I live on Oahu for 11 years and spent quite a bit of time on the Kaneohe side. We had a hill on the back of our house and I would go hiking up it. There is a double bunker left over from WW2 that overlooks Kaneohe Marine Corps airbase I would go and play there when I was a kid. In fact when I was 11 I met a F-4 pilot who flew for VMF-235. His name was Peyton and one weekend he took me to his sqadron and gave me a tour. He let me sit in the pilots seat of one of the Phantoms. Talk about a real thrill at the time.

Yeah they shut it down but after sept 11 they started spinning it back up. The housing was sold and refurbished though. And the Hideaway club is still there and boomin' on the weekends.

That I don't know about. I spent most of my time in either Wahiawa with some friends at some keggers or down in waikiki cruising the tourists. Got married, stopped hanging out down there, started playing these wargames. Is this a trend? haha. Here I sit in Texas. Man I love it here too though. Favorite haunts in wakiki were Moose's, Murphy's, the outside bar at Hale Koa too.

Haha. Well I am 6'5". I walked into the red lion one time, smashed my head on the top of the doorway, began to bleed and never went back. Ooo. Mustn't forget Magoo's pizza. cheap pizza and 5 dollar pitchers of....pretty much everything. Longboard Lager was the bomb.

I was more of a bourbon and coke man in those days.

Thanks for sharing your vacation pics, Nikademus.

At the risk of partially hijacking Nik's thread I spent several weeks on a road trip around the US a few months ago. I made some stops at various military museums and monuments, including Freedom Point in South Carolina where the second Yorktown is. I posted my journal and a number of pictures I took on the trip on a friend's website. Here's the URL for anyone interested.

View of Number 3 barbette as seen from the memorial. I am standing right in front of where the ship's mainmast stub is located, looking towards the stern.

I have this EXACT same picture![:)]

Look at the sign extending above the wreckage. There is a tall white condo building in the background, way off in Aiea/Pearlridge. To the left is a shorter, brownish building. I lived on the 25th floor of that one, facing PH, for two years. The Memorial was out my lanai glass door 24/7. I have some pix from 1985 of the Enterprise maneuvering around Ford I., as well as some of the New Jersey when she was in commission, doing the same. Never a dull moment out the window.
