RE: MK 14s

Post by neuromancer »

Don't know when or if they become better (in the game).

I've had them work, but I had the same annoyance as they did historically when a Gato fired on a CV, and the torps didn't miss, there was just no notice at all. I have assumed those to be impacts without detonation.

And most of the time that is what I get.

Very annoying.

When I get tired of my Gatos doing 'other things', or no longer have other things for them to do, I will probably send them off on patrol again (even if they only occassionally work, its still better than nothing). But mostly I rely on my S boats.

Unfortunately(I'm IJN) they do seem to get better in early '43. If the sub commanders can get experience picking off damaged ships and transports they seem to start to do very well indeed[:@].

So don't give up hope. Keep plugging away and find some easy pickings.

War

Flood fixed, power still out....
72 betties, 60 zeros hit townsville
No losses, just 2 hits[8|]

The fleet approaches wunpunko.
BBs still moving into the coral sea

Where will wobbly be?

stung

Post by herbieh »

Nice to know I can get wobbly to react.
B17s hit PM in a ineffectual night raid in retaliation.
Cooktown is supplied up, all his LBA must be east
But the real action is over at wunpunko, the singlr AP begins unloading, surrounded by Cas .
B26s and Hudsons strike, no hits, and chew flak
144 regiment loads at nevea for fast transport to lunganville
Mutsu and nagato sail from truk

Wobbly is trying to hide, KB is in full view one hex from wunpunko, cap 40%
Going to have a heart attack at this rate.
Luandry repairs costing nearly 5 grand![X(][X(][X(][X(][:@]

worse than a long lance into a CV[:'(]

got that wrong

Post by herbieh »

Well wobbly lba , 70 a/c hit cairns, 1 port supply hit, but the crippled DD uzuki sunk.
Over at wunpunko the AP makes a run for it, still surrounded by ships, while the heavies are ordered to retire several hexes north, and lurk some more.
Trying to get more base forces south, irau and lunga are building up. Nevea is gaining A/c

some of 144 regiment safely into lunganville, another 2 runs into there this turn coming, will wobbly react?
Other major efforts are stock PM with supplies!

Mission accomplished?

Post by herbieh »

Another day, another million bombs unloaded on Cairns
My betties hit chartertown, one lousy hit.
The returns at the moment are pathetic!

Wunpunko is captured
another load of troops land lunganville, more ordered tonight.
I have played 6 dummie head to heads of this situation over the last few nights, in each one if I send my CVs into noumea I get hammered by LBA, so he can come to me now, the south ward advance is finished

now we start laying traps[8|]

Another day, another bomb or two

Post by herbieh »

Yet more craters cairns.
barges heading in, more cockies for him to kill.
Still trying to get base forces forward to irau and nevea, irau nearly size 3, nevea size 2
lunga, well they've decided where the strip might go I think![X(]
Cvs will lurk a few more days yet, covering convoys into irau

@bbs and escorts leave rabual , close cover for a very large convoy to PM

Wobbly still cowers in his hole.

retiring

Post by herbieh »

No action today, retiring the CVs back to shortlands, time for some rest and recreation, 45 days until major troop reinforcements. Marines arrive 4 days time, dont think wobbly will attack just yet. he must have 6 CVs now, time to wait, and keep hardening the defences. Grabbing real estate cheaply is giving a nice point bonus, despite sinking only 3 ships so far, (Ive lost 27, 12 to subs!) Im nearly 4500 points up.
ship losses might seem lop sided, but Im the one who has exposed myself.
Nothing major yet.
Not sure what to do yet.

abandoned

Post by herbieh »

High command cancels any more barge runs to OZ, as over a dozen are sunk at cairns.
Sorry guys, Ill try to get a small fast transport to PM for you!
Cvs ect retiring to shortlands, where a big re organisation is planned for the fleet
Biggest worry is no startegic reserve of troops, its 45 days until 2 new divcisions arrive, I need them for a counter attack
So I will have to lurk a lot with KB of iether irau or nevea for a while trying to delay the wobbly come back, and while looking for an opening
Im over 5000 points ahead, kill a couple of CVs and the lead will be very good.
Retirement to shortland very much fuel driven, need to rebuild stocks fast.

quiet

Post by herbieh »

Little to report today, last night emilys did a night port attack on noumea just for an experiment, dont think they hit anything.
So far we have both lost less than a dozen planes each.

Boy are we slack![8|]
Unloading more base troops at irau, lunga.
Detached 4 dds, and a tanker to GG, for a fast transport set up to cairns..

That made me laugh, yes, the south pacific is so quiet its not funny, even wobblys subs have gone to sleep
ITS ALL HIS FAULT[:@][:@][:D]
He goes and hides in holes where he knows Ill only get a blood nose, while I run around seeking battle everywhere, only to find abandoned bases.
The only way I could have beaten his Im going to pull it all back to auto victory bases was if I did the gamey, load it all for noumea or brissy 1st turn tactic, but I was far toooooo sloooowwwwww on the uptake of his tactic.

So now Im stuck, just by default Im on the counter attack tactic.
Still, I will continue to go fishing.

So (after another turn of not much), a single transport , surrounded with warships will sail to espirito, with KB lurking behind, and some BBs as well.
The entire fleet is at shortlands, and fuel is a real problem, I must maintain some reserve
To sum up THIS BORING GAME IS ALL HIS FAULT< BUT I AINT GOING TO DO ANYTHING RASH JUST FOR THE FANS[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

With him going turtle like that, I wouldn't expect a Noumea or Brisbane attack to be very successful. Of course you didn't know that, but in retrospect I think you can be glad you didn't try it.

Probably best you can do is grab every piece of real estate you can, fortify, and now wait for him to come to you.

- - - - -

Of course, my advice isn't worth the electrons its made up of. My experience wiuth this game isn't very great, and no very successful.

wobbly

Post by herbieh »

wobbly plays for keeps, Im sure he,d love me to smack my brains out on noumea brick wall. As for rea estate Ive got it all that can be grabbed without major battle on his ground.grrrr
So, we go for the lure and deception trick again..... (reminds me of Waterloo, the french came at us the same old way, and we beat them the same old way).
Another 'invasion force" of 1ap, 4apds, with cas and cls and dds packed about it will sail with half a regiment to lunganville, covered by the death star, and one large, one small surface task force set on react.
Because of fuel problems, some BBs, and Tanaka's new TF will remain at shortland
Tanaka has a herbie san special, 6Cas, 2CLs, 6 dds, he's my fast transport counter attack force that went so close last game to kicking wobbly out of GG.
This report covers 3 days of play
LBA begins hitting cooktown again( back from noumea?), I lost a sub of noumea, and my minesweepers cleared lunganville, although I notice a new field near tulgia, cheeky sod.

Ok , any ideas how to kill a turtle, especially one armed with 100s of LBA[8|]

He suckered me in the other day.....he was using CVLs to cover the landing at Townsville. I moved up to hit him and I hit him hard.......then his CVs came in behind me.......lost threeCVs.....he had his CV force deep in the Coral Sea dead in the water I think. I never saw it coming.

Herbie san tries to eat semi raw fish cakes and ends up sick for 5 days, war finally resumes today.
His LBA hits cairns today.
Meanwhile I sight a force of DDs and PGs?, or is it CA's and DDs south of lunganville, is he hunting subs?, or something more sinister[8|]
A force of 3CL, 4 dd is ordered north of lunganville set to react

KB is floating down slowly from Munda, waiting for its transport convoy to finish loading.
Irau and Nevea are getting very close to size 3, and lunga is building fast now, all 3 bases groaning with base troops.
Changed mind about PM, transferring bulk of engineers and base forces to Lea, very skittish of B17s closing the place with heaps of planes on it.

I finally do feel a battle brewing[8|]

2 turns in one night

Post by herbieh »

How I like getting multiple turns in.
7/18/42
score 7464 to 2543
and wobbly is on the move, ship sightings of brissy as a task force dodges my subs
I have ordered KB to drift into the coral sea and wait, I feel after yet another LBA of cairns that its the 1st target.
4 DDs set to react float down from GG.
No serious resistance planned yet, just using aussie bases as trip wires, and intelligence gathering.
troops for lunganville still loading.
I need 30 days more then major air, land reinforcements will make my position very strong.

You should still be stronger than him over all, but he has focused his strength down to a very small area to counter your strength.

You cannot wait too long, he's getting stronger every day too.

Normally I would say hit and run 'spear thrusts'. But I think you could probably pull off a 'hammer blow' somewhere still.

The problem is, he isn't going to come out so you can deliver that hammer blow against his most critical assets (ships). At least not until he feels good and ready.

Although it sounds like he may be ready for at least a serious skirmish.

action at last

Post by herbieh »

Wobbly sends at least 2 CVs out of noumea north, and launches a raid on the 1st of the island chain
sub i-26 is hit by a dauntless,poo.
As usual his timing is good, Ive just got a million barges about to crawl into lunganville, bet they go next turn[:@]
However for all that I remain very suss about those ships that simultanousely sailed from brissy, I feel this is a bit of a fient, so my CVs will continue to drift down towrds townsville, they are 2 hexes south of the reef to the east of GG, moving at cruising speed, fuel trying to keep up.
4dds lurking north of cooktown, trip wire
Maybe I can catch me a nice fat fast transport run into cairns?

Clearing the oceans of shipping near lunganville
27 vals, 54 zeros at nevea
63 nells, 54 zeros at irau
27 zeros, 36 oscars at lunga, will wobbly let me get a shot in?
Troops at espirito bury emporers flag for safe keeping, and sharpen swords.

Trying to build sag sag at the moment, betties scattered higgly piggly all over 8th army command area[:'(]

Nice to see wobbly trying to counter attack so early in the game, he over committed big time last game, and thats what Im hoping for in this one.[;)]
