Personally I think you are too cautious, the delay you have allowed has benefited the Japanese more then you. Do not wait for an AGC, sp? it only takes a little over 3 months to prep to 100% which is beter then waiting.
In my opinion you have allowed him to reinforce and defend, vs taking the chance and pushing early at risk. Time is always on the allied side, definatly but you could have advanced very advantagously prior to now.
Do not go with a linear attack. If you have prepped for 3 locations in different theartres and advance at the same time, he cannot cover all and if you win 2 out of 3 then so much the better.
But your overall cautiousness plays more into his hand then yours.
In my opinion the Allies cannot lose due to overwhelming supriority in arms and quality, no matter what Japanes fan boys may think, but you can make it more enjoyable for the Japanese by engaging earlier and making a game of it.
Its the journey that matters, the conclusion is forgone, and for those that think otherwise, step back and realize only 1 maybe 2 AAR's have really been won by Japanese, and Hondas definatly a superior win.

Update on carrier aircraft updating... VT8 (CV Hornet) upgraded to TBM Avengers. With this upgrade five CV's (including Hornet) now operating TBM's. VT squadrons on three CV's (Wasp, Essex, Bunker Hill) and all six CVL's still equipped with TBF's.
North Pacific: PBY Catalina recon over Paramushiro reporting Ki-43-II fighters on CAP, one Jap TF, 3 Jap LCU's (+1 from last report),
Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting very light Jap air patrol activity near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, and most locations off Japanese home islands. H8K Emily & G3M Nell air patrols active at Pago Pago. SS Sunfish off Sasebo reporting heavy Jap air patrols (Ki-46 Helen, Ki-48 Lily, Ki-49 Helen & E13A1 Jake).

Other than the report (see below) for Yokosuka 5 SNLF, there is no evidence indicating the remaining 4 Jap LCU's in today's increase arrived in Darwin by sea. A U.S. sub (SS Puffer) has been on patrol in the Darwin base hex for several weeks and has reported no contacts with Jap surface TF's. While it is possible these LCU's may have arrived in Darwin from other bases in NW Australia, evidence does not indicate these LCU came from Daly Waters.
Sigint report entry for 7/30 indicates Yokosuka 5 SNLF is now at Darwin. Previous location of this SNLF was Palembang on 4/24/43.

Carrier aircraft upgrades continue. VF aboard CV Lexington upgraded to F6F - with this upgrade six of the eight U.S. CV's (including Lexington) and two CVL now operate F6F Hellcats. VF squadrons two CV (Wasp & Hornet) along with four CVL still equipped with F4F Wildcats.
Central Pacific: U.S. subs report continued Jap air patrols near Kwajalein and at Pago Pago, light Jap air patrols spotted in the Canton Is area. No air activity reported off Japanese home islands. No reported contacts between U.S. submarines and Japanese surface ships or ASW in any of the above locations.

Summary of Operations 8/3/43
I had been a little behind in posting - we were playing this game turn at the time stldiver and I had our discussion (top of this page).
I'm not surprised at having overestimated Japanese capabilities up to this point in our game. The question is... how much and exactly what was I overestimating? That I will find out in due course. Between fog-of-war and this being my first match in WitP vs a live opponent (also the first time playing CHS) - at least in my instance, playing this game reproduced a psychological factor that existed through the first months of the historical war, namely the "shock and awe" effect of the initial Japanese attacks, the idea on the Allied side that the Japanese couldn't be defeated with what was available at the time. Historically this factor largely disappeared with the battles of Midway and Guadalcanal (neither of which has occurred to date in Pillagers' and my PBEM). Once I read stldiver's post, my conclusion was "you have a point there".
So what to do now? Operation Gemini, dual attacks on the Japanese outer perimeter at Canton and Pago Pago. Factors behind the choice of these objectives.
1) These objectives are close enough where naval supporting forces (specifically carriers, shore bombardment, MSW) are in position to support amphibious ops at either or both locations.
2) I happen to have a substantial number of LCU's prepped to attack Canton and Pago Pago with others prepped for nearby islands at each location - probably prepped to the point of overkill.
3) A breach in the Japanese outer perimeter at either Canton or Pago Pago (or both) will create a situation where U.S. forces can drive a pincer from the south to outflank the Marshalls (specifically Kwajalein) or break into this island chain from the rear. Other U.S. LCU's have been prepping for a projected attack on Wake - this attack could be used as a northern pincer.
However, there's a number of things that need to be set in place.
1) Shipping. U.S. shipping in the eastern Pacific at this time is widely scattered. Many ships are in small convoys travelling westward from the U.S. with LCU, aircraft, supply and/or fuel cargoes (many of these cargoes would not be for use in Operation Gemini), other ships are in port either on the U.S. west coast or bases outside the operational area for Gemini, still others returning from forward bases to the U.S. for refit or to pick up more cargo.
a) Once convoys enroute from the U.S. arrive at their assigned destinations and unload cargo, orders will be issued for these ships to proceed to a central assembly point(s) for use in Operation Gemini instead of returning to the U.S. west coast for more cargo.
b) Other (empty) transport ships or convoys now returning to the U.S. west coast are being re-routed to the assembly point(s) depending on their current location, need for a shipyard refit or upgrade, suitablity of individual ship(s) for use in the operation. Orders to re-route complete convoys or individual ship(s) within a convoy are now being issued.
c) A number of transport ships (AK loaded with supply, TK with fuel) are already positioned as "floating warehouses" at several forward bases (mainly Pearl Harbor and Christmas Is). These ships will be allocated to Operation Gemini as detailed plans continue to develop.
d) As many upgraded 4800 capacity AK's as possible (I forget the class name) will be brought forward and made available for Operation Gemini as plans justify their use. These AK have (or will have) a 6/43 upgrade providing these ships with an AA capability - about 70% of these AK already completed the upgrade. Many of the already upgraded AK in this class are in the U.S. west coast bases - these ships will be loaded with cargo and dispatched to forward bases.

I had been a little behind in posting - we were playing this game turn at the time stldiver and I had our discussion (top of this page).
I'm not surprised at having overestimated Japanese capabilities up to this point in our game. The question is... how much and exactly what was I overestimating? That I will find out in due course. Between fog-of-war and this being my first match in WitP vs a live opponent (also the first time playing CHS) - at least in my instance, playing this game reproduced a psychological factor that existed through the first months of the historical war, namely the "shock and awe" effect of the initial Japanese attacks, the idea on the Allied side that the Japanese couldn't be defeated with what was available at the time. Historically this factor largely disappeared with the battles of Midway and Guadalcanal (neither of which has occurred to date in Pillagers' and my PBEM). Once I read stldiver's post, my conclusion was "you have a point there".
So what to do now? Operation Gemini, dual attacks on the Japanese outer perimeter at Canton and Pago Pago. Factors behind the choice of these objectives.
1) These objectives are close enough where naval supporting forces (specifically carriers, shore bombardment, MSW) are in position to support amphibious ops at either or both locations.
2) I happen to have a substantial number of LCU's prepped to attack Canton and Pago Pago with others prepped for nearby islands at each location - probably prepped to the point of overkill.
3) A breach in the Japanese outer perimeter at either Canton or Pago Pago (or both) will create a situation where U.S. forces can drive a pincer from the south to outflank the Marshalls (specifically Kwajalein) or break into this island chain from the rear. Other U.S. LCU's have been prepping for a projected attack on Wake - this attack could be used as a northern pincer.
However, there's a number of things that need to be set in place.
1) Shipping. U.S. shipping in the eastern Pacific at this time is widely scattered. Many ships are in small convoys travelling westward from the U.S. with LCU, aircraft, supply and/or fuel cargoes (many of these cargoes would not be for use in Operation Gemini), other ships are in port either on the U.S. west coast or bases outside the operational area for Gemini, still others returning from forward bases to the U.S. for refit or to pick up more cargo.
a) Once convoys enroute from the U.S. arrive at their assigned destinations and unload cargo, orders will be issued for these ships to proceed to a central assembly point(s) for use in Operation Gemini instead of returning to the U.S. west coast for more cargo.
b) Other (empty) transport ships or convoys now returning to the U.S. west coast are being re-routed to the assembly point(s) depending on their current location, need for a shipyard refit or upgrade, suitablity of individual ship(s) for use in the operation. Orders to re-route complete convoys or individual ship(s) within a convoy are now being issued.
c) A number of transport ships (AK loaded with supply, TK with fuel) are already positioned as "floating warehouses" at several forward bases (mainly Pearl Harbor and Christmas Is). These ships will be allocated to Operation Gemini as detailed plans continue to develop.
d) As many upgraded 4800 capacity AK's as possible (I forget the class name) will be brought forward and made available for Operation Gemini as plans justify their use. These AK have (or will have) a 6/43 upgrade providing these ships with an AA capability - about 70% of these AK already completed the upgrade. Many of the already upgraded AK in this class are in the U.S. west coast bases - these ships will be loaded with cargo and dispatched to forward bases.

Summary of Operations 8/4/43
The initial phase of orders for ship and LCU movements for Operation Gemini is now underway. Transport TF's enroute back to the U.S. west coast from forward bases have been combed for AK and AP that will be useful and orders were issued re-routing these ships to assembly bases. Other transport TF have been formed for picking up prepped LCU's and moving them to forward jumping-off bases - LCU's will temporarily disembark in these bases on arrival to recover elements disrupted in transit and complete any prepping. Transport and auxiliary ships still on the U.S. west coast are being gradually loaded with cargo and then depart for forward bases - as many ships as possible that are now refitting or upgrading in west coast shipyards will also be included.
Nearly all U.S. submarines, surface naval and carrier forces are already "in theatre" - they will remain in place for now (unless otherwise required) to complete as many needed ship refits and plane upgrades as time allows.
Air planning for Operation Gemini consists pretty much as follows. Both Pago Pago and Canton Is are outside the operational range of U.S. land-based air from any existing U.S. controlled bases - this situation also includes recon and 4E bombers. Given this fact, all air support for the invasion forces will have to come from carrier-based squadrons. Plans are to employ CVE air combat TF's for close-in air defense (CAP) over the invasion fleet, ground support air missions over Canton and Pago Pago itself, and as a secondary (close-in) naval air strike force against approaching Japanese surface ships or carriers - currently there are eight U.S. CVE in service with a ninth one shortly arriving as a reinforcement. The U.S. carrier main body (all CV and CVL) will be the primary stand-off force to engage Japanese surface ships, not to mention a likely action vs the KB.
Land-based air will remain in reserve during the initial stages until the base on Canton or Pago Pago is in U.S. hands. Base force LCU with air support elements will be landed as quickly as possible following the invasion assault LCU. Current plans are to transfer planes into Canton or Pago Pago by air instead of via sea transport (though the Long Island could be used to "drop" one in). The P-38G is anticipated to be the workhorse of land-based fighter cover Canton and Pago Pago once airbases can be established - as many P-38G equipped squadrons as possible will be made available for this task.
