Rise & Fall of the Third Reich is near the top of my must have WW2 books.... von Mellenthin's Panzer Battles too

I'll second that - "Rise and Fall" is by William Shire - essential.

Heinz Guderian wrote a memoir called "Panzer Leader" - IIRC.

Albert Speer wrote "Inside the Third Reich" - weirdly fascinating.

An excellent book is "Stopped at Stalingrad: The Luftwaffe and Hitler's Defeat in the East 1942-1943" by Joel Hayward.

The Times Atlas of the Second World War is awesome. It's out of print but I picked up a copy on Ebay. Quality maps, tables, charts, write-ups etc on everything you could imagine.

Jablonski's 'Airwar' duo ?
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

I was shocked to see this one didn't get mentioned until the third page. It isn't a light read by any stretch of the imagination, but there is no more authoritative source in my mind. I've read it front to back twice and I still learn things every time I pick it up.

There is no better spent $16.50 for someone who wants to know has the mental stamina to absorb this book.
