ORIGINAL: Von RomAre there any "must" buy DVD movies on your list?

Unfortunately I have about 300 must buys which I've bought! [X(]

One of the most recent must buys I bought was the Stanley Kubrick collection (remastered) from DVD Planet.
As a devious soul I use Amazon mainly for its great search capabilities and use DVD Planet for the actual ordering,
since it's always cheaper. Still, I buy way too much stuff from Amazon too.

I don't know how old you are or what your interests are, so I can't really recommend anything. However, if
you are older -- say 35 and up -- and are used to some of the crappy VHS versions of movies, you will be
amazed by most DVD versions of the same. I'm mainly into horror, fantasy, war, and film noir -- all these movies
benefit greatly from DVD format. Now if only I could wrest control of the big TV from my wife!!! Argh.

I'm over 35 - heheh

Yes, there is quite a difference between the VHS and DVD copies of the same movie. I have enjoyed the DVD verisons of the movies I've watched over the years, and they do indeed seem to be a new experience.

Cheers!

I have this odd habit of buying DVD's and never watching them.

Whenever I get the urge, I realize that since I own them I can watch them anytime. But there might be a good movie I don't own NOW on TV that I can only watch now.

I know, its sad and rather pathetic.

But when that magical day comes when I have 'free time', I'll watch one or more of the following from my collection:

Fog of War
Goodfellas
The Deer Hunter
The Killing Fields
Raging Bull
Taxi Driver
The Thin Blue Line
Last of the Mohicans
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Patton (That's right, I like Patton so back off!)
Ronin
The Usual Suspects

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head but I have many more that have faded into obscurity.

Also, I own the complete 26 hour set of The World at War and I often end up throwing one of those tapes in instead.

I find most of the programs on TV are worthless anyway, so having a lot of backups (in the form of movies and documentaries) sure helps.

I must have a ton of war documentaries that I have taped off the TV over the years - so many that I haven't found the time to watch some of them. But it's nice to know they are there when I want something good to watch - heheh

I liked the movie Patton - I'm surprised that movie was even made. Interesting that Bradley (who despised Patton) was an advisor on the movie. I wonder how that skewed things?

BTW, has anyone seen the DVD release of "The Winds of War" with Robert Mitchum? I saw it on TV many moons ago, but I can't remember how good it was.

Alright, I may be slagged for this one, but I tend to watch my DVDs repeatedly, and one of my all-time favorites (don't laugh) is "Dances With Wolves". Despite what you may think about Kevin Costner personally, the sheer beauty of this film never ceases to amaze me.

I also have a few favourites that I watch almost every year - there is a certain quality to them that few films seem to possess, such as: Spartacus, Braveheart, Last of the Mochicans, Patton, A Few Good Men, Kelly's Heroes, The Great Escape, etc, etc. . .

One of the best documentaries that the History Channel showed was "Tanks!". Excellent program. There must have been 10-12 episodes in the series (fortunately I taped it). Some of the best tank footage/war footage I have seen.

My problem is I have fricken Tivo and about 180 chanels

I've always got someting on backup.
Either 24, The Shield, Tough Crowd, Dennis Miller,

I used to love Line of Fire and The Job and Family Guy (what beautiful, sick twisted humor)
but they all got pulled because they were too good.

Plus, I'm a Formula 1 junkie. Haven't missed a race in 4 years. I'm fascinated by the physics of racing.
I like watching Shumi win too. He's the classiest superstar in sports now that Barry Sanders has retired.

And don't even get me started on football.

So after all that is out of the way, I squeeze in a movie.

But remember, DVD's last forever... [:)]

I would like to get Kurosawa's "Ran". The pure beauty of his photography and the samurai battles are works of art.

I ordered this one from Canada today since it's a favorite from my childhood. No Euro version yet so I had to get the NA version. Great movie except for some [:o] 80's dancing [:D]

I noticed that "Crossfire" on CNN was cut from 1 hr down to 30 minutes. It was one of the few shows that actually debated the issues and took a critical look at the news and political figures of the day.

Well, well, well. . .

I continue to be surprised by Hollywood [:)]

Filming will start soon on the epic movie "Hannibal" with Vin Diesel in the staring role.

This movie is based upon the life of the Carthaginian general, Hannibal Barca, who in the third century B.C. (218 B.C., specifically) famously led an army of elephants through the Alps in an attempt to attack Rome. More specifically, this movie is being adapted from the novel, "Hannibal," by Ross Leckie about Hannibal.

When his father is killed by the Romans, Hannibal (Diesel), a young man from the ruling clans of the city of Carthage on the Mediterranean shore of North Africa, makes an oath of vengeance against Rome. Dedicating his life to fulfilling that challenge, Hannibal becomes a general by the time he's in his mid-20s, and with an army of 100,000 committed to his goal, he sets out to bring Rome down, first by conquering Spain, and then by setting loose a surprise (and famous) attack on Italy by way of the Alps, with an array of forces that included war-trained elephants. This movie shows how far a son can be willing to go to avenge the death of his father.

LOS ANGELES -- While making the promotional rounds for his extreme sport action picture XXX, actor Vin Diesel took a moment to talk about his next film role, as famed Carthaginian general Hannibal in the film project of the same name.

“He’s a character I’ve always wanted to play, and not unlike how Mel Gibson wanted to play the Wallace character in Braveheart,” Diesel enthusiastically explains. “He redefined war strategies. He was for the 3rd century B.C. -- for that whole era -- he was the classic underdog. He was the only guy who thought of attacking Rome. And he did it in a shrewd way.”

“I can go on for hours talking about how fascinating he is,” adds Diesel about the legendary general who used elephants to cross the Alps in a bid to bring down the Roman Empire. The red-hot actor will begin shooting the planned epic in the spring of 2003.

Hannibal is based Ross Leckie’s 1996 fictional autobiography that follows Hannibal from his boyhood, to his assaults on Rome, and finally his death on the Greek island of Bithynia. The novel is being adapted for the screen by David (Gladiator) Franzoni.

Looks like there will be lots of historical epics hitting the theatres this fall and next year [:D]

There was a special at A & B Sound: buy two DVDs for the price of one, so out of the choices provided, I picked up "The Great Escape" and "Rocky" (the original).

I must say that "Rocky" still holds up well after all these years. The movie was made for a few hundred thousand dollars; most of the actors were unknown; and there was no computer animation or major violence.

The entire movie rested on the script and the characters (imagine that) - heheh

I also noticed that the movie has a great sense of place and time: cold, dreary exteriors in some run-down neighbourhood in some off-beat section of Philadelphia. . .

Included on the DVD is a 28 minute discussion of the movie by Sylvester Stallone. It is worth seeing. Even today, you can tell that Rocky is his favourite character: the down-and-out loser who is given a once-in-a-life-time shot at the big time.

Still a great film. . .

Didz, my friend, I got Sergei Bondarchuk's film set from the public library today. It is five DVDs, one of which is a background and "making of" bonus disc. I've never seen this, and I have a three-day weekend in which to soak it all in. The sections that Soviet censors previously excised have all been restored.

I will tell you that I've seen "Alexander Nevsky", and Russian film-makers know how to make an epic production.

Quickly, the packaging of this is magnificent, with bonus materials on every DVD, and the movie is subtitled in FOURTEEN different languages.

Disc one is "Andrei Bolkonsky, parts 1 & 2"
Disc two is "Natasha Rostova"
Disc three is "1812"
Disc four is "Pierre Bezukhov"
Disc five is additional bonus material

Total running time is well over six hours.

Its time for a remake of the "300 Spartans". They've done "Troy" and the "Alamo" numerous times in the movies and TV so why not this famous "Last Stand"? I would like to see "40 Days of Musa Dagh" done as a famous defense.
