally, 16 times the payload of a Ki-48 I Lilly or Ki-30 or 32 over at least three times the distance with armour, greatly increased defensive armament and roughly double the durability of the Sally or Lilly it can be seen that this level of production will bring about a massive change in Japanese bombing capabilities, a change I intend to exploit fully.

The Tojos again performed quite poorly and the majority of Rufes again disappointingly failed to fly. The results were quite predictable.

The O-20 which had earlier been damaged by my ASW TFs was, today, bombed while in port, probably taking on more mines. With a bit of luck it'll have to remain in port to repair damage, a choice which I'll make sure is fatal.

Hmm the Allies muster only 62 AV at present. I think it is all going to come down to whether or not the reinforcement convoy carries troops or not.

I have been slowly and VERY conspicuously moving KB away from Hawaii in the hope of luring the Allies out. I think I am seeing the first stirrings of refuelling of TFs under air cover there. Time to move back and collect my prize I think. I'll sprint in close tomorrow and see what is there. If there are ships I'll sink them, if not I'll make for Midway and catch the merchants there.

It looks like the Allies had a DD escorting their TFs and that it has attempted to intervene with my landings. My transports beat it off without loss but this leads me to worry about the presence of additional Allied forces, particularly their CVs. If they are present my losses will be extremely heavy. Tomorrow I will move away from Midway and try to give my own CVs time to establish superiority in the region.

Soviet submarines seem to be taking up position around the Phillipines and in the DEI. I estimate there are about 30 of them but that's fine, that's just 30 more subs to sink. If he commits them to the DEI I shouldn't have too much trouble sinking 4 or 5 a month and getting rid of the problem by mid-42.

Ouch! If it weren't for Jagdfluger's relative insensibility to losses I would say that's got to hurt. As it is all I will say is that it will reduce his capabilities somewhat but won't stop him continuing to make attempts to attack my forces.

Ouch, that atoll shock attack rule really is something. The 29th Division is getting wiped out. In addition elements of 3 additional Allied regiments appear to have landed yesterday.

Well, time to call off the invasion of Midway, establish a couple of Level 5 airfields and begin an Me-264 campaign to bomb Midway back into the stone age. It'll take a few months but it'll also act as a great lure for Allied resupply and reinforcement efforts +/- carrier support. This will give me the opportunities for favourable naval attrition I've been looking for in early to mid-42. The main thing I have to watch out for is the Allies building Midway up with a Level 3 port and using it to store fuel for a raid on the mainland. Short of that I should be pretty safe.

Yup, I-6's Captain wasn't satisfied with torpedoeing the Empire Castle once in the morning. When he heard it didn't sink he came back for seconds, put a second torpedo into it and sank it. I have been methodically replacing all of my Captains with the most aggressive replacements possible. So far this has paid off handsomely.

The Soviet Navy is sneaking out through the DEI and Phillipines. I am letting it go and standing down my air search as:
a) I can kill it later.
b) It is useful to appear to be negligent in this areas as it may tempt Jagdfluger to commit major surface units at a later date.
c) Only minor units are sneaking out ( DDs, APs, AKs etc).

The only reason I killed this ship is that it moved within 3 hexes of Singapore and it is important to draw the line somewhere. It is important to look vulnerable to moderately deep attacks but it is also important not to look so completely stupid that I invite a major raid on the Home Islands.

Do bombardment attacks increase experience for ground units? I am asking because the 4 Replacement Regiments ( sort of depot units) which I have drafted into Manila to bolster the defence against Allied counter-attack there now have experience in the high 50s and low 60s. These units start with experience in the 40s and have seen no combat other than the bombardment attacks. If bombardment gives them experience then these sorts of sieges will result in really excellently trained armies for the garrisoning of isolated islands in 1943 and 1944.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!
A second important Allied bomber base removed, 4 more to go. Slowly but surely we'll get there. Rushing this would require a greater diversion of resources and India's the important thing now. It all hinges on India. Everything he is doing in the DEI and China and the Pacific and the Soviet Union are all designed to bleed necessary resources from India. It cannot be allowed to occur. I have 19 divisions earmarked for India which will give me double the 3,000 AV the Allies can muster in defence, ten in the first wave, 9 in the second. I will also have the possibility of reinforcing with a third wave massing roughly 5 divisions in a month's time if things are going poorly. Everything else is defended or attacked by mere mirages of strength and the appearance of future offensives (most of which are not being considered for many months, if at all).

I thought I should do a quick rundown of the forces in India or on their way so people could follow what is happening.

2nd, 4th, 33rd and 38th Divisions are stalemated at Poona facing some 1200 AV of Allied defenders. This is all according to plan as Poona is clear terrain, requiring an equal measure of defenders to hold it - since it benefits from no defensive bonuses save what its forts give. I have 1400 AV present and this means the defenders must have at least 1000 AV to ensure it holds ( as they won't have had time to build strong fortifications yet). In a short time I will begin bombing it to prevent further fortification and to continue to force the enemy to defend it in full measure.

Why is this so important? Simple, 3000 AV minus 1200 AV = 1800 AV. Add in a few hundred AV for the defence of Bombay and Karachi against surprise amphibious assault and we can see that the Allies will have about 1500 AV left to contest the rest of the country ( 5 divisions worth). With 4 of my divisions holding at Poona I will have 15 left to contest the rest of the country which, according to plan, gives me precisely the 5 to 1 advantage I need to make it a speedy battle. It should be, mostly, over by the end of February which is pretty good time considering the size of the country and scale of its defences. I haven't forgotten about the forces rushing to its defence from Burma either but I consider that their addition will be compensated for by the loss of the Brigades on Ceylon.

As to the rest:
1. 1 Division and an Army HQ have taken a stupid coastal path to Poona. They will take about a fortnight to march out of their wrong turn :(. They were intended to support the forces at Poona and force the Allies to commit no less than 1500 AV ( half their force) to that blocking action.

2. The 52nd Division and 1st Tank Brigade are holding just over the river to the south of Pangim. They are blocking the Allies from marching up to Pangim by the back route.

3. 19th Division is going to make a demonstration at Madras... Hopefully a demonstration which will draw a few more Brigades in. By anchoring itself in Urban terrain the 19th presents an unpassable obstacle and secures my southern flank.

4. 3 Divisions, the 200th, 201st and 28th are completing the occupation of Ceylon and will land in the south-western portion of India over the next fortnight.

5. Units at sea and on their way:
IJA Southern Area Army HQ, 5th, 18th, 48th, 54th Divisions, 55th Division "Brigade", 7th and 8th Tank Regiments and various engineer units. In a little while once I've worn down Singapore enough I'll also be taking a division out of there and sending it. I don't know which one I will be taking yet though as it all depends on which one is in better condition at the time.

*Cue A-Team Music* If you've ever been bullied by an ASW TF, if no-one can help you and if you happen to be in the Pacific maybe you can call.... the I-6 Team [:D]. Not content with sinking a cargo ship yesterday with two separate attacks the I-6's captain decides that, yes, payback's going to be a bitch and that Lamson's going to learn that lesson in a very personal manner.

Day Air attack on Heiho [Chosen] , at 66,25

Me-109E-4 Mike x 32

Allied aircraft
I-16 Type 24 x 21

Me-109E-4 Mike: 5 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
I-16 Type 24: 4 destroyed
LaGG-3: 19 destroyed
Yak-1: 5 destroyed

Nates got about two of the Kills the Mikes got the other 26. That's about a 5:1 exchange rate. Not half bad. Once I have enough fighters I'm going to institute a defensive doctrine as follows:

1. Mikes on CAP over front-line bases and Harbin.
2. Zeroes basing out of Harbin conducting LRCAP over friendly bases which are not covered by Mike CAP.

Once that takes the sting out of the Soviet air offensive I will then move over to the offensive using some of my Mikes to conduct fighter sweeps over front-line enemy bases, forcing the enemy to gather his bombers and fighters at a smaller number of bases farther from the front. Then the Me-264s and Zero sweeps will go after them. I can't eliminate the Soviet air force as an ongoing threat but I can cerrtainly beat it back significantly such that it won't be an ongoing threat. I would hope to have this mostly done by the end of February. It is just going to take a while to get the necessary fighter numbers while I'm still embroiled in active aerial fighting over India. If the fighting there remains as intense as it currently is I may find myself forced delay the offensive side of this mission for some time.

Even vastly outnumbered the Mikes managed to do an excellent job. Even counting losses of the obsolete Nates I managed a 3:1 and if we ignore those losses, since they contributed so little to the fight, the ratio is back up at between 4 and 5 to 1.

"Do bombardment attacks increase experience for ground units? I am asking because the 4 Replacement Regiments ( sort of depot units) which I have drafted into Manila to bolster the defence against Allied counter-attack there now have experience in the high 50s and low 60s."

Yes they do, they also increase the experience of hose being bombarded.  It can be a double edged sword if you get locked into a stalemate.

bbf,

Thanks, that's good to know. Thanks for the info. It looks like it will prove useful to move some of my very poor units ( 10 to 40 Exp) in to bombard enemy stay-behinds with a view to getting their experience up to reasonable levels. After all the Allied USMC and Army ( but especially the USMC) have unrealistically high experience levels in-game, IMO.
