New Year's 1942
December 31, 1941-January 1, 1942
New Years Eve--1941
Central Pacific
Midway As I feared, I do not have the strength to take Midway. Close but not quite enough. I order the rest of the Aviation Regiment at Wake to load and move to Midway. Already have a large Nvl Guard Force on the way. Between the two groups, it should finish off the Marines.
Shokaku and Zuikaku are headed to a position NE of Midway to act as cover.
SE Pacific
Capture Wewak, NG
Landing at Hansa, NG
Landing at Gili-Gili, NG This invasion secures a base that will be expanded for future operations.
Lae, NG Expansion of the AF continues. I have the AF at about 50% to Lvl 2. As soon as it is at Lvl 2 and I can fly LR CAP from it, then the Port Moresby Invasion Force will sail from Rabaul. I have a Chutai of Zeros there as well as a Chutai of Mavis.

Eastern DEI
Koepang I bombard Koepang with 2BB (Yamashiro and Fuso) twice during the night and day. Total damage is respectable: 649 Cas, 7G, 1V, 1 bomber, and AF/Pt damage. Was hoping to find Force Z and/or shipping here…
Dili Start landing there.
Balikpapan Attack base with 13Z and 3B and do 10 cas plus damage to AF. His Air there tries to attack the approaching 38th Inf Div Invasion TF with 5F and 18TB. I have 13Z on CAP and they shot down a total of 7 TB for no damage.
Western DEI
Kuching Those annoying Swordfish strike twice during the day putting a single TT into an AK and PG.
Malaya
Johore Bharu A Naval Bombardment by 3BB does 537 Cas, 6G, 1V, and destroys a Buffalo.
Singapore 14B hit AF and lose 2 to AA.
Continue to rest my Malaya bombers. They have been taking casualties and need to rebuild their morale some.
Burma
Rangoon A STF sweeps into the area and DD Asashio manages to hit a mine. While tied up in the minefield, 2 PT Boats sweep in. They are sunk but not before they finish my DD with a TT hit. During the day I sweep Rangoon with 53Z vs. 8 Hurricanes--I lose 3Z for 7 Hurricanes.
Moulmein Allied Bombardment causes 48 Jap Cas
Bangkok 33rd Inf Div launches an attack against the two Burma Brigades that were besieging the city! Shock Attack gets 1864-1--25 Jap Cas, 2G, and 1V for 181 Cas and 6G. I ordered the Inf Div to pursue after the Shock Attack so they follow the retreating units. Might be able to break-up the logjam at Moulmein this way…
China
Changsha Air Attack by 21F and 32B inflict 70 Cas and AF damage. A Japanese Bombardment adds another 304 Chin Cas and 1G.
Homan Air Attack by 6F and 51B do 11 Cas and AF. Bombardment adds 52 Cas and 1G.
50,27 Air Attack 31B and 8DB do 44 Cas and 1G. An attack by my ground forces yields 1-1: 797 Chin Cas and 19G vs. 341 Jap Cas and 13G.

January 42 Production
As a part of my AAR, I want to post my industrial numbers at the start of every month. Please take a look and ask any question that may come to mind.
In my first campaign against Moses, I expanded WAY TOO FAST and everything ground to a halt when we ended the campaign in early-1943. My Campaign against Wolfpack is now in August 1943 and my economy is humming along nicely. I HOPE that I have learned something.
January 1942 Production Numbers:
Statistics:
Supply 1,946,025
Fuel 4,326,729
Manpower 793 (113,913)
Heavy Industry 13,430 (25,464)
Resources 14,498 (1,647,644)
Oil 1,737 (1,672,027)
Shipyards:
Naval 1,243 (14)
Merchant 1,003 (4)
Shipyard Repair 727
Military Equipment:
Armament 574 (19,346)
Vehicles 176 (1,510)
Aircraft Engines 1,582
Aircraft Assembly 632 (74-Rd)
Aircraft Production:
A6M2 168 Target 200/Month
Oscar 62 Target 100/Month
Val 41 50/Month
Kate 28 40/Month
Sally 20 30/Month
Helen 78 80/Month
Betty 46 80/Month
C5M (Babs) 4 Phasing out slowly
Dinah 31 40/Month
Emily 15 25/Month
Alf 23 20/Month
Rufe 14 Will build just enough…
Glen 8 Got to keep SS going…
Jake 11 Teams with Alf for Fleet
Tina 26 30/Month LOVE IT!
Sally Transport 5 Will phase out
Mavis Transport 8 Will keep in low #s
Topsy 10 Useful but prefer Tinas
A note of Fighter Research, I have shifted ALL Fighter research to Tojo and Tony. I hope to get them a month or two earlier. I’ve boosted Jack research a little. Like that plane more then the Zeros for my IJN-Land-Based Units.

I hate those 3 planes. [;)]
I have a couple disrelated questions. How soon do you plan to go after Port Moresby? Did you ever find a replacement player to take over the ground war?
RE: January 42 Production
I am currently nearly 3 weeks behind with my AAR. If I could scan in my large quantity of notes, I would do it so people could read; however, cannot do that. Have most of Saturday, prior to work, off and I hope to get caught up then.
To answer your two questions:
1. I am in the process (January 20th is current turn) of landing at PM as well as New Caledonia.
2. NO--I did not find a replacement player! Are you interested? Email me at jrc_3@msn.com.
I LOVE Tony/Tojo/Jack! Great planes that hold their own through 1943...

RE: January 42 Production
As an Allied player, I have always feared a quick grab of Gili Gili and it built up (I think it can go to a size 6 AF) along with Lae to isolate PM. With Betty/Nell and some Zeros at Gili Gili, you close off PM and make naval movement in that part of the Coral Sea very dangerous. [&o][&o]

RE: January 42 Production
I was merely curious when I posted, but since you asked, I realized that I am interested. (I'm no Moses but I've mostly been pleased with my results in ground combat. And this seems like a fun game.) However, I can't commit to another game right now.
In 6-8 weeks I might have some more free time. Don't wait for me if you get another offer but I could likely pick up the gauntlet then. BTW, what's the turn rate in this game? (Seems to be about a turn a day.)
In the meantime, good luck. [:)]

RE: January 42 Production
At the rate I have been getting responses, 6-8 weeks might be OK. You are correct that we average a turn a day. If serious as to playing, you would be most welcome!
Let me know!
As to the other posting. I agree. Gili-Gili, if grabbed early, can be a VERY dangerous base. Give me PM and GG, plus Lae, and I can hold out for quite a while against Allied Air Power!

January 2-9, 1942
Since I am so far behind with my AAR, I am going to try and do several week-long installments to get caught up.
January 2--January 9, 1942
Central Pacific
Midway I continue to move two convoys towards Midway. They will bring enough troops to wipeout that garrison. Once they are there, there will be 3 large Naval Guard units and a complete Aviation Regiment.
After letting my troops recover and lower their disruption, I try a Shock Attack on the 8th and get a 2-1. I manage to drop the Forts from 3-to-1, take 313 Cas and 6 Guns for 236 Marines and 12 Guns.
During this week, Shokaku and Zuikaku are sitting two hexes SW of Midway in case a Relief Force is sent. They then head for Kwajalein for rest and link-up with CVL Shoho.
KB-1 Akagi and Kaga have done their duty, they have sunk a few vessels but more importantly, they have prevented the initial Relief Convoys from sailing from the West Coast for over a month. They begin to move slowly South and will then head for Baker Island to cover the Canton Invasion which scheduled for about February 10th.
Sub Ops
January 5th The damaged I-26 is pasted by an ASW Group near PH by 7DC and sinks.
There are several ASW attacks on my SS near the West Coast with no results.
North Pacific (new Theatre)
Begin loading the Kiska and Attu Invasion Forces. There are minor forces in use here: 4 NLF, 1 Construction Batn, a CD unit for Kiska, and an IJNAF BF. Until I decide otherwise, they will develop the two Northern Islands and protect my Northern Flank.
SE Pacific
Things are beginning to heat up in this region of the Pacific.
I capture the following locations: Madang, Admiralty Islands, Saidor, LUGANVILLE, and Emirau Island. Have nearly all of New Guinea and am picking up the bases along the Solomon Chain.
Grabbing Luganville is important for the capture of New Caledonia. I land an Engineer and BF unit to expand the facilities so I can cover the next invasion. A Zero Daitai immediately flies in and I have a Val Daitai that should deploy within about 10 days.
I spot shipping at Noumea and send my Cover Force down there to investigate. The 4CA, 2CL, and 8 DD don’t catch anything but are bombed by a few Hudsons. I have a DD hit a mine near at Noumea and it is ordered to limp back to Luganville. Could REALLY use a Size 3 Port a little closer to this area!
Philippines
I stage regular raids on Manila and Clark every other day. There are usually about 50 bombers that hit Manila and 20 attacking Clark. These raids yield about 75-100 Cas, a few Guns, and damage to the AFs each time.
Tuguegarao Capture this town finally on January 2nd. I take fairly light Cas: 263 and 2 Guns for 177 Phil Cas and 3 Guns.
Cotabato Capture the town on January 3rd for hardly any Cas. I also sink a pair of PT boats, with 3 Jap DD, there on the same.
Luzon With forces present, I will move to Lingayen and grab that. Nothing more will take place until Singapore’s troops are transferred and I can finish these American and Philippinos off!
Mindanao There are refugees sitting on Mindanao and I will dispose of them before transferring all my units elsewhere.
Eastern DEI
This is the most active Theatre of Operations during this time! Lots of punching and counterpunching going on. I take, and inflict, some real losses here.
Other then at Timor, this is the action:
Balikpapan Capture this important base on January 3rd. It is lightly damaged and resource centers aren’t even touched! :>
Drive survivors from Balikpapan with 2 Tank Regiments towards the end of Borneo. Using the Shock Attack: Persue option, I quickly move down the road following them.
Samarinda Capture on January 6th.
Tawi-Tawi Capture on January 7th.
Makassar Begin Landing there to Cover eastern Java Operations.
TIMOR
Koepang I cannot suppress this AF! It is driving me nuts. Because I cannot, my opponents are staging damaging attacks from the AF on my AP-AK-Light Forces in the area.
Dili Land the Koepang Invasion Force there and put a Daitai of Zeros on the AF. They, at least, shot down some planes. I am desperately short of FUEL! Normally I plan ahead pretty well but somehow missed the bus here. Scratch together all I can and move it towards Dili.
Lautem Start Landing there on the 2nd and capture the base on January 4th--get 1921 POWs. Place a Chutai of Zeros here as well as two Recon Chutai of Mavis.
Naval Action around Timor:
Air--As alluded, I have a lot of shipping damaged by small air raids from Darwin and Koepang.
Most serious is a TT hit to BB Yamashiro on the 2nd which forces it to miss the battle on the next day. Also lose DD Tokitsukaze to TB northeast of Java. On the 9th (after the Second Battle of Koepang) BB Yamashiro takes ANOTHER TT! She will head home as soon as pumped out (again).
The First Naval Battle of Koepang--January 3rd
Force Z attacks with Prince of Wales, Repulse, 3CL, and 10DD. They are opposed by BB Fuso, CA, 2CL, and 4DD. The battle goes for three gunnery rounds and when the smoke breaks, BB Fuso sinks while the Allies lose CL De Ruyter and DD Paul Jones and Barker. Prince of Wales is hit pretty hard for Sys damage.
Second Naval Battle of Koepang--January 8th
Force Z comes back looking for trouble! Repulse, 2CL and 12DD vs. BB Yamashiro (pumped out from the TT hit but FULL of fight!), 2CA, 3CL, and 10DD. There are two separate battles--the first lasts three gunnery rounds and the second goes for one. The Allies lose DD Parrott, Bulmer, and Banckert, have CL Java (sinks next day) and 5 more DD heavily damaged, for little cost to the Japanese Fleet. Repulse, yet again, get away with only a few large-caliber hits from my BB!
Darwin Raid On the 9th, I have a raiding TF catch 3TK near Darwin and sink ALL of them.
Western DEI
Sandakan Capture on January 2nd.
Teloekbetoeng, Sum Capture on January 6th.
Singkawang Capture on January 9th.
There is a lot of air action here. I work to neutralize his western Java AF while he does the same to Palembang. WE trade some pretty good blows. I find out the AVG (WHAT THE HELL??!!) is in Java! After a week of heavy engagement, Palembang is heavily damaged but operational (most of his B-17s are in Java) and I have put Batavia out-of-business. I average shooting down 4-1 in my favor. I am using 3 Daitai of Zeros and 1 Daitai of Oscars for aerial dog fighting.
KB-3 spends a couple days at Palembang refueling and watching this aerial battle before departing for south-of-Java operations again.
I-160 sinks DD Stronghold off of Soerabaja on the 4th.
Malaya
Final phase of Singapore Campaign is underway.
Johore Bharu is captured on January 3rd.
Singapore FALLS on January 8th! Only 1 week behind my schedule of operations--not bad! Over 76,000 POWs fall into Japanese hands. The Port and AF Service are moderately damaged (60 & 34), Repair yard is OK, and there is 47,000 Supply as well as 42,000 Fuel there. BANZAI!
A will allow Air Unit’s a few days to rest, as well as ground units, and then redeployment shall begin…
Burma
Rangoon Begin pounding the AF to drive him farther north. By the end of the week, he starts to relocate planes to Mandalay.
Moulmein Heavy air action and bombardments that yield some casualties but no movement.
Bangkok 33rd Inf Div launches an attack due north in pursuit of those two units that threatened Bangkok. Using the Pursuit function, I quickly move northwards and re-take Krung Thep (Jan 2nd) and Rahaeng (Jan 8th). This move forces him to start pulling out of the bogged down Moulmein Battle. It is nice to see the Allied strategy reversed by driving up the road they came down!
Naval Action--I send several raiding TF to Chandpur, Akyab, and Diamond Harbor during this time: CA Atago and Takao sink 2 AK at Chandpur.
My SS are active also: I-158 sinks an AK at Rangoon.
China
Changsha I start to wear down the Forts here by reducing them from 3 to 2. Air battles here of little consequence.
Homan Should take this city pretty quickly. Once taken, troops here will redeploy to strengthen Changsha attack.
Yenen Totally bogged down. I have troops east of Yenen, SE of Yenen, and about to make the River Crossing North of the city. Should see some movement here sometime soon…
Ships Sunk
Japanese 1AK, 3AP, 1TK, 5PC, 1APD, 2DD, 2CL--Kitakami and Nagara, and 1BB--Fuso.
Allied 2AK, 3TK, 5PT, 6DD, and 3CL--De Ruyter, CLAA Ceres, and Java
Thoughts
My inability to grab Koepang quickly led me to take attritional losses that were unnecessary (read that to mean BB Fuso). I tried to grab it on the fly and that failed terribly! I will use an entire Infantry Division from Balikpapan to reduce it.
Am happy that the “Singapore First” strategy worked! By sending six Infantry Divisions into that fight, the Allies didn’t have a chance. Thank you Moses for that idea!
The SE Pacific is due to get interesting. My invasion convoys for PM and Noumea will start moving soon--as soon as I have LRCAP to cover--and I hope to take these quickly. KB-2 (Shokaku/Zuikaku) will soon be reinforced with CVL Shoho and they will move down to aide the PM and Noumea Operations.
Any comments to this week of operations? I will try to add another week’s report tomorrow!

BB Fuso sinks
Ouch! [:(]
Singapore FALLS on January 8th! Only 1 week behind my schedule of operations--not bad!
Even if it was behind your schedule I'd say that was damn good. Playing allies I'd be very disturbed if I lost Singers that early.
Changsha I start to wear down the Forts here by reducing them from 3 to 2. Air battles here of little consequence.
Good news on the fort reduction.
Yenen Totally bogged down. I have troops east of Yenen, SE of Yenen, and about to make the River Crossing North of the city. Should see some movement here sometime soon…
Annoying, maybe, but certainly not disastrous IMO. I'd say keep enough to pin him there but concentrate on the south.
Again, good luck! [:)]
January 10-17, 1942
Here is how week two in January unfolded for the Japanese Empire.
January 10--January 17, 1942
Central Pacific
Midway On the 10th, my Aviation Regiment that was at Wake begins to land. He is mining the hex and I have an AK hit a mine. A large Naval Guard unit begins to land on the 12th and Midway FINALLY falls on the 15th! I get 2 Catalinas and 4808 POW.
US Subs are very active here. I have 3 AK hit by TT during this time (2 sink). In return, I damage 2 US SS with DC.
My SS continue to be active along the West Coast. I-21 is damaged by an ASW attack and is recalled. On January 17th I-23 does much better and sinks DD Gilmer prior to an ASW attack.
On the 15th, a freshly reinforced KB-2 departs Kwajalein. Shokaku, Zuikaku, and Shoho now pack 177 strike aircraft and are escorted by 2BC, 2CA and 6DD. They set sail for Port Moresby and Noumea to raise havoc and support the upcoming landings.
KB-1 Akagi and Kaga slowly work their way SW towards Baker Island. They are set on cruise for their speed so I can reduce wear-and-tear on the ships. CV Soryu is almost repaired back at the Home Islands and will rejoin this unit as a reinforcement. These CV will cover the Canton Invasion which scheduled for about February 10th.
North Pacific
Attu The Attu Invasion Force begins landings on the 17th. There is no opposition.
Kiska My Kiska Invasion Force will begin to land around the 20th.
SE Pacific
I capture the following locations: Sag Sag, Green Island, Arawe, Buka, Gasmata. I occupy Tassafaronga and Salamau. Landings starting at Shortlands and Buna.
Luganville--New Caledonia Action
My opponents launch several small air raids by a squadron of Hudsons operating out of Noumea. These are annoying! They damage CA Kinugasa and several AK/AP. My Zero Daitai shot down several and AA gets a few more.
Port Moresby
With Lae’s AF going to Size 2, I move another Daitai of Zeros there. This is important so they can cover the PM Invasion Force. I start them Sweeping PM. They tangle with a squadron of Wirraways every day and you can imagine the results. :> Nells/Bettys from Rabual hit several AK at PM.
On January 15th, I start loading the Invasion Forces for both PM and Noumea. The 4th Inf Div will land at PM and then move towards New Caledonia. The South Seas Detachment, with smaller support units, begins landing for Koumac on the NW tip of New Caledonia.
Am looking forward to KB-2 arriving to provide support to these two invasions.
Philippines
I stage regular raids on Manila and Clark every other day.
I capture Lingayen Bay on January 13th.
Mindanao I begin the final reduction of Allied troops on this island by cornering them in Hex 40,61. On the 14th two small BF surrender for a total of 1,095 POWs.
Reinforcements
The 48th and ??? Inf Div begin loading at Singapore for transport to Naga. With these two Divisions, I should be able to begin the final phase of the Philippine Campaign.
Eastern DEI
This area continues to be the most active and costly area of operations. I am stuck with 2/3 of Timor and do not have the ground strength to take Koepang yet. We both have significant naval forces present as well as air assets and there is some give-and-take in this location.
Makassar Captured on January 10th.
Banjarmasin Captured on January 15th.
Kendari Captured on January 16th.
Bulla Captured on January 17th.
TIMOR
Air Action--We have a number of aerial battles over this island. He strikes Lautem from Darwin and Dili from Koepang. I have Zeros present at each base for defense. Everyday of the week, Allied TB, FB, and B strike in small groups. Many are shot down but others get through and damage shipping.
Naval Action
Jan 10th--I raid Koepang and sink an AK, TK, and 3 PT. He attacks at Dili and I sink all 5 PT boats used in the attack.
Jan 11th--I get another AK and PT boat.
Jan 17th--I have reinforced my Surface assets here and they bombard Koepang. 3 BB, 4 CA, and 8 DD destroy a few aircraft, inflict nearly 800 Cas, destroy guns, and hit AF/Pt facilities.
I detail the Infantry Division that took Kendari to assault Koepang. They should easily accomplish this task…
Western DEI
Pontianak is captured on January 15th. Small air raids and SS attacks damage several ships here until I provide LR CAP.
I begin loading the Java Invasion Force at Singapore. Troops to be used are: 55th, 5th, and 18th Infantry Divisions as well as the 4th Eng Regiment. Nearly 70,000 men will land at Merak on the Western tip of Java.
Java (new Theatre)
They have concentrated their aerial assets here and we are trading blows. I have the Java Invasion loading at Singapore and both Paratrooper Regiments ready. Imperial HQ has set the goal of Feb 20th for Java to be eliminated.
Batavia Heavy raids from Palembang continue to hammer this base. They cannot use it and that helps the western side of the picture.
Bali This island proves to be a REAL mistake in my planning. Thinking I can grab the base fast, I send my AVs with some AP/AK in a convoy. They reach the target and get POUNDED by LBA! I lose 2 AV, an APD, 2 AP, and 2 AK. Grrrr….
Tjilitjap They are trying to load or unload troops and supplies here and my Betty/Nell force, as well as SS, make him pay. They lose 3-4 AK, 1 MSW, 1 AP and see at least another 10 ships damaged. Heavy aerial battles occur here as well as a significant fighter force flies CAP over the harbor. Many Allied planes fall!
Burma
As I foresaw last week, the charge of my 33rd Inf Div up the road from Bangkok to Rahaeng actually works! With threatened envelopment, the guys pull out of Moulmein and FLEE northwards!
Moulmein Captured on Jan 10th. Get a bomber on the ground.
Rangoon Captured on Jan 15th. Only two units in city when I attack: 35 Jap Cas, 2G, 1V for 4 Fighters and 1 Recon plane, 243 Cas, 5G, and 1V. Within the Base, I grab 25,000 Supply and 30,000 Fuel. The AF/Pt are slightly damaged (less then 25% each).
On-to-Mandalay! Send my troops north toward Pagan and Mandalay. I KNOW that I do not have the combat power to grab Mandalay yet but would like to ‘bounce’ the river and get on the other side. At that point, I wait for reinforcements from Singapore, Java, and the Philippines. There are already 3 Tank Regiments headed north to join the attack.
Naval Actions--I continue sending several raiding TF to Chandpur, Akyab, and Diamond Harbor.
Jan 10th Two hexes NW of Rangoon--2 CA and 2DD sink an AK
Jan 15th CA Takao and Atago w/2 DD sink 2AK and heavily damage 2 more off Chandpur
My SS are active also: I-158 sinks its second AK at Rangoon.
China
Changsha I continue to wear this city down by air attack, bombardment, and periodic ground attack. I knock the Forts down from 3 to 2 on the 12th. In a surprise, the Chinese attack me on the 16th, get 0-1, and lose 6,000 Cas and 144 Guns! They can do that all the time if they want!
Homan This target was already weak. I attack on the 11th and get 3-1. The Forts drop to 0 and I take the city on the 15th. This is the first Chinese city to fall! Will move troops from here to reinforce the Changsha and Yenen attack while still leaving enough to deter the Chinese from returning.
Yenen A real stalemate is happening here. I am too spread out with three separate thrusts heading toward the city. Expect reinforcements from Homan to break the deadlock.
Totals for the WEEK:
Ships Sunk
Japanese 1DD, 2APD, 2AV, 1PG, 1MSW, 6AP and 5AK
Allied 2DD, 1PG, 1MSW, 8PT, 9AK, and 1TK
Aircraft Losses
Japanese 11 F, 6 B, 10 TB, and 1 DB Total: 27 aircraft
Allied 33 F, 12 B, 3 TB, and 5 Recon Total: 53 aircraft
Thoughts
This felt like a better week.
I felt dumb for not providing any LR CAP for my Bali Invasion Force. That, coupled with underestimating Allied Air Power, led to nearly half my shipping losses for the week.
Burma has been easier then I anticipated. I think THEY think I have more there then I really do. There is one advantage to the Japanese at the beginning of the war. The Allied player EXPECTS to loss so they fall into a ‘Fortress/Bunker’ mentality and let the Japanese do more then they should. My campaign in Burma is one example and the Philippines are another. The Americans have had more firepower in the Philippines the entire campaign yet they immediately fell back to Clark-Manila-Bataan! I could have been driven out of the north or the south without TOO much trouble in December…
SE Operations truly commenced this week! My tentative timeline for operations coming up:
By February 1st: have PM, Efate, and all of New Caledonia (Noumea).
By February 15th: take Suva and Canton
By March 1st: have all islands in between
Projected long-term operations:
Operation Typhoon I shall conquer New Zealand by July 1st
Operation Southern Wind I shall conquer all of NW Australia (Perth-Alice Springs-Darwin) at the same time
I am entering the long-term planning stages for these operations NOW. Army and AF HQ will begin prepping as soon as they are available.
Any comments to this week of operations?

RE: January 20-26, 1942
Here is how week three in January unfolded for the Japanese Empire.
January 20--January 26, 1942
North Pacific
Kiska I begin landing troops there and capture the island on Jan 21st. While unloading, I hit the SS Nautilus with 3DC from an ASW attack.
Central Pacific
Midway After taking the island on the 15th, I have to continue MSW due to my opponents constantly adding the number there. I have an AK hit a mine for some damage.
US Subs are not seen this week.
My SS continue to be active along the West Coast. On the 22nd a 3DD ASW Group hits I-5 with 13 DC. Surprisingly she survives and heads for home.
KB-1 Akagi and Kaga slowly work their way SW towards Baker Island. They are set on cruise for their speed so I can reduce wear-and-tear on the ships. CV Soryu is moved from Nagasaki to Tokyo and has replaced her planes losses. System damage is down to 7 and I will let her sit a few more days before sending her to Baker to join her sisters.
SE Pacific
Things REALLY heat-up in this Theatre!
I capture the following locations: Shortlands, Buna, Koumac, and La Foa
Luganville
My opponents continue to use a solitary Hudson Squadron to strike at my forces. During the week these planes damage: 1 PG, 1AP, and nick a CL. My Zero Daitai is coverign the New Caledonia landings so I have no CAP here.
We do have some surface action! I have a Daitai of Vals that hit CA Minneapolis with 2B for the loss of 3 planes. That STF then comes in (minus the CA) and sinks a damaged DD at Luganville.
New Caledonia
As already mentioned, I capture to upper 2/3 of the island.
On the 22nd, I hit SS Tuna with 3DC and LBA near Koumac.
Another small STF of 3 American CA and 4DD attempt to interrupt my landing at Koumac on the 22nd. They are met by 4CA, 1CL, and 8DD in a daylight fight. My forces take some moderate damage in exchange for heavily damaging a CA and sinking 2DD. Would have liked more since I had the stronger force…
Port Moresby
I begin landing at PM on the 22nd as well (busy day). As the landing continues, I find that the convoy I had damaged coming in from Australia last week must have landed a second Aussie Brigade. My Inf Division is facing 2 Brigades and a Base Force. Make one attack that doesn’t get far and begin to organize a second lift to finish the job. There is little aerial resistance o my Zero CAP.
My Nells/Bettys hit an AP and MSW that try to escape from the harbor on the 22nd.
KB-2 Arrives! CarDiv5 and Shoho reach a point of interdiction between Australia and PM on the 22nd. They immediately spot the empty convoy that had left PM. In two large strikes (22Z, 44V,60K and 36Z, 48V,60K) they destroy the entire convoy of 2 MSW and 5AP! YUM!
Having spotted the Naval assets operating near New Caledonia, I move KB-2 in that direction with hopes of sinking a few warships.
Philippines
I continue to stage regular raids on Manila and Clark every other day.
Mindanao Another BF surrenders in hex 40,61 on the 21st and the Phil Inf Div there surrenders on the 22nd--total between the two is over 2,500 POWs. Mindanao is now clear of the enemy and my units immediately begin prepping for more operations in Luzon and elsewhere.
Eastern DEI
Bases captured: Lombok (23rd) and Pomala (25th)
Area Action
Jan 22th--East of Amboina, my ASW hits an SS with 2DC
Jan 23rd--Landing at Lombok is attacked by 15TB and have a MSW, AP, and 2AK hit by TT. Damned effective for only 15 planes! Sink a MSW trying to escape from this location. During the course of the week, Lombok is hit everyday with planes and I see another 4AP and 3AK damaged during the week.
Jan 24th--My bombers flying out of Koepang get into the action and hit a convoy NW of Darwin. In a combination attack by TB and Level Bombers, I hit an AK, AP and SINK AV Langley. Guess she is meant to be sunk here as she did in history!
Jan 25th--My opponents attack Balikpapan with 25 B-17. I lose 2B and a Zero as well as 123 Cas, 1G, and light AF damage.
Jan 26th--A small raiding TF built around CA Suzuya and 4DD find a convoy at Broome and sink an AK and PG.
Western DEI
Bases Captured: Sinkep Island (1077 POW on Jan 21st), Toboali (Jan 24th), and Jambi (Jan 25th)
Khota Bharu--Start hitting the base everyday with about 25 bombers. Imperial Guard Div is loading in Singapore and will land at Kuantan and then march up and rid me of those British troops.
Action:
Jan 21st--Teloekbetoeng AK/AP is hit by an Allied Raid and 2AP with 5AK are damaged.
Jan 23rd--Near Batavia, O21 puts 2TT into an AK and sinks it.
Jan 24th--At Palembang and Toboali, O21 and O23 hit and AK and PC each with a TT. The PC sinks and O21 takes 5DC for its effort.
Java (new Theatre)
There is heavy air action here throughout the week. My invasion force comes ashore and I have already detailed many of my opponents air strikes to Lombok and Tok…
Merak I chose to land my forces here and, with a Para Drop capture it on the same day--the 20th. Three full Inf Div and an Eng Regiment participate in the initial assault. As I land, everything the Allies have is thrown into hitting my massive convoy! I have 9 AP damaged by bombs and TT on the first day. My CAP manages to shot down 6F, 4TB, 6Bombers.
Batavia I continue attacking this base and my troops capture it on Jan 24th. Grab 2000+ POW and, better yet, over 100,000+ Fuel and 35,000+ Supply. Base is intact and supply centers are fully functional! BANZAI!
Soerabaja A lot of strikes are flowing out of this base and so I concentrate my airpower at Balilpapan and knock this place out of business! Over a 5 day period, I fly an average of 45 Zero and 125 Betty/Nells to shut this AF down. There is furious aerial combat! By the end of the week these are the losses: Japan 22 Zero and 23 Bombers for 54 Allied Fighters (a lot of AVG), 12 B-17, and 3 Recon planes. Tough fight but successful.
Burma
Things settle here after taking Rangoon. The Allies are in head-long retreat towards the Irrawaddy and Mandalay. I pursue at my leisure. They still have many more troops here then me.
Bases Taken: Pagan and Taung Gyi (Jan 22nd)
The Allies attempt to attack my columns on several days and cause some minor casualties. I go to LR CAP on the 26th and still them by shotting down 10 Hurricanes, 4 Lysander, and 3 Wirraway (for NO losses). Puts an end to that nonsense for a day or two.
China
Changsha I continue to wear this city down by air attack, bombardment, and periodic ground attack. I knock the Forts down to ZERO on the 25th. The city will soon fall.
Yenen I have troops moving into this area to strengthen my attack. I finally take the hex SE of the town on the 23rd. The northern hex falls on the 26th. Making slow but steady progress here.
There are daily air raids on each of these cities.
Totals for the WEEK:
Ships Sunk
Japanese 2DD, 2PG, 2MSW, 3AK, 3AP
Allied 1DD, 1PT, 4MSW, 2AK, 4AP, and 1AV
Aircraft Losses
Japanese 36 F, 34 B, 1 TB, and 2 DB Total: 73 aircraft
Allied 83 F, 7 FB, 9 B, 13 B-17, and 3 Recon Total: 115 aircraft
HEAVY aerial combat! I came out on the better end but do not want to sustain this sort of loss rate for very long…

John,
How is your pool of pilots after this week??
I wonder if you put a few subs off of Soerabaja towards Balilpapan, that you could rescue a few pilots (saw your post on a thread about Search & Rescue). If you can, post how many pilots you lose along with the planes. It would be interseting to follow.

More great stuff, John! You seem to continue piling success upon success. This says a lot about your planning. Your worthy opponents have not been able to cause you any significant delays or lossess yet. I think you are doing a great job of keeping them off balance. I'm really enjoying this war. How far along is the game, relative to your updates here?

NY59--I will be doing precisely that with a couple of KB attacks coming up. Will post if anything actually happens. How would I know if I actually rescue a downed pilot?
USSAmerican--I am running about two weeks behind at the moment. I just sent the Feb 5th turn to the guys.
You are correct about planning and organization! Canton Isle is about to experience something started SIX weeks ago. The loss of Hiryu and Fuso is said but I have to admit that SINKINGS haven't been too bad. I have a lot of damaged ships though.
My next goal is force a CV Battle! We'll see...
Operations Typhoon (capture of New Zealand) and Southern Wind (capture of NW Australia) are already in the planning stages with Army HQ. As soon as Java falls (Units for Typhoon) and Philippines goes (Units for Southern Wind), I plan to launch the assaults concurrently in mid-to-late April.

Hello Readers! I haven't been able to update the AAR at all. I have about an 1 1/2" pile of notes to translate into the AAR!
Since my last entry is late-January and we are now in mid-March, I have decided to do a series of two week reports that should get me caught up on the action. I have 4 hours today to do this, so I THINK it is possible! Once I have caught up, then I will revert to daily reports.

Combat Report--Jan 27-Feb 15, 1942
As just mentioned in my last posting, I am going to be writing a series of 3 two-week reports covering the operations of the Japanese Empire from February to mid-March. These reports will not be quite so detailed as I would like but I need to catch up and this is the only way to do that! I’ll report region-by-region.
Combat Report
January 27-February 15, 1942
North Pacific
Quiet area. I have Kiska and Attu and have been running reinforcements and, mainly, supply there. The bases are slowly building up. My plans here are to use them as a defensive line incase my opponents choose to attack from the north and, once big enough, use Kiska as an advanced SS Base to raid supply lines.
My opponents have kept a few SS in this area to damage and pick off the occasional AP/AK. They have been somewhat successful in doing that: 2AK/1AP has been damaged while traveling to and from.
Central Pacific
Midway I captured this base on the 15th.
Canton I will remind my readers that I dedicated an Infantry Division and large BF to prep and land here at the end of December. This convoy plods across the Pacific and FINALLY lands on the 10th and captures the island on the 11th. Grab about 1,000 POW from a BF. There are numerous follow-on BF and support units on their way to build-up this base for future operations.
Bases Captured Nanomea Atoll--Feb 7th, Nukufetau Ilse--Feb 11th, and Funafuti Ilse--Feb 12th
KB Use KB-1 (Akagi, Kaga) patrol throughout this region. They serve to keep reinforces from reaching Canton. I do note some shipping at Pago-Pago but must cover the Canton landings first.
Soryu rejoins her sisters, after repairing her battle damage from the Battle of Johnston Island, on the 14th.
SS Action There have been a number of Japanese SS operating throughout the Central Pacific. The Allies have stepped up their ASW operations and I have been forced to withdraw some of the subs: I have lost 1SS and had 2 severely damaged. These SS haven’t been deployed doing nothing, the Americans lose 2DD, have another damaged, lose 2AK, and have a TK damaged.
SE Pacific
Having captured Luganville and 2/3 of New Caledonia, I continue with the reduction of PM and Noumea. Supported by KB-2 (Shokaku, Zuikaku, Shoho), these operations move at a frustratingly SLOW pace!
Port Moresby I begin to regularly intercept C-47s flying in supplies to the base. The 48th Inf Div gets reinforcements on the 7th and again on the 11th. These reinforcements, coupled with regular daily bombings from Rabaul and Lae finally yield progress on the 13th with a 4-1 attack that reduces Forts to 0. Port Moresby falls on Valentines Day 1942--February 14th--The Japanese grab over 9,000 POWs!
This immediately opens up the 48th Inf Div for operations aiding in the quagmire of Noumea!
Efate Captured January 30th
Noumea The defense of a New Zealand Brigade, US Art Reg and large US BF holds all my attacks. I attack on 2nd, 4th, 8th, and 14th. These attacks keep the Forts at 0 but cannot dislodge the Allied Forces.
KB-2 ranges around the area and sinks/damages ships at Suva and south of Noumea.
Philippines
This area is a holding operation until my ground forces reach a point where I can safely attack. I constantly fear an Allied counterattack out of Clark or Manila. My forces, by number of units, LOOK impressive but they have little-to-no combat power.
Continuously raid Clark and Manila AFs. The Allies counter by moving Fighters and heavy bombers to these bases periodically and stage raids on my main fields of Aparri and Laoag.
Eastern DEI
Clean-up operations going on. Work to expand Lautem and Amboina in preparation for the assault on NE Australia and interdict convoys whenever possible. My SS score some successes off Broome and Darwin. I have a few warships based out of Amboina and they raid as well.
Bases Captured Waingapu--Jan 28th, Maumere--Feb 1st, Ruteng--Feb 5th, Raba--Feb 6th, Pinrang--Feb 8th
Western DEI
Operations continue to revolve around the final reduction of forces within Malaya and the capture of bases within Sumatra. Plans are to grab the Sumatra bases, jump to Andaman and then use whatever units are available to augment the Burma campaign.
Bases Captured Bankha, Sum--Feb 3rd, Padang, Sum--Feb 6th, and Benkolen--Feb 7th (Capture 3400 POW)
My opponents SS are VERY active! They hit numerous targets and I lose several AK/AP. There are 2 ASW TF working this area and they manage to damage a couple of SS but that is about it.
Java
There is heavy aerial combat throughout the two week. Most of my aerial losses take place here.
Bases Captured Bandoeng--Jan 28th, Tjitilijap--Feb 1st, Djokakarta--Feb 4th, Malang--Feb 7th, Madioen--Feb 8th, Kragen--Feb 10th
At the end of this two-period, I am FULLY confident of taking Soerabaja by middle of February. This is the only time where I will interject from the 2 week narrative and PLAINLY state my issues with the map. For some reason, my units moving from Tjilitijap to Soerbaja would only move 4 miles a day! The hexes were clear and nothing should have stopped their movement. There was nothing I could do to change things. Instead of a quick victory in Java, I have become bogged down. HIGHLY FRUSTRATING!
Burma
Heavy aerial combat rages here as well. I am bombing Mandalay and the Allies are countering with everything they have. Large fighter battles occur and bombers fall left and right.
I am content with having taken a bridgehead over the Irrawaddy in the hex west of Mandalay on Feb 5th. Once I have been reinforced, I will then begin a slow reduction of this target. Akyab will become an objective as well.
My SS have a very good two weeks here. They sink several TK and damage other shipping. I have a STF based here centered on BC Kongo. It bombards Andaman Ilse and Akyab.
China
Changsha Finally captured on January 31st.
Begin prepping all units in Changsha for future assault on Hengchow. Begin bombing assault on this future target.
Yenen Continue my seige of this city. I don’t have enough troops here to do much. Am waiting for reinforcements from the city I captured below it.
There is a decent amount of aerial combat over Yenen. I shot down a BUNCH of Chinese Fighters.
Totals for the Two-Weeks:
Ships Sunk
Japanese 17 Total--2DD, 2SS, 1PG, 3MSW, 3AK, and 7AP
Allied 22 Total--1DD, 4MSW, 9AK, 4AP, 2TK, 1AO, and 1SS
Aircraft Losses
Japanese 40 F, 61 B, and 1R Total: 102 aircraft
Allied 77 F, 33 B, 6 B-17, 4TB and 8Recon Total: 128 aircraft

Combat Report
February 15-28, 1942
North Pacific
Everything remains quiet up here. I send a small STF to check DH and am rewarded for it sinking a DD, MSW, and heavily damaging a couple of AK on Feb 16th.
Central Pacific
Canton Continue build-up here for future operations against Pago-Pago and vicinity. I am terribly hindered by a lack of fuel! Usually I plan things out pretty well but it will be at least two weeks before my fueling convoys reach Canton to keep operations rolling. This port draws Allied SS like honey. I damage 3-4 with ASW but take several ships damaged or sunk.
Not to stop, I begin improvising my operations…
Pago-Pago It looks as if a stand by the Allies will be made here. The Allies have at least 40 P-40s and several units sitting here. Begin raiding the area: on the 17th, I surprise a small convoy and sink 2 US DD and on the 18th I bag a TK and AK. My SS hit several ships here as well.
Tongatapu Spot the AF being used and decide to take the island. Send an Invasion Force from Canton to this location. They will land on 2nd or 3rd.
SE Pacific
The action for this arena centers around the capture of Noumea as well as my raiding of the area with surface and CTF.
Noumea There are attacks on this base on the 15th, 18th, 21st, and FINALLY I take Noumea on the 26th. With the surrender, I grab 7000+ POWs. Immediately begin to consolidate my froces there and plan for the attack upon Nandi and Suva.
Naval Action!
Feb 18thand 23rd--KB-2 gets into the fray SE of Suva. These CV sink CL Raleigh and an AK and then on the 23rd get another AK/TK.
Feb 21st--I get a mid-ocean intercept with a CA and 5DD that sink a PG and damage 4 other ships.
Feb 23rd--As I attack around Suva, the Allies counter with a STF Raid at Noumea with 3CA, 1CL, and 5DD. I have a small STF there (1CA, 1CL, 4DD) and lose a DD but manage to damage most of the Allied TF.
Feb 24th--My LBA takes over and hits CA Astoria with 2B/1TT, CL Hobart 1B-1TT, and a DD 2B. Unfortunately, KB-2 is TOO far away and the damaged warships manage to slip away to New Zealand.
Suva Several weeks ago I loaded several convoys in Japan for Nandi and Suva. These convoys are now approaching the area and will join up with the land forces in Noumea for a reduction of this island.
Strategy Note: I want Pago-Pago! It appears that there are decent number of troops, support units, and planes there. A cordon of Carriers will prevent reinforcement and withdrawal. Once Suva falls, I will combine my forces and land with the equivalent of 2 ½ Inf Div and numerous support units.
Attentions then shifts to New Zealand…
Cannot finish this report so I will post this and finish the rest when I get home from work.

I have seen this before in other places. I think it is not the map, it's the code. What I did to fix it was re-issue the movement orders. Fortunately, doing so did not zero out the miles travelled. I hope this works for you.
