Canton Island falls.

Another outpost which will need remodeling after the new renters moved in and will have to be evicted. Where next Mike? My insurance company wants to know.

RE: China Situation Map

Post by Freedom205 »

Not much going on right now. KB is resting and troops are preparing for new invasions. Soon all will know where the next landings will be. China is starting to wind down. I dont want to take out China, I just want free access to the North-South Rail line, and my troops in city hexes.

update--1/19/42

Post by AdmNelson »

1/19/42

It has been quiet for the last two weeks. The Java invasion is coming. Three TFs were spotted about 250 miles from Batavia. Either Batavia or Merak will be the landing site.
Two different air attacks do some damage

CA Kumano, Bomb hits 1 500lb

DD Akatsuki, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage Sinks after second air strike and one more fish.

KB is moving somewhere or not. I guess I will find out soon

It is only a few subs, and you still control the surface. As for the Entrerprise, well 540 days from now a new Enterprise well be in action 1701-B.
I got all the air groups intact off both the Enterprise and Lexington before their sinkings. So in OZ, there is 4 Sqs of SBDs and 2 TBDs floating around.

RE: Allied CVs strike back

Been some time since an update, not much going on. Preparing for the assault on Java, which opened up a chance for the Admiral to strike. He hit a couple DDs that were sub hunting near Canton Island, glad the APs had left there just a few days earlier.

RE: Feb. 6 Update

Post by Freedom205 »

Thanks to some ISP and work problems, Lew and I have been having a hard time keeping this war moving at a quick pace. It seems we may be somewhat back on track now, so here is an update.
IJN forces invaded and captured Banka today, and may forces continue to prepare for the invasion of Java. (the Admiral has far too many Subs and PTs in the area between Palambang and Batavia for my liking. I keep picking away, and soon the invasion will be back on track) My mini KB, operating near the western tip of OZ, tracked down and attacked two TFs in that area (1 containing 2 TKs, the other 4 AKs) sinking about half the ships, with the other half soon to be at the bottom. My Nells and Betties based at Palambang and Balikipan attacked AKs and a surface group containg the Exeter on the western coast of Java, puting 2 fish in the Java.

The battle for Java has started, Mike trying to clear the subs all the way from Palembang to Batavia. It might be easier for him to march his forces across the water along the tops of all the subs I have there.

RE: KB back in action

Post by Freedom205 »

After seeing surface units running back and forth from OZ to PM, decided to hit them with the KB. Overall action was less than satisfactory. 15 SBDs escorted by about 20 P40s were intercepted by 39 Zeros on CAP. Zeros managed to maul the P-40s but never touched the SBDs. This is an aspect of NIKs mod that I really like. (no kidding) it is a very realistic outcome, and this doesnt happen all the time. In a stock game those 15 SBDs would have been toast. Zuikaku now is burning, but should make it to port with no problems.

RE: Pursuit of the Exeter

Post by Freedom205 »

After my Nells hit the Exeter, I figured she would flee north, so I sent my mini-KB in pursuit at flank speed. I had anticipated the need for a run north earlier, and had placed a replenishment TF in the open sea west of Batavia. Lucky for me, we found her and sank her.

RE: The Day After Christmas

Post by brisd »

I just started reading this AAR, interesting first week of the war.  I liked the Japanese initial invasions but not the dispersal of naval forces.  The IJN has superiority these first months, I would keep your ships in LARGE TF's that overwelm any Allied response or face loses like the Chokai and Kirishima.  And this allowing each other to read each others posts only favors the weaker side, but at least this one will be short at this rate.  Sorry if I am critical, just seems not a good game winning strategy.  [:-]   Best of luck to both.

RE: Japanese Response

Post by Freedom205 »

brisd, I would like to thank you for your comments and hope that you dont take offense to my response. Your points are all valid, and well taken. I am by no means an expert on this game, but I can promiss you I do know my way around the map. I have played some very well known players and would not cower from any challenger. For me, the best game you will ever play against someone is the first game you play against them. You dont know how they act or react, whether they are agressive or passive, etc. Lew has proven a VERY good allied player, and served me some nasty surprises. Many of these surprises I could easily avoid in hind sight, or if I played him again. But the surprises that cost me ships were, imho, unavoidable. I would bet both my name and the farm that if someone took the time to set up a battle like the Kirishima was lost in, and replay it 10 times that the Japanese would not lose a capital ship. I would lick my chops if someone offered me a Night fight in 1941 where I get the Hiei, Kirishima, a CL, 3 1st class DDs and a CS and the allied player only gets a CA. That is a fight I would bet I would win every time...... EXCEPT this time. That is what makes this game great, imo. I play this game for points, and I want to engage as much of the allies as I can at the start. Could I have avoided those two losses.......YES, but then I wouldnt have sunk over 2400 points worth of allied ships. I dont profess to have the secret to this game, but I am trying to win. As far as each of us having access to this thread, we wanted to try something that nobody else had done. We wanted to be able to take friendly jabs at each other in public, maybe it was ill conceived and a failure? Either way, it's too late to turn back now.
Please keep the comments coming, I welcome them all

RE: Assault on PM

Post by Freedom205 »

Time has come to hit PM. I will give specific details along with some graphics in the next post after the troops hit the beachs. This turn I made further preparations for the invasion of Java. Lew seems to have every darn sub in the west between Palambang and Batavia. I read in a book about the IJN subs of WWII where some IJN merchant marine survivors (from a sunken ship) mentioned that they felt you could walk from the sea of Japan to the Philipines on the periscopes of US subs. I had all my LRLBA in the area hit Soerbaja (spelling) and managed to put a fish and couple bombs in the CL Sumatra. This should keep her from bothering my MSW sweeping Batavia this time around.

RE: D Day tomorrow

Post by Freedom205 »

D-day for Port Moresby will be tomorrow. I wanted to keep the APs hugging the KB for another day just in case of attacks from LBA. (which, when looking at the losses Lew suffered on the ground at PM, seemed to have been his plan) We hit the Admirals airfield at PM with 150 Nells and Betties, along with a well delivered surface bombardment destroying about 45 planes on the ground. We have earmarked 3 full divisions along with the South Seas Detatchment for this invasion, should be enough despite the fact that Lew was landing more defensers as soon as the week prior. Elswhere, my mini KB was spotted 1 day too early near Colombo. The plan was to sneak in and hit a sleeping British CV. With surprise lost and me only packing CVLs, only time will tell if I was smart enough to break contact. The next few turns will be full of action..............

President Roosvelt turns to Gen Marshall after the radio message to the defenders of Port Moresby,

" General do we have enough troops to send to Port Moresby?"

"Sir, Mister President we don't have even enough troops hold a bar on liberty night."

RE: D Day

Post by Freedom205 »

The troops began landing at PM today, while the bombers and surface units continued to pound the airfields. In the north near Colombo, Lew surprised me, and his CV Tf reacted twice to get within torpedo range for his stringbags. The Brits managed 1 fish into the Ryuho, while I managed 1 into the Indomitable and 4 in the Revenge. Neither side gave much of a showing of itself. I was trying to stay 4 hexes away from him, but his reacting caught me off guard.
Perhaps PM will fall in 1 day?
