MALAYA/DEI

Ambon comes into the realm of my focus.

TF 52 encounters mine field at Ambon (76,109) - Coastal Guns Fire Back!
10 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships
AMc Wa 14, Shell hits 2
AMc Wa 10, Shell hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage
5 mines cleared

Troops unloading over beach at Ambon.

TF 52 encounters mine field at Ambon (76,109) - Coastal Guns Fire Back!
Japanese Ships
AMc Wa 14, Shell hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage
4th Coastal Gun Battalion firing at AMc Wa 14
AMc Wa 14 firing at 4th Coastal Gun Battalion
6 mines cleared

I lose both of the AMc but they have completed their job… locating and clearing some of the mines. Hopefully no transports will fall victim to these eggs now that they have been found.

I./4th Infantry Battalion at Madioen is under attack from 1 Demon, 6 Falcon and 1 Hawk. 2 Oscar damage a couple of enemy planes before the bombs drop.

Singapore is bombed – 4 Buffalo in the skies but the bombers have 5 Oscar for support. 1 airbase hit and 4 runway hits.

Japanese deliberate attack at Singapore achieves 1-1 odds and reduces forts to 1.

Japanese ground losses:
2234 casualties reported
Squads: 9 destroyed, 159 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 24 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 49 disabled
Guns lost 14 (2 destroyed, 12 disabled)
Vehicles lost 7 (1 destroyed, 6 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
546 casualties reported
Squads: 24 destroyed, 84 disabled
Non Combat: 8 destroyed, 46 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 4 disabled
Vehicles lost 5 (2 destroyed, 3 disabled)

Quite the hard slog going on here and I probably would have done well to have 1 more division here… but that division was diverted to Java. It will take a little longer but Singapore will fall and still well before the real life timetable. I’m going to take a few days to allow for disruption and fatigue to come down. In the meantime more shelling of the beleaguered defenders.

Japan captures Namlea.

Japanese deliberate attack at 74,100 near Sidate achieves 13-1 odds. 56A casualties and the survivors from Manado must be on the very edge of oblivion.

Japanese capture Kudat.

Allies bombard at Ambon.

PACIFIC

And on the other side of New Guinea this happens:

Day Time Surface Combat, near Gasmata at 103,127, Range 18,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
xAKL Tomozono Maru #3, Shell hits 2, and is sunk
xAK Shinwa Maru, Shell hits 24, and is sunk
xAKL Taiyu Maru, Shell hits 8, and is sunk

Allied Ships
CA Australia
CA Canberra
DD Stuart
DD Le Triomphant

Well this was always going to happen somewhere sooner or later. No troops lost so that is good. On the bright side I have a position now on 2 Australian cruisers. I guess they will be operating out of Townsville. I am working on a little plan to see if I can catch with them with something more substantial than transports and hopefully turn the tables here. Hard though not to feel proud of Australian warships getting the first decent attrition on the IJN.

Japanese capture Gasmata…. Now to do something about the non existent naval transports as those meant to take the troops off have started life as a future tourist draw card reef.

CHINA

Liuchow is bombed – 4 airbase hits, 7 airbase supply hits and 14 runway hits.

30th Chinese Corps at 84,47 near Ichang is bombed – 8 casualties.

70th Chinese Corps at 84,55 near Nanchang is bombed – 32 casualties.

Japanese bombard Chagsha – 6J casualties.

Japanese bombard Wenchow.

Japanese bombard Pucheng.

Japanese deliberate attack at 71,56 near Lang Son achieves 1-2 odds. Just missed out on a 1-1 on adjusted AV J102 to A105!. 159J to 97A casualties. Looks like everyone is on a level footing here with 4th Ind.Mixed Regiment up against 52nd Chinese Corps. I shall have to find something more if I want to winkle this Chinese unit out of the way.

Japanese bombard at Kweiteh.

Hwaiyin is occupied by the Japanese.

PHILIPPINES

Manila is bombed – 4 airbase hits, 2 airbase supply hit and 20 runway hits.

Japanese bombard at Bataan. Japan lose 3 guns destroyed to 56A casualties (2 non-combat squads destroyed).

BURMA

Japan captures Moulmein.

Ouch… my shipping losses just jumped from 5 to 10 vessels! Luckily 3 of them are 1 point ships.

We shall sit tight until Batavia has been dealt a blow and conquered.

PHILIPPINES

Manila is bombed – 1 airbase hit, 1 airbase supply hit and 6 runway hits.

Last turn this pops up in the Indian Ocean. I had sent AMCs Akagi, Hokoku and Kinryu Maru into the Indian Ocean with the idea of trying some commerce raiding. I used Carrier Div 5 as cover and hoped they would break through the DEI island chain unobserved... hopefully the did but only Todd knows the answer to that question.

So this turn I check on their progress towards a line where I think ships might be sailing with Perth as a destination. I find instead that they have parked themselves right next to Allied ships at the end of the turn. No idea what they might be. Recon suggest 5 ships. They are moving southeast which puts them on a heading direct to Port Headland.

I decide to take a chance that they are merchants (hopefully unescorted) and order my 3 raiders to split up and try for intercepts.

Possibilities...

A. 3 dead AMCs

B. 3 victorious AMCs or something close to that.

C. Todd sees them and scatters the merchants if that is what they are.

Java

Here is the situation in Java. It has unravelled far more quickly than I ever expected.

5 units located in Batavia and some very many units at Soerabaja. Batavia first and then we shall move on the other prize. Intel also suggest some 30+ ships holed up in Soerabaja but I don't have the aerial power down this way just yet to do something about it.

Well they got away. Nicely sidestepped my waiting trap. In retrospect it would have been better to spread those AMC around.

Intel suggests 6 ships and they appear to be xAKL. Now to decide what to do with these raiders as I'm guessing that Todd has a good idea that something is lurking in this neck of the woods.

Not sure but leaving them out in the Indian Ocean is only inviting proper surface units to pounce. This little exercise does tell me that Todd appears to be using the small groups of transports and the like to shuttle around the Indian Ocean.... doing goodness knows what but clearly up to no good as far as I'm concerned.
