Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

this boosts our morale! The attacking Japanese unit is kicked out of Koepang. I expect to see more troops showing up here (probably with heavy air and naval support) in a couple of weeks, but not before Java is cleared. If he comes before Java is cleared then he repeats the fault of probably coming with too few force, too early...

We´re closing in on the end of Jannuary and Steve complained again about my subs hurting him! [:D][:D] If you ever wonder if you´re doing good or bad, just wait for your opponent to complain about his losses and you know you´re doing well! [8D] My subs were real killers so far, no matter if the torps work or not!

more troops are brought in and the base will fall quickly now, but he has to bring his ships in danger with this reinforcements all the time as he has to go twice or even more often through sub infested water, not to talk about the fact that my airforce always gets more than one chance and that his ground troops suffer if he isn´t able to take the base...

it looks like Hortlund is bringing MASSIVE reinforcements to Malaya now as there are several big TFs reported heading into the area. My airforce is ready, wonder when the Japanese airforce begins to seriously try to close the airfield at Singapore. If not, he would be really suffering. But that´s again something where he´s just too late, he already suffered...

this hit rate was better... all those ships wouldn´t be in danger if he just once would have attacked his targets seriously, not everywhere at once far too early. But that is just playing in my cards. In the end Singapore will be lost, there´s no doubt, but at what cost to the Japanese?

empty Wake is lost... doubt he will come for Midway or any other Pacific atoll anymore. As it is now, I think he will just accomplish the conquer of the SRA and then it will be pretty much game over for further Japanese offensives. When I look at the losses he took so far against mostly lightly or not at all defended targets, then an attack further in the Pacific, on India or Australia would kill far more, troops, ships and planes...

Hortlund is massively reinforcing his troops on Malaya. There are coming in at least 4 big TFs. IMO again a couple of faults. All TFs move separately and so they can´t be long range capped all together, he should have set them to follow each other, or put them all in one TF. Not enough ASW forces at all, no hunter killer groups, even that he knows there are A LOT of subs in this area. He decided to knock out Singapore airfield but it´s already too late and at far too high costs with the low level attacks. The biggest fault IMO is the fact that he not just brings all the troops to Bangkok, or better Songkhia to have those troops marching down the railway, no, he sends them just around Singapore to land them at Johore Baru. That´s fine with me, there will be many more ships sunk and all in all the Malaya operation is super costly for the Japanese.

Hortlund said he´s happy with his ships going around Singapore, so we´re both happy. He thinks that he would lose only one or two ships... that´s something I definetely doubt...

Hortlund has spotted 8 AKs heading to Singapore coming from the South and lucky as he is he has no problems launching a lot of strikes at the single ship TFs... he´s very happy about it and cheers the sinking of 8 AKs in the next couple of days, but it only takes me 4 days on average to sink 8 ships with my subs! [:D][:D][:D] I can afford it, he can´t! It´s so simple... And I still lead in numbers of ships and points for sunken ships. That´s great at this date and you have to consider that all my trapped shipping from Manila was lost...

1000 ft seems a bit too low, even though my bombers are low exp and only carry 6 bombs in Nikmod (same as a B-25C [X(]). Nevertheless I will go up to 3000 ft in the future as I can already hear my opponent complain - which I would understand. On the other side, I only have 50 4E bombers on the whole map, so the effect isn´t that big...

SS Stingray, hits 4

Japanese ASW is getting better it seems. Stingray is at 12 sys dam and will retire to India. More and more subs will retire now, as the happy days are over and wear and tear from 2 months in action is now showing it´s effect. We will wait two or three weeks and then start another sub offensive... we expect a Japanese invasion of Koepang anytime soon, so we will need some subs to cause some trouble down there and perhaps also get a shot at something more valuable than a merchant...

RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy

1000 ft seems a bit too low, even though my bombers are low exp and only carry 6 bombs in Nikmod (same as a B-25C ). Nevertheless I will go up to 3000 ft in the future as I can already hear my opponent complain - which I would understand. On the other side, I only have 50 4E bombers on the whole map, so the effect isn´t that big...

Both sides should be able to benefit from hindsight without one side crying foul. It became apparent, even to the proponents of "high altitude precision bombing" that hitting a manuevering ship was a different kettle of fish than hitting a factory. Nikmod appears to provide a downside to low level bombing with both enhanced flak effectiveness and a low number of 4E bombers. If a player chooses to go in at 1000 ft against warships at 1000 ft he'll probably end up with a single digit number of 4E bombers on the map. But if your opp provides what to all appearances are ideal targets (single merchies) then I see no foul in going in low to get hits (can only get one per plane anyway).

Yes, I could agree to what you´re saying. Though I don´t know how my opponent is thinking about the matter. While I don´t think it was smart to send 3 TFs with 3 merchies each to that dot base 6 hexes away from Midway (lev 6 airfield) he could also think that this mission failed because of me setting my bombers to 1000 ft even though there´s the deadly flak and the reduced bomb load in Nikmod. He didn´t complain to me, but I know bombing altitude is a very sensible thing in PBEM and I don´t know how Hortlund is thinking about. I wouldn´t have thought about it until I´ve seen a 80% hit rate - yes, on already floating wrecks...

we moved our corps to Pakhoi, we will try to take the base tomorrow with a shock attack. There are 2 understrenght bgd (one has just been forced to retreat a couple of days ago) and a couple of construction btn so I expect to fight against lev 2 or 3 forts already. It´s a wooden hex and the IJA is flying massive ground support missions so it´s a gamble and not sure at all if we can ever take the base back...

Hortlund asked why those troops don´t retreat with a 14:1... [8|] well, those are the troops that marched 59 miles and then stopped marching further when the tk rgt used the rail road sling shot to cut them off in the South. So where should they retreat to? the air attacks probably showed their effect. You always need 2000 Chinese assault points if you want to kick 400 Japanese assault points out of the hex.

Hortlund made some very honourable suggestions with this turn. He suggested to see China only as a side show in the future if I would be willing to give up the bases on the railway in Central and South China. IMO this would deprive him of a very good position in 43-45 when he could use all those China Army divs to defend the continent against the invasion coming from India (if he doesn´t knock out India before! [:D]). I don´t know if I should agree as this would be a big present for me. It´s very honourable but wouldn´t that just deprive Hortlund of a favourable situation later on? Should we just fight it out with the inevitable result to lose Central and South China, perhaps all of China? While we know that it´s too easy to take China (compared to real life when people are arguing it wasn´t possible at all) it´s still not as easy as always spoken about...
