Well you know - USS Constitution was in commission all during WWII (through today), so she qualifies for this topic (technically [;)])

I don't know, but the thread is about the best looking ship of WW2...

Brian's right, she was in commission, and she was a beauty. In that regard, i would vote for Randolph, but thet's for another thred somewhere.

For this one, for the individual "Best Lookin" of War II, I gotta go with the Shigure, or whatver her DD class was. Line and sheer was sweet. Proportion, fore & aft was visually gratifying; proportion topsides to freeboard was within the golden ratio. Overall a classic example of a master designer at work. Beautiful boat!!!

Opps couldn't get the picture uploaded.
Well - it won't display -so the picture was Heavy Cruiser San Francisco and Light Cruiser Phoenix [:@]

The CL has got something about her, but this CA is butt-ugly! (I guess this is why you should never show people pictures of your kids or pets...[:D])
Well, I certainly won't say you're wrong - because it IS all in the eye of the beholder...but I think S.F. is a fine looking ship, business-like, symmetrical, and very dangerous.[:)]

Personally, of all the British heavy cruisers - I always liked Exeter (that same funky business-like look), as for Japanese - I go for Chokai and Haguro.

Maybe the prettiest overall (I'll agree with Mr T) the Italians....but the main thing is - everybody (including the Dutch and Russians,...and Germans) produced their own distinctive 'look'. As a ship artist - I love that...you'll all see it all in AE.

Can't wait Bro' [:)].

The earlier US Heavy Cruisers were damn ugly though. If you always like the girl who is a bit "different", then I guess they are for you [;)].

Not a bad list apart from the ugly French Broad. The one funneled Baltimore, or the two? Isabel was a yacht, she was not designed as a warship, so it is hardly fair to compare ships designed as such against her...

One of the most powerful battleship built just before WW II: the french Richelieu. Initially designed to fight against german or italian navies she finally went in the Pacific in 1944. A very specific design !

Nice looking ship Micke II, but that line of portholes down the side is an alarming sight on a BB...

Jean Bart's postwar completion made the design even snazzier looking. A lovely specimen. Too bad they didn't preserve one.

Yes it's a shame.
These ships were all scrapped in 1968. Here is the last photo taken in Toulon of battleship Jean-Bart together with WW II cruisers Suffren and Montcalm just before demolition.

An another picture of Jean Bart escaping from a french harbor in June 1940 24 hours before arrival of german troops.
At this time this ship was far from completion.

The ignorance of some politicians can make one really angry from time to time...

Turkey offered to sell the Goeben back to Germany in the 70th. Our politicians weren't interested because that's a sign for a violent germany history - so it was scrapped [:@]

My trip to England and discussing such issues with the currator on HMS Warrior helped me understand better the financial conditions and public attitude that led to many of these great ships going to the breakers. Its sad but even in the States, famous ships didn't escape it. Enterprise is our best, worst example.

The loss of Goeben in the 70's was truely tragic though again, one can understand the German government's hestitation to purchase what would be seen by some to be an example of militarism. Maybe they should have taken Mac's allowance of Mikasa to survive as an example. I'd have loved to walk Goeben's decks....the only survivor of the HSF's main battle force. Goosebumps!

At least USS Texas survives as the last example of the Dreadnought era.

you just can´t sell preserving warships to the public, at least not preserving every old warship. Just too expensive and money is desperately needed for a lot of other things.

Perhaps it's because of my profession that I see this so strict... - but this was the only Dreadnought from the High Seas Fleet... - It's simply a crime that this piece of history was put into pieces...

Problem there was England was essentially bankrupt at the end of WWI and was faced with a new naval arms race. The only use for her aging and worn out fleet at that point was as bargaining chips and resource to fuel her industries.

The US didn't see the Michigan any differently after all.

Am I the only one who thinks Jean Bart's successful withdrawal from St Nazaire was one of the great navigational feats of the war?

Yes, withdrawal seems to be a french profession ;) So nothing of a great feat about this [:'(]

And to be clear, just kidding [:)]

As far as armed yachts are considered, how about this one? Hitler's state yacht. I'm glad to say he barfed all the time he was aboard.
