Summary of Operations 6/23/43

Central Pacific: U.S. subs report little change in Jap air patrols near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, Pago Pago. Several contacts with Jap carrier planes (D4Y Judy & B6N2 Jill) reported near Kwajalein. No reported contacts between U.S. subs and Jap surface ships in any of the above locations.

Unidentified Jap sub detected W of Jarvis Is - appears to be another "picket line" sub Pillager is employing in the "no-mans' land" sea area between U.S. and Japanese controlled islands.

Plans are being considered to form one or more ASW TF(s) to operate from the most forward U.S. Central Pacific bases (Johnston and Jarvis Is likely candidates) with the intent to perform occasional hit-and-run ASW attacks on Jap picket subs. ASW TF would be kept beyond or at the outer limits of the range of known Japanese LBA.

U.S. subs operating near the Japanese home islands report light Jap air patrols in most areas - however, relatively large numbers of E13A1 Jake floatplanes reported flying over hex 63,39 (Sea of Japan N of Kyoto/Maizuru). Presence of E13A1 floatplanes in these numbers possibly indicates a large number of cruisers and BB's currently based somewhere in the Japanese home islands.

SS Peto engages several Jap TF's north of Luzon. AAR's follow.

Summary of Operations 6/24/43

Summary of Operations 6/24/43

Start of shipyard repair activity for the 6/43 ship upgrade had been deferred on the U.S. west coast until repairs for 4/43 ship upgrades were fully completed for U.S. surface warships. With most of the U.S. surface warship fleet (except for old BB's, Omaha class CL, and DD with low AA ratings) operating as escorts in carrier TF's, priority had been given through mid-June to complete 4/43 upgrades on these ships before starting any 6/43 upgrades.

With completion of 4/43 upgrades, activity is now starting on the 6/43 ship upgrade which is turning out to be rather large. Ship upgrades for 6/43 include a useful AA upgrade for U.S. Liberty class AK's - this class consists of a rather large number of ships and is a substantial part of AK transport inventory for the U.S. Other U.S. ships receiving improved AA in the 6/43 ship upgrade includes many AO's and also some classes for other auxiliary types. AA upgrades for Liberty AK's and other auxiliaries will now receive some priority as the more ships that can launch "lead" at Jap planes, the better. A need for this should be apparent once U.S. amphibious operations start.

Many ships eligible for the 6/43 upgrade are currently at sea (dispatched on various transport ops in late 5/43 to get them out of port before the 6/1/43 game turn). These ships are now being taken in for upgrade as they return to port - ships with minor system damage will be taken in first to receive 6/43 upgrade along with a refit, undamaged ships with 6/43 upgrades will remain in operational service and upgrade later as shipyard capacity is available. Most 6/43 upgrade activity is in U.S. and Canadian west coast shipyards with a few occurring at Pearl Harbor.

Central Pacific: Light Jap air patrol activity reported by U.S. subs near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, Pago Pago. No reported contacts at any of the above locations betweeen U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships.

Relatively quiet near the Japanese home islands - U.S. subs south of Japan reporting no Japanese air patrols or contacts with Jap surface ships.

A large number of E13A1 Jake flights reported by SS Tuna operating in the Sea of Japan north of Matsue. SS Tuna attacked and hit by a Jake - system damage 28, float 61.

Summary of Operations 6/27/43

Summary of Operations 6/27/43 Another relatively quiet day at the office.

North Pacific: PBY Catalina recon over Paramushiro Jima reveals 2 Jap LCU's, no detected activity. I've started this particular U.S. recon not so much to explore a possible invasion site (though I've had several LCU prepping for this location just in case) as creating something else to attract and divide Pillager's attention. Your basic "spread the defense".

Central Pacific: Little change in Jap air patrol activity near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, Pago Pago. Very light Jap air patrols detected off Japanese home islands.

SS Drum engages Japanese TF east of Iwo Jima. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 67,53

Japanese Ships
DD Shiratsuyu, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage (no confirmation of sinking)
DD Susuzuki
DD Akizuki
CA Maya

Allied Ships
SS Drum, hits 2, on fire (system damage 33, float damage 63)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

South Pacific: Jap recon flights continue at Auckland and Penhryn Is. Otherwise quiet.

Australia: USAAF P-40's and RAAF Hudsons fly ground attack against Jap 5th Yokosuka SNLF outside Coen. As long as there's no Jap fighters on CAP over this LCU, it's "free target practice". No planes lost, light Jap casualties on the ground.

Hudson I recon over Darwin reports one Jap TF, 419 aircraft (192 fighters, 33 bombers), airfield damage 27, 4 Jap LCU's. U.S. submarine Hoe remains on patrol at Darwin.

Sigint report entries for 6/27 indicating Pillager is transferring more Jap anti-aircraft LCU's into NW Australia - in addition to 53 Heavy AA Bn reported on 6/26. 49 and 56 Heavy AA Bns (along with 53 AA Bn) were all previously with the Kwantung Army. Sigint report entries follow.

49th Heavy AA Battalion is loaded on AP, Saipan Maru moving to Darwin.
56th Heavy AA Battalion is loaded on AP, Taiyo Maru moving to Darwin.

Allied recon flights over Exmouth and Port Moresby both report no detected Jap activity or change in Jap forces. A6M3a fighters reported on CAP over Port Moresby.

U.S. submarine Paddle at Rabaul reporting several contacts with one or more unidentified Jap TF's.

India/Burma: Jap recon flights over Akyab, Imphal, Cox's Bazar.

China: Jap recon flights over Tuyun, Kweilin, Tsuyang.

Light ground attack missions by both Chinese and Japanese air forces continue. The following AAR's are a sample of typical ground attack air activity over the front lines - activity in today's game turn is a little bit lighter than usual in terms of the number of air missions flown on both sides but still a good illustration. Most Chinese air strikes are "track and attack" missions mainly to pin down locations of front line Jap LCU's - these missions have also considerably upgraded experience levels of Chinese pilots. Practically no air-to-air combat.

As a matter of interest, what is the experience level of the Den of Thieves unit compared to the average of the KMT fighter units.

Alfred,

As of this game turn, 8 CAF "Den of Thieves" fighter squadron is on stand down to rest (reduce fatigue level back to 0). It's been flying airfield and ground strike missions almost daily against various targets in north central China. Current overall pilot experience level of the "Den of Thieves" is 71 with no pilots lost in action - slightly better than average for KMT fighter units overall. Its sister squadron (7 CAF) was recently transferred to Chungking for upgrade from P-66 to P-40N's.

Experience levels for KMT squadrons (both fighter and bomber) vary from the low 60's to near 80. A total of five KMT fighter squadrons have upgraded or now upgrading to P-40N's. I'm looking at P-40N upgrades for one or two more Chinese fighter units, possibly to be done ahead of upgrading lower-experienced USAAF squadrons.

What I'm really looking ahead to with the Chinese air force is the availability of B-25J Mitchells (this type not expected in production for the next few months). It is very likely the first squadrons upgrading to this type (from SB-2's and Il-4's) will be Chinese. Chinese bomber squadrons have done quite well - best pilot experience levels in the KMT air force is among these units.

Give these guys another year or so... there will be some very, very good Chinese air units.

Summary of Operations 7/5/43

North Pacific: PBY Catalina recon over Paramushiro Jima reports Ki-43-II fighters on CAP, 2 Jap LCU's.

Central Pacific: U.S. carrier force approaching Marshall Islands spotted by several H8K Emily naval search patrols, one Emily identifying CV Saratoga. The U.S. carrier force sorted on 7/1 to try taking advantage of a prolonged run of Heavy Precipitation weather conditions in this area (since the 7/2 game turn) and approach the Marshall Is chain undetected for a possible sneak attack against Jap bases. Operation Report entries follow.

H8K Emily sighting report: 2 Allied ships at 90,82 , Speed 10 , Moving West
H8K Emily sighting report: 4 Allied ships at 90,82 , Speed 13 , Moving West
H8K Emily has spotted Saratoga at 90,82
OS2U-3 Kingfisher sighting report: 2 Japanese ships at 85,81 , Speed 4 , Moving Northwest

A Kingfisher spotter plane detected an unidentified Jap TF (see situation map) moving on a NW heading.

An unidentified Jap sub was also detected earlier on 7/3 near the U.S. CV's route of advance (shown near east edge of situation map below). It could not be determined at that time whether the Jap sub had spotted the U.S. carriers (possible I-class sub with a floatplane?). The decision was made on 7/3 to detach one ASW TF in position to track this sub but not attack immediately in the event the sub had not detected the U.S. carrier TF's.

The U.S. carrier force consists of eight Air Combat TF's (7 U.S, one British) along with two attached ASW TF's. The attached ASW TF's were included in the "stack" to split off and attack Jap picket subs in the sea area between Johnston Is and the Marshalls that may be encountered along the route of advance.

Weather conditions for this sea area had been Heavy Precipitation for the 7/3 through 7/5 game turns. Precipitation is forecast in this area for 7/6.

Carrier TF's were issued orders for the 7/6 game turn to turn NW at full speed to close range and attack the unidentified Jap TF (or TF's). If the Jap TF or TF's turns out to be the KB, this movement will place U.S. carriers in best striking position whether the Jap TF(s) turn to a NE heading or move due E. A move by the KB to the SE will likely place it beyond air strike range of U.S. carrier TF's. The present tactical situation has eliminated any possibility of a successful strike on Kwajalein or other Jap bases in the Marshalls. However, if all or part of the KB is out there, ordered movements should place the U.S. carrier force in a relatively good attack position. As a "worst case" scenario... If the spotted Jap TF is not the KB, it's gonna get the crap pounded out of it.

Both attached ASW TF's were issued orders for 7/6 to break off from the main body and attack the closest known Jap subs.

Situation map follows.

U.S. submarines report light Jap air patrols activity near Kwajalein and at Pago Pago. Reported quiet in the Canton Is area and off Japanese home islands. No reported contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships in any of the above locations.

Sigint report entry for 7/5 indicates Jap 11 Tank Regiment now located on Iwo Jima. Previous location of 11 Tank Rgt was Mishan (Kwantung Army) as of 2/28/43. Following this reported movement of 11 Tank Regiment, there are no known Japanese tank LCU's remaining attached to the Kwantung Army.

Central Pacific: U.S. carrier forces continue retiring towards Johnston Is while covering movement of CA Houston. Current movement orders are set for all carrier TF's to recombine at a location W of Johnston Is. VF squadrons have been stood down on as many carriers as possible to return as many damaged F4F's as quickly as possible back to operational status. Four days of CAP operations for VF squadrons at 70% CAP level drained the ready status of VF squadrons on many CV's - this is an issue that will need to be looked at for planning and execution of future carrier ops.

Attached ASW TF's and the replenishment TF continue return movement to Johnston Is. Current status of CA Houston is system damage 57, float damage 47, fire 6 - still moving at 13 kts. Houston is likely to make Johnston Is in its present condition barring another Japanese attack on it.

U.S. subs reporting light Jap air patrols near Kwajalein (mainly G4M Betty & G5N Liz). A number of Jap surface TF's have appeared leaving Kwajalein and moving generally on a ENE heading. Several U.S. submarines in the path of the Jap TF's have attacked and sank several Jap ships. AAR's of these actions and an unrelated U.S. sub action near Majuro are below.
