Mediterranean Front
Situation Report April 15th 1944 Turn 42
Army Group C / Army Group F

The air war in Italy intensifies as the central region of the country is subjected to massive Allied air operations, the enemy continues its campaign of targeting front line units along with conducting aerial recon flights over the entire Lazio, Abruzzo and Umbria regions. Despite the huge numbers of enemy aircraft over the skies Axis air units were also out in greater numbers countering Allied operations.

Italian Front
Situation Report April 15th 1944 Turn 42
Army Group C

As the weather becomes better Allied attacks are now increasing causing some front line attrition rates becoming dangerously high, with very few units in reserve its making it hard for Commanders to rotate units out to rest and refit what units are available are needed to cover potential Allied landing sites. The front line is becoming precarious, in Rome Kurt Zeitzler is facing a dilemma on what to do as the line may not hold much longer, Allied attacks are becoming stronger every week and his Army's are getting weaker.
The Allies are continuing to concentrate there avenues of attack against the same areas of the front line in an effort to force a breakthrough, despite rotating troops from one sector to another the situation remains grim, fresh troops are needed so battle worn front line units can regain cohesion.
The AG Commander has two possible choices :

1.Fall back 10 miles to straighten the line and free up three Divisions but lose the natural defensive barriers of the Volturno / Biferno rivers as well as the adjacent mountain ranges.

2. Hold the current line and hope that reinforcements from OKW arrive in time.

late in the day Zeitzler sends an urgent message asking for more reinforcements as reports come in of heavy attacks across the front line.

The Allies launch two assaults on Coastal town of Grazzanise and flanking attacks towards Capua

With the withdrawal of several Allied divisions from the Italian theatre in the past few weeks concern has been mounting in Berlin with Supreme Command all to aware that an invasion of the European Continent is a certainty, where, when and what strength the enemy will be when it launches its forces against Germany's Atlantic Wall, this vital information is needed by OKW to counter the invasion.

To this end Abwehr's top sleeper agent for the last two years stationed in Britain had been activated, for the past several months our operative has been ordered to gather as much intelligence on the strategic buildup of Allied forces throughout Great Britain, our agent receiving specific orders in the last two weeks to locate the whereabouts of the two US Airborne divisions that left Italy.

The two paratrooper units will possibly spearhead any invasion of France, OKW must know where they are.

Hi all
Just thought I would do something slightly different than the normal weekly AAR posts while still in the general concept of a game report, this weeks posts will be more on the light side and less stats and maps but still hopefully interesting.
This AAR has been going for some time now, so long that its now been 2 years to the day when I first started it " time flies when your having fun " anyway thought I might mark the occasion.

regards

The fighting continues in the Ukraine / Stalingrad regions with Soviet forces launching repeated attacks and breaking through and opening up narrow supply lines to the trapped 15th and 24th Tank Corps, both enemy units are however unable to pull back to the safety of friendly lines and remain in danger as further enemy attacks fail to push back our forces, XXXXVI Pz Korps and VII ArmeeKorps counterattack resealing the pocket and forcing back the Soviet 8th Army and 18th Army.

The front line here on the Caspian Sea region is increasingly erratic and unstable as the Soviet Command once again strips there defences to again bolster the operations against AG South, this move virtually leaves the Kalmykia region free to capture, a lightning advance by 1st Pz Armee could see the Von Mackensen's Panzer's at the gates of Astrakhan within a week. Despite this great opportunity for The Ostheer Von Kleist has has orders not to launch any major operations yet.

Allied air fleets returned in force this hitting major German cities in the west of the country, damage was extensive in The Ruhr region with resource and fuel facilities the main targets, Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg also received heavy attention as enemy bombers struck at multiple rail infrastructure facilities with large scale raids repeatedly. Our fighter forces were out in large numbers but the sheer number of large scale raids enabled the enemy to cause major damage.

In France too Allied Bombers struck at the French capital and its surroundings, air bases, ground installations, troop concentrations and rail, there was also a concerted effort by the enemy to recon our ground defences and unit deployments in french territory, Axis air units were out in force here but again were overwhelmed by enemy numbers.

The Allies attack in force with almost all sectors of our front line being targeted, with most of 5th Pz Armee defending Capua and Grazzanise Von Arnim's troops come under heavy attack as the Allies launch several armoured assaults which almost breakthrough, counterattacks by SS Panzer troops keeping our line from being breached by the US 5th Army.
In the centre 14th Armee is also heavily engaged by the US II and US VI Corps supported by FF forces as they try to push LXXXXVII ArmeeKorps from its mountain top positions, the Allied attack fails and they call off any further assaults.

In the Biferno sector 10th Armee and 5th Pz Armee come under sustained attack with both Armee's facing several large scale Inf and tank assaults against our river defences however the line holds the Brit 8th Army failing to secure any river crossings.

German Intelligence also receives reports that General Mark Clarke is now no longer in Command of the US 5th Army replaced by General L Watson.

5th Pz Armee defending along Volturno line halt the Allied coastal drive to Rome.
