Turn 16 - September 22nd to September 26th 1965

Operations Highland, Golden Fleece, and OPORD 12-65/Ben Cat 1 continue with negative enemy contact. US Army Task Force Alpha based at Nha Trang has been renamed Field Force Vietnam. There are 3 missions this turn one US army one US Marine and one ARVN. Here's the news summary for Turn 16.

Operation Good Friend I - Clear and Secure

On the 22nd of September the 2/502 Airborne Infantry of the 1st Brigade 101st Airborne division has been ordered to relieve the 1/18th Infantry Battalion of the 1st US Army Division at Cam Ranh Bay and secure the area for the deployment of the 2nd Republic of Korea Marine Brigade.

Operation Quyet Thang 165 - Search and Destroy

On the 23rd of September the 22nd ARVN Division (2/41, 3/41, 2/40 Infantry Battalions) and the 22nd and 23rd ARVN Ranger Battalions were ordered to retake the Phu Cu Outpost at the Phu Cu pass which fell to an estimated Regimental sized Viet Cong Force after they overran the ARVN Regional Force Company that was based there. A Fire Support Base (FSB) was set up at Bong Son. As the ARVN troops advanced on the pass they realized that a significant Viet Cong force was in the area. The ARVN force calls in US airstrikes on the pass before they attack.

Operation Quyet Thang - Phu Cu Pass cleared

The ARVN troops managed to push the Viet Cong out of the Phu Cu pass after massive US airstrikes were called in on them. The VC suffered about 50% casualties in the ARVN attack while ARVN losses were minimal. US Jets continued to pound the VC Regiment as it retreated west towards the Kim Son Valley.

Turn 16 - Operation Dagger Thrust I

Operation Dagger Thrust I - Search and Destroy

Starting on the 25th of September the 2nd Battalion 1st Marine Regiment SLF (Special Landing Force) were ordered to conduct the first in a series of rapid succession amphibious raids along the coast of Vietnam. This first raid that landed on the Vung Mu Peninsula resulted in negative contact with the Viet Cong. This concludes Turn 16.

Good job at Phu Cu Pass, it is one of these lesser known battles where the ARVN fought superbly, killing an estimated 700 VC and wining several awards and citations.

Thanks man [8D] I couldn't find any info on this battle online but it seems quite interesting.

Quyet Thang 165

The ARVN force that has retaken the Phu Chu Pass have continued to encounter Viet Cong Resistance in the area despite continuous airstrikes against the VC regiment. The main effort is on the Battalion south of the pass. The VC take an estimated 30% casualties in the attack on the southern Battalion. There is also an estimated Battalion sized VC force in the village of Hoai An that is harassing the ARVN units. The ARVN will have to clear the village and have called for airstrikes on occupied Hoai An.

On the 26th of September A company of the 1st Battalion 7th Marine Regiment have been ordered to conduct a search and destroy operation around Binh Son there is negative contact with the enemy during the operation.

Operation Dagger Thrust II - Search and Destroy

On the 27th of September the 2nd Battalion 1st Marines (SLF) have conducted the second in a series of rapid succession amphibious raids along the coast of Vietnam. The second landing site was at Ben Goi Bay in Kanh Hoa Province. The SLF didn't even land on the beach as recon reports reported no enemy presence in the target area.

Operations SAYONARA/GOOD FRIEND II/SPREAD OUT - Search and Destroy, Security, Rice Denial

Beginning on the 28th of September the 1st Brigade 101 airborne Division will begin this ambitious operation and wrap up Operation Highland. This operation was designed to provide security for the deployment of the Republic of Korea Capital Infantry Division at Binh Khe. Elements of the 22nd ARVN Division and 2/7th Marine Battalion will also be helping in the operation. In the beginning phase the 1/327 and 2/327 airborne infantry battalions will be clearing the road (Highway 19) from Qui Nhon to Binh Khe. There is negative contact with the enemy in this initial phase. This concludes Turn 17.

Operations Golden Fleece, OPORD 12-65/Ben Cat 1, Good Friend I, And SAYONARA/GOOD FRIEND II/SPREAD OUT continue with negative contact with the enemy. Operation Highland is terminated. This turn see's the arrival of the Major Headquarters elements of the US Army 1st Infantry Division and the Republic of Korea's Capital Infantry Division. There are 3 missions this turn. Turn 18 - Big Red One HQ Arrives

Big Red One Division HQ Arrives

The Headquarters for the US Army's 1st Infantry Division arrives at Vung Tau and will move north to Bien Hoa. The 1st Division is under the command of Major General Jonathan O. Seaman. Along with Division headquarters is the arrival of the 1st Divisions 3rd Brigade HQ under the command of Colonel William D. Brodbeck. Also with these 2 HQ elements arrives the 2/28th Infantry Battalion of the 1st Division and 2nd Battalion of the 33rd Artillery. These units will move up to Bien Hoa.

ROK Capital Division HQ arrives with 2 Cavalry Companies and Artillery

The Headquarters of the incoming ROK Capital Infantry Division under the command of Major General Myung Shin Chae arrive at Qui Nhon. Arriving with the HQ is the 628th Field Artillery Battalion and two companies of Cavalry. The ROK Capital Cavalry companies move up to Binh Khe.

Turn 18 - Operation Big Red

Operation Big Red - Troop Movement

Beginning on September 29th the US Army 2nd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) is ordered to start Operation Big Red to provide security for the Deployment and establishment of its Parent Units brigades to their assigned base camps. The Operation will take place between Phu Loi, Lai Khe, and Phuoc Vinh. The 2nd Brigade 1st Division has been in Country for several months and has been based at Long Binh Post southeast of Bien Hoa. The 2/18 and 2/16 Infantry Battalions of the 2nd Brigade will take part in the Operation. There is negative Contact with the enemy in this initial phase of the Operation.

Operation Dagger Thrust III - Search and Destroy

Third is a rapid series of rapid succession amphibious raids along the coast of Vietnam. Marine 2/1 Bn (SLF) landed at Tam Quan in Binh Dinh Province. 2/1 reembarked after fleeting contact with local Viet Cong. This Concludes Turn 18.

Turn 19 - October 3rd to October 6th 1965

Operations Golden Fleece, OPORD 12-65/Ben Cat 1, Good Friend I, SAYONARA/GOOD FRIEND II/SPREAD OUT, and Big Red continue with negative contact with the enemy. There is one mission this turn involving the 1st Cavalry Division. On October 5th President Johnson officially authorizes the use of Riot Control agents (CS gas) in Vietnam.
