I use a freeware ripper called cdex, which works just fine. It takes a little time to get used to the interface, but once you are, no problemas...

Ah, thanks, Terminus!![&o][&o][&o]
Just now downloaded this - and at least initially it looks good (and the price is right!!) i'll have to play with this tonight on my home computer (at work right now, and only CDs are some lectures without specific titles, although the label that cdex gives it is the same one that Windows Media Player gives it, which is more than i can say for the Magix MP3 Creator 10 Deluxe which cost a lot more than $0).
Thanks again!![&o][&o][&o]

RE: The Thread!!!!
Just FYI, Robert....I make CDs that play in my car stereo with Windows Media player all the time. Rip, create playlist, burn. Better quality than an MP3 because the latter is lossy compression. Only thing MP3s are good for are small, portable players where the size of the music file is an issue.
You can also do the above with RealPlayer, and probably with WinAmp too, all of which meet your price point. [:'(]
Also FYI, if you need a program that gets past copy protection in order to backup your CDs and DVDs, look at http://www.slysoft.com/. I've not used the DVD version, but the CD version is great.

Hmmm - much of the stuff i have is non-music (lectures, etc.), so the smaller the better. However, i would like to make a few music CDs of songs that i like (or at least don't dislike).
So, when Windows Media player rips a song, it goes to WMA format, and i assume when you burn it to CD, it doesn't take up signficantly more space than WMA (i.e. - Windows Media Player doesn't reconvert it into CD format by uncompressing it)? Or does it?
i guess my question is - how much stuff (time) can you get on CD (i.e. for music files) using this technique?
A big part of my problem at this point is PHYSICAL SPACE (and attendant loss of organization that occurs when i try shoving a large amount of cr@p into a small volume.) So, if i end up with 1 CD original stuff taking up 1 CD (of playable but archived space), Windows Media Player isn't much use...

This is a good way to go...I actually use MusicMatch Jukebox because it came with my laptop. Its a one step ripper that is really easy to use.ORIGINAL: dtravel
Wellllll, you could just use Windows Media Player to rip the CDs and then find a WMA -> MP3 converter. For that matter, why do they need to be MP3? Serious question, whatever it is that you want to do with them may not require they be MP3.
But a Google search on "MP3 converter" spews out lots of possibilities. Up there at the top is: http://www.wma-mp3.com/ I haven't tried it but it could be a place to start.

RE: The Thread!!!!
Anyone know how to embed a mpeg file on these posts. I just got one in my email that I have to share with the Thread - purely G rated I assure you. It reminds me of that picture posted a while back of the guy getting attacked on the helicopter buy a shark.

You could try the trick i used to post bmp files - change the extension to jpg, don't embed pic, and tell people to download it and change the extention back to mp3. Don't know if it would work, but you could try.

Trying to get more information on the best way to tackle this problem, i found this (with references):
"Microsoft claims that files in WMA format sound better than MP3 files at the same bitrate; however, a 2004 independent test[1] conducted at a common bit rate showed it (at 128kbps) as inferior to AAC and OGG Vorbis, roughly equivalent to LAME MP3, and superior to ATRAC3. Microsoft also claims that WMA files sound better than MP3 files at higher bitrates. Although claims about audio quality should be taken with caution, double blind tests have consistently failed to support Microsoft's claims about its superior quality."
Personally, i rather distrust Microsoft (and also its claims.)

My, my, at Waterloo Napoleon did surrender
Oh yeah, and I have met my destiny in quite a similar way
The history book on the shelf
Is always repeating itself
Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo
My, my, I tried to hold you back but you were stronger
Oh yeah, and now it seems my only hope is giving up the fight
And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose
Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo
So how could I ever refuse

But can they launch from a size 3 shoe or must it be size 4? And can they load torpedos from such small footwear? Because honestly they really should only be loading torpedos for special missions, anyway.....
