Orders for Dec 15-16:

Central Pacific, North Pacific, West Coast, E-USA & Panama:

- PT boats in area returned to pool. They will be available in 30 days and I can then use them in SoPac/SWPac.

- 34th & 161 Inf Rgts start embarking to be shipped to PH, they will there join present units for form 24th & 25th Inf Divisions.

- restricted air units checked for good pilots to be sent to gen. reserve. Your 50+ exp pilots will do better fighting in Philippines instead of 20-30 exp rookies. There are also some very good Marine units like VMF-121 that you can downgrade for extra F4Fs and send some pilots to reserves. Since that unit is restricted, we cannot ship it out without paying PPs.

- general air unit maintenance, turning replacements/upgrades off

India:

- first reinforcements shipped from Aden to Bombay.

- same in Cape Town

- Karachi CD fort set to Rest to rebuild faster, so I can take 63rd Brigade out. This will slow down the buildup of base, though. Engineers build only in combat mode.

- 45th Indian Brigade to march to Koggala in Ceylon, 44th set to Rest in Colombo.

- TF with 48th Gurkha Brigade should arrive to Chittagong within couple of days.

Burma:

- 13th Indian Brigade rebuild in Pegu

Malaya:

- 100th RAF Sqn (recon) withdrawn in Singapore, w/d date was Dec 19 and this will ease administrative penalties of having too many groups a bit.

- forgot that we need some PPs to change those AUS brigades unrestricted. Oh well, couple of days more. This will put another delay to our plans for Port Moresby too.

- IJA has started to move SW from Kota Bharu and has reached our first troops there.

DEI:

- some fiddling with unit modes, air evacuation of troops in Pamekasan to Soerabaja starts.

Philippines:

- IJA tank unit has reached Lingayen

- TF carrying Cebu BF is just SE of indanao, if they make it through next 2 days, they will make it.

- not much to do here, just checking unit modes.

Australia, SWPac & SoPac:

- 5th AUS Div rebuilt. It will cost us 536 PP to change HQ. We do not have that yet.

- lazy Militia companies in Lae and bases around have only made 24 miles through jungle towards PM. Start to use those machetes, guys!

- units in Rabaul set to No Replacements, they were filling faster than I can fly them off to PM.

- supply convoy to PM with 17400 tons of supplies is now on it's way.

- set some AUS Wirraways and Hudsons to train ASW, Sydney area usually starts to be infested with subs in future.

Our fighters in PI are depleted, but they can still put up a fight:

At some point some of your Far East fighter pilots start to build quite a bit of experience being in combat day after day. The skies above Clark Field are usually where you get your first Allied aces. That was the dilemma for me early in my game. Should I take the long term view and transfer them to the safety of Training Command, or leave them where they are to help delay the enemy, but then take the risk I may lose them in combat? Choices...choices.[:D]

Usually, when they start to be out of planes, I transfer all good pilots into General Reserve and fill the units with 20-30 exp pilots from Replacement pool. Bit gamey and would be nasty to the new guys arriving from transport plane:

"Air Cadets, here are your rifles! We cannot give you planes, but you'll be useful covering the embarkation of real pilots to your transport out from Philippines! Good Luck!". [:D]

Heh heh. I'd replace MacArthur with that guy in a heartbeat if I could. [:D]

Orders for Dec 17-18:

CentPac, NorthPac, WC, Panama etc.:

- S-class boats in PH sent to Pago Pago and will be routed to Brisbane later. Couple more fleet boats dispatched towards Japan and Truk.

- CL and some DDs send from Balboa to PH.

- one USN BF set target as Suva, one USAAF BF set target as Port Moresby in SF.

India:

- 48th Gurkha Brigade arrived to Chittagong. Set to Combat orders.

- in couple of days we should get 63rd Indian Brigade out of Karachi and rail it to Imphal.

Burma:

Some Mode-changes for units recently arrived to Pegu.

Malaya:

- race is on! I have hopes getting units out from Kuantan in time. Some units mode set back to Move, air attacks cause it to change to Combat and that slows them down

- 2 AUS brigades in Singapore, HQ changed, they start to embark into TF to Perth.

- TKs from Singapore sent to Palembang, they will be filled with fuel there and sent to Perth also.

- Singapore now has lvl 3 forts. Most of INF/ARM/ART units without engineers have been set to Rest there to recover Morale.

DEI & Philippines & China:

- AVD and AS on the way to Darwin send to Brisbane, will need AS there soon and AVD has ASW value, giving minimal defense against subs encountered.

- China, nothing

- PhI, arriving CMC unit in Bataan sent to Clark F., Brit MBTs to Iba, where they are in range to strike shipping (minefield barring..) and one AM sent to Bataan to sweep mines.

Australia, SWPac & SoPac:

- CM Bungaree made it and laid minefield in Rabaul. Hopefully some IJN ships will meet that when they land.

- xAKL with supplies sent to Pago Pago. TF carrying 2nd Marine Def Bn there is still only halfway.

- Trasport TF unloading US Field Artillery Bns to Noumea.

See, if I can make AAR for turn, give orders for next turn AND write them here too in 30 minutes, AE Grand Campaign cannot be that daunting. [8D]

Subscribed!  Thanks for doing this AAR - I made it a few weeks into the Dec8th scenario, but I'm starting over after applying the latest patch.  This is what I need to help tackle everything to manage in this game [:)]

A tutorial for WitP:AE, at last! [&o]

Thank you very much, Sardaukar!! Great initiative, great work! [8D]

Stay tuned...

Thank you for your kind words! [8D]

Maybe "tutorial" is not exactly right description, since I won't concentrate to game interface that much (apart to where I deem it necessary). Maybe "Introduction to Grand Campaign" might have been better description.

I know how intimidating the first GC scenario can be and I try to make it bit more "digestible". [8D] I know that everyone eventually wants to get into GC, so hopefully this AAR will be helpful.

Ok, I see...

Anyway, thank you very much for your great work! [;)]
(I´m converting it to a PDF file to read it in anytime and anywhere! [8D] ).

As a WITP virgin, this thread is of immense value. I plan to cut my teeth on the less involved WPO to understand many of the simpler game mechanics, but can't wait to lead the RN Eastern Fleet to... the bottom of the Indian Ocean!

Now appoint you my second favourite Finn after Aki Riihilahti [:D]

That was exactly my approach. WPO was a great way for me to get used to the geography in the pacific war. Growing up on UV, it took me quite a while to get used to the Philippine/DEI part of the map. There are also lots of turns where little combat is happening, so it's a lot more forgiving, and if you're a few days late doing something, odds are you won't suffer (much) for it. Oh, and I have a deep love of pre-WWI battleships. USS Monadnock is my spiritual flagship. [8D]

I was a month into AE, until I accidentally saved my playing of the Guadalcanal scenario over it.[:@] It took forever to assemble the jigsaw puzzle that the OZ divisions start as. Kudos to Sardaukar for this AAR for helping me take a fresh look at a restart.

Just curious about Rabaul: I have the same situation in my game, where Maizuru SNLF was not able to took the base due to my interdiction of the landing forces. In my game, however, the Japanese has been able to reinforce this small detachment and now the two opposing forces are basically the same, troop and AV-wise.

I was preparing to send a small Batallion from PM to Rabaul, but I would like to know first your opinion : is Rabaul a lost game whatever I do (I know, do not ask how [:D], that the Japanese has a couple of little transports headed for this base)? Or is it possible to hold it against the AI?

Bear in mind that a lot of the strategies and tactics that work vs the AI will noy be generally as effective against a human PBEM opponent

The AI wastes no time speeding to Rabaul.  My rescue convoys always tend to show up on the same day as the invaders.  [:(]

Usually Rabaul is pretty much gone unless you can reinforce with division or so. And getting division there is all but impossible, since AI tends to be quite quick bringing in reinforcements. I am evacuating troops from Rabaul to prop my defenses in PM. Every engineer and aviation support counts.

Great Idea Sardauker, I didn't read the whole thread so I may have missed it but it's a good idea on the first turn for the allied player to start building ports on all off map bases, once they are built to max switch to airfields.
