The Boston Red Sox flexed their muscles and beat the Braves in a slugfest, 13-10. With a strong wind blowing out, Mark Loretta homered twice. David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, and Mike Lowell homered once each. For the Braves, Edgar Renteria, Matt Diaz, and Pete Orr homered.

Boston jumped out to a 10-0 lead after a 5-run 4th inning. Atlanta starter Lance Cormier could not get out of the 4th inning. Cormier was called up before the game to replace scheduled starter John Thomson, who was placed on the disabled list. Cormer was charged with 7 runs in only 3+ innings.

For the Red Sox, Josh Beckett pitched 3 perfect innings, then was pulled from the game in the 4th due to tiredness. Atlanta scored once in the 4th, then erupted for 5 runs of their own in the 5th, cutting the Boston lead to 10-6. The Red Sox eventually led 13-7 going into the bottom of the 9th. The Braves tallied 3 runs in the 9th before closer Jonathan Papelbon was called upon to stop the bleeding. The Braves actually got runners on the corners off Papelbon with only one out, bringing the potential tying run to the plate. Papelbon survived, however, striking out Edgar Renteria and retiring Chipper Jones on a line out to right field.

Brave catcher Brian McCann extended his association record hitting streak to 19 games. McCann collected a single in the bottom of the 5th.

The Braves are now 38-32 for the season.

The Boston Red Sox completed a 3-game sweep of the Braves, winning 6-5. Atlanta jumped on Boston starting pitcher Curt Schilling for 3 runs in the 1st, but Schilling settled down and watched his team take the lead in the 3rd inning. The Braves tied the score in the 4th. Boston collected single runs in the 8th and 9th to go up 6-4. Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon allowed an Adam LaRoche homer in the 9th. The Braves had runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs, but once again Papelbon bore down. He struck out Ryan Langerhans, then induced pinch-hitter Matt Diaz to ground into a game-ending double play.

The Braves' Brian McCann once again extended his hitting streak. His 4th inning double gives him an association record 20-game streak. The Braves will take Monday off, before continuing their interleague action. They welcome Toronto for a three-game series starting Tuesday. John Smoltz (9-4, 2.11) will take the hill for the Braves. The Blue Jays tentatively list Ty Taubenheim (0-2, 11.40) as their starter.

The 2006 All-Star teams were announced. Chipper Jones will start at third base. Chipper is batting .292, with 11 HR and 37 RBI. First baseman Adam LaRoche was named as a reserve. LaRoche is hitting .286 with 15 HR and 50 RBI. He has tailed off recently, but his average has been over .300 most of the season. Pitcher John Smoltz was named to the team as well, giving the Braves three players on the squad.

A couple of deserving Braves did not make the team:

Second baseman Marcus Giles is hitting .322, with 3 HR and 31 RBi from the lead-off spot. He leads the league in doubles with 28 and has swiped 11 bases. He's been good in the field, committing only 4 errors. The only second baseman named to the squad is the starter, Philadelphia's Chase Utley. Utley is batting .267 on the season, with 14 homers and 57 RBI. Utley has only 2 stolen bases, 20 doubles and has committed 6 errors.

Rightfielder Jeff Francoeur was deserving, as well. Jeff is hitting .310, with 10 HR and 34 RBI. He has played in every game this season and is solid in the outfield. National League reserve outfielders include Colorado's Matt Holliday, Cincinnati's Adam Dunn, and St. Louis' Jim Edmonds.
