Some careless play cost me a destroyer, but the Kriegsmarine hit back with a battleship and an almost destroyed light cruiser squadron.

At long last Finland enters the war!

This is essentially a consolidation turn for the Axis. In both China and the Soviet Union I am struggling to make progress and so decide its time to try and bring units up to strength or upgrade as much as possible. There are strong units on the Dvina and Riga has yet to fall....

It's not ideal to be wasting a clear weather turn doing this, but some of my units are completely un-upgraded - even if such a word exists.

I get a bit of luck with the Finns. The Soviets have their aircraft on the border (perhaps assuming Finland weren't entering?) and I was able to severely maul (and force into retreat) a Soviet bomber.

Elsewhere in the Baltic the Soviet light cruisers destroy themselves trying to escape.

It's a similar story in China, where I need to upgrade my units if I am to even hope to find a way though the Great Wall of Chinese troops.

von Kuchler and von Bock's army groups are back on the march. von Kuckler fails, just, to take Riga, while Gomel is removed of defenders (but can't be occupied. Elsewhere its a case of building up for the offensives against the next strongpoints.

Meanwhile in the south, the fortress of Sevastopol falls to a Romanian/German force. Taganrog is captured by the Romanian I Corps.

Things are quieter in China as the need to upgrade takes two turns - including breaking the engagement. However, there was time to destroy a Chinese army west of Suchow.

The R+R starts to pay off. Both Terauchi and Itaguchi push forward, inflicting some losses on a number of units as well as destroying one.

In the south, Okamura's forces can't take Nanning but the defenders are emptied from the city.

In the northern USSR Riga falls, as does Vitebsk. Smolensk will be a tougher nut to crack - requiring the defended Bryansk and Orel (out of picture) to be captured first.

In the south, von Leeb pushes east in order to try and destroy whatever is west of the great Don bend.

A better turn for the Japanese. Despite aircraft being grounded, Terauchi's forces have pushed into the Chinese defensive line.

Meanwhile to the south, Itaguchi's troops destroyed a Chinese corps and III Corps was ordered into the junction between the two Chinese army groups.

To the south, Okamura's forces finally take Nanning. Importantly, the two Chinese corps nearby have been shot up.

In the Soviet Union I guess I will end up behind real life thanks to the awful start I got in the north, where I never had anywhere near enough units. Probably won't get quite as near to Moscow either - although I have taken Sevastopol.
