Summary of Operations 5/25/43
A generally slow day at the office...
Five large U.S. AK's were sent out of the game for conversion to repair ships (AR). I sense that one cannot have too many AR's in this game and they could well be useful 180 days from now (when these ships come back from conversion).
Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting light Jap air patrols near Canton Is and at Pago Pago - G3M Nell & G4M Betty flights spotted at both locations. Quiet in the Kwajalein area. Several Jap TF's spotted moving southward off the Japanese home islands during game turn replay, no U.S. sub intercepts.
South Pacific: Jap recon flights over Penhryn Is and Auckland. Otherwise quiet.
U.S. ground forces have now landed at all locations in the Society and Cook Islands (Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Papaete, Bora Bora), construction of base faciltities is well underway on all of these islands.
Australia: No Jap recon flights. Allied recon flights over Port Moresby, Darwin, and Exmouth all reporting no detected activity or change in Jap forces. Otherwise quiet.
DEI: Sigint report for 5/25 includes entry indicating 146 IJN Base Force now located at Sorong. 146 IJN Base Force is a new LCU in the Japanese OOB.
India/Burma: Jap recon flights over Imphal and Chittagong. No air or ground combat activity. Otherwise quiet.

Summary of Operations 5/26/43
Summary of Operations 5/26/43
North Pacific: Plans to transfer a number of U.S. subs to Adak Is and activate it as a submarine base now underway. Base facilities on Adak now built to maximum size (port 7, airfield 6) with substantial stocks of supply and fuel on hand. One AS auxiliary ship is already stationed at Adak with plans to transfer at least one more to Adak. HQ North Pacific is located on Adak and most air units and support LCU's previously in Anchorage have been moved forward to Adak.
Adak Is will support submarine ops in the northern Pacific including sea areas around the Japanese home islands. Several bases with size 3 or greater ports are available as emergency stops for heavily damaged subs returning from patrol areas near Japan - these include some of the outer Aleutian bases (Kiska, Attu, Amchitka) and also Midway.
Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting light Jap air patrols (mainly G3M Nell & G4M Betty) near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, and at Pago Pago.
Only one U.S. sub (SS Blackfish) remains on patrol off Japanese home islands - no reported contacts with Jap air patrols or surface TF's. SS Blackfish is due to retire from the patrol area shortly and return to base to refuel and refit (repair minor system damage).
Several groups of U.S. subs departed Pearl Harbor for patrol areas near Kwajalein (4 subs) and off the Japanese home islands (9 subs).
South Pacific: Jap recon flights over Auckland and Penhryn Is. Otherwise quiet.
Australia: Jap recon flights over Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. Pillager's recon over Alice Springs appears to focus on reporting Allied LCU's in Alice Springs (a small handful) and conveniently ignoring the numbers of USAAF air reinforcements transferring northward to Alice Springs from bases in SE Australia.
Allied recon flights over Port Moresby, Exmouth, and Darwin all report no detected Jap activity or change in forces.
DEI: AAR report entries (both Japanese and Allied) for 5/26 game turn shows contact (sub attack) between U.S. sub Snapper and an unidentified Japanese TF off Pontianek.
India/Burma: Jap recon flights over Chittagong and Imphal. Otherwise quiet.
Hudson I recon over Rangoon reporting 2 Jap TF's (+1 from last report), 392 aircraft (142 fighters, 69 bombers), 16 Jap LCU's, heavy industry 26(167), resource production 39(162).
Detected status of Jap base in Moulmein - 3 Jap LCU's, resource production 74(27).
China: China: Jap recon flights over Pakhoi, Kweilin, Chungking, Chengtu, Tuyun. Numerous light ground attack missions by both Chinese and Japanese air forces continue.
Japanese ground forces continue bombardment attacks. AAR's follow.

(Jap 23 Mixed Brigade moved north from Saigon to reinforce this attack)

China: Jap recon flights over Nanning, Kweilin, Chungking, Chengtu. Light ground attack missions by both Chinese and Japanese air forces continue.
Ongoing ground attack missions by Chinese air squadrons have resulted in a substantial increase of pilot experience in many of these squadrons - average pilot experience levels in the 60's and higher in some cases. I'm looking at possibly upgrading planes to P-40N's in at least one or two of the best Chinese squadrons subject to availability of P-40N planes in the replacement pool. Lt Zuolin's "Den of Thieves" squadron is upgrading its pilot experience level nicely flying attack ops over Jap bases in inland areas of northern China.

Summary of Operations 5/30/43
Summary of Operations 5/30/43
The start of a rather substantial catch-up in this thread. We haven't stopped playing (we're actually on the 6/6 game turn now), just not enough hours in the day for me to post anything. On with the headlines...
Central Pacific: U.S. subs report Japanese air patrol activity shifting southward - more G4M Betty flights spotted near Canton Is and at Pago Pago, less air activity near Kwajalein. No reported contacts between U.S. subs and Jap surface ASW or other ships.
Pillager is no doubt picking up on my increased activity in the South Pacific theater (or what I have of one), particularly recent U.S. activity he's detected at Penhryn Is. Without going into an extensive discussion of strategic plans, preparations are now underway (in the early stages) for attacking the Japanese outer perimeter at either of two points - the Canton Is area or Pago Pago.
At this time, it's possible either of these attack preparations could eventually take on the role of a decoy to divert Pillager's attention from the real objective. Also noteworthy is that Pillager has returned many of his ships to Kwajalein and at the same time diverted much of his naval search aircraft southward - possible opening for a future U.S. carrier sortie against Kwajalein, either as an independent operation or a prelude to assaulting the Japanese outer perimeter at a location to the south. There's possibly a way to use Pillager's own intelligence gathering as a weapon against him.
At this point in the game, I'm taking a serious look at offensive plans. Just not sure exactly what I'm gonna do yet. Hawaii, the Line Islands, and many island bases to the south already are or will soon resemble England just before D-Day. Moving HQ South Pacific and re-aligning the South Pacific area eastward from its historic boundaries has resulted in a very large concentration of forces along "interior lines".
Quiet off the Japanese home islands. The one remaining U.S. sub south of Japan will soon have to return to base for refuelling and refit. A group of nine U.S. subs are now enroute from Pearl Harbor to take up patrol stations in this area.
South Pacific: Jap recon flights over Auckland and Penhryn Is. Unidentified Jap submarine detected W of Penhryn. Otherwise quiet.
Australia: Jap recon flights over Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. USAAF air reinforcements continue their gradual transfer northward from bases in SE Australia.
Allied recon flights over Port Moresby, Darwin, and Exmouth all reporting no detected activity or change in Japanese forces.
India/Burma: Jap recon flights over Cox's Bazar (new target), Imphal, Chittagong. Otherwise quiet.
Hudson I recon over Rangoon reporting 3 Jap TF's, 312 aircraft (121 fighters, 49 bombers), 16 Jap LCU's, heavy industry 30(163), resource production 43(58).
China: Jap recon flights over Pakhoi, Kweilin, Chungking, Chengtu, Nanning. Light ground attack missions by both Chinese and Japanese air forces continue. Japanese bombers again strike airfield facilities in Tuyun, large numbers of Chinese continue filling in the potholes.
One Chinese P-43 squadron (21 CAF) upgraded to P-40N. Many Chinese fighter squadrons now have pilot experience ratings in the low to mid-60's and I'm considerating gradually upgrading planes in these squadrons to P-40N's. With limited (geographic) opportunities to get Allied planes into direct combat vs Japanese air forces or against ground targets, I am looking at getting the Chinese air force into the act. The pace of Chinese air upgrades will be subject to maintaining availabilty of replacement P-40N's in the pool to replace combat losses for U.S. air squadrons and upgrades to the many U.S. squadrons in rear areas still equipped with P-40E's (upgrades in these squadrons are being done as they move into forward bases).
Japanese ground forces attack at Kweilin, hex 44,35 (Changsha-Kweiyang rail line), and in Southern China inside the China-Vietnam border (hex 39,38). Jap ground forces crossing the China-Vietnam border appear to be advancing on Pakhoi. AAR's follow.

Turn around time for refits and repair of combat damage on Allied submarines operating in the Indian Ocean and DEI is quite slow due to the limited size of shipyard facilities in this region and distance of shipyards and bases from operational areas. This is a substantial restriction on Allied sub activities in the DEI and Indian Ocean.
U.S. sub Snapper on patrol in the Palembang area has started returning to base to replenish.
India/Burma: Jap recon flights over Cox's Bazar and Chittagong.
