Sitrep: 12 September 1942
South Pacific Ocean Areas Command

Well...

ALOT has happened in the last week or so of game time. Swift has brought in about 60000 Japs to Tassafaronga, in addition he made several spectacular runs at Lizzy Field, causing a bit of damage, destroying planes and in general causing chaos.

However, these actions have cost him DEARLY.

some 2 or perhaps even 3 DOZEN transports have been sunk in and around Guadalcanal, as well as quite a few destroyers.

Swifts most severe loss in getting these troops landed, has been, the aforementioned Shokaku. She lies in her resting place approx 250 miles NE of Lizzy Field, where the SBDs of Halseys task force dealt her a death blow.

The enemy now has only 1 large carrier and perhaps a few small carriers.

Recon has spotted numerous ships at Shortland. Thus, in perperation for another "Swift Express" all USN and Allied shipping is leaving the Guadalcanal area. The carriers are heading SE towards Noumea for replenishing and rest, as well as for Halsey to take dirtect command of Sopac, and lend his considerable talents to the theater.[:D]

The situation, while not being as good as i want it, is satisfactory. and all though i failed to prevent Swifts landings, Lizzy Field is far from threatened.

Though that being said....

The Battle for Guadalcanal, is FAR from over....

Youll also notice the complete lack of (spotted) IJN submarine activity. ASW Hunter Killer Groups as well as PMs bombers, have taken a heavy toll of Swifts boats[:D]

thuis there shall be no repeat of Torpedo Junction[:)]

Looks like Admiral Marky is doing a good job... Though if I get it right from the above posts, Admiral Halsey is about to replace him as CinC SOPAC [:D]

Still a few comments. IMHO sinking the carrier(s) is not the biggest achievement. Sure, they are big point ships and a fleet in being less, but as you know the Japanese player can dish out some painful damage even without carriers - see our game. He has good surface units, a good set of mutually supporting bases and their LBA have teeth (torpedoes), relatively long range and can come in with fighter cover.

What impresses me more are the losses of transports you induced to Nippon. They are what will hurt your opponent over the entire game. How many AP and AK are lost in total ? And how many more damaged - there are no good repair facilities for Japan in this scenario. Did you count ?

And can you estimate whether your opponent managed to land ample supplies with his troops ? The road from Tasse is not very good... maybe you can just bypass the 60k troops - if I recall correctly, you know how to do that...

the Nippon player can to nothing against the 6k 4-eng bomber armada -even if he damages half of them in every raid they will come back on the next day....

Swift,

I do agree that Gualdecanal is difficult for the Jap player, but I do like to play it as that side after all (even if the success is not always given). It's a scenario with lots of quick action.

House rules can make the Jap player's life a lot easier (e.g. one against endless numbers of PT boat flotillas in one port, which spoil bombardment attacks), but it is interesting even without.

I do believe that one thing the Japanese player must not be in this scenario is aggressive. Lean back, prepare your defence and strike when opportunity calls. The CVs do not come with a complete set of planes and their pilot quality is not optimal, so they will not provide good service right from the beginning.

You are absolutely correct about the 4E armada - they can close down everything effectively and you have hardly any tool against them (although in a SOPAC game Zeroes with exp of about 80 seem to do not to bad, which does not mean shooting down many bombers but disrupting them sufficiently that they do not do much damage any more), and Nippon has neither enough engineers to repair quickly nor to expand bases sufficiently fast to be able to have one or two of them operative at a given point of time. In contrast to that, any base which can be borught to a level 4 AF will be extremely quickly by the SeaBees.

You have more handicaps apart from the 4E threat, the lack of Engineers: Your pilot supply is very limited - towards the end, one easily ends up with lots of exp 35 pilots, and so is your repair capacity.

Summing this up, there's a lot of problems to be solved by the Jap player right from the start - but in part that's what makes it fun.

If you want to have more time for a buildup and a slightly more favorable set of forces over the campaign, go for the SOPAC scenario. You may have the chance to secure an improved starting position there.

Just my 2cents...

BANZAI !

Well... you did not seem to need any help right now...

After all, I want some entertainment from this AAR - not one-sided slaughter but two-sided slaughter.
