May 13:

B-24's struck Attu in several waves but didn't do material damage. Allied ground attack at Kiska achieves only 1:3 but again inflicts 3:1 casualties in favor of the Allies. The defenders are almsot out of ammo.

The Bettys from Attu were grounded today. Clearly, there will be no landing at Attu, there isn't enough time until the IJN carriers arrive.

May 13: No attack at Kiska today. It looks like the Bettys are not flying due to supply issues at Attu. I am sending the IJN cruisers in at night to try to pick off some USN DD's operating NE of Kiska.

Mirror game was a BAAAD day for me. One of the BB's took two torps from a sub one hex from dutch [:@] and an AP was sunk by a Mavis [:@]
[:@]. A CL was also hit by a Mavis. [:@]

May 14: The cruiser raid is for naught as the Allied landing groups retire. 4 Bettys find retreating Nevada, put one torp into her and she blows up. Another Allied attack on Kiska fails.

Sinking of Nevada is a big deal...thats 198 pts on top of a 150 advantage to IJN in this game for a now nearly 350 pt advantage. With a comfortable advantage in this game and a samller advantage in the mirror game, things aren't looking good for Raver.

In the mirror game, USS Nevada, already hit by two torps, safely makes Dutch Harbor. All 3 USN BB's are non-operational but they arent really needed at this point as there is no point in trying to take Attu. I sent most of the Special Forces Brigade toward Kiska, they should start unloading tomorrow. If cautious play on my part, Raver will have to attack Dutch with his carriers when they arrive. That seems unlikley to work.

Why wouldn't Raver go after a port strike on Dutch to nick those damaged BBs that are just sitting there? What can you do to forestall this action?

I imagine that is EXACTLY what he hopes to do. He conceded on the game with me as IJN with a 360 pt margin in that game and a 37 pt margin in my favor in the mirror game.

That means he has to close a 400 pt gap, perhaps 440 if Kiska falls to the Allies in the mirror game. That means he has to sink 2 BB's and some other ships or 1 BB and perhaps CVE Nassau and 3 crusiers without suffering a loss to one of his carriers or heavy plane losses.

It would be crazy to try to hide the 15-19 kt damaged BB's at sea. Instead Dutch has to be made ready.

1) Damaged BB's pump out flooding as much as possible. One has no flooding but about 20% system damage. The other two will be at 25-40% flooding when the carriers show up.

2) Build up the airfield to 6 if possible. I dont think the port can be built up.

3) Fine tune the air groups, especially the fighters. Get the F4F's off the Nassau.

4) Scrounge up some mines.

5) Fly in some aviation support from Adak.

6) Start training the Venturas and B-25's in naval attack.

7) Plan to absorb a port attack with a massive CAP of P-38's, Kittyhawks, P-40's and F4F's and possibly hit back with B-25's and Venturas.

8) Get USN subs in position off PJ to try to get a shot at the Jap carriers.

Another suggestion: Make him divide his forces between naval attack and port attack. Have one of the damaged BBs in port in a TF, the other disbanded in port. The port attack will ignore the TF and vice versa. Unless he splits his attack force in advance, he will ignore one or the other, thereby mitigating your risk that he gets 'em both.

Since you're likely to prevail in this struggle, let me just say that I look forward to gutting you like a fish in our next match-sir.

He will also have Musashi. If I were him I would send in a bombardment group the night before the port attack. I will probably leave a group of DD's backed up by second cruiser taffy at sea in the Dutch Harbor hex to deal with that threat.

If you think you're likely to be the recipient of a bombardment TF, why not vacate the premise and head one hex East of Dutch Harbor? Let him bombard nothingness (or at least nothingness in port). Or, if you prefer a more formal Sun Tzu phraseology, "Let your opponent strike emptiness with fullness." I'll even put it in italics to emphasize it's cooleology.

Well, they don't get much bigger than Mushashi. The Cap'n will be seeing that one pretty soon, from what he says...

No, it obviously makes Mandrake the Shark... he died, but not before he did in Quint.

By this logic, Mandrake will take the next round, and be defeated in the finals.

Dude. "The shark" in this case is the one in the picture. Or what's left of it. Quint is looking through the dried up mouthpiece of the eviscerated shark whilest sneering at 'ya-what I intend to do with the Cap'n.
