Air Warfare

Post by ny59giants »

28 Jan 42 Stuart wrote that he feels the air war attrition will be increasing. I think it will be, too.

ASW/Subs: Another day of peace and quite. [:)]

Burma: My planes have only to travel 60 miles to hit Rangoon. I have 26 A6M2 Zero (1) and 13 Ki-43-Ic Oscar (2) as escort for 27 Ki-21 Sally, 31 Ki-48 Lily, and 9 Ki-49 Helen against 12 Hurricane IIb (8) on CAP. I get only 23 hits on the airbase.

Malaya: The Imperial Guards Division at Singapore sees the British again. 4 Hurricane IIb escort 3 Blenheim I. My LBA at Johore Bahru fail to attack Singapore for the second straight day. [:@] The weather is "suppose" to be rain tomorrow, so i have stoop down the whole base to try to reset. Before any one mentions my leaders, they have already been changed. [;)]

Borneo: From Soerabaja, I see Balikpapan as the target of 16 B-17D Fortress flying in at 24000 feet and my CAP of 3 A6M2 Zero and 11 Ki-43-Ic Oscar fail to bring any of the big brutes down. I'm use to being on the other end of this equation and I don't like it already. [:(]

Philippines: At Naga, 8 Ki-43-Ic Oscar escort 9 B5N Kate and 76 Ki-48 Lily and get only 3 runway hits. As soon as the SNLF is done being transported by my 3 chutai of Topsy, they will pick up the two construction still at Appari to get the AF to size 4 sooner.

Notes: KB is sitting idle at Rabaul. I have a few TF with troops for Lae and Buna I was going to escort that have yet to make Truk as I don't have enough airpower in this area of map. Milne Bay is 1(3) AF and building up with my sole Zero daitai there. I'm thinking of sending them over to add support to Java area.

Bataan Falls!!

Post by ny59giants »

29 Jan 42

ASW/Subs: Nothing again, but he is busy moving them around from Java to Kendari.

Burma: Nothing! Weather permitting, the LB at Moulmein will hit Rangoon again while tanks and the Burma Area HQ continue to make their way here.

Malaya: At Singapore, the Imperial Guards Division is attacked by 4 Blenheim escorted by 2 Hurricane IIb inflicting 29 casualties. My LBA at Johore Bahru will hit the AF while the LCUs launch another deliberate attack tomorrow.

Borneo: Nothing! I'm loading up the 23 Mixed Bde at Saigon for Pontianak. Balikpapan has the Kates from Makassar moved in plus another daitai of Zero.

Philippines: At Naga, 8 Ki-43-Ic Oscar escort in the daily "milk run" of 9 B5N Kate and 73 Ki-48 Lily. I get 5 runway hit, but the main purpose is to slow down the building of forts. I diverted 15 Ki-49 Helen to hit the ground units at Bataan, Corregidor M Fortress, and I get 52 casualties and 1 gun lost. Meanwhile, Manila sees the usual - 8 A6M2 Zero escort in 9 G3M Nell, 65 Ki-21 Sally, and 1 Ki-15 Babs and get 119 casualties and 34 airbase hits total.

Bataan

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 9242 troops, 5 guns, 287 vehicles, Assault Value = 297

Defending force 4620 troops, 106 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2

Japanese max assault: 178 - adjusted assault: 280

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 15

Japanese assault odds: 18 to 1 (fort level 4)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Bataan base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
44 casualties reported
Vehicles lost 3

Allied ground losses: Both static CD units surrender!!
3198 casualties reported
Guns lost 52

Notes/Plans:
Stuart has the 2 LCUs move back into Makassar today. The AF went to size 4. Ms. Betty/Nell have moved in and are ordered to hit them for one turn while some more still at Kendari will do the same.
KB leaves Rabaul for Palau and then to the SRA.
MSW TF are formed at Hong Kong and Takao to head for Bataan to sweep the mines.
15k in supplies loading at Takao for Bataan along with 18k in fuel from Nagasaki.
Meanwhile, BB Ise, Hyuga, and Mutsu leave Kendari with a few DDs to join BB Yamashiro and Fuso at Tarakan. They will go to Bataan and make daily bombardment runs on Manila. With the CD guns silenced at Bataan, I feel this is a great chance to severely deplete his supplies at Manila.
With Bataan captured, is this something others would not consider it gamey??

RE: Bataan Falls!!

Post by ny59giants »

30 Jan 42 I had my computer problems and after a few days of wondering why I didn't get a turn from Stuart, I found he had issues of his own.

ASW/Subs: A MSW is hit and sunk by S-27 one day SW from Takao as it headed to Bataan to begin mine sweeping operations.

Burma: At Moulmein, the suicidal Blenheim IV squadron comes in again unescorted again and 3 of the 6 are shot down by 12 A6M2 Zero and 16 Ki-43-Ic Oscar on CAP.

Malaya: At Singapore, my escort of 27 A6M2 Zero (1) and 28 Ki-43-Ic Oscar (4) allow 106 Ki-21 Sally and 4 Ki-46-II Dinah to do their job against 16 Hurricane IIb (9) on CAP. I get 22 total hits on the airbase. In the PM air phase, Singapore sees a strike from Kuching arrive. 47 A6M2 Zero (4) escort (or attempted to) 55 G3M Nell (3) against the remaining CAP of 3 Hurricane IIb (2). I destroy 2 Blenheim on the ground and get 31 airbase hits total. How I came up short on 15:1 odds in the fighter score is beyond me. [:(][:@]
Japanese Deliberate attack at Singapore

Attacking force 120842 troops, 972 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1910

Defending force 68162 troops, 388 guns, 25 vehicles, Assault Value = 788

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 3

Japanese max assault: 1519 - adjusted assault: 1324

Allied max defense: 807 - adjusted defense: 1404

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 3) Almost 1:1 odds, but close enough that the forts come down again

Japanese ground losses:
1510 casualties reported
Guns lost 39

Allied ground losses:
1284 casualties reported
Guns lost 58
Vehicles lost 3

Philippines: At Naga, the "milk run" is escorted by 9 Ki-43-Ic Oscar. The 9 B5N Kate and 76 Ki-48 Lily get 9 airbase hit total. Mt Luzon based Air Force of 8 A6M2 Zero, 9 G3M Nell, 1 C5M Babs, 46 Ki-21 Sally, and 27 Ki-49 Helen visit Manila. I get 244 casualties, Guns lost 1, Vehicles lost 2 along with Airbase hits 7, Airbase supply hits 4 (this is one of the important stats from my daily attacks [:D]), and Runway hits 39.

Celebes: At Makassar, Stuart had moved back in the two LCUs and I order my LBA to attack them. The Makassar Garrison Battalion gets hit by those at the base - 18 A6M2 Zero and 34 G4M1 Betty getting 43 casualties and then from LBA at Kendari - 6 A6M2 Zero, 27 D3A Val, and 48 G4M1 Betty getting another 107 casualties.

Borneo: At Samarinda, I try to ensure that Stuart cannot bring in more LBA to interfer with my shipping from Tarakan to Balikpapan. 19 A6M2 Zero escort in the 46 B5N Kate as I get 24 airbase hits (airbase hits 5, airbase supply hits 1, runway hits 18).

Notes/Plans: Forces are almost ready for the move on Bali which I expect to be highly contested.

31 Jan 42

ASW/Subs: SS O23 survives ASW attacks by 3 DDs from mini-KBs TF 120 miles SW of Makassar. Meanwhile, 120 mile to the SE of Makassar, SS O24 does not get hit by over 8 ASW capable ships withing the transports. I can safely say that Stuart knows something is up. [;)] At Noumea, SS I-3 gets 6 near misses (damage is 16/13/0) from 7 ASW capable ships. She is ordered back to Truk as a result. Both O23 & O24 are attacked unsuccessfully in the PM phase. However, CV Kaga shows up in the combat report.

Burma: Shut down today due to rain.

Malaya: At Singapore, I have to deal with 14 P-40E Warhawk (6) on CAP as the Hurricanes have been moved out. 26 A6M2 Zero (3) and 26 Ki-43-Ic Oscar (1) escort 104 Ki-21 Sally (3) and 5 Ki-46-II Dinah. I get 82 casualties, guns lost 2, vehicles lost 1, airbase hits 4, airbase supply hits 1, and runway hits 23.

Philippines: At Naga, the "milk run" continues with me getting airbase hits 2, airbase supply hits 2 [:)], runway hits 9. Manila, sees the airbase suffer airbase hits 13, airbase supply hits 4 [:)], and runway hits 34.

Celebes: Makassar Garrison Battalion, is visited for the second straigth day by 18 A6M2 Zero and 50 G4M1 Betty. Then, 12 A6M2 Zero and 26 D3A Val which result in 64 casualties total.

Notes/Plans: Maumere and Aitape are two empty bases captured today.

My overall supply situation is not as good as I would like. With the amount of damage I have to Oil centers, I do not see it getting much better in the short term. Since I had my old computer die, I have only the last few days worth of data.

While not part of the economy, the saga that is the Japanese Damage Control. A Naval HQ will finish unloading this turn. I hope she can survive until the port goes to size 5 as i don't think she will get much better until then.

Allied subs....everywhere

Post by ny59giants »

1 Feb 42 Like the AAR by Damian vs Nemo, For the Love of It, I too will have to run the gauntlet of Allied subs to reach my objective (Bali).

ASW/Subs: SS RO-65 misses an AP 60 miles SW of Port Moresby.
ASW attack at 35,62 (120 miles SE of Tarakan)

Japanese Ships

Allied Ships
SS Sculpin, hits 1
ASW attack at 33,64 (120 miles east of Balikpapan in the PM phase)

Japanese Ships
APD APD-36
APD APD-38
APD APD-39
MSW Takasago Maru
MSW Tomozono Maru #3
PC Kyo Maru #12
PC Showa Maru #3
PC Showa Maru #5

Allied Ships
SS KXIII

Burma: Another day when the weather rules the battle field.

Malaya: At Singapore, 24 A6M2 Zero and 25 Ki-43-Ic Oscar escort in 79 Ki-21 Sally (1) and 5 Ki-46-II Dinah. The escorts are surprised to find no Allied fighters on CAP. [X(] I manage to destroy 3 P-40E Warhawk, inflict 100 casualties, and hit the airfield (airbase hits 6, airbase supply hits 1, and runway hits 22).

Philippines: At Naga, 9 Ki-43-Ic Oscar escort in 9 B5N Kate and 79 Ki-48 Lily to achieve Airbase hits 3, Airbase supply hits 1, and
Runway hits 7. At Manila, 8 A6M2 Zero escort in 9 G3M Nell, 1 C5M Babs, 64 Ki-21 Sally, and 26 Ki-49 Helen to achieve 36 casualties along with Airbase hits 3, Airbase supply hits 3 [:)], Runway hits 29, and Port hits 1. My MSW TFs arrived at Bataan and swept for two phases without any ships hitting a mine.

Solomons Area: Milne Bay goes to AF 2 today, but the Allied seem to have been able to get their ships away from Port Moresby safely. Recon of PM shows 21 P-40E on CAP. I have a daitai of Zero and Kates each at Milne Bay. I will send over the newly upgraded daitai of Zeros from Kwajalien once they repair up before hitting this base.

SRA: At Makassar, 16 A6M2 Zero escort in 21 D3A Val from Kendari to hit the Makassar Garrison Battalion and gets 23 casualties. At Bali, my strike from Makassar of 47 A6M2 Zero escort in 77 G4M1 Betty and 1 Ki-46-II Dinah getting 1 Vildebeest IV destroyed and 21 casualties along with Airbase hits 2, Airbase supply hits 2, and Runway hits 10.

Notes/Plans: The plans for the invasion of Bali have been modifed as Betty recon of Soerabaja shows over 30 fighters along with numerous bombers. He has Vildebeest at Bali. I will move in a 3rd daitai of Zero to Makassar and they will LRCAP my invasion fleet along with a 4th daitai from mini-KB. My 2 CVEs and mini-KB will stay 6 hexes away from Soerabaja. My carriers will stay too far away while he will have to fight through about 100 Zeros to hit the invasion forces. There will be leakers, but I expect to take a serious toll of his planes based on Java. Is there anything wrong with my strategic thinking here??

Mini "Turkey Shoot"

Post by ny59giants »

2 Feb 42 Air losses in ( )

ASW/Subs: SS Sailfish survives attacks by 11 DDs of the BB TF 120 miles east of Bali. No direct hits are achieved. [:(] SS KXIV is under 7 DDs of mini-KB 180 miles east of Makassar and only gets hit by 2 near misses. SS Thresher is attacked unsuccessfully 180 miles SE of Palua and a CV Soryu shows up on the combat report. Thus, he knows where KB is at.

Malaya: At Singapore, 24 A6M2 Zero and 25 Ki-43-Ic Oscar escort in 80 Ki-21 Sally (1) and 6 Ki-46-II Dinah. They run into 7 Hurricane IIb (4) on CAP. I destroy 3 B-17E Fortress and 1 P-40E Warhawk on the ground. I inflict 155 casualties, airbase hits 7, airbase supply hits 1, and runway hits 22. This is the best way to get rid of those pesky 4e bombers. [:D] Stuart had moved them in to team up with Blenheim. The 5th Division sees 3 Blenheim and 10 B-17E Fortress inflict 52 casualties and have 3 guns lost, while the Imperial Guards Division sees 3 Blenheim and 4 B-17E Fortress inflict 40 casualties.
Japanese Deliberate attack at Singapore

Attacking force 120899 troops, 938 guns, 1 vehicles, Assault Value = 1922

Defending force 66243 troops, 363 guns, 23 vehicles, Assault Value = 758

Japanese max assault: 1364 - adjusted assault: 1310

Allied max defense: 781 - adjusted defense: 959

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 3)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 2

Japanese ground losses: The 5th Division had disruption over 60, so I will rest everyone for one day before trying again. This was the first time I got greater than 1:1 odds, so the end is in sight.
1585 casualties reported
Guns lost 17

Allied ground losses:
2122 casualties reported
Guns lost 45
Vehicles lost 2

Philippines: The minefield is completely swept away this turn. [&o] The 5 BBs and escorts leave Tarakan for Bataan.

SRA: The "turkey shoot" begings when my CAP of 49 A6M2 Zero (2) and 16 F1M2 Pete (1) over the carriers sees 5 Brewster 339D (5) and 7 P-40B Tomahawk (6) escort in 12 B-17D Fortress (2) from Soerabaja as they attempt to hit CVL Ryujo and CV Kaga without success. [:)] Next come the TBs from Bali without fighter cover to hit my transports, but are greeted by my LRCAP from Makassar of 76 A6M2 Zero. All 5 Vildebeest and 6 T.IVa are shot down. [8D] Then 2 B-17D Fortress (1) attempt to get through my 68 A6M2 Zero still on CAP. They turn back without even trying to drop their bombs. The piecemeal attacks continue as 56 A6M2 Zero still on CAP see 2 Martin 166 (2) try their luck...NOT! 4 more Martin 166 met the same fate. The LBA from Makassar get into the action by Bali by having 8 A6M2 Zero escort in 78 G4M1 Betty (1) and 1 Ki-46-II Dinah. I only get 6 hits on the airbase. [8|]
It is not a good day to be a Dutch pilot.

Notes/Plans: A very good day overall as I thought Stuart would continue his aggressive approach and letting him try to get through my thick CAP of Zeros was a good choice. I expect Dutch PT boats tomorrow and more airframes thrown at me. The landing at Bali should start after the transport move the final 120 miles at night. The subs vs ASW has been a draw, which I will gladly accept.

ASW/Subs: S-36 is one of three Allied subs at Bali and she manges to hit an AK with one torpedo before the escorts with the transports get one direct hit on her. Then, the DDs from the BB TF get a second direct hit. Since she is only 4 hexes away from Soerabaja, she may survive. I-153 is patrolling the straits between Java and Sumatra and sinks a TK with two torpedeos.

Burma: At Rangoon, the rebuilt Flying Tigers are found to be only kittens. [:D] I have 41 A6M2 Zero (1) and 12 Ki-43-Ic Oscar (2) as escorts for 81 Ki-21 Sally, 33 Ki-48 Lily, and 9 Ki-49 Helen. The Allies send up the Flying Tigers, 22 Curtis H81-3A (19) and 7 Hurricane IIb (6) as CAP. I do a moderate amount of damage - airbase hits 10, airbase supply hits 2, and runway hits 27. My 48 Zeros have an average of 83 experience between the two daitai with 8 aces and 1 double ace. Two out of three Tank Rgt between Moulmein and Rahaeng are hit by 12 Blenheim IV and 12 Wellington III in two separate attacks (light casualties).

Malaya: At Singapore, 31 Ki-21 Sally (1) and then 33 Ki-21 Sally (0) go in without escort on ground attack mission. [:@] 5 Hurricane IIb were on CAP.

The troops will rest for one day and then a Shock Attack will attempt to capture the base.

Philippines: At Manila, 8 A6M2 Zero escort in 1 C5M Babs and 77 Ki-21 Sally. I achieve 132 casualties, Guns lost 2, Airbase hits 3, Airbase supply hits 11 , and Runway hits 60. Meanwhile, at Clark Field, 9 G3M Nell, 1 C5M Babs, and 27 Ki-49 Helen (1) to achieve 37 casualties, Guns lost 1, Airbase hits 1, Airbase supply hits 1, and Runway hits 20.

China: More training by the Chinese Air Force at Yangku as 18 I-153c escort in 10 SB-2c. No damage is inflicted.

Solomons Area: At Milne Bay, my CAP of 12 A6M2 Zero (2) see a sweep of 33 P-40E Warhawk (1) from Port Moresby. I have a daitai of Oscars moved into Truk and a receently upgraded daitai of Zeros at Kwajalein still needing anoth 7 planes to repair before I move them over. The troops to invade Buna and Lae have arrived at Truk and will move to Rabaul, but I will need to neutralize PM before they move in as KB is now west of Palau.

Borneo: At Samarinda, my 16 D3A Val and 48 B5N Kate are escorted on ground attack as I think my troops from Balikpapan will cross the river this turn and Shock Attack. I get 79 casualties and 3 guns lost. The Shock Attack at Samarinda captures the base with the Allied troops surrendering (4065 casualties reported and Guns lost 35).

Java/Celebes Area: In three successive surface combats at Bali, the 4 Dutch PT boats are sunk without any damage to the BB TF (now a SC TF). They showed up a day later than I though they would.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

BANZAI!!

Notes/Plans: At Bali, I should have LRCAP the transports from the carriers and then used the Zeros at Makassar to LRCAP the carriers to decrease the distance and resulting fatigue. I'm still a novice at opposed invasions, but the best news was no damage to any major warships. [:)] I have moved in 2 daitai of Zeros and 2 chutai of Oscars as I expect at least another day of air attacks. I have learned that my transports need a BB TF and an ASW TF to keep the enemy at bay.

He has at least 8 subs in the waters from Bali, Balikpapan, to Kendari. I have two ASW TF leaving Kendari and a third from Balikpapan to "try" to get a few kills.

120 miles NE from Pontianak (Borneo), I have part of a Mixed Bde and a BB TF unseen. They should arrive tomorrow and he has 3 PT disbanded in port. Hopefully, I can sink the PTs in port.

My BB TF set to hit Manila is only 7 hexes away. There are 5 BB within the TF.

Singapore Captured

Post by ny59giants »

5 Feb 42

ASW/Subs: O 23 is attacked by 7 DDs from my SC TF heading back to Kendari from Bail 120 miles south of Makassar (no hits).

Burma: In between Moulmein and Rahaeng, my troops are hit by Blenheim IV x 15, Wellington III x 9, and Curtis H81-3A PR x 2 that have my CAP (Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 5) leaked from Moumein. The second strike of Wellington III x 7 hit the Burma HQ and inflict light casualties

Malaya: At Singapore, there are no Allied fighters on CAP, so my Ki-21 Sally x 74 (1) hit Singapore Fortress with ground losses at 117 casualties and Guns lost 6.

Philippines: At Manila, my escort of A6M2 Zero x 8 provide unneeded protection for C5M Babs x 1 and Ki-21 Sally x 68. The Sally's find the mark and the damage are: PBY Catalina: 1 destroyed; Allied ground losses: 149 casualties reported and Vehicles lost 1; Airbase hits 3, Airbase supply hits 6 [:)], Runway hits 49. With my BB TF 3 hexes out, I will shift my attacks over to Clark Field. At Clark Field, G3M Nell x 9, C5M Babs x 1, Ki-49 Helen x 25 inflict light damage - Allied ground losses: 20 casualties reported and Guns lost 1; Airbase hits 2 and Runway hits 5. Most most experienced daitai of Sally's will be switched over to ASW search at 80% and 6 hexes range as I expect Stuart to recall his subs to both Bataan and Manila to try to slow down the coming naval bombardments.

China: The daily attacks on Yangku continue as I-153c x 18 and SB-2c x 10 hit the base without inflicting any damage.

Borneo: The transports at Pontianak have a LRCAP of A6M2 Zero x 19 and Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 8 protecting them against the Allied strike of Brewster 339D x 5 (2) escorting in Martin 166 x 13 (5). No hits were made. [:)]

Its nice to see your BB TF achieve this result against those pesky PT boats. [:D]

Notes/Plans:
I transferred in a daitai of Zeros from KB to Kendari to add more planes. It landed and ALL the planes are damaged. WTF!! [:@] See my new post on this in the War Room.
Singapore: the base damage is 80/2/50 and the economic assets are HI (119) x 31; Resources (7) x 3; Shipyard Repair (19) x 6. I have 40,062 in supply with my LCUs AV at 1449. It looks like I will need a few weeks of R&R before any further offesnive operations come from these troops.

Screenshot: I have lost an AV and a MSW at Bali to date. These are the damaged ships and the transports still unloading.
