Secretary Molotov:

We have a treaty in place which expires on 30 June 1945 (unless either side withdraws on 90 days notice). It does appear that the agreement serves the interests of both nations - which is the reason it was negotiated and agreed to and ratified in the first place. Like all good agreements it also provides for changes in the event of a supreme national emergency crisis - and if they don't occur - the agreement will be retained and even possibly renewed. There is something to communist theory about rational policy - and rational policy is rational wether or not one is a communist.

The measures in place at this time should permit safe passage of merchant shipping along the coast from Vladivostok to the Sea of Othosk - provided they don't cross Japanese straits. Similarly - from Kamchatka to Ul Kel should not be dangerous. Shipping entirely above the Russian Japanese border on Sakhalin - or in the Barents sea - is not at this time monitored - never mind contested. The bad incident occurred because of an incorrect range setting - and this was at first corrected by changing it - then by withdrawing the unit from a front line base altogether. There is no pressing need for forward air bases right on the Soviet frontier - and they exist only as contingency airfields. In some conditions even air support elements might be withdrawn where mobile (obviously not when static).

The problem of crossing the Kurils is more difficult - and the procedure should be - request passage on a certain date - and then only implement the plan if an official message is in hand saying the passage is safe.
From that date all air patrols will stand down - until the passage is completed. This of course should not be exploited by USN submarines - which would spoil the arrangement. But we are not willing to assume a problem before one occurs. Since we screwed up - and lost face and honor and presumably trust - taking some risks in recompense is appropriate.

Moving troops in winter may be a problem in Siberia - and moving them along trails (or worse where there are no trails) is slow in the best of times. The intent is much more important than the details of what has happened already. Russia has a thin band of development along the Trans Siberian RR - and that line runs right along the frontier - so it is not necessary to have everything moved from the front - or moved immediately. Our measures were taken to communicate intent as much as to trigger reciprocal moves. Our plate is full - so is yours - and we both understand it would be dangerously inconvenient to have to fight another significant opponent. We don't want to - and it is hard to imagine any more clear way to say that than to move forces from the front - and in some cases - from the theater. If Kwangtung Army contingency planning was right - and 13 or 14 divisions are required to fight a limited offensive to Chita - then having only 9 or 10 in the area should say "that plan isn't going to be implemented any time soon."

We had to reconstuct the game due to file corruption. Two days were redone. The only important change is Moulmein only reduced fortifications to zero instead of falling - which it does in this new turn.

2 Jan 1942 (Hawaii) 3 Jan (Far East)

The night turn began with continued clearing of the gigantic minefield at HK.

CLAA Ioshima - which has AS weapons - missed Dutch sub KXIV at Brunei. She was bringing in a convoy.

I-166 torpedoed AK Murada at Brisbane. 6 escorts counterattacked - scoring one hit. Later they attacked again - taking three more hits which caused fires. Murada is badly damaged.

CA Takao and CL Naka bombarded Midway. 5 CD sgits fired with one hit on Naka. 4 casualties and 1 port supply hit.

USN sub S-41 attacked a MSW TF at Saigon. Three MSW units counterattacked. No hits on either side.

The day turn began with an ineffective raid on Magwe Burma by 10 Blenheims.

A JAAF raid on Pucheng China caused 12 more resource hits. Units here are still bright yellow - which I cannot explain.
Another on the ROC 23rd Field Army caused 15 casualties.
Another on the ROC 12th Field Army caused 65 casualties and 1 gun lost.
Another on the Red 15th Guerilla regiment was ineffective.

54 Zeros, 5 Petes, 1 Rufe and 54 Me-109s escorted 3 Ki-48s, 17 Kates and 10 Ki-49s in a raid on PH targeting ships in port (to add more damage) and airfields (to surpress bomber flights). One of the Ki-49s was on recon. 16 US fighters of 3 types on CAP. The Kates went in too low - by mistake - and took 9 kills. The level bombers went in at 14,000 above the medium AAA - and 3 were damaged. 18 enemy aircraft destroyed on the ground or in the air. 17 other hits - but no hits on ships.

28 Ki-48s and 25 Ki-51s, escorted by 28 Ki-27s, out of Pisanalouke, caused 25 casualties to the British Army Second Burma Brigade at Moulmein. 1 Ki-27 lost to ground fire (it was bombing).
12 more Ki-48s and 13 Ki-30s out of Bangkok hit the same unit immediately afterward. 32 casualties and 2 guns lost. 1 Ki-30 lost.

12 Ki-51s, 9 Ki-27s and 9 Claudes out of Aparri - which is a large airfield now - hit Clark - causing 25 casualties to the Philippine Army 71st Division.
Immediately afterward 38 Bettys and Nells and 53 Ki-48s and 12 Ju-88s out of Takao hit the same unit - causing 71 casualties and 3 guns lost.

23 Nells out of Wake hit the USMC 6th Defense Battalion at Midway - did no damage - suffered 4 bombers damaged - and were demoralized.

Ro-39 missed ML Rigel at Balikpapan.

6212 Japanese attacked 3190 Americans at Midway - achieved 1:1 odds - and reduced fortifications from 3 to 2. 92 Japanese casualties and 7 guns lost. 61 Allied casualties and 2 guns lost.

A naval infantry battalion attacked the First Viet Minh Battalion at Dien Bien Phu - this latter just forming up and very weak with just 165 men - achieved 3:1 odds - and the VC retreated to Luangprabang, Laos. 4 Japanese casualties.

Japanese ground bombardment at Manila caused 8 Allied casualties.

5814 Japanese in three small parties attacked 2862 Allies in the British Army 2nd Burma Brigade at Moulmein. 7:1 odds in spite of fort level 1. The enemy retreated down the main RR line. 72 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost. 39 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost, 1 vehicle lost.

There is no supply sink at Clark - this is a regular land battle in flat (and rare malaria free) terrain. We will re engage in two days with the third RCT of 4th division reinforcing. Part of these RCTs are still en route to Luzon.

Japanese ground bombardment caused 77 casualties at KL.

25 000 (should be starving but seem not to be) Chinese at Pucheng attacked a brigade at Ichang - failed to achieve odds - Fort Level 3 -
204 Allied casualties 10 guns lost. 167 Japanese casualties 7 guns lost.

Allied bombardment at Midway was ineffective.

4 Jan 1942 (Hawaii) 5 Jan (Far East)

The night turn began with 2 IJN DD detecting and clearing mines at Midway.
Also continuing landings by the 7th "electric" engineer regiment with assault engineers.
85 CD shots fired - 7 hits scored on AK Katsuragi Maru and DD Yugure.
29 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost. 11 Allied casualties.
These ships will run for Hawaii to repair - lest fires and flooding become overwhelming. A few engineers remain on board.
If need be they will drop off at Layson Island or French Frigate Shoals.
Later in the night more mines were cleared, more troops landed, 24 more CD shots fired but no hits. 34 Japanese casualties to beach defenses.

An Allied AP was sent to pick up troops in a pocket NE of Singapore on Malaya. Five subs were sent to intercept. Three made it all the way to port - but the ship already had left. I-9 cought her - Togian - on the surface and sank her with 6 shells from her dual 5.5 inch gun mounting. 73 Allied casualties and 5 guns lost to troop cargo. We will leave the subs in place - and add more anti naval air units - because another transport is inbound.

Ro-28 torpedoed and sank AK Minjak in the Sunda Strait.

USN sub Catchelot missed AO Nissan Maru SE of Kwajalein.

The day turn began with 20 Bettys, 2 Ki-48 recon planes, 11 Ki-27 escorts and 11 Claudes on top cover raiding Cebu. 4 P-43 on CAP: 1 shot down. 1 Allied casualty, 1 gun lost, 11 airbase related hits.

8 Ki-48s and 9 Ki-49s raided PH targeting ships in port and airfields: CLAA Utah took 2 hits from 50 kg bombs. 2 casualties, 1 gun lost and 3 hits to airfields. 4 bombers destroyed - 3 of them Ki-49s in spite of being above the medium AAA - something these not yet in production aircraft can sustain.

3 ROCAF SB-2s failed to harm the 104th Draft B Division in China. 2 Me-109s on CAP failed to interfere.
6 more failed equally - but damaged one of the Me-109s.

63 Ki-48s and 27 Ki-27s as fighter bombers caused 160 casualties and 2 guns lost to the ROC 23rd Field Army.
16 Ki-30s caused 10 casualties to the ROC 12th Field Army.
12 Ki-51s failed to harm the ROC 48th Field Army. 1 Ki-51 shot down.
6 Ki-48s failed to harm the ROC 52nd Guerilla Regiment.

27 Ki-27s as fighter bombers failed to harm the Philippine Army 71st Division on Luzon.
12 Ki-51s and 9 more Ki-27s caused 27 casualties and 1 gun lost to the same unit.
55 Ki-48s, 12 Ju-88s, 6 Bettys and 21 Nells caused 25 casualties and 1 gun lost to the same unit - these flying out of Takao Formosa.

15 Kates from the CVE force caused 12 casualties to the Philippine Constabulary 3rd Regiment on Jolo.

14 Nells from Wake caused 12 casualties and 2 guns lost to the USMC 6th Defense Battalion on Midway. 4 bombers damaged.

The first strike on the RAF No 2 Forward Air Station at Three Pagoda's Pass caused 10 casualties.
Another failed to harm the tiny remnant of the small support unit which has been retreating for nearly a month.
Later in the day a demi brigade attacked - achieved 178:1 odds - and this unit finally surrendered - opening up the LOC between Thailand and Burma. Bombing had reduced it to 0 troops - whatever that means.

15 Nells out of Davao put 2 bombs into BC de Zeven Provincien and missed CL Tromp near Manado Celebes. We have assigned many units to intercept this force headed for Borneo. Two subs for the front door, two if it reverses and runs for Ambon, a CVE force and air strikes from Brunei, Davao, Legaspi and Davao might get a shot. Not sure what they were doing? Evacuating troops?

DD Hurusame detected and missed Dutch sub KCVIII at Jolo.

Shock attack at Midway by 6777 troops vs 3092 Allies resulted in reduction of fortifications to 0 by the engineers. Still 1:1 odds.
111 Japanese casualties, 5 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. Assault units not demoralized - so we attack again tomorrow. 69 Allied casuallties, 3 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. A damaged battlecruiser refueled and rearmed to lend fire support if need be - in about two days.

43 000 Japanese attacked 25 000 isolated Chinese at Pucheng. The hex has lost its supply source due to bombardment - but they are still bright green - and no odds were achieved. 839 casualties, 29 guns lost. 178 chinese casualties and 1 gun lost. A pox on em. We will let em rot for a while.

Japanese ground bombardment at Manila cost 2 casualties and 1 gun lost. Hardly worth it.

Japanese ground bombardment at KL caused 51 Allied casualties - better.

Japanese ground bombardment at Clark caused 27 casualties.

Allied ground bombardment at Midway was ineffective.

142 paras of the First Airborne Brigade took Bhamo Burma - cutting the Burma Road- and depriving China of 500 supply points per day.

Elements of two Airborne SNLFs hit Thursday Island - one flying out of Hollandia - the other out of Rabaul - with Zero CAP from Lae.
432 hit the ground - vs 869 defenders. 5:1 odds Fort Level 2. The Torres Strait Defense Force surrendered. 46 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost. 991 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost. How to interpret the data? There are more than one gun in the unit. And why 869 defenders but 991 surrendering?? Seems a bit odd. Also - there are infantry, machine guns, light and medium CD guns - so why 5:1 odds vs an ultra light infantry attack force with almost no guns when the defense was fortified???? Good die rolls I guess.

3 B-10s missed CA Nachi in that force. 1 damaged. 1 of 2 Me-109s on CAP damaged. 1 Pete CAP ineffective.

9 RTAF Ki-30s caused 8 casualties and 1 gun lost to the RAF 221st Forward Air Station in Burma.

6700 Japanese still failed to achieve odds at Midway - 3000 defenders - 72 Japanese casualties 4 guns lost - 83 US casualties 2 guns lost. Losses indicate bad supplies for the Allies - and so Midway should fall soon.

4400 Japanese captured Jolo from 1800 defenders. 2:1 odds - the enemy retreating to Zamboanga. 455 Japanese casualties 13 guns lost. 44 Allied casualties.

61 000 Japanese captured Nanchang from 14 000 Chinese at Nanchang. Never be discouraged by bad combat results if the fundamentals are on your side - keep up the pressure. 518 Japanese casualties, 11 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 1078 Chinese casualties, 27 guns lost.

Another battle revealed 6100 Japanese attacking 7100 Chinese - 609 Japanese casualties, 7 guns lost - 37 Allied casualties.

6 January 1942 (Hawaii) 7 January (Far East)

The night turn began with mine clearing at HK. That was the entire night turn.

The day turn began with 4 Ki-48s, escorted by 7 Zeros, and in company with 2 Ju-88 recon bombers, raided Tarakan. 6 Dutch Buffalos on CAP. 2 airfield related hits. Two bombers.

An unusual recon of PH had 3 Petes escorting 1 Ki-49 recon bomber. No CAP.

A JAAF raid on the ROC 23rd Field Army caused 19 casualties.
Another on the ROC 12th Field Army caused 38 casualties and 2 guns lost.
Another on the ROC 85th Field Army caused 50 casualties and 1 gun lost.

6 Ki-48s and 24 Ki-27s attacked the Indian Army 44th Brigade in Malaya causing 37 casualties and 1 gun lost - no CAP.

50 000 Japanese attacked an equal number of Allies at KL. 1:1 odds, fort level 0. 209 Japanese casualties and 10 guns lost. 308 Allied casualties, 14 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. This casualty ratio indicates the position is weakening.

45 000 Chinese attacked a brigade of 17 000 Japanese at Wuchow Central China. 3:1 odds, fort level 2. Fortifications reduced to level 1. 541 Japanese casualties and 9 guns lost. 348 Chinese casualties and 1 gun lost.

4700 Japanese of the 4th Independent Mixed Regiment (reinforced by elements of the 5th Independent Mixed Brigade) attacked the RAF 221st Forward Air Station NE of Moulmein. 94:1 odds. 4 Allied casualties and the unit retreated NE up the RR. Having entered Burma by airlift - all Japanese units are partial and incomplete. These units are the tip of the spear - with the rest of the units strung out on the RR and road system SW of them - or still airlifting into airfields on that route.

Japanese ground bombardment at Angelus City/Clark AAF ccaused 51 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost - also 3 Japanese casualties to counterbattery fire.

8 Jan 1942 (Hawaii) 9 Jan (Far East)

The night turn began with continuing landings at Layson Island. The special 7th Electric Engineer Regiment is offloading to insure they are not lost if the ship sinks. They will go back to Midway on fast transports for what hopefully will be the final push.

An Allied ASW TF detected, attacked and twice hit Ro-35 - she had retired from Darwin to evade this very group but it followed her. She was going to stake out Jolo - but now will evade hard - and run for Palau. A relief sub departed Palau for Jolo yesterday.

Midway was bombarded by BC Amagi - without effect in the dark.

The day turn began with a JAAF raid on Pucheng China - 2 resource hits.
Another on the Miscelaneous Southern Factions Sixth Division caused 70 casualties and 2 guns lost.

42 JAAF bombers of 2 types caused 70 casualties and 2 guns lost (the same as above but it isn't typo) to the First Burma Brigade. 1 bomber destroyed, 3 damaged by AAA fire.
15 Bettys followed up causing 26 more casualties and 1 gun lost. 1 damaged.
Another raid by 28 more caused only 7 casualties to the same unit. 1 lost.

6 Ki-48s caused 18 casualties to the Indian Army 45th Brigade in Malaya.
6 stragglers caused 7 more casualties to the same unit. All these out of Singora.

BC Amagi tried to shell Midway again - failed to do anything - but was driven off in flames by 12 CD shots - of which 6 hit!!! There is still sting left in those Marine guns.

A Japanese bombardment attack on the Field Army on the Indochina border caused 8 Chinese casualties and 7 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost.

Japanese ground bombardment at Manila was ineffective.

Japanese ground bombardment at KL caused 45 casualties, 1 gun lost, 1 vehicle lost.

Japanese ground bombardment at Clark caused 62 casualties and 5 guns lost.

6900 Japanese captured Xuwin South China from 3443 Allies. These surrendered as they had no retreat options. 16 Japanese casualties. 3666 Chinese casualties and 49 guns lost. Note the discrepency in numbers - 3443 defended but 3666 surrendered - whatever that may mean?
Maybe disabled squads don't count for combat at full value - but do when they surrender (troop count wise)?

A major fragment of an RCT from 33rd Division captured Toungoo Burma from the First Burma Brigade - 4761 vs 2410 - and the unit retreated East along the rail line. 46 Allied casualties and 2 guns lost. The unit had been pounded by air strikes. Tomorrow Rangoon gets the same treatment - also by a major 33rd Division RCT.

9 Jan 1942 (Hawaii) 10 Jan (Far East)

The night turn began with ML Pro Patria detecting and trying to engage I-124 - very dumb as it lacks proper ASW sensors or weapons.
I-124 evaded, then in the next impulse, reengaged, torpedoing and sinking the minelayer.

Next - a heavily escorted transport group at the Southern tip of New Guinea - running in supplies and engineers to Thursday Island and intended to take off the airborne assault troops - detected and attacked and missed USN sub Skipjack - the first enemy sub detected in this area. Flying boats out of Rabaul were put on ASW duty. Zeros were flown to Lae to fly LRCAP over this TF - which might be at risk to bomber attacks from PM or points in Australia.

The day turn began with a JAAF strike on Pucheng China - 3 resource hits. This location is down to 10 functional resource centers = 300 supplies per month - not much for the several Field Armies feeding off it.
Another caused 24 casualties to the Red 24th Guerilla Regiment in North China. This unit disappeared - resumably because it has marched out of the hex.
Another caused 52 casualties and 1 gun lost to the ROC 52nd Guerilla Regiment.

6 Ki-27s out of Taiping swept KL - but it no longer is operating aircraft - so no CAP was encountered.

21 Nells and 5 Ki-48s escorted by 21 Me-109 "Mikes" (the official PTO US codeword) raided PH. No CAP. Lots of FLAK. 2 Nells destroyed, 6 damaged. 5 airfield related and 1 port related hits - but no hits on the several (presumably damaged) ships in port.

3 Ki-48s failed to harm the Indian Army 45th Brigade in Malaya. 8 Ki-27s escorted them.

8 Ki-48s escorted by 29 Ki-27s out of Legaspi caused 4 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Philippine Army 71st Division at Angelus City/Clark.
Immediately afterward 11 Ju-88s caused 20 casualties and 1 more gun lost to the same unit. This out of Aparri.
Next a strike out of Takao 12 more Ju-88s, 5 Ki-48s, 21 Nells and 35 Army Kates (Ki-47s) escorted by 46 Zeros caused 14 more casualties (pretty low for all those bombers = bad die roll) to the same unit.

9 Blenheims out of India caused 10 casualties and 1 gun lost to an element of the First Raiding Brigade at Schwebo in Burma.
16 more failed to cause any casualties at all.

A Japanese ground bombardment attack by a reserve light artillery regiment on the Indochina border caused 9 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Chinese Field Army which came out of the mountains.

A Japanese ground bombardment attack at Manila caused 4 casualties and 2 guns lost.

Undefended Layson Island near Midway was captured by an element of the 7th "Electric" Engineer Regiment.

Japanese ground bombardment at KL caused 69 casualties and 1 gun lost.

A Japanese shock attack on the 83 survivors of an RAF Forward Air Station on the rail LOC in central Burma caused the unit to retreat into the jungle with 21 casualteis. This frees the entire rail LOC permitting NE-SW communication from Southern Burma to Magwe - and units are now assigned to move to Rangoon to reduce it - to consolidate the airborne and its ground support at Moulmein - and to form up the formerly scattered 33rd Division as a tip of the spear to move on Mandalay.

16 000 Japanese attacked 15 000 Allies at Clark - Fort Level 1 - no odds - 315 Japanese casualties, 17 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost - 150 Allied casualties - 4 guns lost.

31 000 Chinese captured Ichang China from 5500 Japanese. 11:1 odds, Fort Level 2. 236 Japanese casualties, 14 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 459 Chinese casualties. Japanese brigade retreat to Hankow.

6 000 Japanese conducted a preliminary assault at Rangoon to measure the situation. 15 000 defenders. Fort Level 3. No odds. 21 Japanesee casualties, 4 guns lost. 40 Allied casualties indicate a weak position. We will reinforce and attack again in a few days - after troops have time to move in - and the defenders to suffer more attrition due to lack of supplies and heavy bombing raids.

10 January 1942 (Hawaii) 11 Jan (Far East)

The night turn began with I-9 at Singapore (returning from the Indian Ocean area) shelling AK Valentijn with her dual 5.5s. 6 shell hits - fire - heavy damage.

DM Hinsustan detected sub laid mines at Tilletjap.

The day turn began with a JAAF air raid on Chengsha Central China. 1 P-51 destroyed, 2 damaged. One ancient I-153 biplane on CAP. 9 airfield related hits - and the biplane lived.
A JNAF sweep of Liuchow South China found 6 P-43s on CAP - and killed 5 of them.
Another JAAF raid caused 33 casualties and 1 gun lost to the ROC 31st Group Army.

6 Ki-48s failed to harm the Philippine 71st Division at Clark.
20 more came in immediately after and did better: 17 casualties and 1 gun lost.

20 Vals from a wing of KB caused 46 casualties and 2 guns lost to the 115th Base Force on the Northernmost of the lower Hawaiian Islands: Lihue.
42 more Vals hit a RCT of the 24th Division in the same hex - causing 28 casualties and 1 gun lost.
6 Ki-46s out of Lahaina caused 4 more casualties and 1 gun lost to the same unit.

8 Blenheims caused 8 casualties and 1 gun lost to a forward element of the First Raiding Brigade in Burma.
9 more followed up - and did not harm at all.

ROCAF made an unusually effective anti shipping strike at Pakhoi South China: 15 bombers of 2 types scored 4 hits with 100 pound bombs on 3 transports - and missed 2 others. 2 APs on fire. 15 casualties and 1 gun lost to troop cargo.

13 Bettys put a 250 kg bomb into AK Benkalis at Zamboanga. No troop casualties indicates none had loaded. The Philippine Scouts 3rd Regiment is there.

I-155 shelled, torpedoed and sank AK Bicol at the Northeast tip of Ceram Island.

6 Fujimoto class BB shelled Lihue - 148 casualties, 6 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost - 17 other hits. No CD shots fired.

The enemy held his fire for the landing TF - and fired 85 CD shots at it - scoring 2 hits on CA Chikuma and 1 more on DD Kuroshio - missing CL Agano and DD Hatsukaze. 365 casualties and 1 gun lost to beach defenses (by the RCT of the 5th Division which is landing). 49 Allied casualties to counterbattery fire or beach assault.

Japanese ground bombardment on a Field Army on the Indochina Border was ineffective.

Japanese ground bombardment at Manila caused 8 casualties and 1 gun lost.

Japanese ground assault at KL failed to achieve odds. 274 Japanese casualties, 13 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 120 Allied casualties, 5 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. KL is defended in strength by this player - and its defense is very different from cases where it is abandoned to the static units.

Japanese ground assault at Wuchow China - NW of Canton - achieved 1:1 odds for 45 000 vs 17 000 troops - Fort Level 1. Fortifications reduced to zero. 482 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 72 Chinese casualties and 3 guns lost.

For reasons unclear a tiny naval landing party attacked 5 defending units at Baguio/Balinta Pass. It didn't work of course. 154 Japanese casualties, 7 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. I certainly did not order that attack and I did not know AI might do such a thing?

11 January 1942 (Hawaii) 12 Jan (Far East)

The night turn began iwth continuing landings at Lihue - tne NE of the lower Hawaiian Islands. 8 CD shots missed CL Abukuma heading the transport TF. 55 casualties to beach defenses.

Mine clearing occurred at Molokai.

Near Jolo AK Benkalis tried to run past - after doing somethign at Zamboanga (but not getting troops). She was sunk by two ex ROC CLs, 3 DDs and 3 PC units. 43 five inch and three inch hits.

Ro-28 torpedoed and sank AK Van Outhoom at Singapore. Another transport torpedoed yesterday sank SE of Singapore.

A JAAF strike caused 13 resource hits at Pucheng China - it was the first event of the day turn.

A long series of attacks on Singapore by bombers mainly resulted in bombers lost or damaged by the massive AA defenses there.
The first of these was by 20 Nells escorted by 41 Zeros - 9 Buffalos on CAP - 6 destroyed - 3 Nells lost - 4 more damaged - only 1 runway hit.

Another series of attacks on Cebu went better - no AAA oposition. The first of these by 19 Bettys caused 8 runway hits. 3 P-43s and 3 Ki-43s achieved nothing.
9 Ju-88s came in next with 24 Bettys - 9 Ki-43s on escort - 1 of the 3 P-43s shot down. 11 runway hits.
12 more came in next - with no escort - and got 10 hits related to the airfields.
26 Bettys and Nells came in on a long range strike - also evaded the 2 remaining fighters - and got 13 more runway hits.

3 Ki-49s out of Lahaina failed to harm anything on Lihue Island.

27 Ki-27s tried to bomb the Indian Army 6th Brigade in Malaya- 6 were shot down by AAA or 3 Buffalos - 3 more Ki-27s damaged - no damage to targets.

8 Ki-21s caused 4 casualties at Rangoon. 41 Ki-27s on escort watched.

10 Ki-51s failed to harm the Viet Minh First Battalion at Dien Bien Phu.

20 Ki-48s out of Legaspi caused 17 casualties to the Philippine 71st Reserve Division at Clark.

64 Vals caused 29 casualties and 1 gun lost to the USN 115th Base Force on Lihue Island. 1 Val damaged.
6 Ki-48s out of Lahaina followed up - but did no harm to the same unit.

3 B-18s out of Oahu missed an unidentified ship near Hawaii. They damaged 1 Zero on the way in. 80 fighters of 3 types on CAP destroyed them all.

12 Ju-88s based right next to Singapore put 11 fifty kg bombs into AK Van Outhoom - already doomed by 2 torpedo hits - but it was the coup de grace.

Japanese ground bombardment at Manila caused 13 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost.

A different Japanese ground bombardment caused 11 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost, 17 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost in central Malaya.
Japanese ground bombardment at KL caused 60 Allied casualties, 4 guns lost.

A Japanese naval landing party attacked the tiny Viet Minh First Battalion at Dien Bien Phu - losing 5 casualties and 1 gun driving it into the jungle.

7000 Japanese troops in a RCT of 5th Division captured Lihue on the first attack. 39 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost. Allied units retreated to a tiny offshore island with a single plantation on it. [This island was site of the strangest and smallest "battle" of PTO - a single IJN pilot, a local Japanese accountant and his wife terrorized the island for several days - until the Hawaiians killed two of them - under circumstances no one quite understands.]

12 Jan 1941 (Hawaii) 13 Jan (Far East)

The night turn began with mineclearing at Molokai. One DE hit a mine - but the field was cleared - so ships can safely approach once again.

I-9 detected AK Van Hentz at Singapore - and put four 25mm rounds into her. This may have set up an air strike later in the day on the same ship.

The day turn began with a sweep by 48 Zeros of Hengchow. 8 I-16s on CAP. 4 shot down.
48 other Zeros swept Changsha - but no CAP to engage.
A JAAF strike on Pucheng caused 6 resource hits.
Another caused 78 casualties and 2 guns lost to the ROC 31st Group Army.
Another caused 79 casualties to the Red 15th Guerilla Regiment.
Yet another 19 casualties and 1 gun lost to the same unit.

8 Ki-48s and 10 Zeros forward based in Malaya caused 4 airfield related hits at Singapore. 2 bombers lost. No CAP.

23 Bettys and 12 Ju-88s out of Davao hit Cebu - with 8 Ki-43 escorts. 7 airfield related hits. No CAP.

15 ROCAF SB-2s caused 28 casualties and 1 gun lost to the 38th Pack Division in China.

8 Ki-21s and 41 Ki-43s out of Moulmein caused 19 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Rangoon Fortress Unit.
10 more from Chiang Mai Thailand failed to do damage at all. They had light loads due to the airfield level.
51 more from Pisinalouke - now a Level 4 Airfield - caused 19 casualties and 1 vehicle lost to the same unit.

A combined air strike of 33 Army Kates (Ki-47s), 10 Ju-88s (D4Y4s), 20 Bettys and 7 Ki-48s caused 14 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Philippine Army 71st Division at Clark. 1 bomber lost, 2 damaged.
16 Nells came in next but failed to do harm. 1 bomber damaged.
20 Nells came in next, 48 casualties, 4 guns lost to the same unit.

48 Zeros swept Hengchow - 6 I-16s on CAP - but they all bugged out before any were lost.

20 Bettys escorted by 8 Zeros 'went downtown' to Singapore and sank AK van Hentz with four 250 kg bombs.

Japanese ground bombardment on the Indochina Border caused 10 Japanese and 16 Chinese casualties. A Chinese field army - probably the 31st - has come out of the mountains and is a problem for the tiny Japanese forces - which are assembling to drive it back to Nanning - the theater objective.

Japanese ground bombardment at KL caused 21 Allied casualties.

Japanese ground bombardment at Manila caused 44 casualties and 2 guns lost for the Allies.

22 000 Japanese attacked 15 000 Allies at Clark - 1:1 odds - fortififications reduced to zero - 608 Japanese casualties, 16 guns lost, 279 Allied casualties, 5 guns lost.

7300 airmobile Japanese troops attacked 16 000 Allies at Rangoon - 3:1 odds - Fort Level 3- fortifications reduced to 2 - 64 Japanese casualties, 2 guns lost - 73 Allied casualties 1 gun lost. The enemy is out of supply and weak.

Undefended Buna was captured by JNAF airborne assault.

Ro-34 torpedoed AK Tomohon at Muntok (Banka Island).

TF 5 landed troops at Niihu Island - where two enemy units have retreated to. 118 casualties to beach defenses. This island is a privately owned plantation which was the site of a micro "battle" a few days after PH - between a downed Japanese pilot and two Japanese civilians on one side - and unarmed Hawiians on the other.
Pre dawn landings suffered 199 more casualties.

TF 10 landed troops at Gasmata (New Britain). 142 casualties.

An RN MSW unit detected and swept sub laid mines at Soerabaja.

Ro-46 attacked and missed AK Prins van Orange at Darwin.

The day turn began with a JAAF attack on the Red 15th Guerilla Regiment in North China: 14 casualties.
Another caused 14 more to the same unit.
Another caused 7 to the Szechuan 20th Field Army in South China.
Another caused 81 casualties and 4 guns lost to the same unit.
Another caused 71 casualties and 2 guns lost to the ROC 48th Field Army.

10 Ki-21s failed to harm the Rangoon Force Fortress. 41 Ki-27s were escorting.
27 Ki-51s did better - causing 10 casualties and 1 vehicle lost to the same unit. But 5 were lost to AAA.
18 JAAF bombers of 3 types did better still - causing 19 casualties to the same unit.
The 10 Ki-21s tried again - failed to harm the target again - and lost one of their number to AAA.
22 more caused 3 casuaties to the same unit.

38 JAAF bombers of 3 types caused 18 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Philippine 71st Division at Clark.
9 Me-109s code named Mike and designated A9M1 by IJN were escorting. 3 bombers damaged.

A Japanese ground bombardment attack in China caused 9 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost, 20 Chinese casualties, 1 gun lost.
5400 Japanese attacked 7000 Chinese in South China - causing them to retreat - isolating Pucheng. 67 Japanese casualties, 2 guns lost. 38 Chinese casualties, 1 gun lost. 3:1 odds due to supplies.

Japanese ground bombardment at Manila caused 31 Allied casualties and 3 guns lost.
Japanese ground bombardment at Clark caused 9 Allied casualties.

50,000 Japanese attacked 49,000 Allies at KL. No odds. Fort Level 3. 215 Japanese casualties, 7 guns lost, 1 gun lost. 103 Allied casualties, 6 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost.

7300 Japanese attacked 15 000 Allies at Rangoon. 2:1 odds. Fort Level 2. Fortifications reduced to 1. 38 Japanese casualties, 2 guns lost.
47 Allied casualties. Allied supplies are critical.

14 Jan 1942 (Hawaii) 15 Jan (Far East)

The night turn began with landings on Midway Island (the rest of the assault engineer regiment). 398 CD shots fired, 23 hits on 4 ships (CLAA Tatsuta had to be scuttled - too far to reach port). 104 Japanese casualties, 1 vehicle lost. 35 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost.

The day turn began with a sweep of Bacolod Ilolo by 5 Zeros. No CAP.

A JAAF attack on the Red 15th Guerilla Regiment caused 21 casualties.
Another caused 6 more casualties to the same unit.
Another caused 8 casualties to the Szechuan 20th Field Army.

15 Bettys caused 15 casualties to the Philippine 71st Reserve Division at Clark.

35 000 Japanese attacked 3 units with 4473 Allied troops at Johore Bahru - driving them back into the pocket in SE Malaya. 17:1 odds.
147 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 178 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost.

7300 Japanese captured Midway in an shock attack. 6:1 odds. 99 Japanese casualties, 5 guns lost. 4035 Allied casualties, 9 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost.

A Japanese bombardment attack caused 26 Allied casualties on the Indochina border.

A Japanese bombardment attack at KL caused 31 casualties and 1 gun lost.

12 000 Japanese in about three RCT packages captured Rangoon from 19 466 Allies. 40 Japanese casualties, 3 guns lost. 12 Allied guns lost, 442 vehicles lost.

Undefended Gasmata New Britain was captured by a naval landing party - which has come all the way down the back of New Guinea capturing ports.
