RE: Burma Corps Stands Fast on the katha Line

Post by Andy Mac »

Halsey hit Palmyra today to start the softening up process.

I am in no real rush I have 3 or 4 days to hit Palmyra before my amphibs arrive and I want to pound it to the dirt

Various TF's are enroute and this will go on for a while

RE: Burma Corps Stands Fast on the katha Line

Post by Andy Mac »

Lots of action today my carriers retreated towards pearl leaving only a max range strike on Palmyra fortunaltey no Japanese aircraft launched....

Another atack came in on the Katha line - De facto the kowloon Bde is destroyed it hit their sector hard they are down to 25/75 strength and will need to retire back to garrison duty.

Basically each time he attacks one of my Bdes gets rendered combat inneffective.

23rd Div is almost on the line so when they are in place things will improve.

Not overly worried as yet no sign he is going to breakthrough and my reserve two Corps are at full strength in the rear.

Currently I need to rotate 32nd US Div, Kowloon Bde, 84th Indian Bde all to the rear to rebuild.

Slightly worried to see a full Inf Regt and an SNLF on Palmyra - thats a tought fight for 3rd Marines.

RE: Burma Corps Stands Fast on the katha Line

Post by Andy Mac »

I have to say thats a lot of strenght he is pouring into a fight that even if I lose I am not to bothered about.

XXXIII and XV Corps are in the rear and if I had realised how much he was going to commit in north Burma I would have retained enough amphib assets to land behind him....

Ah well cest la vie !!!!

About 11 - 12 Divs plus support going in against at most 5 of mine !!!

Thank gawd some of my units are well dug in take 4 Divs out of that for a reaction force in Centpac or SWPAC and I would make no progress there at all until late 43.

Bur Corps is doing its job and keeping a mass of IJA units tied to the Burma front

IJA armour is a lot less usefull after the first 6 months of war all my Bdes and Divs have integral A/T weapons and the 150th Royal Armoured Corps Regt with its 52 General Lees and 3rd Cabiniers with 52 Stuarts have more combat power than all the IJA tanks combined especially on defence

In order to break through PZB needed to hit me with massive air strikes from deep to avoid IJAAF supply getting in the way of his attacking force

Hit me in multiple successive days even if its 1:2 probably saving a couple of Divisions i.e attack with 5 Divs on day one a different 5 Divs on day 2 and then the whole damned lot on day 3.

Even if he takes 20,000 casualties chances are I take 10,000 don't have enough supply and am bounced back to Katha.

Attacking every 3 - 4 days with his whole force allows me time to recover, gives my troops time to rotate and allows my supply and disruption to lower....

In AE in bad terrain odds are meaningless its casualties over multiple days that wins battles.

PZB needs to attack and keep attacking to break through then overturn the casualty balance by kicking the crap out of my retreating units.

Going for the one big nasty attack doesnt always work any more in AE

And yet again PZB doesnt follow up with another attack

20th Indian Div is about 15 miles away so 4 days at current marching speed.

He will probably wait another day if previous patterns hold true if thats the case Burma Corps needs to only hold out against one more attack.

In other news troops and amphibs are closing on Palmyra in the face of an astonishing number of Japanese subs.

I have 4 ASW TF's with the fleet plus 20% ASW for all SBD's in the fleet I need to keep those subs down.

Each of my Carrier TF's has at least 8 good DD's along for the ride

RE: Burma Corps Stands Fast on the katha Line

Post by Andy Mac »

PZB has overstacked palmyra its sitting at about 9,000 men - thats a 50% overstack that will hurt him when I attack as his disruption and fatigue will not recover quickly.

Its quite tempting to just keep pounding from the air for a few more days and let his disruption sky rocket

Might sound like an obvious thing to say but make sure you have enough sorties left on your CV's and your groups ready for any naval battle! IIRC KB was last spotted in SoPac and could easily get to Palymra in a matter of days.

:)

I have no intention on landing until I defeat KB.

If i was serious I would be landing this turn but instead I have pulled off the the North 30% ASW to try and kill some subs

I have stopped bombing Palmyra and the plan is try and wait for him.

If KB is out there I suspect he will wait for me to land before he hits me.

Palmyra is already up to 10,000 men so waaay overstacked which means he needs supplies and fast.

So I will pull off head a couple of days north replenish at Johnson Island and come back in a few days.

Just because you CAN rapidly reinforce an atoll doesnt mean you always should. [:D][:D]

I want to defeat KB before I land otherwise I am caught between two stools.

I have about 40 subs covering the approaches to Baker Island and plenty of time I am in no rush.

If I dont feel a decisive edge I will simply wait 30 days then come back with 3 more fleet CV's in my ORBAT.

In all seriousness I aint in a rush so to some extent I would like to draw him intio a battle far from home surrounded by my subs I am therefore feeling pretty good about stuff at present

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it is discovered that Palmyra isn't the only atoll so overstacked. Accordingly, it might well be a very profitable exercise to create a roving circus of Allied assets to visit the enemy owned advanced atolls and sink the enemy resupply convoys. That ought to eventually bring the KB out, or allow Allied landings at severely starving enemy atolls.

its also a long way south for KB to be dragging fuel....

I am in no rush inside of 10 days I will have enough LST's to full set up 3rd marines.

So I may even come back again once more just to waste his time and fuel I have Pearl right close so my logistics are a doddle !!!

I need to go sleep for now but I am actually pretty happy with this

I dont have the turn as yet but it looks like my monsta wolfpack is starting to hit back I especially liked the AO taking some fish when my subs start to work he is going to suffer !!!

In the meantime I am retiring on Pearl to rearm my sorties (was down to 50%) all my Sqns are at full strength (VR Sqns on Johnson Island refilling my Sqns) so I will re arm, unload 3rd marines and reload them on LST's and then re sortie out there.

I dont really wantt o get caught between defending a beachhead/providing CAS and a major fleet action - I just dont have enough flight decks to do both yet - ideally I want a decisive carrier battle now and then use my carriers to support the landings

Anyway to get at me PZB will need to cross 2 - 3 subs at least which means I will get decent warning of where KB is unless he swings far south of the line islands or north of Johnson Island anywhere in between my monster wolfpack will pick him up.

Doing a little what if analysis that AO was sunk in the southern Marshall Islands.

KB will not be behind it so I know KB is further forward than the Marshalls so as a starter for 10 thats good.

He won't be to close to Johnson Island so that means probably somewhere close to Baker/Canton Island the only question is has he passed it yet or is he still approaching it.

I am willing to bet he is somewhere within 10 hexes of baker at present probably North either NE or NW given how far back that AO is tentativelly I would say NE of Baker i.e. not yet past the island - its a guess based on how far back that AO is but its not unreasonbable

I really want hit to run across some working sub torpedos !!!

I can't wait to get working torpdoes!

At present I'm running at about 45-50 attacks per month in October 1942. Roll on 1943.

Seems like the dud reduction is already having positive effects for you!

Well, the 60% dud rate in 1943 is better than 90% but still very frustrating. If you opponent knows what he is doing your subs won't have much effect vs merchant shipping. I am now using them more to support fleet operations as they are just a likely to nail a BB or carrier as a well escorted tanker, and Japanese DDs are not very well equipped with DCs at this stage.

As I said in my major whine posted earler in the forum, the main issue with subs is not the duds but targeting-where Allied subs more often that not target the escort over the valuable tankers and merchants. However, this does not seem to be the case when attacking warship TF. The subs seem to like going after the big ships.

I know this is the case with Japanese subs who have manged to put a lot of holes in my big ships over the course of a year.

More exciting for 1943 is not so much the Allied torpedoes but the monster boost in ASW assets. Bigger and better DC, mousetraps, hedgehogs, and even the lowly SCs and AMs get a lot of punch. The happy days for the Japanese sub fleet are well over....

:) Colorado took a torp today she will be fine apart from that cat an mouse continues.

I think PZB has lost my carriers they are hovering about 200 miles south of Johnson Island waiting to bushwack KB when it passes...

I have it LRCAPPED by my first Land based Corsair Sqn on the Island as well as 3 other marine F4F Sqns plus I have PBT's operating in LR Search mode and a heavy sub screen all around.

I should see him before he sees me....

Anyway my amphibs are running a battle v the sub wolfpack but 6 dedicated ASW TF's are en route to cover the last approach to Pearl and 200+ dedicated ASW Kingfisher's are waiting even if I dont get KB I hope to really thin the sub ranks if he follows into my ASW envelope around Pearl.
