Proper amount of mines

Post by mogami »

Count all the hex on your side of the map, Now divide by 5 multiply by 10 and you arrive at the amount of points you need for mines.

Sorry about the confusion I meant you should spend 10 percent when you are defending. The people I play against don't limit what we are allowed to buy, we just moan about it once the game starts "dirty b&^%^& spent 4k on Wurfermen and ammo dumps") So for meeting engagements I do buy around 3percent mines. I do this as a means of shortening my front to concentrate.
Since to me a meeting engagement is going to occur some where near the front it seems logical that there might be mines on the front (I don't know perhaps they are left overs from WW1)
If there are no mines in a meeting engagement what are the engineers going to do? and just what would be wrong with mining your own victory hexes (I don't actually mine the VH just the approaches to them) If they are so important you'd think a commander would actually deploy something to protect them. (and prevent the enemy from moving to them) I consider all hexes on the enemy starting side to be mined untill one (or more) of my units has checked them. (I also consider every hex to contain an enemy unit untill one (or more) of my units has checked them

Burning trees are bad for your soldiers morale if they are in them! Move them out of burning hexes to improve thier mood.

Simpleton Tip #30

Post by Goblin »

If you want to win a tank duel, try to have bigger, meaner tanks, with bigger, meaner guns (like a Big Cat). If your goal is to be turned into ashes, then the choice for you is wimpy little tanks, with wimpy little guns (like a Sherman) .

Just because something costs more doesn't mean it's necessarily better.

While Panther's are related to Tigers, never settle for second best!

If attempting an amphibious or River Crossing type assault, be sure that your mean are properly prepared, Tanks don't tend to float and most soldiers don't like to swim ashore ;)

Don't kill your troops on your turn, that's the job of the enemy.

Mines

Post by El Vito »

I have polled the Priests of the Temple of Syrinx and they all agree that prelaid mines should not be used in a meeting engagement. This is a fluid battle where both sides are advancing. Mines layed DURING an engagement would be acceptable. Mines should primarily used in Assault/Defences But of course whatever 2 players agree to beforehand........ You should listen to what I say because I'm very self-important.

Optionally, if they are pinned and unable to move you may elect to have the Red Cross deliver hotdogs and marshmallows.

How to tell if they're shooting at you,

If the bullet whizzes past, then they probably missed, and are taking better aim their second shot.
If you can read this, you're at the end of my post.

If someone shoots at you, take cover. If you are in a tank, try to turn your front hull towards the enemy . If you are an infantryman and a tank shoots at you, stay prone.

If the second shot also misses, as do all the ones after that, you are obviously a pilot being fired at by an AA unit. Ignore them and continue to bomb that nice group of friendly vehicles below you that isn't firing at you because you have the same national symbol painted on your plane.

If you are in a tank, try to turn your rear end towards any enemy tank, AT gun or other AT capable unit you see. If it is a Panzerfaust and it fires at you, do not return fire.

When flying (in an airplane) over large number of enemy vehicles and infantry, ignore them. Instead, select a truck several kilometers behind the lines and bomb it. Extra bonus: do not hit.

Did you know that truck drivers carry some smoke grenades in their glove compartment?

If your truck somehow ends its turn in the LOS of a mean-*** enemy tank, bail the crew. Chances are the crew will have a couple of smoke grenades to use even though the truck unit does not have one to begin with (I don't know if this is a bug or game design).

Rant

Post by mogami »

Greetings, I have not went off on a rant for a while and I feel like doing so now. SPWAW is one of the all time great 2 player war games. This rant is directed towards the notion that the 2 players will agree on number of points and then also try to decide what their opponent can spend them on.
Mines are verbodden in meeting engagements????? Where are mines usally placed??? (I think troops place them in front of their front.....so if you are moving in front of your front and towards the front of the enemy I would suggest you look for mines.
Having only played the actual game a limited amount of time (1000+ hours) I think I recall both players having a defined front. And there even exists a small , well we'll call it "no mans land"
Where neither player can deploy units or mines.
Hint: This tip is "ALWAYS LOOK FOR AND BE PREPARED TO ENCOUNTER MINES" (and snipers, anti tank guns, flame throwers, machineguns, nuts with bottles full o gas, )
Now I agree both paries should show restraint in certain matters.
(10k meeting engagement where one side spends 9 k on off board arty and 1 k on mines would be rather amusing but hardly justified. But if you find you do not enjoy playing a particular opponent because of his eccentric buying patterns drop him and find another. (one you enjoy reading the notes atteached to the PBEM turn or talking to over RW.
hint#2 is. Playing with someone you enjoy playing with is better then playing with some one who makes you ready to travel a vast distance just to choke.
Have fun
