Jul / Aug 1942 - After 5 impulses each

Despite my negative forecast I had the much needed extra impulse.
With 3 of May / June this averages out the 8 summer impulses (well one of May June was snow) that were estimated by the Fuhrer to conquest Soviet Russia.

As he said, "All we need to is to kick strongly the door, and all the rotting manor will crumble on itself".
That is about how exactly it happened.

But currently the "Ural Front" (just renamed that way by Hitler on his maps) has been scattered. Shaposhinov wisely railed away with a 7-3 INF. The remaining Soviet troops slugged slowly away.

The Germans took some risks, they can afford now losses and mostly to be disrupted. The turn won't go on for much longer, the player knows and feels.
For a 2-5 SS MNT unit, the Germans destroy 2 INFs of the Soviets in the sector, but mostly force to retreat 2 other units and have a CAV surrounded.
The shatter results have been purposefully converted into retreats. One more impulse, if it happens, and these Soviets are toast. And anyhow better having them in front of 6 moving Panzers (especially the 3 moving INF) than to appear somewhere else, whereever the Soviet needs them.

Meanwhile from distance the Armeegruppe Mitte spearheads see the dusts of the steppes lifted by the Soviet tank armies running to the relative safety of the Urals, Vatutin is commanded to perform a counterattack!

The German Fallschirmjager must be destroyed - it's imperative command directly from Stalin.
Obviously, if the Germans would have planned slightly better, they'd have already all the Soviets that side of the mountains out of supply - but alas no, I was blind.

At least there was the wisdom of keeping the long range (Naval in camo colours) Stuka in range for support, and the paratroopers fends off the attack of the Soviets (which used the HQ and a MIL).

The Germans maneuvers on, using a Stuka to bomb the defenders of the mountain passes - but the pilots lead to disappointment. Despite 6 tactical factors, the Soviet unit targetted is not flipped.
There is only 1 INF that is already disrupted and now being also OOS means it is eaten like a chesspiece, without a hope to say otherwise when another piece moves in its square.

The Axis brings in a new Stuka (more like, old stuka that remained behind) and a Bf109 - somehow their espionage revealed that the Soviets will receive two very modern fighters with highly trained pilots the coming month!

Iraqi Front remained static.

Jul / Aug - After 5 impulses each

Italy seems to have managed to use their radar once again.
Rolling an 1 and the UK an 8, the Italo-Japanese mixed fleet found the Brits. It's storm.

The Axis selects the carrier task force, escorted by 2 BBs and an amount of cruisers.
3 X and 2 A inflicted on the RN - Axis kept 6 surprise point to choose targets. By how we play, W.Allies pick 1st, 3rd and so forth, but the Axis picks 2nd, 4th etc - but carriers cannot be normally picked.

With surprise points the 1st pick is Axis - and it's free. A carrier hopefully is to go down. But passes the save (4 armour). It's only damaged.
Axis then elects a BB, which astonishingly fails its save (It had 2 armour!) and sinks.
The Axis has to decide again, spending 3 surprise points again. To finish off the carrier damaged (which has a CVP on too), or try the luck to destroy a different target?
The Axis picked the same carrier, which went kaboom.

The W.Allies return fire, and they've a decent gunnery.
1 X and 2 D.
The Axis (picking the first target in Surface combat) select their worst cruiser (Still a heavy cruiser that is pretty good), and it passes the save.
The W.Allies though, in their moment to select who to damage, prefer to finish off the cruiser. Another save would have came handy, the ship would have scooted away damaged. It was not the case. An Italian heavy cruiser got sunk.
The last damage is on one of the Littorios, but their armour is sturdy - the ship journeys back to Aden, having suffered minor damage, for repairs. It will be operational again the next month.

US unleashed more submarines of their ample reserves of them (not sure how many they still have, but with their absurd production they're not in shortage of anything!) but the raiders did not achieved nothing meaningful.

Instead the Japanese have methodically kept invading ports to claim territories.

They've still on the list of stuff to take Timor, Sarawak, Brunei and British Northern Borneo. By themselves are quite meaningless but they can still be used later on as advanced bases from the Allies - bases which otherwise they'd have to take.

Caucasus - the Germany launched two offensives after renewed failure of their latest Stuka.
+10 and +9.50

Germans lose 2 Divs and 1 INF.
Soviets lose 1 MIL and 1 CAV - but the road to Turkey seems quite open by now.

From Iraq front 2 Soviet Cavalries are rushing north.

End of Jul / Aug 1942

This is the final destroyed pool.
Other happenings across the world in the last impulse:

Italy bombs with success a Soviet CAV in Iraq, that was OOS already - and was being used as threat to Baghdad in case the Axis was not using units to ZoC-screen it.
The Cicogna, inferior to the Stukas, nailed the target!

Japan launched an offensive in Manchuria. At the cost of one of their TERRs, they managed to erase the Russian MIL protecting the swamp - and thus the eastern hinge of their defences.

The Royal Navy finds in the Arabian Sea, but they opt to play safe and smash the convoy without escort, than facing the many guns of the Axis battleships.

End of Jul / Aug - Ural situation

Stalin is definitely not happy.
And he will be even less if the weather will still be good and the Axis goes first.

But as the Allies have a +2 on the initiative track, that is very doubtful (that Axis goes first)

Another woe for the Soviets.

Will they try to hold the position or run to the next riverline - and surrender the precious resource to the Japanese?

End of Jul / Aug - Arabian Sea

The W.Allies nailed the Axis convoy there and Axis could not replace it.
Will the Axis remain at sea and go down to the 1 box with all their ships to protect the Italian TRS that at the present is the link to Iraq supply?

Alternatively they can have Balbo eat the supply unit for September / October - in the while the Turkey should hopefully get into the Axis minors count!

Production after Jul / Aug 1942

The US received their new Essex, and in the next turn 5 light carriers will join the fray.
The US will have definitely naval superiority in the Pacific at that stage, even more as they get a 7 air factor FTR2 with range 12 - which if shipped to the Pacific, simply outguns one on one anything the Japanese can put against it.
Though US lack other fighters, and their best embarked fighter is 5 strong, whereas the Japanese have at least 2*6 and 3*5 CVPs.

In Russia the weather is fine everywhere, and the Soviets placed all their newly received units in the Caucasus, leaving the Urals pretty empty except the troops that were retreating there from the front of Moscow.

Allies seized the initiative smoothly (They've +2 still), if the Axis also started the turn Soviets would have been in big trouble as also their tank groups retreating to the Urals would have been surrounded.

The Italian fleet remained at sea, at the 1 box. The Royal Navy is preparing to jump on them with lots of ships - but the Royal Navy is short of operational carriers, only 2, and their best Fulmar is 4 strong; against a 6 and 5 strong Japanese fighters which will appear on the 1 box to provide air cover and escort for the last Sparviero.

For the production, bear in mind some (mainly Axis) has produced also 1 turn units: MILs,TERRs.

Sept / Oct 1942 - After one impulse each of good weather

Disaster for the Axis!
DISASTER!

The Royal Navy finally exacts revenge on the Italo-Japanese fleet in Arabian Sea.
At the cost of 5 cruisers of sort - the British sink 2 Italian CA, 2 Japanese BBs, and damage much more (including 1 Italian BB and 1 Japanese BB).
The cost for the Axis navies is immense!

The Italians fleet into Aden, the Japanese planes that provided aircover back to Ceylon.

The Royal Navy found the Axis twice in a row, and badly. Saves were also bad for the Axis.
And ontop of that Balbo had to eat its Supply Unit to keep the Italians in Iraq in supply!

Italy also promptly manned with a garrison (The one that started the game in Lybia!) Aden. Better to have something in that place - especially as the fleet is severely weakened now.

Pacific:

The US raids with submarines.
Japan loses 4 CPs and 1 CP is aborted - 2 US subs are damaged.

That is quite a bad impulse for Japan.

Sept / Oct 1942 - After one impulse each of good weather

Since the W.Allies started, and the US moved carriers in from USA and reorganized them, the Japan decides to leave to them the naval initiative, and with fine weather in Russia they take a Land action.

The Japanese get rid of a partisan in Birmania, and after their land bombers (the flying coffee machines with 1 and 2 tactical factors) flip 2 soviet units out of three, Japan launches an attack at +6 against them.

Soviets elect Blitz to flee, and a 21 is rolled. Soviets lose only 1 unit - an ART - but their troops retreat (the HQ was used to provide defense bonus); Japan has no losses as it was open ground!

Both sides use HQ to support - and the Soviets have 2 CAV units (1 Mongol) which are operational - below the HQ and the Siberian INF which got disrupted.
Japan only got their HQ disrupted.

Some bombing runs from Germany, and the Axis moves in the Caucasus, erasing an INF and INF-HQ from the map.
Also the Soviet Black Sea fleet is destroyed.

From Iraq Soviets are pulling back and arranging a defence for Baku.
Tblis has only a GARR-Div and the plane in.

Unless the turn ends prematurely, Axis envision to align Turkey to Germany.

Sept / Oct 1942 - After an Impulse of Good Weather each

Germans are going for the Urals.
The Soviets have barely a force to delay the Axis, but bad weather is the enemy of the Germans right now.

The Soviet units are the whole of the current units Soviets have there - from here to Manchuria! No reserves coming this turn, nothing can reach via rail from Caucasus.

I am praying for lots of good weather but chances are low!

Sept / Oct - After 2 impulses each

It's Allied Impulse #7 - the turn could end with 1 after they take their impulse.
But the sun shines again in Soviet Russia - and this is a grand woe for Comrade Stalin.

The Ural front is grievously endangered, some of their OOS units moved and now lay disrupted; they've few maneuverable units and some of their relevant cities in the zone are in peril of being taken and seized.

There are these 2 tank armies in the open which look juicy - but the Axis too has a choice to make.
Attack the 2 tank armies or seize the Soviet cities with factories and resources?

Sept / Oct 1942 - Caucasus

The rain prevented the Germans to achieve anything - a grandtotal of 0 attacks here too. Simple movements.
But now that the good weather arrived, the fall of Tblis is ensured if an impulse is granted.

And once Turkey gets in, the situation will turn even more grim for the Soviet forces which are getting cornered against a wall of sea.

To the end of Sept / Oct 1942

Major action took place in the Pacific.

At the 2nd Impulse of their turn the US went out with their fleet - reaching for the 2 box of Solomon Sea.
Their new Essex carriers were moved to Pearl Harbour and Pago Pago and reorganized during the 1st Impulse.
A cruiser is loaded too with a Division.

The formation of the USA was quite formidable, counting 10 fully manned carriers - escorted by a BB (Alabama) and 9 CA.
Thanksfully for Japan, the USA had not found the convoy point in the Solomons, protected as well by a plane that went there to cover against submarines earlier.
A pesky trap of the US.

The USA went to the 2 box because their AMPH and TRS could get there only in the 2 box - and from there span a wide range of Japanese isles, including Truk. Truk is manned only by a 6-4 Japanese white print infantry at the time.

Japan knows to be in danger, and with risk to lose a major naval base. Japan takes a Naval action.
US has little reserves - 9 old BBs (the 4 moving ones), 2 cruisers (one of them dedicated to a MAR division) and the Amph both in the Pago Pago zone.
A pair of submarines are sent there to attempt the intercept later on in a sea empty of US surface forces (there is only a 6-3 moving submarine that arrived from San Diego).

Then everything the Japan could throw, was thrown into battle in the Solomons. The Japanese task force counts of all their carriers at avail - except Jinjo and Shoho.
Japan has guns - 110 points of gunnery against 55 of USA.
Japan has fighters - 2 * 6 and 2 * 5; vs 2 * 5 and 3 * 4.
Japan has naval bombers operating from the ground too.
But US has a helluva of carrier planes - 2 of them with 6 of air naval power, and 2 with 5 of air naval power.

Japan opts to split their forces, what can get to the 4 gets to the 4 box. Unyo (Jinjo's sister carrier) goes to the 2 with more land based planes (Japan pours 4 of them there plus one at the 0) and the battle is to commence.
Japan also made the convoy flee - to avoid giving a +1 to the US roll to search.

The fist Japanese impulse see the IJN victorious, a roll of 1 vs a roll of 5. Japan peels 7 Surprise points - and calls for Surface Combat electing to choose a target (Remember with our House Rule, every odd target is normally selected from owner and even target from opponent).
US Intrepid is blasted away even before to see combat, sinking with 2 CVP squadrons.
Alabama is the next target, and explodes as well - hit certainly by heavy shells of IJN BBs.
The US loses 2 more CA and gets another damaged there.
Japan's cruiser Tenryu and BB Haruna are sunk too; another cruiser aborted.

The US also have lost one of their 5 Air to Air fighters now, along with the Intrepid (and a 3 air to sea factor CVP too).

Decision Time: I would have fled with the US fleet by now. By staying the US could have brought in their BBs, and fought still decently, but US are not much in a rush yet - and they get 5 new light carriers next turn; I'd not have endangered the fleet on almost even grounds; but heck historically the US went in on parity at Midway.

The US elects to remain and so the Japanese does. But they do not find each other.

US impulse, good weather still! US takes combined, and reinforces in with 5 BBs from Pearl Harbour.
Then with the other 2 moves brings in the invasion force from Pago Pago zone - and the Japanese submarines fail to intercept both the pratically unescorted troop convoys.

The US favor not to fight in the Solomons - after all why to endanger their invasion. But the Japanese are there and want to fight. The IJN finds again 2 to 6, again peeling the 7 surprise points.
It's a new Surface combat; the Japan loses the Mutsu and the Nachi.
Japan elects the Essex as target - which is only damaged but has the last 5 air to air US CVP.
BB Nevada too sees to the bottoms of the seas.
Some ships are damaged by the end of the clash.

Decision time: Japan here had to decide if to screw the invasion by selecting as target one of the TRS or AMPH - or hit a carrier. My reasoning is that if I find again, I could use less fighters on the US side.

Both fleets remain but alas the US manage to remain, not being found again. That was the purpose of erasing the fighters from the skies. But it served somehow the purpose.

US invade. They examine the targets and ultimately have to decide between Truk (Major base) or Porto Vila (minor base but gives on 3 seas and more tenable presently).
The Notional in Truk is 4 strong (since all the invaders are from Box 2!) and US has little shore bombing remaining (6 points, and 6 points of attack combat value) vs 10 defending points.
The airplane battle is -massive- and see the Japanese and US fighters dogfighting with no results (We had litterally 5 rounds of air battle where all the results were pratically clearing an opponent bomber). In the end of the day only 1 Japanese CVP was shot down; the US cleared most of their bombers and so the Japanese did safe one being shot down. Few aborted planes.

The attack is only at +3.X
It ends bad for the US - as they roll 6. All the invading force perishes on the shores of Truk.

But it's not over yet.
The Japanese in their (3rd) impulse attack again. This time they choose Naval Air combat despite having 8 surprise points.
Their airplanes did not performed well over Truk (Japan had +2 and US -2!) but the admirals are confident they'll be successful on the sea.

There are -heavy- losses from both sides, the air battle starts at +2 for Japan and -3 for US (2 Surprise points spent).
Japan loses a NAV2 and a TRS4 (A Naval pratically!); has 2 NAV3 aborted too - which is crippling because they go back to the ground and not stick around for more rounds like CVP.
The US gets 2 CVPs shanked in the process.

2 US CVPs get through, 6 and 5 value! The Japanese carriers are in dire danger, the remaining 6 surprise points are spent to bolster the AA. Highest of 3 dices. 7. A bomber is blasted away and the other still gets to score a X. Zhuikaku is the designated victim, loaded with an aborted 6 strong Zero.

The IJN commanders scream "Full Starboard", the ships perform evasive maneuvers and Zhuikaku gets only damaged, and the other CV carrying the other 6 strong Zero is aborted.

Japan is luckier, with 5 bombers getting through. The AA barrage of the US is massive - they score 11 points and blast away from the skies an excellent NAV3 and shrink damage on the fleet by 1 only. (Lucky rolls from the US I believe, 2 lowest out of 4; the mechanics in which AA inflicts damage is strange though. To have shot down 2 CVPs would have been much better for the US as they've have soaked 7 air to sea power instead of just 3).

Japan scores 3 X though.
CV Lexington II is the first target - but it resists the destruction. Pesky damage control teams of US, the Japan selects it as their other X of choice (a cruiser was damage as Allied choice) wanting to be sure to sink another US CV (with a plane loaded).

In the US turn the US brings forth 4 more old BBs and 1 CA, from Pago Pago - deploying all their naval arsenal in the Pacific.
But the fleets - battered and punished - do not find each other.

And the turn reached an end.

Japan lost loads - US lost more though.
But Japan struggles to repair the losses meanwhile USA is just delivering tons of ships - though that is letting Germany pratically conquer Russia (Which produced only 6 BPs this turn!)

The turn ended - and the Axis was just in position to claim Turkey.
It has to happen in Nov / Dec 1942 then.

Soviets are bunkering around Baku as Tflis fell to the German advance.
Also Persia got liberated and Germany kept the territory.

Positions of Nov / Dec 1942 - Allied's initiative

A shame Axis did not had one more impulse. Would have simply severed the "oil supply" to that armoured group in the middle of the Urals. Would have been most ... interesting and easening the job.

Nonetheless the Axis advance has not stopped and they seized Perm and Sverdovlsk unopposed. Germans feel confident that even if the Soviets try to mount a counterattack with their scarce units, they can overwhelm them by the openings of spring once the weather improves.

As per usual Leningrad is starting to get many units of the Axis around it and there are some corps in Moscow and surroundings which received order already to travel by train to France.
